2010 Sports Hall of fame Butch Ard (1979-1981) Track and Field, Football
J. W. Barnes (1962-1964) Basketball
Renee Spencer Chastain (1985 – 1987) Basketball, Softball
Rick Clarke (1973-1974) Baseball (1982-2005) Assistant and Head Baseball coach
Tom Shepherd (1961) Faculty (1970-2005) Soccer Coach (1980-2002)
The 2010 Hinds Community College Sports Hall of Fame honors these former Eagle athletes and coaches with an induction dinner Sept. 23, 5:30 p.m., in the Mayo Field House Gymnasium. For details, please contact the Institutional Advancement office at 601.857.3363. The Induction will be preceded at 5 p.m. with the naming ceremony for the Troy Arlis Ricks Wellness Center. Butch Ard played Eagle football, but concentrated his athletic efforts on leading the Eagle track to state and regional track and field championships. In that sport he was an All-American in his sophomore year. Since the fall of 2001, Ard has coached track and cross country at Mississippi College where he led the Choctaw men’s and women’s teams to four American Southwest Conference (ASC) championships. He has had 29 men and 25 women named to First and Second Team AllConference in cross country, and he was named ASC Coach of the Year two times for the men’s team and three times for the women’s. In 2008, he was Men’s Track Coach of the Year for the conference. J.W. Barnes was an outstanding point guard for the Eagles, as he averaged 18.2 points per game. He was named Honorable Mention All-State as a freshman and All-State as a sophomore. Soon after graduating from Mississippi College with honors in 1966, Barnes began serving as head basketball coach for the Clinton schools. After receiving his master’s degree at MC in 1974, he continued to serve the Clinton schools as guidance counselor and driver’s education instructor until his retirement in 2003. Just prior to retiring in 2004, he logged a four-year stint as assistant girls’ basketball coach. Renee Spencer Chastain enrolled At Hinds with a basketball scholarship and lettered two years in basketball and softball, and was a starter for both sports. She was a 1986 Mississippi Junior College All-Regional Selection, and in 1987, she received NJCAA Academic All-American Softball recognition and the college’s Lady Eagle Award. Her identical twin sister, Kay Spencer Walters, also played Eagle sports. Since college, she has coached and taught locally, starting with a year at Brinkley Middle School as physical education and health teacher and head girls basketball coach and a stint as assistant golf professional at Deerfield Country Club in Madison. She taught academics and served as golf coach briefly at Madison Ridgeland Academy before going to Whitten Middle School, where she coached girls’ basketball and taught physical education and health for two years. Rick Clarke of Clinton played Eagle baseball during the 1973 and 1974 seasons. He earned his bachelor’s (1977) and master’s (1984) degrees at Mississippi College. Clarke became a Hinds assistant coach for the 1983 season, and in July 1984, he became head baseball coach. After 22 seasons, he left Hinds in 2005 with 565 wins, four MACJC (Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges) South Division championships and two MACJC state championships. His teams appeared in 14 consecutive Region XXIII tournaments winning four (including Eagle baseball’s first regional win), and finishing five times as runner-up. Tom Shepherd founded the Hinds soccer program as a club in 1980 while serving the Raymond Campus as a business administration instructor. His development of the program into a regionally competitive varsity program led to the dedication in 2002 of the Tom Shepherd Soccer Field on the Raymond Campus. With varsity status and more peer competition, Shepherd’s teams began winning Region XXIII titles that included six NJCAA Region XXIII championships and five runner-up spots. Shepherd was named NJCAA Region XXIII Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1999. With the team’s 1999 MACJC championship, he was named MACJC Coach of the Year. He retired as soccer coach in 2000.

2010 HINDS FOOTBALL EAGLE BAND
Vashti underwood Muse Band Hall The Hinds Community College Hi-Steppers and Eagle Marching Band comprise one of the largest community college performing groups in Mississippi. In quality and complexity, their halftime performances rank among the best to be seen anywhere. The Hinds Eagle Band is the largest student activity on the Raymond Campus and has built an enviable reputation as a powerhouse among college bands. Rick Trusty (Hinds 1976), Alumni Service Award Recipient for 2010, is a major sponsor for the Hinds Community College Foundation and college events and is a member of the foundation board. As president of The Trusty Company Inc. one of his most recent Hinds sponsorships was as title sponsor of this year’s Wes Cliburn Memorial Scholarship baseball tournament. He has been involved with the foundation’s biggest fund-raiser, the Golf Fun Fest, since it began in 1987. As a member of the Athletic Alumni Chapter, he has supported the Alumni Association’s annual Ultimate Game Dinner, for most of its 11 years. “Rick Trusty is a person who is always looking for ways he can help us,” said Dr. Clyde Muse, Hinds president. “No matter what the effort was in – whether getting funds for our baseball program or getting funds for the Ultimate Game Dinner – he has always provided outstanding service to the college. He is certainly more
than deserving of this award.” Trusty graduated in 1974 from John Curtis Christian School in New Orleans where he earned 12 varsity letters in a variety of sports. When he came to Hinds with a football scholarship, he majored in business and was starter at quarterback for both seasons. He also played Eagle baseball for two years and earned All State honors. He still holds the highest single season batting average – .463 in 1975 – in Hinds’ baseball history. He worked his way up in the insurance industry beginning in 1980. In 1992, he joined The Trusty Company Inc., which was founded in 1975 by his father, Glenn Trusty. Starting there as a vice president specializing in employee benefits for small and large employers, Rick Trusty later became president of the company. In recent years the company has expanded to add more product lines, including consulting services.
Alumnus of the Year Con Maloney

A long-time member of the Hinds Community College Foundation board, Maloney was an early supporter of the college’s million dollar capital campaign and he regularly supports major fund-raisers, the Golf Fun Fest and Ultimate Game Dinner. He led the movement to renovate the Raymond Campus football stadium and name it in honor of his former Eagles coach, the late Joe Renfroe and he recently helped with major renovations to Joe Moss Baseball Field. In 2005, he made a donation to the drama department. “I was touched beyond words by his generosity,” said Alison Stafford, director of Theater on the Raymond Campus.

On Aug. 31, his nomination was announced for induction into the 2011 class of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. “Con Maloney has been one of the true leaders in state government and politics for a long time,” said Hinds president Dr. Clyde Muse. “He is a person that not only does things for his alma mater, Hinds, but he is generous to so many other different causes and never expects anything in return. I am so pleased that our college is honoring him as Alumnus of the Year.” The Maloneys have three grown sons, Chris, Mark and Steve, and seven grandchildren, Cole, Michael, Margaret, Jake, Ann Bradley, Callie and Mitchell.
