2011 HINDS BASEBALL OUTLOOK OVERVIEW After claiming the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state championship and hosting the Region XXIII tournament (where the Eagles finished one game short of the World Series) in 2010, many of the key players who helped Hinds reach this point return for the 2011 season. “We have a strong nucleus of sophomores coming back,” said sixth-year Hinds head coach Sam Temple. “We lost a lot of talent from last year’s team, but at the same time, we were able to pick up a number of transfers, who, along with the freshman in our recruiting class, will be immediate contributors.
Chase Wroten
“We are very athletic in both the infield and the outfield, and we have the most quality depth on the mound that we’ve had in our time here.” Temple, who has guided the Eagles to three consecutive postseason appearances, is joined on his coaching staff by Dan Rives (sixth season), Stephen Tharp and Clint Wilkerson (both in their first seasons). The 2011 schedule features 46 regular-season games, including 28 games at Joe G. Moss Field in Raymond. The Eagles will open South division play on Wednesday, March 16, versus Southwest Community College at home. Catchers Hinds has four catchers on the 2011 roster, and three of the four could see ample playing time in their first seasons on the job. The fourth catcher, Joseph Veazey (Brandon), will miss the 2011 season due to shoulder surgery.
4
Stephen Evans (Vicksburg), Stephen Joe (Ridgeland) and Sean Weaver (Vicksburg) will all fight for the starting position in the season’s early going. Evans and Joe are true freshmen, while Weaver is a redshirt freshman who spent the 2010 season with the Eagles. Infielders Taylor Bates (Pearl) is the lone returnee on the Hinds infield, and the third-year sophomore is coming off a nice season in which he hit .322 with one double, one home run and 16 RBI, while only committing four errors in the field as a freshman. Bates could see time at third base and second base as a sophomore. Ryno Martin-nez (Vicksburg) and Bates will compete for the starting job at third base, while Jimmie Elliott (Vicksburg), Daniel Gilbert (Ridgeland) and Pierson Waring (Vicksburg) will all battle for the second base starting job. Martin-nez, Elliott and Waring are all true freshmen, while Gilbert is a second-year transfer from Delta State

2011 Eagles Grant (Terry), who hit .305 with seven doubles, two triples, three home runs and 23 RBI as a freshman in 2010. The speedster was also four-for-four in stolen bases and may see playing time in both center field and left field. The other two veteran outfielders will compete for the starting center field and right field spots. Sophomore Trey Prentiss (Vicksburg) is slated to be the starter in left field or center field, and may interchange with Grant in the early going. Adam Thigpen (Clinton) will fight for the starting spot in right field along with newcomer Tyler Akins (Madison). As one of these two is playing right field, the other will be in the DH spot in the lineup. Prentiss hit .265 in 55 at-bats with four doubles and 10 RBI, and was a perfect five-for-five in stolen bases. Thigpen hit .261 as a freshman, finishing with two doubles, one triple and 14 RBI, as well as being a perfect three-for-three in stolen bases. Freshmen Andrew Gunn (Clinton) could also see time in the outfield in his first season, along with seeing time on the mound. Baucum could also play in one of the corner outfield spots, along with playing first base and pitching. Darrick White (Vicksburg) gives the Eagles another solid freshman option in the outfield.

Pitchers The pitching staff has many roles up for grabs in 2011, but luckily for the Eagles, there are a number of quality options .
University who redshirted in 2010. Gilbert will also fight for time at shortstop. Travious Relaford (Union City, Ga.) is the starter at shortstop. The freshman was named to the 2011 Baseball America Preseason All-American team as the lone shortstop for the entire nation of junior college baseball. First base is a position that may have a number of athletes see playing time. Caleb Baucum (Byram), Ethan Bright (Batesville), Alex Gunn (Clinton) and Jacob Thomas (Vicksburg) are all vying for the coveted starting spot. Outfielders Hinds returns three players with experience in the outfield, led by sophomore team captain Morris

Kurt Cooksey Co-Captain
2011 Eagles Mat t Anthony (Brandon), Michael Porter (Brandon) and Chase Wroten (Terry) are the three returning sophomores who logged innings as a freshman. Anthony made two appearances as a freshman in 2010, while Porter finished with a 3-4 record and 3.85 ERA in 432/3 innings pitched. The sophomore righty threw three complete games for the 2010 state champions and had 37 strikeouts to only 19 walks. Wroten, who transferred to Hinds after signing with the University of Southern Mississippi out of high school, finished 1-0 with a 4.65 ERA as a freshman for the Eagles in 2010. The right-hander recorded 16 strikeouts in 171/3 innings pitched. Akins, Cullen Babin (Houma, La.), Porter and Wroten are possible starters on the mound, along with Alex Gunn (Clinton), Nathan Harrell (Clinton) and Zach LaSuzzo (Monroe, La.).
6
Akins, Babin, Porter and Wroten are all right-handed pitchers, while Gunn, Harrell and LaSuzzo throw from the left side. Anthony, Kurt Cooksey (Vicksburg), Andrew Gunn, Jay Harper (Vicksburg), Carey Taylor (Brandon) and Thomas will all vie for the valuable middle innings on the mound. Cooksey is a co-captain who spent the 2010 season as a redshirt for the Eagles, while Harper and Taylor are true freshmen who are right-handers. Thomas is a left-handed true freshman. Bright and Taylor Wheaton (Foley, Ala.) could both see time in the all-too important closer’s role at the end of the ballgame. Both are right-handers who possess above-average fastballs and quality secondary pitches. Bright will also play first base at times, while Wheaton could also start for Hinds.

HEAD COACH SAM TEMPLE Sam Temple is in his sixth
to the state playoffs.
season as head coach of the Hinds Community College baseball program. The Vicksburg native claimed his first Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state championship in 2010. Hinds ended the season with a 32-21 record and finished as the runner-up in the Region XXIII tournament, which was hosted by Hinds. Temple was named 2010 MACJC Coach of the Year for his efforts in the dugout. Hinds had 14 players off the 2010 roster sign four-year scholarships, including eight at the Division I level. The Eagles also had a highly-successful 2009 campaign, one in which Hinds finished with a 35-19 record. Hinds hosted the MACJC state tournament and competed in the Region XXIII tournament. The second and third seasons were a remarkable improvement from the first, when the Eagles finished with a 13-28 record. In 2007 and 2008, Hinds finished with a 27-15 record and 29-20 record, respectively, making the state playoffs in the progress. Temple is an alumnus of Porter’s Chapel Academy in Vicksburg, where he was a two-year letterman, all conference honoree and a Mississippi Private School Association All-Star as a catcher. After completing his associate of arts degree at Hinds, Temple then went on to Delta State University and served two seasons as backup catcher for the Statesmen. After earning his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education, Temple served DSU as a graduate assistant for two years while completing his master’s degree. He began his career in coaching as head baseball coach at Warren Central High School in Vicksburg from 1996 to 2001. By his second season there, Temple had the Vikings on the upswing to a district title and took them

The following season, it was the district title, state playoffs, school record for wins, and that summer, American Legion State Champions. In 2000, the Vikings earned a district title, state playoff trip, USA Today’s Top 20 in the nation, and, that summer, won the Amateur Athletic Union state championship. In Temple’s final season at Warren Central, 2001, the Vikings ended with a 36-3 record, 5A state championship, USA Today’s Top 20 in the Nation (No. 4 in the nation and No. 2 in the south), Baseball America’s High School Top 20 and a new school record for wins. Temple next served Clinton High School’s baseball program as head coach for one year, ending the 2002 season with a 25-8 record, a co-district championship and a berth in the state playoffs. Temple then moved on to nearby Mississippi College, where he became assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator in July 2002. In his three seasons at the Clinton school, the Choctaws finished 90-43 overall, winning the American Southwest Conference championship in 2003. Temple received three Coach of the Year awards in 2001, was named the coach of the North team in the Mississippi All-Star game in 2001, and received the Doug Shanks Leadership Award in 2003. Temple has contributed to the game of baseball in a number of ways during his career. He has served as head coach of the semipro Mississippi Stars baseball team, been an instructor and camp director for Jim Page’s Champions Baseball Camps, and from 1998-2000 served as commissioner of American Legion Baseball in Mississippi, coordinating games in central Mississippi. He resides in Clinton with his wife Kristen and their three children, sons Garren and Gage, and daughter Grayson.

Rives plays a large role in the Eagles recruiting efforts, helping bring in five talented classes during his time in Raymond. Rives also serves as the sports information director at Hinds, where he has overseen the transformation of the new athletic website and production of all athletic publications and news releases. Rives completed his Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology from Mississippi College in 2005, where he earned All-Southwest Conference honors as a senior. He was voted Team MVP by his teammates and coaches, and also obtained AllAcademic honors in his junior and senior seasons. Rives received his Master of Arts Degree in Social Science from MC in 2007. He and his wife Andrea reside in Raymond with their daughter Madelyn.
Stephen Tharp is in his first season as the pitching coach for the Hinds Community College baseball program in 2011. Tharp, a Benton, Ark., native, spent the 2010 season as a volunteer assistant coach at Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux, La. While at Nicholls State, Tharp assisted with the Colonels pitching staff, coordination of camps and maintenance of the baseball facilities. Prior to his time at Nicholls State, Tharp worked at Arkansas State University, where he was the volunteer assistant coach and worked with the Red Wolves pitching staff. He also spent time at the University of Arkansas as a graduate assistant coach and one season at Pratt Community College (Kan.) as the pitching coach. Tharp, a left-handed pitcher in college, played at Pratt Community College for two years before finishing his career at Arkansas State.
Clint Wilkerson is in his first season as the Eagles volunteer assistant coach. Wilkerson comes to Hinds with a decorated resume, having claimed two consecutive 1A state championships in 2009 and 2010 as the head baseball coach of St. Aloysius in Vicksburg. He compiled a 145-50 record during his time, and was named Vicksburg Post Coach of the Year in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010. Wilkerson was named Region 6 National Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Diamond Sports for the 2010 season. He also served as a coach in the Crossroads Diamond Club All-Star game and as the District 6 head coach in the State Games of Mississippi. The Eagles would go 15-9 in conference play and finish in second place behind Jones County. Hinds defeated Northeast Community College in a best two-of-three series in round one of the
