Head Coach Mike Grzanich Mike Grzanich is currently in his third year as the head coach of the Hinds softball program. Grzanich previously served as the pitching coach for the Eagles baseball team for three seasons. The 2007 Eagles staff finished among the nation’s best, posting a team earned run average under three. In 2007, Grzanich helped tutor Brandon Martin and David Mooney, both All-State honorees as freshmen. The final members of the Eagles pitching staff to be named All-State in 2007 were Jack Craven and Matt Jordan, giving Hinds four All-State pitchers. Grzanich was born and raised in Illinois, playing one year of junior college ball at Parkland College (Ill.) before being drafted by the Houston Astros in the 19th round of the 1992 MLB draft. He played for the Astros minor league teams over the next seven years before being called up to the major leagues during the 1998 season. In 1999 Grzanich was picked up off waivers by the Detroit Tigers and ran into arm problems. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in 1999, Grzanich tried to make a comeback in 2001 with the Yuma Bullfrogs of the Independent League. However, he ran into more arm problems that forced him to retire. Grzanich returned to school after his playing career came to an end, receiving his Associate of Arts degree at Hinds Community College. He then moved on to Mississippi College, completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in Fitness Management. Grzanich is working on a master’s degree from Jackson State University. Grzanich lives in Raymond. He has two daughters, Ryleigh and Amory.

HindsCC softball co-captains also master academics Hinds Community College softball players Mackenzie Pettit and Courtney Carson have used their two years in Raymond to narrow down their multiple career interests into definite career paths. When they walk in the spring graduation ceremony in May they know where their next steps will take them. Both Pettit and Carson carry near 4.0 grade point averages and are members of the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa. They also serve as team captains for the 2011 Lady Eagles.

Carson and Pettit

Pettit, of Byram, a 20-year-old sophomore catcher, was a standout on the diamond for Terry High School. Architecture is what most interested Pettit in high school, but she was surprised to see how much she enjoyed physical science classes at Hinds. Now, two years later, Pettit will apply for the Physical Therapy Assistant program at the Jackson Campus-Nursing/ Allied Health Center this summer. “I liked A&P (Anatomy and Physiology) last semester and this spring I’ve found that what really interests me is physical therapy,” Pettit said. “I used last summer to get all my (literature) classes and math classes behind me. That has really helped me stay on the right path.” Carson, of Livingston, La., is a 19-year-old sophomore pitcher and first baseman from softball powerhouse Denham Springs High School near Baton Rouge. Carson began with an interest in biology and kinesiology, but soon shifted to a sports management track taking all the business classes available at Hinds. “I loaded up on business classes last fall and this semester so I can start with the classes in my major when I go to a fouryear school,” she said. Softball is still a possibility when Carson chooses a school this summer. Once her Hinds career is over she will begin to evaluate schools for softball and for their sports management degree program. “I want to play softball next year and I hope to stay in Mississippi. I plan to go to school for sports management regardless if I play softball or not,” Carson said. 44
