A Japanese tea ceremony is a carefully choreographed tradition. The essence of the ritual is aesthetics and art, each gesture and placement thoughtfully considered.

While visiting Kanazawa, the Knapp family and friends take part in an Omotesenke tea ceremony in the historic Higashi Chaya district. Tenley (6), her sisters and their friend Tesla (5) follow along attentively. The matcha (green tea) is definitely an acquired taste, but the ceremony always includes sweet treats, so all is well. Soushi and Chika, the ceremony hosts, explain that the ancient tradition isn't reserved just for holidaysâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; it can make even an ordinary day seem special.
