Rainforests and coral reefs have a lot in common. They are both home to an incredible diversity of plant and animal life. They both produce a large portion of the earth’s oxygen. And both are in great danger from climate change, logging, overfishing and all kinds of human activity. But you, little citizen, can be a rainforest and reef protector! teacollection.com/blog/protect

Take the ferry 45 minutes out to sea from Cairns, Australia, and you’ll find yourself on the tiny island of Fitzroy, a lush rainforest oasis surrounded by white coral beaches and brilliant blue waters that are home to part of the Great Barrier Reef. It was on this unspoiled tropical island that we joined forces with National Geographic Explorer Jess Cramp. Read more about how to help sharks

teacollection.com/blog/jess-cramp

Jess flew in from her home base in the Cook Islands to explore the rainforest, snorkel the reef, and teach us how to help save sharks—which are endangered throughout the world because of the way we fish. The importance of sharks all comes down to the ecosystem, Jess explains. And that matters to everyone, even if the ocean feels like it’s a million miles away from where you live. (Jess herself is from landlocked Pennsylvania!) “Talk to your friends and your family about sharks. Ask your parents where the seafood you eat comes from. As a scientist, I explore ideas and problems and the underwater world. As a kid, you can explore by asking questions. So ask why. A lot!”

A healthy shark population means a healthy coral reef: a balanced ecosystem. A balanced reef means more fish. Healthy reefs also help keep the ocean healthy—and healthy oceans produce our oxygen. teacollection.com/blog/jess-cramp
