At Tea, we believe that special occasions come in many forms. It’s more than just grand affairs or Insta-worthy celebrations (although that's nice, too). It’s not necessarily what you do but whom you share it with. And our clothes, inspired by world travel, make special occasions even more special. This season, our friends at the Quartier Collective planned a family gathering for Tea. Five families from around the globe traveled to the Mediterranean to share meals, share laughter, and share stories. The kids wore fresh new styles inspired by Greece, Egypt, and the sea in between. A Tea Family Gathering The magic of new friendships forged on the road and around a table.

Dinner took a long time to eat on the western slope of Andros Island in the Greek Cyclades. With fiv families gathered around the table, the talk was loud.

Plates disappeared and returned heaping. Artu the puppy searched for morsels dropped or slipped.

Laughter rang through like the sun’s last rays as it slipped over the stony walls and into the Aegean Sea. At some point the kids would be in bed and we would come back to finish the bottle and that story. It wa hard to believe that just a few days earlier we were all strangers. It was hard to believe that tomorrow we would be parting ways.

Some time ago our family stopped traveling to see places and started traveling to find people. All around the world, we imagined, were families like us. Families who cared about the same things we do — striving to be perennially curious and thoughtful, up for adventure, and happy to share. We built our Family Gatherings on the belief that exploring together would be more dynamic and rewarding than doing it alone. We sold our stuff, packed our bags, and departed Seattle with our own three children to prove our theory.

A dozen months and countries after leaving Seattle, we arrived in Andros eager to capture Tea’s new collection while living with other families and forming bonds over our shared adventures.

As we took in our new surroundings, we noticed the ways that Andros is Greece distilled. A tri-color of white, blue, and stone. Strong, gritty coffee. The food grown there, simple and unpretentious.

Soon we met the rest of the families arriving to join our Tea-inspired Family Gathering in Andros. Although we had been strangers until then, by the beginning of that first day the kids were holding hands, planning sleepovers, and helping with each other's luggage.

We spent the next few days wandering through whitewashed streets, diving for urchin, warming ourselves on beaches of stone, and taking photos in Tea outfits that reflect where we were. The kid 11 of them altogether — built their own enchanting world of marble and Lego, sand and stone.

It’s not always comfortable to share space with strangers. In a sense, it’s a deep dive into the lives of people you don’t know. But the families who joined us saw the arc: how strangers become friends, then siblings, how squabbles start and how they end. They watched their children’s curiosity overflow, liberated in the presence of other kids who also find that cave wondrous, that alley mysterious, that fish market perplexing. And it’s not just the little ones who win.

Gathering as families in a foreign land demands an open-heartedness and a willingness to loosen our grip on the self-reliance we’ve been trained to value as adults. We need each other when we travel. And if we’re curious and open we’re rewarded with memories and connections that last a lifetime.

The bonds that we made on the island will stay with us in the years to come. We may have all arrived on Andros as strangers, but when we boarded the ferry back to Athens on our last day, we walked together and we were like family.

Taryn, Martin, and their three children packed their bags and hit the road for full-time travel in 2018. They have worked their way through Europe, Southeast Asia, and North Africa. They’re currently Australia as they launch a series of Family Gatherings, multi-family, experiential travel events around the world.

A highlight of our design team’s inspiration trip is the time they get to spend with local artists. At Tea, we believe that to be truly immersed in a new culture, you must travel beyond the famous landmarks and fancy restaurants and see the city through the eyes of a local. On our trip to Greece, we were fortunate to have our spring artist collaborator, Anna of Lila Ruby King, whose paintings feel like a love letter to the Mediterranean, take us off the beaten path.
