Incorporated in 1874, Terrell has glorious examples of the architectural styles that were popular in this era. Established as a depot town along the Texas and Pacific railroad companies’ line from Longview to California, Terrell became the headquarters of the Texas Midland Railroad, which was one of the nation’s most prosperous short-line railroads. Today, Terrell is a welcoming town with charming downtown shops and dining, and events such as the home tour in December and the Terrell Heritage Jubilee in the Spring. The Christmas in a Small Town Home Tour is a fund-raising event organized by The Social Science Club, established in 1894 to promote “a better acquaintance among those interested in educational attainments and to enlarge opportunities for intellectual development and service.” “The annual Christmas Home Tour and Gala help raise funds for local charities, civic and educational organizations, and scholarships, while creating awareness of the historic city of Terrell,” notes tour chairwoman Donna Broder. The tour hours are 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.. The Christmas Shoppe, open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., will be in the Rockwall and Brin Church of Christ, 407 North Rockwall Street. Local and regional vendors will offer holiday decor, antiques, stocking stuffers and gift items for the whole family along with hot chocolate and warm cider. beautifully presented because, as Linda notes, “we eat with our eyes first.” Customers Annamarie and Eddie Kolodzieg discovered Into My Garden years ago when their daughter attended a tea party here. For the past several years, they have been coming here for lunch once a week. “It’s a nice quiet atmosphere and the food is always good. We get the same thing every time – the sampler,” Annamarie says. “It’s always consistent, and there is a nice variety,” Eddie notes. It’s a special setting where her husband does not feel outof-place and Annamarie can enjoy all the special touches. “I always like looking at the silver and the pretty glassware,” she said. “It’s very pleasant and the staff is so nice.” Shirley Shipman, who recently came in for lunch with 12 members of her church group, the Divas Out and About, from First Baptist in Garland, has been a regular for over a decade (Into My Garden opened in 1999). “I used to come with my mother and my sister, and then I came with my granddaughter,” she said. Her Divas group dines out together once a month and “I knew they would love this. It’s always wonderful!” As Linda says, “It’s a great place for rekindling a friendship and for making memories. Frequently we’ll have grown women come in and say they had their 15th birthday party here. Linda and Jennifer became coowners of Into My Garden in 2011, and they made a conscious decision to keep the tearoom unchanged because they loved the feeling of it. Jennifer, the chef, enjoys trying new recipes, such as the apricot almond chicken salad, and some wonderful desserts. However, the Royal Doulton china, the floral accents, the charming tea pots, the princesses and teddy bears that are used for children’s tea parties, and the fabulous hats on display, have always been a part of Into My Garden’s charm. The tearoom is a fixture in Plano for lunch, bridal showers, women’s group gatherings, afternoon tea, princess tea parties and children’s birthday parties, holiday teas,

bridal showers and baby showers. The fare is best described as classic tearoom cuisine that sets the bar very high. “The secret to attracting a loyal following is the consistency and quality of our food,” Linda shares. “We are high on product integrity, and people tell us it is always delicious.” The flavorful iced teas are infused with fruit, herbs or flowers. Guests can choose from a mahogany chest with numerous tea bags for hot tea. And for afternoon tea, fine loose teas are served in a teapot. Into My Garden’s Tea Room Sampler is always a showstopper, with an amazing velvety smooth quiche, a seasonal soup, New Orleans pasta salad, and a choice of wild rice salad or chicken salad elegant.
We always think chicken salad is what separates a good tearoom from a great tearoom, and Into My Garden’s Chicken Salad Elegant is one of the best, with cranberries and walnuts creating the perfect combination of flavors. On the dessert list, the Incredibly Delicious Chocolate Cake and buttermilk pie are among the biggest crowd pleasers. “Sometimes we have people come in and order dessert first,” Linda smiles. Jennifer greatly enjoys the creative aspect of owning a tearoom. “I’ve made some of the hats for the tearoom, and I love cooking and coming up with new things for the teas,” she said. Into My Garden is open Monday through Saturday from 11 – 2:30. Afternoon tea is available by reservation, and catering is available for those who want to entertain at home with Into My Garden’s incomparable quiche, salads, soups and desserts. With the holidays approaching, and the many family meals that entails, any quick tips for proper table manners?
Sharing a meal with family and friends can be very rewarding. During the holidays, it is a special time to gather around the table, to connect and renew bonds. It is a time of strengthening relationships and creating memories. Remember that people are more important than decorations or food. They may not remember what the decorations looked like or what they ate, but they will always remember how you made them feel. One of my favorite quotes by Emily Post says, “Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter which fork you use.� That being said, etiquette is still important so here are a few quick tips for happier, more gracious mealtimes: 1. Turn off cell phones and other electronics. Turn off the television. Try nice music in the background instead. 2. The choicest morsels at the meal are the words that come out of our mouths. Remember that our words are powerful and have the ability to build others up or tear them down. Beginning the meal with humble thanks expresses a thankful attitude. One suggestion for getting the conversation started on the right tone would be to take turns sharing something you are grateful for. Also remember that there are topics that are not proper for table conversation such as politics and medical issues.
