Explore Waxahachie’s Enchanting Historic Homes
The City of Waxahachie is only about 35 miles from Dallas, but its nostalgic ambiance and period architecture dating to the glory days of the late 1800s and early 1900s, make it feel a world away from the metroplex. It has the kind of charm that movies are made of, and it has been featured in a number of films and commercials. Some of the homes that make Waxahachie so captivating are featured in 45th Annual Gingerbread Trail Tour of Homes June 1 and 2. These homes, and all the surrounding activities of the tour weekend, make it a wonderful time to visit Waxahachie. During the late 1800s through the 1920s, Ellis County was among the wealthiest areas of the state, largely because of
its cotton and subsequent industry and commerce, according to home tour materials. Many of its residents, farmers, bankers and industrialists, built these large, beautiful homes, and notable public buildings, such as the Famous Ellis County Courthouse, were constructed as well. Today, Waxahachie is still blessed to have many of these buildings. In addition to the home tours, activities of the weekend include: Saturday and Sunday: an arts and crafts fair, food, children’s activities and music in Getzendaner Park, Plein Aire painting and art show; courthouse tours Saturday only: Farmer’s Market; Midlothian Classic Wheels benefit car show on the square; Living Magazine metal art show; FlyIn pancake breakfast and aircraft display at Midway Airport; Movie “Places in the Heart” and art sales at Getzendaner Park; Master Gardeners garden tour Sunday only: Studebaker Club car show on the Square. The hostesses follow Terri’s advice to be creative, putting time and lots of thought into making their tables spectacular. This year’s tables included a colorful, textural “Taste of Asia,” a pretty pink table that was

Porterfield conveyed that hats were a critical accessory to help women feel feminine in the 1940s World War II era, when fabric was in short supply. “During the war you could only use three or four yards to make a dress, so you would use a hat to customize� the look. Costume jewelry was another way to turn up the wattage. Porterfield related the majority of vintage costume jewelry was produced in the U.S., and pieces from the States are the most desirable. “It’s not real jewelry; it’s costume, but it is like a work of art,� he explained.

Porterfield remarked that vintage fashion first became popular in the 1960s, and styles from the 1950s and 1960s are the most popular eras for vintage clothing today. Several of the outfits featured in the show resembled dresses that are currently in style, proving that timeless designs never go out of style. The show attracted a full-house. Guests enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea before the show. Sponsors for the event were Sherrie McCall of Chocolate Angel Cafe and Tearoom, and Marilyn Harris of Chic Cherie Vintage Clothing and Jewelry. Fashion shows are held at High Street twice a year with the next one scheduled for September focusing on Holiday Fashions and Homecoming. The February 2014 Show will be inspired by Downton Abbey.

The Quilter’s Guild of Dallas recently honored four outstanding guild members with its Founders Award and Silver Thimble Award.
Quilting Comfort for America’s Heroes by D. Michelle Lindsey Quilters, are you looking for a way to give back to your community but don’t know how? Quilts of Valor Foundation is a non-profit organization that makes, collects and distributes quilts to America’s service members touched by war.
Pictured left to right are Judy Kriehn, Guild Present; Carol Dickschat, Founder’s Award; Mary Lord, Silver Thimble; Fran Casey, Silver Thimble; and Martha Smith, Silver Thimble. The Founder’s Award honors someone who has been a members for at least five years and has consistently furthered the goals of the Guild. The Silver Thimble Award honors someone who has been a member for at least three years and has gone above and beyond in their volunteer duties. The awards are presented annually. The late Helene Hibbs, founder of the Dallas Quilt Guild, initiated the awards in 1984. Nominations are solicited from Guild membership, and a committee of past recipients chooses the award winners.

Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) has distributed more than 83,000 quilts, but there are many more service members on the list. Quilts are awarded at many different levels: they may go to military hospitals where Chaplains award them to service members, there may be presentations of quilts of valor to entire service units returning from combat deployments, they may be awarded at VA’s, or presented individually. But no matter how a quilt of valor is given, the impact it delivers is unequivocal. You can participate in a nationwide project celebrating QOVF’s 10th anniversary by visiting their website at www.qovf.org and downloading their 10th anniversary block, and making a quilt. Their goal is to make 100 Quilts of Valor by November 2013. This organization depends on donations and volunteers to reach its goal of saying “thank you” to these heroes. While trying to think of a way to share my flower garden with our family, I decided to have an old fashion Tea party on our lawn in Spring, TX. Since that first tea in 2003, we have grown to nearly 60 family members, including 25 young nieces, nephews, and grandchildren; all growing up with memories of Tea in the garden. “From the turn of the century through the 1960’s, the local soda fountain was the cornerstone of every Main Street USA. Often housed in the drug store, the neighborhood soda fountain counter served as a social gathering place for people of all ages. Teenagers spent countless hours sipping malted milkshakes and feeding the jukebox while the older folks sipped coffee and shared stories. In September 2010, Danon Maynard began creating the business plans and ideas, identifying the future location for just a spot. TT: Thanks for bringing back the retro-hip counter service, where can we grab an old fashioned milkshake? DM: Nonnie’s Soda Fountain is located at 102 Market Street in Historic Downtown Tomball, it’s a throwback to the soda shops of the 1940s and ’50s. After more than a year of planning we opened in March of 2012. TT: Do you keep busy at Nonnie’s? DM: During city events at the Depot Plaza we serve
thousands during a 3-day period. On regular business days we s e r v e hundreds per day, especially weekends. TT: Old-fashioned sodas are the hottest thing in cold drinks. What’s your vision? DM: We specialize in American soda fountain classics that are creatively distinct. At Nonnie’s we specialize in being a unique meeting place by combining a welcoming community-centered atmosphere, moderate prices and warm service. Our aim is to be known as a friendly place. A place everyone goes to after games or play. A place for first dates, playdates and a senior social destination, a place to take your date or your three-year-old on a Saturday night. Our ice cream is homemade. We specialize in our special recipes of oldfashioned chicken salad, potato soup, club sandwiches, homemade brownies, cobblers and unbelievable special ice cream sundaes

TT: The staff looks great in bright aprons, how many employees do you have? DM: Thanks, we have some of Tomball’s best high school students working for us in addition to experienced cooks. We currently have more than 15 employees. TT: You have great energy, please tell us a little bit about yourself. DM: I’ve lived in the Tomball area for over 20 years and recently retired from HewlettPackard after 24 years of employment and my favorite lunch is chicken salad on homemade white bread, loaded baked
TT: Cool vinyl records are repurposed as menus at Nonnie’s, what entrees do you offer? DM: We serve delicious hot dogs, kraut dogs, grilled cheese, Reubens and turkey & bacon club sandwiches. We make delicious milk shakes and malts from any of our homemade ice cream specials, and we love coming up with new and different creations. Visit four generations of “soda jerks” at Nonnie’s. Danon’s mother was a soda jerk in Paris, TX in the 1940’s, her grandmother was a soda jerk in Paris in the 1950’s, and her granddaughter, Rhegan, is “in training”. In the 50’s Danon remembers sitting at the counter and her grandmother would make her the best chocolate ice cream sodas ever.

She was born in Michigan in the 50’s into a middle income traditional family. The fall after her high school graduation changed her life. Everything seemed to be on track and normal until her friend Jean Hammond called and invited her to come to her New Year’s Eve party. The only problem with that was it was in Houston, Texas. Theresa Rea decided to drive to the party alone. She never went back to Michigan to live. She slept on Jean’s couch until she landed her first job. When I asked her more detail about her first position she was hesitant to give a lot of detail. Being the inquisitive friend I am I continued to press. Her goal to be a designer actually started at a PORTA CAN COMPANY! Next time you are visiting a Porta Can take a moment and thank her for the design and comfort of the unit! Her career goals still unfulfilled, she was still in full search for a new position. Her next opportunity came in the oil and gas business. Before long she had a six figure income and was traveling on corporate jets. Theresa would work on large projects with Exxon designing the interior of their new offices.
Things were going well until she noticed a lump in her breast Theresa always loved clothes, shoes, purses, and especially jewelry. Making jewelry was a way to express the beauty she saw in the world. She would see a piece of art or a sculpture and recreate it as a piece of jewelry. She could design anything, but her favorite pieces were more rustic using wire, pieces of metal, and leather. At first her passion for making jewelry came in the form of giving gifts to her loved ones. Soon others saw the pieces and wanted her to design special pieces for them. As we all know, the economy took a fall a few years ago, and Theresa was laid off her job. At first she didn’t seem to worry, but as weeks turned into two years she was becoming desperate for an income. So, her love of jewelry design became a career. Things were going well, until as Theresa was planning to attend her son’s wedding, she noticed a lump in her breast. With all the activity surrounding the wedding she did not get to the doctor for a few weeks. The news was not good. She had a rare form

Time is not on Theresa’s side. The cancer is moving quickly taking more things away from her everyday. Just eating is a chore for her. Those of us that love her will miss her greatly. I mean who really wears a hot pink wig? I loved being with her, laughing with her, seeing the beauty in simple things, and am not sure how I will fill the void. I have told her about my loved ones that are in Heaven, and she plans to look them up and share the fun things we have done. I still have many family members and friends but none like my friend, the Lady with the Pink Hair. Thank you for allowing me the time to tell you about my special friend.
Always Giving Theresa donated all of her jewelry supplies to, Turning Point, an organization for underserved girls. They are making jewelry and will sell it for funds to attend theater and art shows. of breast cancer. That was a really difficult time for her. Theresa was placed on disability and rarely found the Theresa’s handmade bridal tiara made time or energy from a brides vintage family broche. to create new designs, much less attend shows. This story does not get better, as just when we thought she had beat it, she again became ill around Christmas 2012. What we hoped was the flu turned out to be the cancer returning, this time with a mighty blow. So much so that she declined more chemo and chose to place her illness in God’s hands. It is incredible to all that know her how she has managed to retain her sense of humor and wit. She is such a funny lady. When I see her I always leave with a sense of being in God’s company. She now lives in a hospice home in Houston. She is wheelchair bound and in a lot of pain, but she is always up for company or a chat with a friend on the phone. I find her amazing. If you visit her she is in her bed and in pain, but she always asks “Can I get you anything?”

The Lakeway Associates of Seton hosted their 8th annual fundraising High Tea on January 19th at The Hills Country Club in Lakeway, Texas. After being greeted by gracious hostesses, guests mingled and admired the artfully decorated tables. With themes ranging from whimsical to elegant, guests enjoyed voting for their favorite tablescapes. Along with the decorations, the ladies annual hat competition featured everything from vintage to glitz, providing a bit of glamour to the event. Judges from Suzie D’s boutique gave awards for ‘Most Unique,’ ‘Best Fascinator,’ and ‘Best Themed’ hats. A scrumptious buffet added to the tea’s ambiance. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the music and recreational therapy programs at Seton Shoal Creek Hospital, and many lives will be touched as a result. Seton Shoal Creek Hospital is the only mental health-care facility in Central Texas offering mental and behavioral health services for children, teens, and adults.

Happy spring! As I write this, today is officially Earth Day. I think it should be a great reminder that every day is Earth Day, and to where the actual credit goes! So in humble recognition of the Authority that brought us this glorious planet and all that springs forth, I hereby pronounce every day as Earth Day.
So, last issue we left with a teaser about Brandy Oolong. Unique to Taiwan , this heavily oxidized oolong could initially be mistaken for a black tea; but at about 85% oxidation, it indeed is an oolong. Known for its unique flavor profile and creamy body, Brandy Oolong is quickly growing in popularity among oolong lovers. Although Brandy Oolong can come from several different cultivars or varietals, the resulting liquor is dark amber with aromatic notes of roasted sugar and stone fruit. We love the mouth feel on this tea! It is so smooth and complex and has a great sweet finish. Some people experience a subtle camphor taste as well. The Taiwanese are quite creative and diligent in creating new teas. One particular cultivar known as Ruby 18 (which is great for creating Brandy Oolong) took decades in testing before being released to farmers for planting. It was worth the wait. Ruby 18 is a unique hybrid of an assam and an indigenous varietal. Brandy Oolongs, while still pretty rare in the US , can be a great alternative to black teas, and an exciting new choice in the growing stable of Taiwanese Oolongs.

Teatime memories stay forever in the heart...
Bling it on: Afternoon tea in the Skyview Bar at Burj Al Arab by Ben Schlappig Ben is a travel consultant, travel writer, and avid points collector living in Bellevue, Washington. He travels over 300,000 miles per year and spends around 100 nights per year in hotels. Ben blogs at boardingarea.com/blogs/onemileatatime . For those of you not familiar with the Burj Al Arab, it’s the world’s only seven star hotel, whatever that means. When I was in Dubai last December I had afternoon tea at the Burj Al Arab. However, I was only able to reserve a table at Sahn Eddar, the hotel’s lobby lounge. This time around I was hoping to have afternoon tea at the Skyview Bar, which is located on the 27th floor of the hotel.
Service began with a glass of champagne, which was Louis Roederer Brut. That was quickly followed by an artfully presented berry tart with cream.
The second course was the “chef’s carvery of the day,” which was some sort of beef with potato.
We were planning only a couple of days in advance, so I figured we had virtually no chance of securing a table. I sent off an email to their reservations department, and was shocked to receive a confirmation for afternoon tea at the Skyview Bar for 1PM on our day of arrival.
At this point coffee/tea orders were taken. I ordered both a cup of vanilla infused tea and an iced coffee. They encourage you to try as many as you’d like, so I certainly took them up on that.
While those orders were put in, we were offered a selection of finger sandwiches, each of which was explained to us in great detail. We were offered more sandwiches, though had to turn them down as seven courses is plenty for us.
As was the case last time, I found the public areas of the hotel to be a complete spectacle. The hotel guests seemed to mostly either be Middle Easterners or older Russian men with their daughters wives. Meanwhile there were people at the hotel just to enjoy afternoon tea, which seemed to be mostly Brits and Japanese people, both of which were taking pictures as if it were a red carpet function (hey, I was part of that group too!).

After briefly touring the hotel we took the elevator to the Skyview Bar at around 12:45PM and “checked in.” We were invited to take a seat, as our table would be ready shortly. If you’re having afternoon tea at either of the facilities it’s worth noting that they seat tables in order, starting with the best tables by the window. So the earlier you arrive, the better table you’ll get. We were among the first there, so got an awesome table by the window. The bar is interesting in that it feels more like a cruise ship from the late 90s than the world’s most expensive hotel. Though I guess it does feel a bit gaudy/tacky, which fits in with the theme of the hotel. Our waitress was a lovely lady from Indonesia, and she familiarized us with the menu and explained that we could have as much as we wanted of everything, except champagne, which was an extra 150AED (~$40.50USD) per glass beyond the first one.
The last course was a lychee and rose sorbet, along with Christmas cookies.
The tea service included seven courses of exquisitely made confections. We were offered a tiered tray of sweets, presented on a “Burj Al Arab” hotel-inspired carrier. We were also offered a to-go box with more packaged sweets.
The afternoon tea is seven courses and costs 450AED (~$122USD) per person, which must be among the biggest and most expensive afternoon teas out there.
I’ve now had afternoon tea at both Sahn Eddar (the lobby bar) and the Skyview Bar, and definitely enjoyed the latter more for the amazing views.
We left the Grosvenor House at around 12:15PM and made it to the Burj Al Arab at around 12:30PM. The hotel is located on a manmade island, and there’s no public access allowed. So at the gate you have to show your confirmation before they’ll let you enter.
Obviously afternoon tea here is outrageously expensive, and it’s not something you have to experience multiple times. That being said, I think everyone that visits Dubai should make an effort to have afternoon tea here once, as it’s an unforgettable experience.
