NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2017

It’s on for 2017...

February 2017 As the manufacture of the car progresses, we sat down with project manager Mark Ascott for a chat about the team’s objectives for the 2017 season.

The whole team is working hard to meet these objectives and we think that 2017 will be the year Team Bath Racing win Formula Student UK.

“The aim of TBR17 is to win Formula Student UK 2017. To achieve this aim, we have three objectives: 3 Months Testing, Statics Event Focus and Maximising Transient Performance. With three months testing we will be able to test and optimise our car, working out any issues should they arise meaning we have a reliable, high performance car. This means our car must be assembled by the start of April, a tough target but one we are on track to achieve.

Last year we proved that a focus on the static events can make the difference between a good performance and a great performance, helping push us to first place in FS Czech. This year we will continue to put great emphasis on the static events to help us achieve our aim. By maximising transient performance, we can ensure that our design is optimised for minimal mass and lower centre of gravity, as well as optimised area specific targets. This will help us to create a lightweight, fast car which will challenge the top teams in the world. The whole team is working hard to meet these objectives and we think that 2017 will be the year Team Bath Racing win Formula Student UK.” Top (From Left): Marko Mann, Alex Mercer, Edward Fishwick, George Baldwin, James Hudson, James Wilson, Guy Huxley Middle (From Left): Marios Mouzouras, Jack Linley, Laura Grubb, Rob Beynon, Boon Sheng Lang, Tom Simpson, Pranav Vaswani, Tom Clarke, Oli Cartlidge

More of this in 2017...

Williams Martini Racing

Santander Signing Event

Back in October, our technical leads visited Williams Martini Racing at their factory in Grove, Oxfordshire. We brought our car to show support to a company which has been close to us for a number of years, with many of our alumni joining them upon graduation. We had the honour of parking TBR16 in one of the assembly bays used to build the legendary Formula 1 cars (background picture). Three of the five finalists selected for the Williams Autosport Engineer of the Future Award are TBR team members, demonstrating our ability to produce engineers of F1 caliber who look forward to outstanding motorsport careers with Williams and other teams at the front of the grid. 50 Year Anniversary In October, Team Bath Racing were invited to ‘Party on Parade’ in celebration of the University of Bath’s 50th anniversary! The event featured exciting activities as well as performances from various student societies. We displayed the car near the main stage, with Team Bath Racing members on hand throughout the day to chat with university students, staff, alumni and the chancellor, His Royal Highness the Earl of Wessex. This was a fun day and an excellent chance to promote the team and show our appreciation for the support we get from the University and the Bath Alumni! Words-Laura Grubb www

Team Bath Racing attended an event on campus to celebrate the signing of the university’s most recent partnership agreement with Santander Universities. This was an opportunity to say thank you for the generous support that Santander provide to the team as part of their wider agreement with the University of Bath. We were able to display the car, which sparked an interest amongst attendees as they mingled around beverages and live musical performances. Team members thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the opportunity to meet senior Santander staff and answer their questions about Team Bath Racing and Formula Student.

As the team returned to Bath after a memorable and rewarding summer, the TBR engineers were gently brought back up to speed whilst getting to grips with Computer Aided Design tools again. Meanwhile, in the chassis department, frantic work was coming to fruition; with the arrival of our 2017 chassis patterns. TBR17’s design includes a full carbon fibre monocoque, which is possibly the biggest innovation in this year’s car. It encompasses a shift away from previous hybrid carbon-steel chassis designs, which comes with a number of challenges for our chassis team. After a summer of work between Vehicle Dynamics and Chassis engineers, our designs were completed early October, and sent to our technical advisors for machining – marking the beginning of our manufacturing process. Within four weeks the patterns began to arrive, gently driven back to Bath, with care not to damage the impressive work produced so far.

www

This is where TBR17 became real for the rest of the team. Long nights and early mornings on the weekends to ensure our carbon moulds could be cured on the cold Monday mornings. Some team members spending up to 30+ hours of their free time to make our dream a reality. Chassis technical lead Oli Cartlidge comments: “The mammoth undertaking means as we speak, we are only 60% of the way to getting our moulds finished, but we are confident that our end product will be such that it is all worth the sleepless nights. Well, maybe…”
