SIMPLIFYING PAYMENTS DATA PCN: Tell us about Tenner. How did this idea come to be?

institutions have difficulty scaling and providing value-added services to their merchants.

Kellogg: Tenner is a FinTech startup based in Amsterdam, a city that many consider to be the FinTech and Payments capital of Europe. The three co-founders are myself, Marc van Piggelen and Arco Zaanen. Arco has a long history in the business intelligence technology space and more than ten years experience in developing data analytics platforms. Marc and I both have extensive backgrounds in payments, working for global acquirers and PSPs. It was while working at our former employers that we saw payments data becoming more important and the benefits it brings to merchants. However, many payment providers are still unable to provide their merchants with meaningful insights into their data. There are several key takeaways from those experiences and the principles for founding Tenner:

3. There is not a single provider in the market that offers a complete all-in-one payment data services offering, from securely gathering all your payment providers data to matching and reconciliation.

1. With the proliferation of new payment methods and eWallets globally, merchants need to manage growing fragmentation; with different integrations, settlement and reporting. 2. Consumer facing technology (e.g. front-end checkout) is receiving all the attention, but the back-end merchant facing infrastructure still has a lot to gain. Much of the industry infrastructure is built on legacy technology, so financial

4. Some merchants find it challenging to fully understand their payments and the surrounding process, and cannot always rely on their payment provider for advice. At Tenner, we do all this and work as a trusted, independent advisor to merchants and financial institutions. PCN: Why is it called Tenner? Kellogg: In England, a tenner is informal for a ten-pound note. We landed on Tenner because we wanted a name that was short, easy to remember and has the link to payments. PCN: Why is Tenner needed? Kellogg: There is significant value to be gained from payment data, but you need to be able to make your data useful. The problem is that merchants don’t always have access to their data, and if they do, they don’t know how to

make sense of it all. Payments is still very much a specialized industry. With merchants’ data spread across multiple providers including American Express and PayPal, merchants today need to download various file formats and import large files into excel, this is a time consuming and mostly manual process. Merchant data is also isolated within each payment provider (i.e. data silos), and data is not shared amongst providers in the industry, making reconciliation difficult, time-consuming and error prone. At Tenner, we provide various payment data services to meet the needs of every size company. We provide our customers with a single data platform from which all their payments data is collected, normalized and analyzed. We break the numbers down into actionable insights, helping them to boost revenue and reduce payment related costs. For merchants that are looking to bring payments expertise in-house, we offer a flexible Payments Manager as-a-Service to help optimize and streamline their payments strategy. Tenner can also automate the reconciliation process for merchants to allow them to focus on exceptions rather than manually matching all transactions from all providers. We also partner with PSPs, acquirers and banks so that they can offer payment analytics to their merchants. Partners can integrate Tenner into their own customer portal with our payments reporting API or make use of our custom interactive dashboard. PCN: What are some of your biggest challenges for launching this business? Kellogg: Starting a company similar to Tenner is not for the faint hearted. To build an intelligencepayments-data platform you need the right mix of expertise and skills. Developing such a platform requires technologists that have experience building a flexible and scalable platform and payment professionals that understand the payments ecosystem inside and out. Most payment platforms are built for processing transactions and have limited capabilities in reporting. There is also no commonality amongst providers, so we created a database that translates the input of data collected into one common language.

KELLOGG FAIRBANK Co-founder Kellogg Fairbank is a co-founder of Tenner, a payment data services company. He is a technology executive and entrepreneur with more than 10 years experience in the payments industry, primarily working for global PSPs and gateways, including Braintree and Venmo, PayPal, 2C2P and GlobalCollect (now Ingenico ePayments).

ABOUT TENNER Tenner is an Amsterdam based payment data services company that provides the technology rails for merchants, PSPs, acquirers and banks to gain actionable insights and reports into all their payment data. We leverage our extensive payments and business intelligence industry experience with a technology stack that empowers our customers to take control of and exploit their data. Our suite of payment data services includes: Payments Data Platform, Payments Manager, Payments Reporting API and Payments Reconciliation.

Another challenge is the processing of the payment transaction data. Many payment providers are able to give you raw data, but you’ll still need to understand it, make the data uniform across providers and enrich it to be able to make the data actionable. Lastly, convincing merchants of the intrinsic value payments data provides can be challenging at times. To overcome this you really need to show them what can be achieved with the data and how they can benefit. PCN: Tell us more about the technology behind Tenner? Kellogg: We’ve built a platform that specializes in collecting, normalizing and analyzing payments data. The platform is built in Python and runs in the cloud. The main advantage for using the cloud is that it makes scalability and redundancy easier, which brings down our Total Cost of Ownership. Let’s take a closer look at the different components: With the collecting phase we use custom built connectors for the specific PSPs and acquirers. Additionally, we can integrate merchant specific order data feeds into the platform. This is where the real value comes into play, linking the orders over different platforms to the payment transactions. This is where we like to think our platform excels. Secondly, we process and normalize the data. This is quite a challenging process, as you need to have a robust master data management system and procedures in place. At Tenner, we’ve taken the best data warehouse designs and combined this with the open source processing frameworks. The last component is to analyze the data. We’ve designed the flexible and intuitive dashboard in Angular.js that’s been built on top of an analytical REST API.

PCN: What are the 3 most important things you want people to know about your company? Kellogg: We offer a complete range of services based on merchants’ payment data, services that help them to increase revenue and reduce costs with actionable insights. Some examples of things we can help with are to uncover hidden opportunities, monitor the impact of 3D Secure on conversion, payment methods costs vs success, benchmark your payment providers, trends analysis, understand acquirer response codes and check performance against KPIs. We offer all this and a lot more across all your payment providers and payment methods. What merchants really like is the fact that no IT resources are required from their side to implement our solutions. We work with our merchants to integrate our platform and partner with them to implement practical and effective solutions. I also think it is important to note that many companies don’t have the budget to pay for a payments manager, so we have designed the Payments Manager as-a-Service to meet the needs of any size company. With the data readily available in our platform and our payments managers’ expertise, we help merchants optimize and streamline their payments process. PCN: What does the future look like for Tenner? We are busy listening to our customers to further develop the roadmap for 2019 and beyond. Smart notifications are on the roadmap as is integrating with more PSPs, acquirers and banks to ensure merchants have end-to-end control over their financial flows. Another area we are enthusiastic about is integrating machine learning and AI. There is definitely a lot of work ahead but plenty to look forward to. The team is very excited heading into 2019!

DATA-DRIVEN ENTERPRISES: THE IMMINENT TRANSFORMATION OF MERCHANTS AND PSPS The commerce and payments industries have been developing at a fast pace with no sign of the slightest pause. Every single industry conversation features two recurring topics: data science and artificial intelligence (AI). Most companies are aware of the impact that data science initiatives can have on any business. This awareness contributes to a trend that we currently see: a transformation journey that organizations such as merchants, payment providers and banks are either adopting or will be forced to go through in the near future. The consumer-driven transformation Just like all major trends in the industry, this transformation has been determined by the modern consumers. Here we’re talking about the omnichannel consumers empowered by technology, who naturally expect a flawless, convenient experience from any organization they interact with. 8 | THOUGHT LEADER | PAYVISION

Companies managing to meet these demanding expectations gain in turn, their precious loyalty. If we look at Netflix, Spotify, Airbnb, Uber we instantly think of their great success and what they all have in common: the way they use information to understand and connect with their customers. How do they achieve this? By creating complex models on consumer behavior patterns; then all this detailed data on customers is integrated into all the touch points these companies have with their customers, ensuring a high level of personalization. Being part of the omnichannel era means that merchants have an increasing amount of data coming from different sources such as online, in-store, mobile and social. This makes up a massive volume of information that’s considered

one of the most valuable resources to grow and optimize their business – just as The Economist stated back in May 2017, data is the new oil. Becoming data-driven – what does it take? Making use of data in a successful, resultdriven way requires strategy, expertise and investment. However, many companies are not able to take advantage of the opportunities data has to offer due to a common lack of understanding of and investment in the optimal technologies and skills required. So what does it take to become data-driven? You certainly don’t just need expensive technologies and PhD employees. A real must is centralizing and understanding all the available data in order to provide a common playbook that your employees can work with to unlock the value in the data. One of the reasons, cited by McKinsey, many industries have failed to use data science as a true business asset is siloed data. Having the discipline to simplify and streamline data management practices enables you to have the freedom to connect the data dots with less energy and innovate for your customers. It’s often the things that feel like chores that upon completion allow you to be more effective at the fun things too. Being a complex process, many merchants or merchant services providers have been confronted with the challenge of keeping their data lake from becoming of a data swamp. For us, at Payvision, simplifying the data management landscape has enabled us to place data science and artificial intelligence/machine learning at the core of our business strategy. Leveraging on these emergent technologies and methods we managed to equip ourselves to provide best in class fraud products, reporting and strategic insights to our merchants. With customers constantly demanding an improved omnichannel experience, it’s hard to achieve excellence on your own. In this context, companies can overcome challenges in a more efficient way by working together instead of trying to replace one another. We need to complement each other to create products

NATHAN TROUSDELL VP Data Services Nathan Trousdell joined Payvision in 2014. He worked with the founders and department managers on strategic initiatives across many company areas including strategic investments and merger & acquisition activity, operational finance, sales strategy, data science and business intelligence. Since 2016 he has spent much of his time focusing on growing the company’s big data and data science capabilities.

ABOUT PAYVISION Founded in 2002, Payvision is at the forefront of the payments industry, growing at a very fast pace. As a global card acquirer, Payvision has built an independent, international acquiring network connecting payment service providers and their global merchants in the Europe, US, Asia and the Pacific. Payvision offers a global processing platform, 24/7 support, 150+ transaction currencies, a high-end reporting interface and a solid risk management solution. Through its data-driven payments platform, Payvision supports merchants to trade easier through a fast, secure processing platform for all worldwide transactions.

matching the needs of the omnichannel consumer. At Payvision, we’ve partnered with specialized companies that helped us focus on merchants and their customer needs, such as Cloudera for our underlying big data stack. Then there is Sift Science providing best in class machine learning fraud prevention. Moreover, ING invested in us and now holds a 75% stake. This creates a unique combination of payments and banking products, which we are deploying through our vast worldwide networks. Through this transformation we have transitioned to become trusted advisors and are now able to offer our merchants great insights into how to eliminate risk, enhance customer experience and maximize their revenue. Brief examples of how Payvision utilizes data science in this sense: • We can detect real-time payment fraud while keeping false positives to a minimum. • We have useful insights into the payments journey of the end consumer. • And we have increased the chance of every legitimate transaction being approved, leading to better authorization rates and higher merchant revenues (on average we see a revenue increase of 2% before our data science models are used, and sometimes over 5%). Looking to the future – what can we expect? It’s a given that consumers will only continue to demand enhanced experiences in exchange

for their money. Moreover, as IoT, virtual and augmented reality become part of the omnichannel story, the commerce and payments barriers will continue to fall. With GDPR already implemented, privacy is becoming more personal. Consumers will demand more control over their data and regulation will increase outside Europe. Blockchain is expected to make an impact on the consumers, merchants and risk landscape soon. Once it will overcome its technological hurdles, it’s set to have a major impact; it will be used to allow consumers to choose what data they share with merchants in exchange of discounts and rewards. One interesting area is using blockchain as the basis for digital identity, as it will allow users to be authenticated in a more trustworthy manner. Direct access to a shared blockchain ledger for identity - with trusted institutions as the main anchors - will save companies on the time-consuming KYC process. Lastly, fraud is expected to increase until merchants make the most of technologies such as hand, voice and facial recognition to validate risky transactions, ideally in real time. Nonetheless, since this comes at a certain cost, it may take some time until it becomes common practice. Taking into account the speed of all of the current developments and changes, it’s really important that we all work together as an industry to provide the best experience for end consumers while making sure we protect them from risk and data overreach. It’s what they ask for and it’s what they deserve.

REVOLUT FOR BUSINESS: LIGHT YEARS AHEAD OF TRADITIONAL BUSINESS BANKING Ever since Revolut was founded back in July 2015, the company’s goal was always a simple one - to make banking 10x better, 10x faster and 10x cheaper. One of Europe’s fastest growing tech companies took the market by storm, and today, its’ 3M retail customers enjoy the benefits of using multi-currency current accounts, the interbank exchange rate, free local and international SEPA transfers, instant bill splitting and P2P transfers, instant and seamless exposure to cryptocurrencies, fully customisable card security settings and so much more - all accessible using a sleek app available for Android and iOS devices.

Setting a new standard for corporate banking While consumer banking has been making leaps and bounds over the last couple of years, business banking has well and truly taken a back seat. From long waiting times through to endless fees and dated technology, it became strikingly apparent that a new player had to emerge - one that was ready to completely change the world of business banking like never before. That’s when Revolut decided it was time to disrupt business banking the same way it did with retail. What today is known as Revolut for Business, was launched in July 2017, and set out to solve two main problems: to save its customers’ time and money by building a new type of banking

12 | THOUGHT LEADER | REVOLUT

platform from the ground up. As is everything else with Revolut, setting up a Business account is a fully digital experience, and the signup process takes minutes. Depending on the type of business and the size of the company, it typically only takes around 3 to 5 days to get a fully functioning account, with no need to go into a physical branch, answer unrelated questions or provide unnecessary paperwork. In just a year and a half, over 60,000 companies have already signed up to Revolut for Business, and the number of new companies onboarded every day continues to grow. Revolut for Business allows companies to choose one out of three subscription plans based on their annual revenue, or opt for a freelancer’s account. Once set up, Revolut for Business account gives the company total control over their finances and offers an easy way to manage up to 24 different currencies via a sleek and convenient online banking portal. From managing company-wide accounts, to issuing unlimited corporate cards - it can all be done in just a few clicks. The easiest way to see how much money your company is saving with a Revolut for Business account is when making international payments and exchanging between different currencies - just like with its retail product, Revolut uses the interbank exchange rate during the week, while applying a small markup on weekends and public holidays. This means that anyone working with international merchants or simply paying employees or suppliers in different countries can instantly start to save on fees. The ability to issue unlimited corporate cards also means that employees can spend at the interbank exchange rate

in over 130 currencies around the world, whenever they have to make a purchase for the company. To put things in perspective, since launching the business line, companies with a Revolut for Business account have collectively saved over $20M that they would have otherwise paid on banking fees - all that in under two years of operation. Expense management done right Saving money is one thing, but saving time and minimizing the chance of human error with automation, is what takes Revolut for Business to a whole new level. Every time the team sits down to review the roadmap, the main question they try to answer is, “how do we make running a company easier?” And when you minimize the stress and hassle involved around managing company expenses, you can put more time and energy towards the things that actually matter - running your business. With that in mind, Revolut for Business makes managing your expenses easier than ever, by letting you set up scheduled or bulk payments for things like paying employee salaries. What’s better, is that by providing employees with individual corporate cards, accountants can also easily track the expenses on each card and set up individual spending limits. Every time a company pays for any online subscriptions, companies can also use virtual cards, which provide an added layer of security and can also be blocked and unblocked at any time, from the online banking portal. Revolut Connect - automate work to save time But the real game changer in the industry was the Revolut Connect, which is best understood if you think of it as an app store for business banking. Revolut Connect is the easiest and fastest way to connect your Revolut for Business account to the tools and apps you use every day - be that accounting software or your internal communication tool. We’ve already started building integrations for the most popular business apps out there, including accounting platforms like Xero, FreeAgent, communication tools like Slack, expense management and more. And when you use Revolut Connect to integrate with a third-party app, one of the ways in which Revolut allows its customers to stay in control of their data and security is by letting them decide what data can be shared with each app, as well as having the ability to pause or stop sharing at any time - all

JAMES GIBSON Product Owner As the Product Owner for Revolut for Business, James spends his days building the product, which tens of thousands of customers use everyday to make their lives easier (and save their companies money!). He’s passionate about building a customer-obsessed business account, with a focus on smooth use and the removal of sneaky fees.

ABOUT REVOLUT Launched in 2015, Revolut has over 3 million customers, who can set up an app-based current account in minutes, spend abroad in over 130 currencies with no fees, hold and exchange 24 currencies inapp and send free domestic and international money transfers with the real exchange rate.

from your Revolut Business account. It is also worth mentioning that the account allows you to create different roles with specific permissions for certain actions within the account, so that even if several people can log into the online portal, there will always be a hierarchy suited to each business. Open APIs - the gateway to becoming an open banking platform For more custom integrations, Revolut offers its own Open API, which allows businesses to automate their internal workflows with things like scheduled and mass payments, adding counterparties, as well as webhooks to be notified of new transactions. They’re also looking far beyond simple integrations; aiming to make Revolut for Business a truly open banking platform that others can build great services on top of and create a global community of shareable apps - built by the people, for the people. The company is now working to make the API available to developers, so that they can leverage its capabilities to create their own integrations and apps to share with their customers and the wider business community. One of the most successful use cases with the Open API is the example of ride-hailing app, SnapCar, who’ve effectively created a new USP for themselves by adopting Revolut for Business and using it in a more creative way. The company needed a solution that would allow them to pay their drivers instantly, as opposed to on a weekly or monthly basis. They created a custom integration via the Revolut Business Open API, which sends out payments to drivers after every day spent on the road, all at the tap of a button. This way, SnapCar drivers can cover expenses like fuel and upkeeping from their earnings, not their savings - something which proved to be a good selling point for SnapCar when it came to differentiating themselves from their competitors. For the company, Revolut for Business allows the team to focus on other areas of the business, instead of

dealing with spreadsheets and manually running mass-payments - since the open API requires minimal human intervention. A win-win for everyone involved! No developers? No problem These kinds of integrations with your business account is something that has never been done in the industry thus far, making Revolut live up to its name of a “disruptor”. Allowing users to get even more creative with how they run their finances, Revolut has integrated with Zapier - an online platform that allows you to connect thousands of apps and automate tasks, streamline workflows and ultimately save time. Once your Revolut Business account is up and running, all you need is a Zapier account, and you can already start connecting your business accounts to the thousands of apps supported by Zapier. You can set up the integrations that suit you and then control the notification rules so that they work for your business. The short answer to why you’d need it, is that it just makes your life so much easier. You can think about it this way instead of spending precious time logging entries into spreadsheets and then copying those over to another app, you can run a Zapier integration to automate your tasks - something you only have to do once. This means you’ll be able to get more productive, as you’ll let the ‘zaps’ take care of all the tedious admin work. And the best part is, you just point, click and automate - you don’t even need a developer to do it. So, what’s next? Revolut is not stopping anytime soon. It has a host of features lined up on their product roadmap, including the launch of a mobile app specifically designed for business banking and a developer’s portal where users can create their own custom integrations using the API, most of which will be available to Revolut customers next year - so stay tuned for a host of innovations from the Fintech that is continually redefining our relationship with money.

PROVIDING THE BUILDING BLOCKS FOR GLOBAL CARD PAYMENT ACCEPTANCE As technologies evolve to offer evermore payment options for consumers and globalisation continues at a rapid rate, it is inevitable that merchants want to take advantage of these business opportunities and expand their offerings into new international markets. The lack of interoperability in today’s complex global payments acceptance world however, is hindering merchants’ plans for international expansion. Before merchants can even begin to think about growing their business internationally, they need to put a strategy in place to overcome the challenges presented by the fragmented payments ecosystem. Ensuring that their payment acceptance systems harmonise across borders and deliver the kind of seamless interoperability that they need to expand quickly into new territories is key to a merchant’s global success. These challenges include: • Navigating individual country’s domestic payment regulations and protocols. • Managing costs in an environment where negotiating volume-based deals are not possible due to the lack of cross-border interoperability. • Coordinating the operational and technical headache of managing payments acceptance integration across multiple territories. • Managing domestic legacy system updates are inhibiting innovative payment solutions from being quickly and easily rolled out in multiple geographies. • Creating a consistent user experience at the point of interaction between multiple payment types, and crucially, across borders too. • Relieving the pain of system integration when establishing a relationship with new acquiring banks. • Working with acquirers to ensure the whole acceptance process better serves their international ambitions, today and in the future. 16 | THOUGHT LEADER | NEXO STANDARDS

Interoperability and global payments acceptance standardisation are critical to breaking down these barriers and enabling merchants together with vendors, processors and other payment service providers, from operating efficiently on an international scale. Introducing nexo standards nexo standards is an international association that develops messaging protocols and specifications, which adhere to ISO 20022 standards. The messaging protocols and specifications enable fast, interoperable and borderless payments acceptance by standardising the exchange of payment acceptance data between merchants, acquirers, payment service providers and other payment stakeholders. The nexo suite of messaging protocols and specifications cover the full spectrum of card payment acceptance standardisation, from the acquirer to the terminal to the retailer; they provide the strategic building blocks for payment stakeholders to develop seamless and globally interoperable payment infrastructures: • nexo Fast Specification – based on EMV® chip and PIN technology and describes unambiguously how to develop a financial payment application on a terminal which is compliant to the SEPA Cards Framework of the European Payments Council. • nexo Acquirer Protocol – allows the use of real time or batch submissions as well as supporting direct connections from merchant to acquirer or via a payment service provider intermediary. • nexo Retailer Protocol – defines a set of interfaces between a card payment application and a retail point of sale system. • nexo TMS Protocol – provides an interface between a terminal management system (TMS) and a payment system. It supports the functions for configuring, managing and maintaining the application parameters, the software and the security keys of a payment system. • nexo Implementation Specification – explains how to integrate the nexo messaging protocols and specifications with a compliant nexo FAST payment application.

ARNAUD CROUZET General Secretary Mr Crouzet was elected General Secretary of nexo Standards in 2015. Within this role, Mr Crouzet oversees the activities of the nexo Board, Technical Steering Committee and technical working groups. He also manages the association’s membership, which comprises representatives from the payment acceptance ecosystem. Mr Crouzet also serves as Global Head of Payments Means at Auchan Group.

ABOUT NEXO STANDARDS nexo is an open, global association dedicated to removing the barriers present in today’s fragmented global card payment acceptance ecosystem. nexo has been the very first organisation to design and develop card payment messages based on ISO 20022. The delivery of universal standard and protocols messages ensure the interoperability of different equipment and payment systems, internationally. Headquartered in Brussels, its members represent the full spectrum of card payments stakeholders, including acceptors, processors, card schemes, payment service providers and vendors. nexo standards was established in 2014.

Adopting international payment standards, such as those developed by nexo standards, offers widespread benefits to merchants including: more rapid expansion into new territories, the ability to develop consistent global consumer products and experience significant cost saving through negotiating better volume-based deals with vendors. Standards also provide the unique opportunity for merchants to take on new roles within the payment ecosystem and take charge of their own payment processing requirements. This was the case for leading retailer, Carrefour Group, which took the decision to become its own acceptor and acquirer, and, thanks to integrating nexo’s standards into its payments strategy, it was able to realise significant cost and operational efficiencies. Are these merchant benefits to the detriment of other payment stakeholders? While the benefits to merchants are clear, what might perhaps not be so clear, is how integrating international payment standards benefit other payment stakeholders such as terminal vendors or acquirers. If merchants are negotiating better volume-based deals, does this mean other players end up missing out? Not at all… 18 | PAYMENTS & CARDS MAGAZINE

‘Customer centricity’ are the watch words here. Sure, innovation and a fairer playing field are defining factors of any open, standardised market but, with nexo, every stakeholder in the card payment acceptance chain has the ability to serve their customer better. Vendors are empowered to expand their offering internationally; once a deal is struck with a merchant, this opens the doors for the vendor to not only support a merchants’ needs in Europe for example, but also support the merchant as it ‘goes global’, creating bigger and wider business opportunities for the vendor as well. The same goes for acquirers. nexo’s protocols facilitate fast, simple and borderless integration with other nexo-compliant payments stakeholders. In turn, this lays the foundations for acquirers to form partnerships with new merchants and vendors on a truly global scale, reducing time-to-market and increasing confidence in these new partnerships. The messaging protocols and specifications from nexo standards offer huge potential to deliver greater operational efficiency and meet a variety of core business challenges that, when overcome, enable all payments industry stakeholders to get ahead of the competition in both domestic and international markets.

NEXO IN ACTION: CRÉDIT MUTUEL CM11: PIONEERING CROSSBORDER PAYMENT ACCEPTANCE Groupe Crédit Mutuel CM11 is a leading French bank, with headquarters in Strasbourg. Crédit Mutuel CM11 has issued 14m cards via its our own card manufacturing subsidiaries. The group resides among the leading acquirers in Europe processing more than 3.2bn transactions a year. It manages more than 250,000 merchant affiliations and has approximately 200,000 POS devices deployed in the field with dedicated subsidiaries in charge of the logistical aspects, such as central buying services, installation and maintenance on site. Crédit Mutuel CM11 recognised that its merchant customers faced significant challenges setting up and maintaining a multicountry payments acceptance infrastructure. The incompatibility of proprietary domestic systems between countries, together with the variations in both regulation and approach to integration, were preventing merchants from harmonising their acceptance infrastructures across borders and resulting in unnecessary complexity and cost. Crédit Mutuel CM11 agreed that these hurdles could be overcome through the development of a new, harmonised cross-border approach to acceptance, one that utilised nexo’s globally standardised acceptance messaging protocols. In partnership with terminal manufacturer, Ingenico, Crédit Mutuel CM11 developed and trialled this new approach. Ingenico focused on the terminal and acceptance platform and Crédit Mutuel CM11 developed the elements needed for back-end acquiring integration. Crédit Mutuel CM11 has now successfully deployed nexo’s protocols across France, Belgium, Spain and Portugal.

In parallel it has also created a full nexo parameterisation service enabling industrial scale rollout of the nexo Terminal Management System (TMS) Protocol, the nexo Acquirer Protocol and the nexo FAST Specification (manifested in Crédit Mutuel CM11 own terminal application developed with Canadian cooperative bank, Desjardins). In June 2018, the service was launched to all members of the Crédit Mutuel CM11 group, which together represent over 4,500 branches, spread across 17 individual banks. Crédit Mutuel CM11 offering supports both mPOS and countertop terminals. It is also working with Ingenico to prepare a new generation of nexo-enabled terminals, which are planned for commercial rollout in the second half of 2018. Today, almost 1,000 nexo-enabled mPOS and 200 countertop terminals are deployed in the field and have generated excellent merchant feedback on the new user experience. When the final rollout is completed, between 2021 and 2023, Crédit Mutuel CM11 will have deployed more than 200,000 nexo-enabled terminals.
