editor’s note: After Party
It seems to me that for as long as we’ve been claiming, “UP JMA: We Lead,” we’ve also asserted, “UP JMA: We’re not just about parties.” This is something that comes up plansem af ter plansem, and the underlying insight that fuels many of the endeavors by the base committees. We’re not just about parties; we’re also about practicing corporate marketing, forming meaningful ties, giving back to the community. In spite of the unique cultures that arise from each of our five committees, there’s a commonality in our belief that JMA is much more than what people give it credit for. As a large and dynamic organization, we continually resist a specific kind of pushback. Yes, that party’s ours. No, that’s not all we do. “UP JMA: Don’t make us say it again.” We in JMA know that in this organization, people experience holistic development, regardless of committee or team. We’ve all had to do something we weren’t comfortable with in JMA, and this has caused us to grow in ways we didn’t expect. There’s no need for us to convince ourselves that we aren’t all about parties. Perhaps the reason this stereotype has persisted is because, atop the real work that we’ve all had to do, there is a party that keeps bumping. On this last issue by our Press team, I only have the deepest gratitude to my team, Mikka, Karinna, Anne, and Marian, who have all taught me so much, and to everyone in JMA for supporting our team despite our delay. Presenting the issue over 6 months in the making. Let the party begin.

Scene: KIDS UPCAT Tutorials
KIDS UPCAT TUTORIALS 05/06/2014 BY SEA REYES Last summer (May-June 2014), Team KIDS had UPCAT tutorials for around twenty-five fourth-year kids. We had three-hour sessions thrice a week, mainly Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, for around 5 weeks in the KIDS library (Barangay Loyola Heights). It was a quite tedious but fulfilling job. We made the students reviewers and a pre-test, as well as a post-test. We also provided snacks during their breaks. Together with some volunteers, we taught Science, Math, and English. As each session passed, you could see that the students were improving and becoming more active. This actually gave more motivation to teach even if we ourselves had to relearn a lot of things to be able to do this. It was nice to see that each of the students had a will or yearning to learn and listen. During our very last session, after the post-test, we gave them tips and tricks in answering the UPCAT, as well as an overview of the courses in the university. We also gave them test-taking kits which included a pencil, an eraser, and their forms, which we submitted and picked up for them. All in all this was a very worthwhile experience. For now, all we can do is wait and hope that when the list of the UPCAT passers come out, twenty-five familiar names will appear.

Scene: KIDS Movie Day Out
KIDS MOVIE DAY OUT 06/28/2014 BY JULIA PACLEB During the summer Team KIDS created a small event for the JMA kids to enjoy before school started. Cinemabata was held last June 28, 2014 in CMC Auditorium in UP Diliman from 1pm to 5pm. It was a double feature of 2 Kid Requested Movies Back to Back. The kids were picked up from Katipunan and brought to the venue by members from the team to provide hassle free transportation. Plenty of youngsters like kids from the lower grades were present as well as a couple of teenagers. Once they arrived in the auditorium the little kids were all excited to watch movies as they ran to the front row seats. The first movie that was shown was a Pinoy movie called My Little Bossings. The kids absolutely loved it and some of them even memorized the lines from the movie already. The next movie was Frozen which the kids were very fond of, especially the girls as they sang along to “Let It Go. Moreover, during the screening the kids were also given free food to enjoy while watching the movies. There were free popcorn, plenty of chips, and soda for everyone. All in all it was a pretty fun and relaxing day for the kids as well as some of the JMA members who attended.

Scene: Unleashed
UNLEASHED 07/05/2014 BY YSABEL CHUA It’s not everyday that you get to go to a free college party with the leading DJ’s in the industry, free drinks, and goodies from various sponsors. But this is exactly what the team behind Weedoo Entertainment pulled off with Unleashed 2 last July 5, 2014. Weedoo Entertainment is a company headed by the top media personalities in the Philippines such as Sam Gogna, Aaron Atayde, and Rico Blanco among many others. They had previously organized a highly successful college party in the Taft area for DLSU students entitled Unleashed, and wished to bring the same experience to UP and ADMU students. Thus, Unleashed 2 was created with the aim of organizing a completely free wet party for college students. Unleashed 2 was held in the Megatent Open Grounds from 4pm to 4am during the latter part of the summer. As this was a wet party,

water guns were provided to party-goers and fire trucks were also present, hosing down all attendees at random moments of the event. The event brought together all the best DJs in the metro such as DJs Ace Ramos, Mars Miranda, Marc Marasigan, and many more. Since this was the first time that Weedoo had organized a party of this scale, they requested for a partnership with the StratMark team of the UP JMA to help them promote their event to the college market. The StratMark team was also the main channel for the passes to the event as the team’s officers provided several meet-up points for these where they were overwhelmed with students interested in getting the passes. All in the all, the event was a huge success and gave the ultimate party experience all for free – something no event of this scale has been able to achieve before.
Scene: Freshie Tour
THE UPJMA FRESHIE TOUR 07/08-09/2014 BY Luis gan A good number of incoming freshmen have heard about UPJMA from their older friends or family in the university, and it’s no secret that joining the org is one thing they truly look forward to upon entering college. To meet this head on, we held the first ever UPJMA Freshie Tour, a joint project of Team Recruitment and MME Finance. The tour was intended to give freshies the chance to learn about their new campus and explore it with a unique spin - having a pair of fact tour guides and being chauffeured around in cars. Each stop of the tour gave freshies a glimpse into what regular life would be like as an Iskolar ng Bayan, with specific tasks which mirrored everyday encounters in the university - such as learning how to xerox in the Shopping Centre, and taking an Ikot Jeep from the Science Complex to AS. With over a hundred attendees, the freshie tour was a huge success and built friendships between members of the org and eager freshies, way before RnR Week. It was a lot of fun, both for the freshies and the members, and we hope to see this again next year!

Scene: KIDS Career Talk
UPCAT Career Talks: As the “graduation”/culminating event for our summer-long UPCAT tutorials, Team KIDS organized UPCAT Career Talks on July 12, Saturday, at Barangay Loyola Heights’ Barangay Hall, Katipunan, for our 20 tutees, and even some of our younger KIDS! These talks aimed to help the soon-to-be high school graduates decide what courses they should take once they enter college in the near future, and ultimately, decide the course of their working lives and their respective destinies. To further guide the participants, we invited four of our esteemed alumni from various fields to shed light on their courses and professions: Vinnie Reyes, BS IE cum laude graduate and former SPR chair, gave a background on engineering and all its different real-life applications; Audrey Hizon, BS BA magna cum laude graduate and former Fin VP, talked about how versatile a course
BA is and how she’s using her education in her current job in Colgate-Palmolive; Ariel Hernandez, BS Community Nutrition cum laude graduate and former Pub chair, swayed some of the kids to take a premed course and how excited he is to enter med school; lastly, Kat Roco, BS Economics magna cum laude graduate and former WEEK Chair, told her lifechanging story of choosing the low-in-pay, highin-fulfillment job as a Grade 3 public school teacher. At the end of the day, everyone involved went home with full stomachs (thanks to free Jollibee former Fin VP Soo Young Lee!), happy hearts, big smiles, and most importantly, clearer vision of the future.

Scene: Tokyo EDM Invasion
tokyo edm invasion 08/02/2014 BY luis cabatan Tokyo EDM Invasion held last August 2, 2014 in the SM SMX Convention Center wowed attendees with dazzling music by a handful of DJs including our own Ace Ramos and Deuce Manila and the headliner, Japan’s most popular DJ, DJ Dantz. Party-goers were given a sneak peek of the event itself during the promotional Tokyo EDM Launch Party, which was held in Imperial Ice Bar in Fort Bonifacio. The Launch Party gave a preview of the music of DJ Dantz and featured several special guests in the sumo wrestler, ninja and geishas. Not only was there great music to enjoy, but also great alcohol in their drink sponsor Southern Comfort. You didn’t have a ride? No problem because Grab Taxi provided free transportation to and from the event venue. Young and old came to the SMX Convention Center to witness the different style of music offered by the Japanese DJs, and they certainly did not disappoint as people partied through the night ‘til the early morning as they were treated to a medley of different music styles. All in all, Tokyo EDM Invasion gave the Filipino market a new and fresh party experience that left party-goers, young and old alike, wanting more and looking forward to Tokyo EDM Invasion 2 in 2015.

Scene: ADHOC Resurgence
ADHOC:RESURGENCE 08/23/2014 BY NICOLE EUGENIO ADHOC has long established itself in the college party scene. With almost 10,000 attendees every semester, there’s no doubt that it is and will remain the biggest and best college party in the Metro. In case you missed out on the night – or forgot about it while curing a hangover – here’s what went down last August 23, 2014. 1) Sky Full of Stars – ADHOC brought you the best and the biggest yet again with ADHOC newcomer DJ Inno Naguit, the big shot from down under DJ Jason Dewey, resident Republiq spinner DJ Martin Pulgar, and the Philippines’ best DJ Ace Ramos. And if anyone knows how to keep the hype going, it’s MC Pao – and he definitely kept the vibe all night long. Oh and that hour-long midnight reveal? Only in ADHOC.
2) Take Me Home – When it comes to ADHOC, expect a ton of people to still stay till the wee hours of the morning, not wanting the epic night to end. Over a thousand people were still in the halls even when all the lights were opened at 3AM! 3) Summer – ADHOC brought back the EDM song of the summer, along with the memories that come with it. It was a night of friends getting buzzed (the good kind), couples getting closer, and a sea of people dancing to the solid lineup of songs and mixes. It was a night of resurgence of the ADHOC supremacy and we’re sure all the attendees felt it that night. Electrifying beats, solid drinks, and amazing company all made for one epic party only UP JMA ADHOC can give you.

09/05/2014 BY luis gan The room was alive, it was electrified with the excitement of close to a hundred applicants just waiting for their first taste of UPJMA. OrSem for the first semester of AY 2014-2015 was not one to be forgotten. Populated by mostly freshmen, the UPJMA orientation seminar was an absolutely new experience for them. Aside from learning about our beloved org, its structure, functions, and members, we played games that drove home the point that this is wasn’t high school anymore. The event ended with the traditional Committee Videos which really brought UPJMA culture to life, each committee with their own unique spin and message. Kudos to all the applicants who took that first step in Room BA 308, and are now proud members of this extraordinary organization.

apphoc reloaded
As all pool parties, this one started slow and friendly, with members and apps casually sipping drinks and making small talk all around the pool’s edge. Soon enough though, the fun kicked in. If you haven’t been frisked for your cellphone or wallet before being shoved or thrown like a sack of rice into a pool full of JMAers, then you’re surely missing out on the spirit of the App Acquaintance.

At around 9 pm, members, applicants and alumni started to arrive, all of which had various costumes from famous characters to even an air dancer. Aside from the musical showcase, APOLLO also aimed
to promote and support its sole beneficiary, the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (FILSCAP). This government accredited organization was formed to protect the ownership rights of original Filipino literary and musical works. For the songwriting competition, former APO Hiking Society member Jim Paredes along with colleagues Nonoy Tan, Njel DeMesa, Noel Cabangon and Ito Rapadas awarded P10,000 in cash to artist Mic Manalo for being selected as the top performer of the competition. meme 11/15/2014 BY Sab Tordesillas and Erwin Mate It’s been three semesters since JMA last had its Member’s Marketing Event, and last November 15, TMS made sure to bring back one of its awaited events. Member’s Marketing Event, or MeME for short, is an inter-committee marketing event among the five committees of JMA. This semester, TMS, partnered with Tripda, a carpooling platform that connects drivers and commuters that will soon be making waves on our local shores. The committees then proceeded to present their IMCs to the panel of judged comprised of the different key people of Tripda. The CEO, Mr. Pedro Meduna, was also present and judged the event. Different approaches and ideas came about the presentations. It gave ideas to Tripda on how to incorporate Tripda’s ride sharing approach to the Philippine market. In the end, the judges did confess that the decision was not unanimous as they individually saw the potential of each IMC. The SPR team represented by Anton Garrido, Nathan Lim and Bene Mercurio coveted the P10,000.00 prize and the bragging rights for being the MeME Champions this semester.

favorite jma moment so far I have 2 answers. The conservative one and the medyo wild one. Laughs . First one would definitely have to be BACBACAN II last year right after we finished performing our Cheerdance routine. That was the best feeling ever! The weeks of practice and hard work super paid off and in the end we won Cheerdance and even became Overall Champs! The 2nd one would have to be the Finuman I held when I was Fin Chair in Edrich’s condo. It the wildest Finuman I have ever been to and let’s just keep it at that. (Shoutout to Jao Gamboa! Laughs .) If there was one thing about the org you can c h a n g e , w h at w o u l d i t b e ? Hmm... Well let’s be honest, I ran for President because there were a lot of things I wanted to change when it came to the systems, structure, policies, etc. Laughs . But if we’re talking about the less serious stuff like the experience, then there’s nothing I would want to change because JMA has given me the best experiences I’ve ever had. I actually just wish I could have more of JMA! I f yo u w e r e n ’ t i n yo u r c o m m i t t e e n o w, w h at o t h e r committee would you want to be in? If I didn’t go to Finance, I would probably want to be in Internals. I chose Finance because I entered the org wanting to do work. I came in wanting to learn
about event mounting and such but eventually, I just fell in love with JMA as a whole and now I just want to help make the org the fun and awesome place that it is! Did you ever imagine you would become execomm? Well I was always planning on running for Finance VP but not in a very serious I-have-to-have-itor-I’ll-die kind of way. Just in a really, I-thinkI’ll-get-there-eventually kind of way if that makes sense. Laughs . But I never imagined I’d be running for President. The choice of running for President over Finance VP was actually a very last minute snap decision sort of thing but I don’t regret a single day of it! Advice for the members of the org? Advice? Well my biggest advice is actually probably the simplest, just always be G. I only got to where I was today because I spent all my time in JMA and that only happened because I would say G first before even planning things out. Laughs . Just keep going to the tambayan and to events because trust me, the time you spend with these people is definitely worth it. D e s c r i b e j m a e r s u s i n g a f r u i t. W h y ? Starfruit, because JMAers are stars.

favorite jma moment so far My favorite JMA moment happened during Week 56’s Commwars—I think it was called the “Chicken Fight”? When I was a new mem, a lot of my batchmates were already talking about being in execomm together in the future, and I never thought of getting in their way. Come third year, however, I considered running. Never regretted my decision—it was worth it! Advice for the members of the org? Make JMA your home and you’ll look forward to coming to school everyday. More than just thinking of yourself, think of others, the younger ones whom you can impart your knowledge on and inspire to do better. Also, when in doubt, be selfless, be kind! D e s c r i b e y o u r c o m m i t t e e u s i n g a f r u i t. W h y ? Bananas. favorite jma moment so far ADHOC Limitless. Crazy overly stressful but so worthwhile. I f t h e r e wa s o n e t h i n g a b o u t t h e o r g yo u c a n c h a n g e , w h at w o u l d i t b e ? Change the tambayan. Make it more private, independent, spacier and with fast wifi access ! I f yo u w e r e n ’ t i n yo u r c o m m i t t e e n o w, w h at o t h e r c o m m i t t e e w o u l d yo u want to be in? Int, just because I really find MemDev now so interesting. It can make the simplest events seem so value-adding to its members. Did you ever imagine you would become execomm? Not. At. All. I have always been a workaholic jmaer and nothing more. I wasn’t so inclined with its other social events until I got in execomm. Solid pala rin HAHA I dont think any other position in this org can push someone’s patience, character and (well) resources (...) as much. as an execomm member. Advice for the members of the org? Advice? Practice a work-life balance lang in college. Chill lang but at the same time have a mindset. work beyond what is expected and you’ll receive more than you should. ( Laughs . True story yan..) D e s c r i b e y o u r c o m m i t t e e u s i n g a f r u i t. W h y ? My committee is an Apple-mango, just because theyre two of my favorite fruits and then boom its 2-in-1 pa. Laughs . Ok aside from that, apples and mangoes are two very unique fruits. One bland, crunchy, light and watery. Now the mango is sweet, soft, slimy and heavy to the stomach. What Im just trying to say is that in Fin, we may be considered “weird” but it’s only because we’re a mixed bred comm. Everyone complements each other with however odd or random personality each one has.

favorite jma moment so far My favorite JMA moment was when I experienced my first DSS in plansem. When we were finally able to accomplish it, I felt so amazing after all the ~suffering we as a directorate body went through. That moment was when I felt like we as JMA could do anything if we worked together! (Plus I felt like I was flying when I was lifted!!!) I f t h e r e wa s o n e t h i n g a b o u t t h e o r g yo u c a n c h a n g e , w h at would it be? Probably make JMA less barkada centric and less cliquish. (also, have members practice CLAYGO more in the tambayan...) I f yo u w e r e n ’ t i n yo u r c o m m i t t e e n o w, w h at o t h e r c o m m i t t e e would you want to be in? Others. Because there are only two committees in JMA, Internals and others. Did you ever imagine you would become execomm? Never! I only legit considered it a few weeks before filing for candidacy because I didn’t think my workload for my senior year could handle being execomm. But somehow, I can never seem to let go of JMA, and so I ran! No regrets! Advice for the members of the org? Enjoy and maximize your time in JMA because my college life would never have been so eventful, fun, and unforgettable if I had never been extra active! D e s c r i b e y o u r c o m m i t t e e u s i n g a f r u i t. W h y ? Berries! favorite jma moment so far My favorite JMA moment would be the most recent plansem because when you put JMAers together for 4 days and 3 nights, it’s bound to get pretty crazy. Can’t pick a specific moment because so many things happened that week, but it was definitely one for the books! I f t h e r e wa s o n e t h i n g a b o u t t h e o r g yo u c a n c h a n g e , w h at w o u l d i t b e ? Hmmm I guess it would sometimes be our inflexibility. Life is unfair and things won’t always go our way. Like what my prof said, you learn when you’re sad and hurt, not when you’re happy. So take these bumps as learning experiences and don’t take anything personally. I f yo u w e r e n ’ t i n yo u r c o m m i t t e e n o w, w h at o t h e r c o m m i t t e e w o u l d yo u wa n t t o b e i n ? Any! Each committee has their own thing so at least I’d be able to try them out! Did you ever imagine you would become execomm? I certainly dreamed about it as an app, but never really planned it out or anything. Running just sort of ~happened, but I’m glad I did because being in execomm has been one of the most challenging, but fulfilling positions of my life! Advice for the members of the org? In connection with my previous answer, just be open! Whether it’s opening up to members you just met in one event or to criticism for a project/output or even a position you didn’t even expect to get and even to random invites, JMA has so much to offer - new friends, new opportunities, new memories, etc - if you’ll just open yourself more. D e s c r i b e y o u r c o m m i t t e e u s i n g a f r u i t. W h y ? Hmmm Pub can be a dragon fruit, because we’re exotic/unique(and look pretty fierce), but still delicious!

favorite jma moment so far Ahh there are too many to choose from! But most of them are from Plansem. Just honestly loved living with JMAers for 4 days. Laughs . From waking up for breakfast to GOKS to chilling between sessions cards to finding out who’s hungover the next day, there’s never a dull moment with JMA. I f t h e r e wa s o n e t h i n g a b o u t t h e o r g yo u c a n c h a n g e , w h at w o u l d i t b e ? If there was one thing I could change it would be for all JMAers to feel at home in this org enough to come out of their shells and be themselves! I was really shy before. Like I was afraid to even comment in the FB group! But because of JMA I became part of a family that let me be myself! I was also featured in FBs Funniest Comments before in Lumine!! #successstory Laughs . Kidding aside, I hope all our members realize their full potential in JMA and just be themselves!! Funny, unya, weird hobbies and all I’m sure the org will welcome you with open arms. I f yo u w e r e n ’ t i n yo u r c o m m i t t e e n o w, w h at o t h e r c o m m i t t e e w o u l d yo u want to be in? If I weren’t in SPR, I’d be in PRS!!! The Public Relations and Socials committee. Laughs . Well maybe Pub cos our functions have been known to be similar sometimes! Did you ever imagine you would become execomm? It was one of my dreams back when I was a new mem! But I never really thought I would actually be execomm. To this day i’m still thankful I had I had the courage to still fight for it. I would never trade this experience for anything else in the world! Advice for the members of the org? YOLO from time to time! The times you’ll remember most about college are the ones you didn’t plan. Don’t take things so seriously and live in the moment!! D e s c r i b e y o u r c o m m i t t e e u s i n g a f r u i t. W h y ? We’d be pineapples!!! Tough outside, but really sweet deep inside. Laughs .
