A message from MediWales MediWales is the Life Science Network for Wales - supporting over 150 members from the medical technology, diagnostic and pharmaceutical industries, the NHS Health Boards and University departments. We run a very popular programme of events which focus on important strategic issues, including the UK procurement landscape, finance and funding, unmet clinical needs, international trade and regulation. Throughought the calendar year our special interest groups and themed events help support our members, encourage collaborations and promote the lively Welsh life science sector on both the national and international stage. Highlights in the MediWales calendar include our highly acclaimed UK HealthTech conference and our prestigious Annual Innovation Awards and Dinner which is the perfect get-together to celebrate the achievements of our companies and NHS colleagues. Although based in Wales, MediWales maintains a UK voice through strong Structure and relationships with the Association of BritishManagement Healthcare Industries, UK Trade and Investment, BioIndustry Association, Scottish Enterprise and the Knowledge Transfer Network as well as connections to Academic Advisory Health Science Networks Group nationwide. Our involvement with Medilink UK is cemented through the production of our national publication UK Lifescience Industry Magazine.

Our cluster is capable of delivering a full clinical trials service including formulation, analytical services, manufacturing, packaging distribution, and through Health Research Wales and the NHS, principal investigators and sites for multi-centre trials and MediWales’ clinical studies.

The second UK HealthTech Conference took place on 10th December in the Hilton, Cardiff. Delivered by MediWales the event attracted over 200 professionals, clinicians and industry specialists.

PHARMACEUTICALS

The six seminars produced a thorough look at the landscape of the UK’s medical technology, medical biotechnology, industrial biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. These were NICE’s Med Tech briefings, grants for SMEs, clinical access- which showcased the work of Health Research Wales, the Technology Strategy Board’s Biomedical Catalyst Fund, NHS procurement from a UK-wide perspective and the impact of the regulatory changes for medical devices.

Consistent collaboration Events provide a perfect platform to nurture interaction and collaboration. They allow for the promotion of the Welsh life science brand, widen the net of potential investors for our members and increase our sources of intelligence. MediWales delivers a full programme of events throughout the year.

This collaborative event with Wales Procurement Services outlined the changes that have been made to the way procurement is now operating as well as the procurement issues colleagues see when tenders are returned. Speakers at the event included Mark Roscrow, Assistant Director of Shared Services – Procurement Services and Andrew Smallwood – Head of Sourcing.

Other funds and programmes featured included i4i, EU Horizon 2020, the Wales Life Sciences Investment Fund managed by Arthurian, the NHS Health Technology Challenge Fund and the support available from Welsh Government.

MediWales’ NHS Procurement Event covered the new NHS procurement arrangements in Wales and included an overview of CCG and procurement in the English NHS.

In June, MediWales’ Finance & Funding event highlighted the latest sources of funding and finance for R&D and clinical trials for clinical collaborations and industry projects. The plenary sessions covered three key areas: wound healing, regenerative medicine and diagnostics, and the conference concluded with a panel discussion focusing on healthcare future trends which looked to the future of life science and health technology. Chaired by Andy Taylor of the Association of British Healthcare Industries the panel consisted of the days keynote speakers.

The day consisted of presentations, seminars and plenary sessions, with the programme including Professor Keith Harding CBE of the Wound Healing Research Unit, Dr Stephen Minger from GE Healthcare, Professor Julie Williams CBE, Chief Scientific Adviser for Wales and Richard de Souza of Martindale Pharma, as well as guest speaker Tom Pellereau of ‘Apprentice’ fame and Professor Val Edwards-Jones from ‘Embarrassing Bodies.’

THE MISSION

A truly collaborative event, MediWales partnered with the Association of British Healthcare Industries, Medilink UK, the HealthTech and Medicines Knowledge Transfer Network, Med-Tech Innovation, One Nucleus, UK Trade and Investment, the Life Science Exchange and the UK Lifescience Industry magazine to develop the conference, which was supported by Welsh Government, Health Research Wales and The Society of Biology.

Six groups in total focused on the following aspects of the Life Science sector:

The aim was to identify the key strengths as well as the barriers to wider collaboration and to focus upon maximising existing opportunities and ways in which greater collaboration can be achieved. Welsh Government- supporting international trade The Welsh Government Life Sciences international trade programme in 2012/13 was extremely successful providing support for over 100 delegates who represented over a fifth of all Welsh Life Sciences businesses. Medica 2013 was the largest ever Welsh Government delegation and 2014 looks set to match that.

UK Trade Support UK Trade and Investment also has a comprehensive programme of trade missions and trade shows. An extensive support for international trade activities is on offer for 2014/15 from Welsh Government, UKTI and ABHI. MediWales and other support organisations will circulate this information throughout the year. Different levels of subsidy or support are available depending on the event, the level of international trade experience which the company already has and the size and location of the company. For full details of both Welsh Government and UKTI supported missions please refer to our calendar at the rear of this directory.

Addressing areas of Unmet Clinical Need: A £4million Welsh Wound Innovation Centre of excellence in wound prevention and treatment has been established in Wales with the dual aim of delivering health and wealth benefits for people in Wales. The Welsh Wound Innovation Centre has a strong commercial focus on job creation and business as well as the delivery of a full range of clinical research and knowledge transfer services to the NHS and commercial customers.

THE SUMMARY

Selected Multi-Sector Trade Missions 2014/15:

Funding: The £100m Wales Life Sciences Investment Fund has made five investments to date. 1. In May 2013, Merthyr based Simbec Research Limited, one of the UK’s leading clinical research organisations, benefited from the first investment of the Fund. 2. In August 2013 Stem Cell Company ReNeuron became the second recipient of investment and as a result will be setting up its headquarters, research and development and manufacturing operations in Wales. 3. In March 2014, the Fund announced the third investment into AIM listed Verona Pharma a Pharmaceutical firm specialising in medicines to treat respiratory diseases, who will locate their headquarters to Wales. 4. The fourth investment announced in June 2014 and resulted in the acquisition of Orion Clinical Services, a late stage clinical development company, by Simbec Research to form Simbec-Orion Group Ltd. 5. In August 2014, the Fund invested in the Cardiff University spin-out Medaphor, a global provider of advanced ultrasound education and training for medical professionals.

MediWales uses the forum’s discussions to facilitate communication between academics, businesses and clinicians and advise Welsh Government, as well as to shape its own activities such as international relations, a busy events programme, publications and membership support.

Established in 2005 and based in Swansea, Haemair are developing the next generation Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) device. The initial focus is on post-operative support following cardio pulmonary surgery where it can both improve recovery rates and reduce hospital stays. Respiratory problems cost the NHS over £2,500 million/annum. The much larger cost to society ranges from lost time at work to long-term support in homes and care homes. In the longer term, ECMO promises to support patients with both acute and chronic respiratory problems. Competitive devices are associated with an increased risk of blood clot formation requiring a level of anticoagulation that significantly increases the risk of haemorrhage. This risk currently limits ECMO use to a small number of high-cost specialist centres. Haemair have demonstrated a device with the potential to reduce the risk of blood clots and hence greatly increase access to ECMO. Haemair has raised over £2million in private equity investment and has also benefitted from grants from the Welsh Government and from the NHS.

Wales has a significant ‘core competence’ in wound healing, including clinical and economic leadership. The most regionally and globally recognised part of this leadership is The Wound Healing Research Unit (WHRU) which was established in 1991 as the very first research unit to specialise in wound healing. Since then the WHRU has continued to lead the world in this clinical area. Based at the University of Cardiff (UHW site) and working closely with the University Hospital. The WHRU collaborates closely with a host of regional, national and international organisations, including companies, other researchers and health care providers. It has assisted in knowledge transfer projects which have brought many pioneering new products and technologies to the market, benefiting patients, globally with some research being in the image management, storage, manipulation/computation arena. With the use of the current WHRU as central expertise focus, the creation of the Welsh Wound Innovation Initiative is a model for a network of clinical centres of excellence in wound care both nationally and internationally. The current WHRU is the basis for the larger all Wales organisation growing into an expanded, not-for-profit business, based at the Welsh Wound Innovation Centre in Llantrisant. PETIC is a cyclotron-based production facility which provides radiopharmaceuticals for both diagnostic and research utilising both clinical and pre-clinical PETCT scanners. PETIC provides research opportunities across the Schools of Medicine, Bioscience, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Psychology and Optometry, in addition to All Wales Research Networks. The provision of the pre-clinical PET facility will be particularly attractive to the pharmaceutical industry. PETIC also offers a clinical scanning facility able to provide scans with FDG (Oncology, Neurology), F Choline (Prostate Cancer), NaF (Bone Scan), Florbetapir (Amyloid Plaque in Alzheimer’s) and F DOPA (Dopamine system and Parkinson’s Disease). PETIC has plans to develop a neurological research focus and introduce scanning of GABA receptors, Glutamate receptors, microglial activation and Tau protein. In addition, PETIC offers novel radioisotopes such as Zirconium 89 and Yttrium 86 with which PETIC is able to label and image monoclonal antibodies.

The Institute of Life Science (ILS) Swansea University’s College of Medicine is dedicated to delivering education, research and innovation in partnership with industry and the NHS.
