Our mission is ‘The advancement of human life science in Wales.’ Our focus is creating opportunities for our members. Founded in 1992, MediWales is the independent life science network for Wales, a not-for-profit limited company that creates business opportunities and partnerships for our members. We support 180 members from the medical technology, diagnostic and pharmaceutical industries, NHS health boards, university departments and professional services and suppliers. We create collaboration through our publications and a popular programme of events that focus on strategic issues for the life science industry, including regulatory updates, market access, finance and funding, clinical unmet needs, international trade and a range of special interest groups. Highlights in our calendar include the highly acclaimed UK HealthTech, our national conference, bringing key experts from around the UK and beyond to Cardiff for industry updates and networking opportunities, and the prestigious MediWales Annual Innovation Awards, an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of life science for Welsh industry and the NHS. OUR MISSION

Representing the sector, MediWales creates business opportunities and partnerships for our members, and works to facilitate access to global trade opportunities, improve access to vital clinical expertise, and engage with Government to align support with sector needs. We recognise and celebrate our members’ successes and promote the strengths of the sector within Wales and beyond. Market Intelligence & Key Statements Engaging daily with the life science community, we offer vast sector knowledge to our members. At the heart of the network and driven by our members’ interests and sector needs, our team provide one-to-one advice and support, and uses unparalleled market intelligence to connect industry, academic departments and the clinical community. Working with our national and international partners, MediWales can help to identify potential collaborations and research projects, and identify finance and funding opportunities for our members. To facilitate the sharing of knowledge and ideas, MediWales runs a series of seminars and events throughout the year; our biggest and most successful is the UK HealthTech conference, a reference event for the life science community and a valuable day of briefings and networking for the sector. Our annual conference will be held on 6th December 2016 in Cardiff. Over 300 delegates come together to understand critical strategic trends that will impact on their businesses. The event offers the latest insights from key opinion leaders as well as a unique opportunity to engage with industry, UK regulatory MHRA, the clinical community and funding bodies. Previously attracting delegates from over 20 countries and four continents, UK HealthTech is a highly

international event with global impact and excellent business development, market access and export opportunities.

Clinical Access We work very closely with the NHS and health boards. Many of the hospitals, health boards and clinical research departments are active members of MediWales. Access to clinical expertise is an essential part of the product development process for medical devices and pharmaceuticals, and supporting clinical innovation is a high priority for MediWales. We collaborate regularly with the NHS and academic research groups to facilitate industry access and provide advice on routes to market, the procurement landscape, innovation adoption initiatives and introductions to clinicians. MediWales has launched a series of clinical unmet needs events in collaboration with with Health and Care Research Wales and the Bill Mapleson Centre to help improve clinical innovation and patient care. Looking ahead, we aim to provide even more opportunities for industry and the clinical community to engage and collaborate, working to produce a change in the quantity, quality and speed of health and social care innovations across Wales. Our forthcoming event schedule will focus on clinical innovation, and our on-going collaboration with health boards in Wales will allow new partnerships to form and increase clinical access.

Communications High quality communication is essential for a network to work effectively. We create opportunities for our members to aid productivity and connectivity, and we do so through a range of activities. We deliver a busy events schedule, produce publications, and maintain a digital presence for our network, with 3,063 twitter followers and 46,319 website views, increasing every year. By constantly facilitating the exchange of information and offering promotional opportunities to our members, we provide a

variety of avenues to choose from to showcase their success and developments, and find new collaborative partners. Our popular events programme covers an array of life science areas, with topics including regulatory updates from the MHRA, procurement, finance and funding, clinical unmet needs, and NHS events. These events provide excellent networking and business development opportunities for our members, with engagement options spanning speaker slots, exhibition spaces, delegate attendance and the chance to host the events.

Recognition We work hard to recognise and showcase the achievements of our members. One of our most highly regarded pathways for recognition is our annual Innovation Awards competition. With ten awards across industry and NHS categories, the awards offer a platform to identify outstanding achievements in the life science sector in Wales.

Our 6 prestigious industry awards cover Innovation, Partnership with the NHS, Export Achievement, StartUp, Outstanding Achievement and Judges Award. Over the past seven years, MediWales has worked in collaboration with Health and Care Research Wales to recognise the NHS award categories and continue to celebrate success in NHS Collaboration with Industry, Efficiency through Technology – High Impact Award, Research Excellence in the NHS and NHS Judges Award.

Trade Support The MediWales team regularly attend international conferences and trade shows including Medica Trade Fair and the BIO International Conventions, offering guidance and support to our members in a global setting, meeting new potential partners, and representing the Welsh life science sector to drive more business to Wales and our members. As our global links strengthen, we can see wider international engagement reflected locally and we are proud to report that the UK HealthTech conference attracted representatives from over 20 countries across four continents last year. As a UKTI Trade Challenge Partner, MediWales can guide our members with export and trade advice, support companies that are starting to export, promote international trade opportunities and help facilitate international engagement. Our work on the European Cluster Medical Device Programme with the Council of European BioRegions (CEBR) has allowed MediWales to engage with 40 clusters from across Europe to build an online directory of medical device SMEs and promote it worldwide. Launched in June 2015 on the Lifescience Innovations Cluster Space website, the online directory is promoted to partners and investors worldwide, with a hotlist of high performing SMEs published every 6 months. During last year’s UK HealthTech conference, we launched Clinical Trials Services Wales, a special interest group formed to allow MediWales members in the delivery of clinical trials to meet the needs of their international customers from ‘molecule to market’, together representing a significant global force. Through this collaboration

the group are able to provide a more integrated and streamlined service, whilst demonstrating Wales’ unrivalled connectivity to the rest of the world.

Advocacy It is important for MediWales to represent the interest of our members, and lobbying Government is a key area of our work. In 2014, MediWales presented evidence to a Welsh Assembly inquiry into ‘Access to Medical Technologies in Wales’. The National Assembly for Wales, Health and Care Committee acknowledged the evidence and released recommendations on the inquiry. In response to the recommendations, MediWales organised a special interest group and produced a letter of key outputs from the group discussions, aiming for the widest possible sector engagement and to demonstrate an accurately detailed representation of members’ views. Recently, MediWales was included in ‘The UK’s Contribution to Health Globally’, a report on global health by the All-Party Parliamentary Group, and was cited alongside Government bodies and strategic partnerships supporting the UK life sciences sector. Further to that, MediWales had the opportunity to represent Welsh Industry at the BIA’s Parliament Day, which led to engagement with British MPs and the chance for MediWales to voice calls for continued political commitment to UK bioscience. We were delighted to collaborate with the Chief Scientific Officer for Wales on a recent project relating to the Precision Medicine Catapult (PMC), which allowed MediWales to arrange the PMC industry meeting and facilitate engagement between key stakeholders to contribute to the national delivery of the catapult.

MediWales Innovation Awards The Innovation Awards are a chance to celebrate the successes and advances of life science companies and the NHS in Wales. The competition is open for submissions until late October and the awards evening will take place at the National Museum of Wales. Each member organisation receives two free invitations to attend, with the option to buy a table of 10. As our most prestigious evening of the year, the awards are highly popular and dinner spaces fill up quickly, so advanced registration is essential.

UK Lifescience Industry is our UK publication, with a distribution of 40,000. The magazine offers in-depth features regarding sector-wide concerns, specialist columns from sector experts, case studies highlighting industry innovation, digests covering news and developments throughout the UK, and a perfect platform for advertising. Sent out across the UK and at international events, UK Lifescience Industry is the most widely distributed life science publication in the UK.

MediWales LifeScience Academy, offers a range of courses and training to develop and grow members’ businesses. To facilitate this process, MediWales has enrolled the help of a number of expert consultants to deliver a training programme. Ranging from sector specific and specialist training to business support, marketing and management, the series of courses offer a variety of niche and broad development areas. Our expert consultants can also offer bespoke courses to provide tailor-made training to suit customer requirements.

UK HealthTech The UK HealthTech conference is a valuable day of briefings and networking for those within the life science and health technology communities, and research clinicians from the NHS. Over 250 delegates come together to understand critical strategic trends that will impact on their businesses. The event offers the latest insights from key opinion leaders and the unique opportunity to engage with industry colleagues to network and develop your business relationships. Key themes include precision medicine and patient-centred healthcare, the challenges of innovation and regulation, accelerated access for new medicines and medical devices, corporate finance for life science and fundraising for R&D and clinical trials.

Medical Student Placement Programme This year, we are offering our members the opportunity to host medical students to work on exciting projects with clinical relevance. MediWales have teamed up with a number of Welsh universities to facilitate student placement schemes. We are looking for MediWales members from industry to host medical students, engineering students and students from other areas relating to the sector in their third year of study. Becoming a MediWales member With a record number of new MediWales members so far this year, we are delighted to see our membership growing. Our network is feeling stronger than ever, and we are helping to build new partnerships and provide new opportunities each day for our members. Each member is featured online and in our Annual Review & Directory. Our newest publication, LifeStories, is a case study magazine celebrating MediWales members, their recent developments, successes and collaborations. We welcome organisations from the life science sector in Wales, and organisations hoping to engage with Welsh health technology organisations, to join our network and become a MediWales member using our online registration form at www.mediwales.com/ membership-benefits/become-member.

Special Interest Groups When engaging with our members, we discovered a crossover of concerns and opinions. This led us to launch a number of specific special interest groups, to bring together individuals with a shared interest in advancing a particular area of life science in Wales. We arranged meetings to establish collaborative groups that can work together, establish solutions within a certain field, and move forward new ideas in the areas of: Clinical Trials Services Wales, Medical Technology & Diagnostics and Natural Compounds.

BioPharma Special Interest Group The BioPharma Special Interest Group was formed to allow MediWales members involved in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals to collaboration and together represent a global force to meet the needs of their international customers from ‘molecule to market’.

The Special Interest Group represents an integrated and streamlined service, saving customers time and money whilst delivering the highest quality of service through a network of trusted partners. The group’s aim is to extend each organisation’s visibility on the world stage through promotion at international events.

Medical Technology & Diagnostics A key motivation for MediWales is to represent the interest of our members. We set up the Medical Technology & Diagnostics Special Interest Group to explore factors affecting medical technology and diagnostics companies in Wales. We aim for the widest possible sector engagement to demonstrate an accurately detailed representation of members’ views to Government. The group meets to discuss areas such as access to medical technologies in Wales, clinical innovation, NHS staff training, regulatory and procurement updates and credentialing.

Natural Compounds MediWales has launched the Natural Compounds Special Interest Group alongside its collaborative partners. The forum will be used to discuss and support the development and commercialisation of natural products for health, wellbeing and disease management. The focus of this group is on taking natural compounds that have already been identified and for which research data already exists, to market. The group will share advice on developing routes to market, managing regulatory requirements, achieving relevant product certifications and running clinical trials.

The Life Science Advisory Forum The Life Science Advisory Forum is a panel of experts and senior personnel within the academic, business and clinical life science communities in Wales, this group advises MediWales on pressing issues within the sector. Bringing great life sciences ideas to life Just a few hundred yards from Cardiff University's School of Medicine is a red brick building. Inside is a cluster of high tech labs and offices, home to 26 busy and growing companies. They’re each developing cutting edge life sciences products and services. This is where academia meets business. Cardiff Medicentre is one of Wales’s most successful business incubators for biotech and medtech startups. It’s been based on the Heath Park campus in the grounds of the University of Wales Hospital since 1992 when it was established as a joint venture between Cardiff City Council, Cardiff University, Welsh Government and Cardiff & Vale University Health Board. The centre was the first life science incubator of its kind in Wales and now provides 32 units of high quality office and lab space accommodation ranging from 284 sq ft to 1,045 sq ft. Low-cost desk leasing facilities encourage entrepreneurs to enter the Cardiff Medicentre community while writing business plans and raising finance, so every stage of start-up is catered for. Cardiff Medicentre tenants include Alesi Surgical Ltd, MedaPhor, Diurnal, WIMAT, and Cansford Laboratories. Their products and services areground-breaking, and many are already well-established in global markets including Europe, North America, Japan and Brazil. Recent successes have included: ● a string of awards for Alesi and its Ultravision product which clears smoke created during laparascopic surgery. Among these was the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons’ Cutlers Surgical Prize for the best surgical invention ● MedaPhor’s listing on the Alternative Investment Market, and the launch of its US subsidiary to drive exports of its ultrasound education and training tools in North America.

Those are just some of the success stories. Past tenants have gone on to achieve great things, too. A number have graduated from the centre through expansion and acquisition, including the laboratory testing company Tricho-Tech which was acquired for £11.25m and the healthcare consultancy business Cardiff Research Consortium which was purchased by outsourcing giant Capita Group plc for £11.6m. Cardiff Medicentre is where it all begins. Aside from low-cost rent and lab and desk leasing facilities, the centre offers a range of business support mechanisms for budding medical entrepreneurs. This includes access to professional business advisors and to the Welsh Government's Life Sciences sector team, Cardiff City Council’s Economic Development Unit and Cardiff University. Tenants are supported in every aspect of their growing business, from initial idea through to launch and active trading. Those running Cardiff Medicentre have one simple aim: to provide the space and assistance new biotech and medtech businesses need to get up and running, grow and to thrive.

In the longer term, ECMO promises to support patients with both acute and chronic respiratory problems. Competitive devices are associated with an increased risk of blood clot formation requiring a level of anticoagulation that significantly increases the risk of haemorrhage. This risk currently limits ECMO use to a small number of highcost specialist centres. Haemair have demonstrated a device with the potential to reduce the risk of blood clots and hence greatly increase access to ECMO. Established as a not-for-profit organization and partnering with the NHS, universities and industry WWIC was formally launched in September 2014 to co-ordinate and improve the prevention and treatment of wounds throughout Wales. Wounds have been estimated to cost almost 6% of the annual budget of NHS Wales and the introduction of effective and efficient interventions to better prevent or heal faster has the potential to realise large savings for the NHS while improving the quality of care experienced by patients. WWIC also contributes to the Welsh economy by bringing research and commercial activity in wound healing into Wales.

It aims to deliver a curriculum containing research, IP generation, knowledge transfer and innovation and to embed these skills into practice to make a direct and meaningful impact on people and patients. It is home to a Graduate Entry Medicine programme as well as a growing range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The research and innovation arm of the Medical School is housed in the Institute of Life Science (ILS), which is Wales’ premier purpose-built medical research and business incubation facility. This is a partnership between Swansea University, Welsh Government, the NHS and industry. The vision for the ILS is to advance medical science through multi- and interdisciplinary research and innovation for the benefit of human health and the economy. Research is grouped into four broad themes – biomarker and gene discovery; microbes and immunity; medical devices; and patient and population health and informatics – all of which are supported by a collection of platforms including informatics, data science, molecular medicine, nanohealth and a joint clinical research facility with the NHS. Cross cutting these areas are clinical interfaces due to the partnership with the NHS – in particular Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University (ABMU) and Hywel Dda Health Boards. There are a number of unique facilities and projects housed at the ILS, these include; the EPSRC UK National Mass Spectrometry Facility, MRC funded Cloud Infrastructure for Microbial Bioinformatics (CLIMB) centre, and the Centre for NanoHealth. The ILS is also home to the Joint Clinical Research Facility (JCRF), which boasts a bedded clinical trials unit and an imaging suite fitted with CT and MRI scanners. The newest research council facility is the Data Science Building which stands adjacent to ILS2. Home to the Farr Institute for Health Informatics; the Centre for Improving Population Health through E-Health Research (CIPHER) and the Centre for Administrative Data Research and Evaluation (CADRE), this world-class centre of excellence in administrative and e-health research, innovation, training and development uses powerful, robust state-of-the-art data linkage and data access facilities.

We foresee that further integration of biomedical engineering industries with our degree schemes will train better-equipped engineers for these industries. It set up its Innovation Centre in conjunction with University of Wales, Trinity Saint David in Swansea to provide a research and design service to help children, parents and carers find specialist equipment and adaptations that are not already available to buy. The Innovation Centre is made up of a small team of engineers and designers who are able to respond to requests to adapt or design and build specialist equipment. Many of the products serve as daily living aids. We have expertise in the areas of electronics, design and engineering. We also work with a range of industry partners and other charities in the development of products.
