Internet Outraged by Facebook’s Creepy Mood Experiment

Internet users have reacted angrily to news that Facebook researchers manipulated the content some users were shown to guage their emotional response. For whole of 1 week, in early 2012, Facebook changed the content mix in the News Feeds of almost 690,000 users. Some people were shown on a higher number of positive posts, while others shown negative posts. Results of the experiment, conducted by Cornell’s researchers, University of California, San Francisco and Facebook, were published this month in the academic journal Proceedings of National Academy of Science. There were evidence shown that after all the posts regardless of negative or positive posts, what followed after was that people are more inclined to follow the pattern of the emotions of the next posts being posted on FB. Facebook had successfully changed the emotional state of its users. Facebook’s term of service gives the company permission to conduct this kind of research but many users responded with anger after knowing of this social experiment. Facebook uses an algorithm to determine the number of 1,500 available posts will show up in a user’s News Feed. Company often changes this program to modify the mix of news, personal stories and advertisements seen by users.

What’s Brewing Up For Tech World? Top 5 Mobile Technology Trends in 2014 Technological convergence is the keyword of the year as we hurtle towards the Internet of Things. Big changes are on the way — Dippak Khurana, CEO and co-founder of Indian mobile advertising exchange, Vserv.mobi says the fields of telecommunications, media and technology are set to meld into a single ecosystem as consumer lifestyle and mobile-centric innovation converge. We asked him to analyse the top trends in mobile technology this year. Here are his top five. I. Tele-communicate-in “Emerging markets, as the growth driver connecting the next billion mobile internet users, will continue to dominate the business agenda of the mobile sector. To crack this emerging markets code, telcos will need to re-engineer their strategy on innovating the mobile data paradigm and move away from traditional and commoditised revenue generators – SMS and voice services. Telcos of the new mobile world have to find the right ingredients of low cost devices, synergistic partnerships and a granular mobile data strategy to create a winning recipe. From a devices standpoint, the sub$25 smart phones can be touted as the sweet spot in enabling this change, as validated by Mozilla’s showcase of its $25 range of phones. Facebook’s partnership with Airtel in Rwanda to offer subsidised data services, as well as the partnership in the Philippines with Smart to allow subscribers free or discounted access to Facebook messaging, is yet another example of disruptive partnership that the industry will need to adopt. The telecom ecosystem in emerging markets therefore is interlocking and cooperating to achieve the goal and gear up for the big battle.”

II. Internet of Things (IoT) innovation continues “IDC predicts that the installed base of the IoT will be approximately 212 billion connected devices globally by the end of 2020. While almost all industries are looking for that “intelligent” system; car manufacturers are flag bearers of the IoT brigade. Earlier this year, Google announced the Open Auto Alliance, a partnership with Audi, GM, Honda and Hyundai to bring Android to the dashboard of these car manufacturers. At the same time, Ford’s Sync, a platform developed by Ford and Microsoft provides real time information on traffic directions among other things. The ability to be able to integrate people and the systems to interact with each other can offer unparalleled opportunities for brands and advertisers to redefine consumer engagement in a context-specific environment. Turning this concept into a practical reality will take a few years, but the foundation has been set. It’s a matter of time that the trend moves into top gear!” III. The devices are back “Consumer preferences are evolving and they are demanding impeccable and unique user experience, this has been driving device manufacturers to create more powerful products that deliver superior, integrated experiences. As user experience becomes key, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are now focusing on going beyond the user interface to designing the emotional connection. Back in the day, the device itself was the dominating factor to win consumers, then the focus moved to OS, now we are back to the device game. Samsung moved away from Android, by powering their wearable products with Tizen, a shift seen by many as an opportunity to make the device and then decide the OS, rather than the other way around.Nokia’s first foray in Android was to give customers a feel about Nokia’s form factor and experience a ‘new’ Nokia. Blackberry allowing BlackBerry 10 phones to install and run Android apps. While these various developments could be seen as “just trying different strategies to capture market share”, the deeper implication is that they allow OEMs to dictate and create meaningful differentiation through their products.”

IV. Weathering the Over-The-Top (OTT) appstorm “Telcos are challenged by the huge influx of over-the-top (OTT) players such as WhatsApp,Viber and others that are making a serious dent in their SMS revenue. During MWC in 2014, SingTel’s CEO said ‘investments in improving networks will be reduced unless they are given a right to charge OTT players for tapping their networks.’ There are examples of companies that are turning this challenge into an opportunity with a joint ‘Telco-OTT strategy’ such as Orange’s ‘Libon‘ app. Created by Orange’s innovation subsidiary, Orange Vallée, Libon helps users manage their communications in a single interface, including free HD calls and messaging between users, low-cost off-net calling, visual voicemail and cloud storage. Libon is available OTT in more than 100 countries, but Orange is also promoting it via a collaborative model in which it offers the service to its mobile customers in partnership with its national operations. Such successes imply that telcos and OTT players cannot be on a path of collision but will need to work in tandem to align to today’s market realities.” V. Advertising 3.0 “Advertising is all about understanding the pulse of customers. And the rapid evolution of the telecom ecosystem comprising of OEMs, telecom providers and connected devices will kick this up a notch. Connected mobile devices will discover game-changing possibilities for the next wave of advertising and act as a medium to connect marketers to loyal consumers with personalised, interactive, seamless and immersive brand experiences. This signifies endless possibilities for mobile advertising as advertisers will be able to tailor their ads for each device aligned to its respective distinctive features. With this, consumers living in today’s connected and cross device world will compel advertisers to re-imagine the purview of brand engagement, user-targeting and advertising at large.”
