No. 24 Texas Tech hosts its first Big 12 midweek doubleheader of the season Wednesday evening as the 17th-ranked Baylor Bears head to Lubbock for a 5 p.m. first pitch at Rocky Johnson Field. LIVE STREAMING Texas Tech will stream every home game free of charge this season at RaiderVision All-Access on the school’s official website, www.texastech.com. ON DECK The Red Raiders will get a few days off before traveling to Ames, Iowa for their first true road contest of the season. Tech faces Iowa State in a two-game series that begins at 2 p.m. Saturday and concludes with an 11 a.m. game Sunday morning. THE SERIES Despite winning four of the last seven meetings in the series, Texas Tech trails Baylor, 26-9, all-time as the Red Raiders are also only 3-12 against the Bears in Lubbock. The two teams split the series last year in Waco.

ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field opened in 2001, giving Texas Tech one of the newest softball facilities in the country. In the 10 years since its opening, the complex has gone through several changes, including the addition of the team facility down the left field line which opened in 2010, making “The Rock” one of the finest facilities in the country. DIRECTIONS TO ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field is located on 10th Street near University Medical Center (UMC). The softball complex is adjacent to the McLeod Tennis Center and can be best reached via Texas Tech Parkway. FROM THE AIRPORT: Take I-27 South from Regis Street and exit west on the Marsha Sharp Freeway. Take the Texas Tech Parkway exit and turn north (right) for a quarter of a mile until you reach the first stop light (10th Street). Turn back east (right) and Rocky Johnson Field will be on the right side.

Baylor enters Wednesday’s doubleheader coming off a weekend split with No. 12 Missouri in Waco as the Bears won the opening game, 3-2, before balling in the series finale, 6-0. Behind the arm of sophomore Whitney Canion, Baylor boasts victories over nationally-ranked UCLA and Fresno State along with a series win over Arizona. Canion has pitched over half of Baylor’s total innings as the left-hander is 15-4 on the year with a 0.87 earned-run average. The Bears, who are hitting .296 as a team, are led at the plate by Dani Leal’s .395 average and 10 home runs. GENTSCH, WARD FACE HOMETOWN TEAM Growing up near Waco, Wednesday’s doubleheader might have a little more meaning for Holley Gentsch and Kermitria Ward, who both played their high school days at Midway High School. Gentsch will be facing Baylor for the third time in her career, while this will be Ward’s first appearance againt the Bears. PITCHING DOMINATED LAST YEAR’S SERIES To say there weren’t many runs in last season’s series might be an understatement. Baylor’s Courtney Repka threw a six-hit shutout in the series opener as the Bears prevailed in extra innings, 1-0. Ashley Brokeshoulder turned the weekend around for Tech two days later, tossing a five-hit shutout while Mikey Kenney drove in the game’s only run in the first inning as Tech scored the 1-0 victory. SARTINI PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Texas Tech head coach promoted assistant coach Aly Sartini to the title of associate head coach this week. Sartini, in her second year at Tech, directs the Tech pitching staff and outfielders, while also assisting in the program’s recruiting efforts as well as academic and travel matters. RED RAIDERS LOOK TO REBOUND AGAINST OU Missouri’s Chelsea Thomas stifled the Tech offense for most of the two teams’ series last weekend, holdwww.texastech.com

ing the Red Raiders to only two runs off five hits. Tech had not been held to under two runs in a game all season and its two hits in the series finale set a new season low. OFFENSE FOUND SUCCESS A YEAR AGO The Red Raiders were able to plate more than enough runners last year against the Sooners, scoring seven runs in each game of a midweek doubleheader on April 15. Tech lost the first game, 9-7, before rebounding to win in extra innings, 7-6, in the finale. The Sooners shut down the Red Raiders in the Big 12 quarterfinal game, however, as Keilani Rickets threw a three-hit shutout en route to a 2-0 victory. FANS PACK THE ROCK Texas Tech’s 1,248 fans in attendance during the series finale against Missouri easily broke the school record of 853 set on March 28 last year against Iowa State. Three of the five largest crowds in school history have come in Shanon Hays’ two-year tenure and fans are encouraged to once again pack Rocky Johnson Field again this weekend against Oklahoma. TECH AGAINST TOP 25 TEAMS UNDER HAYS The Red Raiders have won more than a handful of games against top 25 opponents under secondyear head coach Shanon Hays. Tech is 8-13 against ranked teams under Hays, including 2-2 so far this season. Six out of the next eight conference series to close the season will be against opponents currently ranked in the top 25. RED RAIDERS BOAST MOST WINS IN THE NATION Despite being swept by Missouri last weekend, Texas Tech still has the most wins (35) among any Division-I team in the country as the Red Raiders are one of only five teams with at least 30 wins this season, joining Alabama (33-2), Arizona State (33-2), Florida (30-4), and Michigan (31-2).

REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK Through only 38 games, the 2011 Texas Tech squad has already laid its mark in the school’s record book, setting the single-season records for runs, RBIs, home runs, and games ended via run rule. The Red Raiders have also had two no-hitters this season from freshmen Kermitria Ward and Brittany Talley, while several individuals such as Logan Hall, Cydney Allen, and Sandy James have either broken or matched single-game records already in place. TOUGH STRETCH TO START CONFERENCE PLAY Prior to the season, both Oklahoma and Missouri were picked to finish first and second in the Big 12, respectively. Texas Tech, who was picked to finish seventh, will host both schools to open Big 12 play as the Red Raiders will get an early test to see where it stands in the Big 12 ranks. Not to make things easier, the Red Raiders will then face No. 15 Baylor in a midweek doubleheader on April 6 as Tech will open league play with three-straight series against ranked opponents. RED RAIDERS BOAST BIG 12’s TOP OFFENSE Texas Tech enters this week’s action with the top offense in the Big 12 Conference as the Red Raiders have posted a .374 average so far. The next highest average in the conference is .354 from Texas. KENNEY LEADS BIG 12 IN DOUBLES After starting the year with nine doubles in Texas Tech’s first 16 games, Mikey Kenney currently leads the Big 12 in the category as the sophomore outfielder has recorded 15 doubles on the season, two more than the conference’s next highest total. BLEDSOE ENDS CAREER HIGH HITTING STREAK Emily Bledsoe snapped her career-long 13 game hitting streak in Tech’s 5-1 victory over Jacksonville. The junior infielder went 0-for-1 at the plate but reached base three times off two walks and a hit by pitch. RED RAIDERS FACE TOUGH PITCHING IN FLORIDA Heading into the USF The Game Tournament in Florida, one thing head coach Shanon Hays thought might benefit Tech down the road was the improved pitching the Red Raiders would see. Tech for the most part saw each school’s top pitcher, including Jacksonville’s Sarah Sigrest, who one-hit Big 12 foe Texas A&M the day before facing Tech. PATIENCE HELPS TECH SET SCHOOL RECORD In Tech’s first game in Clearwater, Fla., the Red Raiders took advantage of 18 Colorado State walks at the plate, shattering the school record of 11 that was previously set in 2007 against Oklahoma State. TECH KEEPS EARNING WEEKLY ACCOLADES Sandy James became the third-consecutive Texas Tech player to be named the Big 12 Player of the Week last week as the sophomore joined Logan Hall and Cydney Allen as weekly accolade honorees. Prior to this season, only four Tech players had earned Player of the Week honors. James hit .667 during the Masked Rider Invitational with six home runs to go along with 20 RBIs, pacing Tech to a doubleheader sweep of New Mexico and a 7-1 week. WARD’S NO-HITTER TIES SCHOOL RECORD Kermitria Ward tossed her first career no-hitter

against Alcorn State on March 13, becoming just the fifth Tech pitcher to ever record the feat. Ward joins freshman teammate Brittany Talley in the no-hit club as the duo tied the school record set in 1999 for most no-hitters in a single season. The freshman was making her first collegiate start against the Braves after coming out of the bullpen for most of the year. DENNIS RELIABLE IN THE CIRCLE During Tech’s 25-game homestand, Kelsey Dennis has found her groove in the circle. The junior allowed only eight earned runs in 40.2 innings of work, while posting a team-high four shutouts during that stretch, including three one-hitters. ONE OF THE FINAL UNBEATENS When Texas Tech’s undefeated streak came to an end on March 11, the Red Raiders were one of only five teams still without a loss. Washington earned the title of the nation’s final undefeated squad before eventually falling to Texas on March 17. NEW MEXICO PROVES TO BE TOUGH TEST Tech’s doubleheader against New Mexico ended up being two of Tech’s closest games this season as the Red Raiders took game one, 9-6, before closing the day with a 5-3 win. Tech had previously played only one game (St. John’s on Feb. 25) since the seasonopening Arizona State Kajikawa Tournament that was decided by three runs or less. JAMES LEAVES HER MARK AGAINST LOBOS Sandy James provided a huge lift to the Tech offense against New Mexico, belting two home runs in the doubleheader while adding eight RBIs. Her four RBIs in each game set a new season high as the sophomore accounted for eight of Tech’s 14 total runs. PITCHING STAFF SETS SCHOOL RECORDS The Texas Tech pitching staff set several school records during the Red Raider Classic, including most shutouts in a row (5), consecutive hitless innings (11.2), and consecutive shutout innings (27.1). Brittany Talley leads the Red Raiders in wins so far with eight on the year. HALL NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK After hitting .583 during the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic, junior infielder Logan Hall was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on March 1. In addition to her 7-for-12 weekend at the plate, Hall added three home runs, two of which were grand slams, and 16 total RBIs to help keep Tech undefeated. AVERAGES SOURING OVER .400 Texas Tech currently has four regular position players with a batting average at .400 or higher. Cydney Allen leads all players with a .460 average followed by Logan Hall, Raven Richardson, and Emily Bledsoe. Mikey Kenney is slightly under the group with a .387 average. The junior currently has 17 RBIs this year, matching her total from the previous two seasons.

JEANNINE MCHANEY MEMORIAL CLASSIC Texas Tech honored the university’s long-considered founder of women’s athletics with the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Red Raiders faced St. John’s, Northern Illinois, and Wichita State in the three-day event that ran Feb. 25-27 at Rocky Johnson Field. McHaney was the first athletics director when the women’s athletics department was formed in 1975 and remained a top member of the athletics department for the next two decades. She passed away in 1994.

TALLEY TALLIES UP THE RESULTS For being only a freshman, Brittany Talley had a lot of responsibility on her left arm in Arizona. The Little Elm, Texas native got the start against both No. 16 BYU and No. 12 Cal, picking up the win against the Golden Bears. Talley was an out away from a complete game win over BYU before the Cougars responded with a game-tying two-run home run. After going 5.1 innings against Cal, Talley returned to the circle later in the night to close the Indiana game, going the final 2.2 innings to earn the save.

HALL BOOSTS MIDDLE OF THE ORDER To say Logan Hall had a successful Texas Tech Invitational might be an understatement. The junior infielder hit .611 at the plate (11-for-18) with 11 RBIs, three of which came off a three-run home run against Utah Valley in the weekend finale. Hall leads Tech with 40 RBIs on the year and has recorded a .500 average, the highest on the team.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT DREWRY With all the individual successes of the Kajikawa Classic, the play of Stephanie Drewry should not be forgotten. The junior outfielder went 2-for-3 at the plate against Appalachian State and drove in a career-high five RBIs while posting a .467 average.

SPEAKING OF HALL... Logan Hall began the Texas Tech Invitational with a memorable performance against Utah Valley in the early game on Friday. The junior smashed two triples in the game, tying Denise Jackson for the school record that had not been matched since the 1997 season against New Mexico. HOME RUN WATCH BEGINS FOR KENNEY Mikey Kenney’s two home run day to close the Texas Tech Invitational moved the sophomore into a tie for fourth on the school’s career homer chart. She is now tied with Jennifer Bowers (2005-08) with 17 career dingers and is three from tying Jennifer Corking (2005-08) for third all-time. After matching the single-season record with 15 home runs as a freshman, it’s not a stretch to think Kenney could some day match Kim Martinez’ school record of 27. RED RAIDERS END LONG HOMESTAND The Red Raiders ended a 25-game homestand on March 13 that began with the Texas Tech Invitational on Feb. 18. Tech played at home for nearly a month, hosting four separate tournaments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before traveling to Florida for the USF The Game Tournament. ALLEN FACES FORMER SCHOOL Junior catcher Cydney Allen saw a few familiar faces in the opposite dugout during Tech’s season-opener against BYU. Allen appeared in 11 games for the Cougars as a freshman in 2009 before transferring to Salt Lake Community College in 2010. She finished 3-for-5 in the game, while also scoring a run. HALL RETURNS TO HOME STATE Logan Hall returned to her home state for the Kajikawa Classic. Hall, a native of Tucson, Ariz., played one season at Pima Community College before transferring to Tech for the 2010 season where she was an All-Big 12 second team selection. HOME SWEET HOME The Red Raiders will play 35 of their 54 games at Rocky Johnson Field this season, beginning with the Texas Tech Invitational, Feb. 18-20. Tech will host four-straight weekends of round robin tournaments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before completing non-conference play in Florida for the UCF Tournament. The Red Raiders begin Big 12 play with their first five conference games at home as Missouri, Oklahoma, and Baylor all travel to Lubbock. Tech will also have home series against Kansas and in-state rival Texas. Tech’s 35 home games is the most in school history. EIGHT STARTERS RETURN FROM LAST YEAR With eight starters returning in the field from the 2010 squad that advanced to the NCAA Stanford Regional, the Red Raiders should have a wealth of experience to rely on when Big 12 play begins. Tech lost Leah Legler, Danielle Matthews, and pitcher Ashly Jacobs from last season’s 38-18 team. NO SENIORS, NO PROBLEM The Red Raiders will have one noticeable difference in their roster than every other school in the Big 12 - Tech has no seniors on its 2011 roster. Instead, second-year head coach Shanon Hays will rely on an experienced group of 11 juniors. HAYS ADDS SIX NEWCOMERS Even with most of his roster from a year ago back, Tech head coach Shanon Hays added seven newcomers this spring, most notably junior college transfers Cydney Allen and Kelsey Dennis and freshman Kermitria Ward. Freshmen Brittany Talley and Taylor Powell along with sophomore transfer Sandy James will add to the list of newcomers. FROM ACROSS THE NATION Nearly half of Texas Tech’s 21 players are originally from a state other than Texas as only 11 players hail from the Lone Star State. All together eight states are represented on this year’s roster, including Alabama Arizona, California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Washington.

Ashley Brokeshoulder and Karli Merlich both return to the circle as well, giving Tech five pitchers for the season. Ward will also split time as an outfielder and will occasionally pinch run. RYBA TO REDSHIRT 2011 SEASON Despite appearing on Tech’s roster, junior infielder Melissa Ryba will redshirt the 2011 season in order to comply with NCAA transfer rules. Ryba spent the past two seasons at Northern Colorado. TECH SIGNS FIVE IN FALL PERIOD Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays announced the signing of five future student-athletes to national letters of intent this fall as Hannah Bell, Cara Custer, Chandler Moore, Adriana Perez and Katelyn Williams will all join the program for the 2012 season.

No stranger to building programs, Shanon Hays took over as head coach of the Texas Tech softball team in 2010 and immediately led the Red Raiders back to the NCAA postseason in only his first season, laying the groundwork for a program on the rise. The fifth head coach since the resurrection of the program in 1996, Hays helped guide the Red Raiders to a 23-win improvement last year from the 2009 season, while eventually advancing all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Stanford Regional. Under Hays, all facets of the game improved as the Tech hitters snapped the school record for runs, slugging percentage, and home runs in a season, while the pitching staff boasted its lowest earned-run average since 2001 and the Tech defense committed its fewest errors in school history. Most importantly, Tech’s win-loss record received the biggest improvement under Hays, whose 38-18 record in his first season is the best finish for a first-year head coach in program history. Three Tech players - Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney, were named to the All-Big 12 second team following the regular season. Tech’s transformation should come as little surprise after Hays’ work at Lubbock Christian. Following his appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008. The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugural season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship, earning Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his two-year tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national championship again in 2009. Known as a top-flight recruiter and motivator, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure. Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 1999-2001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s). Prior to accepting the softball position at LCU, Hays was the associate head men’s basketball coach at the University of Houston in 2005-06. Working under head coach Tom Penders, Hays found his knack as a recruiter, helping sign one of the nation’s top 15 recruiting classes in only his first season where the Cougars won 18 games and advanced to a national tournament for the first time in three years. In addition to his time at the Division-I level, Hays has also made stops as the head coach at Frank Phillips College (1995-96), Abilene Christian (1996-99), and Midland College (2002-03), while also serving as the Abilene Christian athletics director from 2001-02. Hays began playing fastpitch softball as a youth, along with baseball and basketball, because his father, the legendary Texas Tech and LCU baseball coach Larry Hays, also played fastpitch softball. Hays, the elder, whose 1,509 wins were good enough for fourth on the all-time collegiate baseball list, retired as Tech’s all-time winningest coach prior to the 2009 season. In a rare twist, Larry Hays succeeded his son at LCU for one season prior to Daren Hays, Shanon’s brother and former Tech assistant baseball coach and director of operations, accepted the position to lead the Lady Chaps beginning with the 2011 season. Shanon Hays began and ended his college career at LCU, graduating with his degree in Education in 1991 after also matriculating at Texas Tech and competing from 1988 - 1990 for his father on the Red Raiders’ baseball team. He competed for LCU prior to that in both baseball and on the basketball teams. He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, his two sons, Hunter, Heath, and his daughter, Hampton.
