INSIDE THE CALIFORNIA SERIES • Texas Tech and Cal will be meeting for the first time ever on the baseball diamond this weekend. • Texas Tech holds an 18-45 all-time record against current members of the Pac-12 Conference. • The Red Raiders had not previously faced a Pac-12 opponent since splitting a pair of midweek games against Arizona State during the 2013 season. • Texas Tech has previously faced a Pac-12 opponent in a weekend series since 2000 when the Red Raiders took two-of-three games from No. 15 Southern California in Lubbock. • This will be the first time Texas Tech has gone on the road for a weekend series against a Pac-12 opponent since traveling to face No. 9 Southern California early in the 1999 season. The Trojans won two of three games in that series. TEXAS TECH NOTES • Texas Tech closes a 12-game stretch this weekend where the Red Raiders will have played 10 games against nationally-ranked opponents. Tech is 3-3 so far in those games. • Texas Tech’s eight-game road trip is its longest in the regular season since the Red Raiders played nine-straight games away from home in 2011 (April 12-23). • The Red Raiders have another eight-game road trip scheduled later this season from April 26-May 10. Texas Tech has not previously made multiple road trips of at least eight games since the 2008 season. • Friday’s series opener will be just the second true road contest for the Red Raiders this year. Texas Tech previously defeated Sam Houston State, 11-6, on Feb. 26 in Huntsville prior to participating in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic held at Minute Maid Park in Houston. • Texas Tech has already scored 91 runs through 13 games this season, its most in that time span since the Red Raiders totaled 106 runs to open the 2010 season. • The Red Raiders have scored 10 or more runs in four games already this season. It is the first time Texas Tech has plated at least 10 runs in four of the first 13 games of a season since 2010 (four times that season as well). • Seven of Texas Tech’s nine regular position starters are currently hitting over .300 for the season. Tanner Gardner leads the team group with a .400 average (15-for-33) followed by Eric Gutierrez with a .388 average. Gardner enters this weekend ranked third in the Big 12 with his .400 clip while Gutierrez is sixth overall. • Texas Tech leads all Big 12 teams entering this weekend with 31 doubles already this season thanks in part to a balanced offense that features five different players with at least four doubles this season. • Through the games played Wednesday night, Texas Tech ranks among the top-45 teams nationally in the following categories: double plays (16th), doubles (18th), sacrifice flies (32nd), doubles per game (32nd), double plays per game (40th) and runs scored (43rd). • Texas Tech currently controls the Big 12 single-game high this season for home runs after hitting five on March 3 against New Mexico State. • The Texas Tech pitching staff has already recorded 103 strikeouts this season, its most over the first 13 games of a season since the Red Raiders fanned 108 to start the 2013 season. • Texas Tech has already inserted 34 of 35 players on the 2016 roster through 13 games this season. • Through seven games at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park this season, Texas Tech currently ranks among the national leaders in attendance. The Red Raiders currently rank 12th nationally in total attendance (33,147) and then 15th in average attendance (3,683). TEXAS TECH TURNS TO FRESHMEN ON THE MOUND EARLY IN THE SEASON • Texas Tech is projected to start four true freshmen on the mound this weekend. It marks the first time at least three freshmen have started in a series under head coach Tim Tadlock. • Steven Gingery became the third Red Raider freshman to start on the mound already this season on Feb. 24 at Sam Houston State. The Huntington Beach, Calif. native joined fellow left-hander Erikson Lanning and right-hander Ty Harpenau after the duo both earned starts on opening weekend against Milwaukee. • Tech had not previously started three true freshman within the first five games of a season dating back to the start of the 2001 campaign. • Gingery is one five Red Raider freshmen pitchers to already appear on the mound this season, joining Lanning, Harpenau, Ryan Shetter, Jonathan Nicholson and Davis Martin. • Martin has already been called on four times out of the bullpen as he is 1-1 with a Big 12-leading two saves. He is the first Red Raider dating back to 1998 to record a win and two saves through the first six games of a season. TEXASTECH.COM

CALIFORNIA | 2016 TEXAS TECH BASEBALL

• Gingery recorded his most impressive performance so far this season on March 2 as the left-hander struck out 12 hitters in a 14-2 rout of New Mexico State. His 12 strikeouts marked the most by a Tech freshman pitcher since Miles Morgan fanned 15 on March 18, 2006, against Texas. The performance earned Gingery his first career win. • Harpenau, meanwhile, will be looking for his first career win Saturday as he has earned three no-decisions despite several quality starts. Harpenau went five complete innings against both Milwaukee and No. 6 Louisiana and left the game with the Red Raiders tied in both outings. GUTE CHASING DOWN THE RECORD BOOK DURING SENIOR SEASON Eric Gutierrez will have a chance to leave his name in several spots in the Texas Tech record book following his senior season as he already ranks among the top 10 in program history in several offensive categories, including RBI (148), total bases (336), doubles (48) and hits (205). TADLOCK JUST FIVE WINS SHY OF PLACING THIRD ALL-TIME IN TEXAS TECH HISTORY Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock could potentially take over third place on the school’s career wins chart early in the 2016 season as the fourth-year skipper trails Dan Spencer (2009-12) by five wins heading into the Cal series. Tadlock, who has won 110 games over the past three-plus seasons, led the Red Raiders to 26 victories his first season in 2013 (second-most by a Tech head coach in debut season). He followed up with 45 wins - the fourth-most in school history - and Tech’s first ever trip to the College World Series in 2014 before finishing with 31 victories a year ago. Tech is coming off consecutive 30-win seasons for just the first time since the 2005 and 2006 seasons. TEXAS TECH ALL-TIME CAREER WINS LEADERS 1. Larry Hays (1987-2012)___________ 813 2. It marked Tech’s longest winning streak in the College Classic in program history. • Texas Tech extended its win streak to five-consecutive games with a victory over Louisiana, its longest since winning six straight from Feb. 20-March 3 last year. • The Red Raiders hit .280 as a team for the tournament with 14 runs scored and a pair of home runs that were hit by Stephen Smith and Orlando Garcia. • The Red Raider pitching staff finished with a 3.86 ERA in the College Classic after allowing 15 runs (12 earned) over 28.0 complete innings. • Ryan Long provided the game-winning RBI in each of Texas Tech’s two victories as he connected on a two-run single in the sixth inning against Houston and then added a two-run double in the 10th against Louisiana. He is the first Red Raider to record the game-winning RBI in back-to-back games since Tyler Neslony provided the winning run against both Northern Illinois (Feb. 21) and Sacramento State (Feb. 25) last season. • Texas Tech scored five runs in the first inning against Arkansas, its most since plating seven runners on April 8, 2014, against Abilene Christian. • Following the event, the Houston Astros announced that Texas Tech infielder Michael Davis had earned All-Tournament Team honors after leading the Red Raiders with a .583 average (7-for-12) over the course of all three games. • In addition, the Astros also announced that Texas Tech will return to the Shriners College Classic in 2017, joining fellow Big 12 counterparts Baylor and TCU as well Southeastern Conference foes Ole Miss, LSU and Texas A&M. STEPHEN SMITH NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Stephen Smith was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Feb. 22 after the junior led the Red Raiders to a series win against Milwaukee. This is the first weekly award for Smith, who hit .571 overall (8-for-14) with seven runs scored, four doubles, five RBI, two stolen bases, a .857 slugging percentage and a .684 on-base percentage. He ended the weekend with at least a share of the Big 12 lead in five categories: hits, runs scored, doubles, total bases and on-base percentage. Smith, who had at least one hit in all four games in the series, is the first Red Raider outfielder to receive Big 12 Player of the Week accolades since Adam Kirsch earned the honor on May 19, 2014. TEXAS TECH RETURNS BULK OF 2015 LINEUP • Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock boasts one of the most experienced lineups of his tenure this season as the Red Raiders return 12 position players from a year ago, including seven starters. It marks the second time in the past three seasons Tech has returned at least seven position starters as the Red Raiders previously brought back eight starters prior to the 2014 campaign. • In Texas Tech’s group of seven returning position starters, five are seniors with a combined 539 games played over their career. Eric Gutierrez, Tyler Neslony and Zach Davis all feature three years of experience in a Red Raider uniform while Tyler Floyd and Cory Raley both transfered to Tech following successful junior-college careers. • Texas Tech is tied with Oklahoma State and Baylor for the most position starters returning heading into this season. • Texas Tech’s group of returners accounted for 219 of the 269 RBI in 2015 (81 percent) as well as 33 of 41 home runs on the year (80 percent). • The Red Raiders return their top four hitters (minimum of 50 at-bats) by average from the 2015 season in Cory Raley (.350), Eric Gutierrez (.315), Stephen Smith (.291) and Tyler Neslony (.286). That group combined for 23 home runs and 134 RBI during the 2015 season alone.

NEW TURF, VIDEO BOARD HIGHLIGHT IMPROVEMENTS TO RIP GRIFFIN PARK Red Raider fans will see a pair of new additions as they enter Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park this season as Texas Tech installed a new FieldTurf surface in December and then upgraded its video board to the version that previously occupied Jones AT&T Stadium. The nearly $1 million project will provide Tech with one of the largest video boards in college baseball as well as a state-of-the-art playing surface. The screen size on the video board will more than double from 15-by-20 feet on the previous model to 48-by-22 feet. Both projects were funded privately through philanthropic contributions and gifts to The Campaign for Fearless Champions. HOTTEST TICKET IN TOWN ... AGAIN After selling out season tickets for the first time in program history prior to 2015 season, Texas Tech fans once again scooped up season tickets in record numbers as Tech sold more than 2,400 season tickets prior to Opening Day. Tech sold out of season tickets just a few weeks later, marking the second-straight year where Red Raider fans have purchased over 2,500 season tickets. Tech has ranked among the top 31 schools in the nation over the past 18 years in average attendance per game. Tech closed the 2015 season averaging 3,665 fans per game, a figure that ranked 13th nationally and the third highest in program history. FLOYD EARNS HIS TEXAS TECH DEGREE PRIOR TO SENIOR SEASON Tyler Floyd will enter his senior season with already a degree in hand as the senior graduated this December with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in the Texas Tech exercise sports science program. Floyd, who started in 46 games at catcher in 2015, was recognized as the highest-ranking graduate in the ESS program as part of the commencement ceremonies. Floyd was honored late in the 2015 season on the Academic All-Big 12 first team where he was the only conference student-athlete nominated with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Tim Tadlock, the 2014 College Baseball Hall of Fame National Coach of the Year, enters his fourth season as the head coach at Texas Tech after taking the Red Raiders to the College World Series in just his second season while winning over 100 games in his tenure. Tadlock was named head coach of his alma mater on June 8, 2012, becoming the ninth head coach in program history. Tadlock will enter his 24th year in collegiate baseball in 2016. He owns a collegiate career record of 545-207 in 12 years as a head coach with nine seasons at Grayson County College (435-127) and three at Texas Tech (110-80). Tadlock and the Red Raiders completed the biggest turnaround in school history and the second biggest turnaround in Big 12 history, going from 26 wins in 2013 to 45 wins in 2014. The season culminated with Texas Tech’s first trip to the College World Series in Omaha. Tadlock was named the ABCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year as well as the Skip Bertman National Coach of the Year while guiding the Red Raiders to their best season in school history with a 45-21 overall mark and 14-10 Big 12 record. Tech finished 31-24 overall in Tadlock’s third season in 2015, marking the first time since 2005-06 where the Red Raiders have posted consecutive 30-win seasons. The Red Raiders completed Big 12 play at 13-11 overall, securing a tie for third place in the conference standings, Tech’s highest finish since the 2004 season. It was also the second-straight season where Tech has finished among the top four in the Big 12 standings, a first for the Red Raiders since the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Tadlock returned to his alma mater for the 2012 season as the program’s associate head coach and recruiting coordinator following six successful seasons as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma. Tadlock produced several of the nation’s top recruiting classes while at Oklahoma, helping lead the Sooners back to the College World Series in 2010, the Sooners first trip to Omaha since 1995. After beginning his college coaching career as an assistant at Hill College (1993-96) for four seasons, Tadlock became the head coach at Grayson County Junior College, where he led the Vikings to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association World Series titles in 1999 and 2000. During his nine seasons at Grayson, Tadlock posted a 435-127 (.774) overall record while being named National Coach of the Year following both title runs (1999-2000). After a prep career at Denton High School and two years at Hill College, Tadlock was a two-year starting shortstop for the Red Raiders where he helped lead Texas Tech to its first-ever 40-win season as a senior in 1991 (42-18). Tadlock graduated with his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Texas Tech in May 1992. He also earned a master’s degree in education in August 1994 from the University of Texas at Tyler. Tadlock and his wife, Kelly, have two children, daughter, Chloe (14), and son, Benjamin (12). Year 2013 2014 2015 2016 Career

2016 AT A GLANCE Erikson Lanning will be making his third start of the season Friday evening at Cal. The southpaw is currently 1-1 this season with a 4.50 ERA in his two previous starts against Milwaukee and New Mexico State. Lanning picked up the win in his collegiate debut as he allowed just one hit, a walk and a hit-by-pitch over six shutout innings on Feb. 21 against Milwaukee. Milwaukee finished with just two hits off the Tech pitching staff, marking the second consecutive two-hitter tossed by the Red Raiders. Tech had not previously recorded back-to-back two hit outings against an opponent dating back to the 2001 season. The impressive debut marked the first time a Red Raider had earned the win and combined on a shutout in his first collegiate start since Matt Withrow helped Tech trounce Northern Illinois, 13-0, on Feb. 17, 2013. LAST TIME OUT Lanning suffered the first loss of his career a week ago in Texas Tech’s 7-6 setback against New Mexico State. Lanning lasted four innings, surrendering six runs (five earned) off six hits and three strikeouts. LANNING RETURNS TO TEXAS FOR COLLEGE CAREER Erikson Lanning’s selection of Texas Tech as a college destination is a return to the Lone Star State for the left-hander. Lanning, who grew up most of his life in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, moved to Woodstock, Georgia, prior to his junior year of high school. The southpaw was recruited heavily by several east coast schools before ultimately choosing Texas Tech.

2016 AT A GLANCE Steven Gingery will be making his third career start Saturday against Cal as the freshman is currently 1-1 this season with a 6.75 ERA over three appearances (9.1 innings). Gingery, who made previous starts against Sam Houston State (Feb. 24) and New Mexico State (March 2), is coming off his first career win which came last Wednesday in a 14-2 rout of the Aggies. Gingery tossed 5.1 strong innings against New Mexico State, allowing just two runs off four hits while striking out 12 hitters. He previously pitched 2.1 innings in his first career start against Sam Houston State, earning a no-decision after giving up five runs (two earned) off five hits and a pair of walks. Gingery made his collegiate debut out of the bullpen with 1.2 innings of relief against Milwaukee on Feb. 20. Gingery suffered the loss in that outing after allowing three runs off four hits, a walk and two strikeouts. LAST TIME OUT Gingery recorded one of the best performances for a freshman in school history in his March 2 start against New Mexico State. The southpaw picked up the win against the Aggies after surrendering two runs off four hits and a career-high 12 strikeouts. His 12 strikeouts marked the msot for a Red Raider since Corey Taylor fanned 12 as well in 2013 against Utah Valley. A Tech freshman had not previously struck out at least 12 hitters since Miles Morgan retired 13 hitters via strikeout on March 18, 2006, against Texas. His 12 strikeouts alone marked a season high for Tech as a team this season.

2016 AT A GLANCE Harpenau will make his fourth career start and third against a top-25 team on Sunday at No. 9 Cal. Harpenau heads into the start looking for his first career win as he has earned three no-decisions so far this season while posting a 3.29 ERA over 13.2 innings. The freshman has recorded three strong outings already this year as Harpenau has not allowed more than two runs in any of his three starts. He struck out seven hitters in his career debut on Feb. 20 against Milwaukee, the most (at the time) for a Red Raider freshman since current teammate Ryan Moseley also fanned seven on May 2, 2014, at Kansas. Harpenau earned a no-decision against Milwaukee after allowing just one run off three hits. He tossed five complete innings in Tech’s 3-2 victory over No. 6 Louisiana on Feb. 27 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic at Houston before lasting 3.2 innings last Saturday in a 6-5 win over No. 22 Cal State Fullerton. LAST TIME OUT Harpenau earned his third no-decision already this season last Saturday in Texas Tech’s 6-5 victory over No. 22 Cal State Fullerton. The freshman tossed 3.2 innings against the Titans where he allowed two runs off off five hits and three walks. Tech has won each of Harpenau’s last two starts, both of which that came against nationally-ranked opponents. HARPENAU JOINS BETTIS AS ONLY FRESHMAN SINCE 2001 TO START GAME TWO Texas Tech freshman right-handed pitcher Ty Harpenau joined pretty elusive company during opening weekend as he was the first Red Raider freshman pitcher since Chad Bettis in 2008 to start the second game of a season. Bettis tossed six complete innings, allowing two runs (one earned) off three hits, four walks and four strikeouts in a 16-2 rout of Army in a game played in San Antonio. Harpenau and fellow freshman Erikson Lanning are the only freshmen duo to start in two of the first four games of a season dating back to 2001. HARPENAU HAS BEEN AROUND COLLEGE BASEBALL BEFORE While Harpenau is in first season at the collegiate level, it is not the first time he’s been in a college dugout. Harpenau grew up watching his father - Dale Harpenau - lead Arkansas-Fort Smith to over 500 wins in his 16 seasons leading the program. Dale Harpenau was a two-time All-Conference selection as a catcher at Arkansas Tech University.
