No. 24 Texas Tech hits the road for the first time in Big 12 play this weekend, traveling to Ames, Iowa for a two-game series with Iowa State that begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Southwest Athletic Complex. clones, 17-13, following last year’s series split in Lubbock. The Red Raiders have won nine of the last 12 meetings between the two schools. Tech trails Iowa State, 8-7, in games played in Ames, however. FIRST TIME AS A TRUE VISITIOR Texas Tech has not had a game yet this season where the Red Raiders are playing at the opposing team’s home venue. Tech has taken two trips this year to Tempe, Ariz. and Clearwater, Fla. for tournaments, but every game has been a neutral site contest. Among teams ranked in the top 50 of the ratings percentage index (RPI), only Tech and Stanford have not played a true road game this season. MOVING UP IN THE RPI Despite a slow start to Big 12 play, Texas Tech moved up two spots in the latest RPI rankings, sliding to No. 28 overall. The rankings were released prior to Tech’s doubleheader on Wednesday against Baylor. BOOSTING ITS RESUME Tech’s slow start to Big 12 play might not hurt the Red Raiders in the long run as all three opponents so far - Missouri, Oklahoma, and Baylor - are ranked in the top 10 of the RPI rankings. Tech is 2-4 this season against teams ranked among the top 15 of the RPI.

ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field opened in 2001, giving Texas Tech one of the newest softball facilities in the country. In the 10 years since its opening, the complex has gone through several changes, including the addition of the team facility down the left field line which opened in 2010, making “The Rock” one of the finest facilities in the country. DIRECTIONS TO ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field is located on 10th Street near University Medical Center (UMC). The softball complex is adjacent to the McLeod Tennis Center and can be best reached via Texas Tech Parkway. FROM THE AIRPORT: Take I-27 South from Regis Street and exit west on the Marsha Sharp Freeway. Take the Texas Tech Parkway exit and turn north (right) for a quarter of a mile until you reach the first stop light (10th Street). Turn back east (right) and Rocky Johnson Field will be on the right side.

A LOOK AT IOWA STATE... Iowa State enters this weekend’s series reeling from losses in five of its last six games, including a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Minnesota on Thursday. The Cyclones are currently 1-3 in Big 12 play following a series split against Oklahoma State to open conference and a sweep from Texas A&M in College Station last weekend. Iowa State ranks last in both hitting and pitching categories among league teams as the Cyclones are hitting .293 on the year while the pitching staff has recorded a 4.11 ERA to this point. DON’T GIVE UP ON TECH YET... After a 3-8 start to Big 12 play last year, Tech rallied to win four-straight games, including a doubleheader sweep of 7th-ranked Oklahoma State that set the Red Raiders up for an eventual NCAA Regional berth. Tech will look for a similar occurrence to start this weekend as the Red Raiders are 1-5 in league play so far. UNCOMMON ERRORS PLAGUE TECH Part of Tech’s struggles in its midweek series against Baylor stemmed from miscues in the field as the Red Raiders combined to post five errors. Tech entered the doubleheader without an error in each of its last five games and eight of the last nine games overall. KENNEY MOVES TO FOURTH ON HOME RUN LIST Mikey Kenney’s seventh inning home run in the series opener against Baylor moved the sophomore into sole possession of fourth on the school’s career chart. Kenney now trails Jennifer Corkin (2005-08) by three homers for third place. Kim Martinez owns the school record with 27 home runs in the 1997 and 1999 seasons, followed by Paula Workman (19972000) with 23 career dingers. HAYS MAKES CHANGES TO THE LINEUP Prior to the Oklahoma series, Mikey Kenney had led off every game for the Red Raider this season, but Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays made his first significant change of the year, inserting Logan Hall into the leadoff spot. Baylor, moving Emily Bledsoe to the top of the lineup. Since the change, Mikey Kenney has moved to the No. 3 hole primarily. BLEDSOE, KENNEY LED TECH LAST YEAR VS. ISU Mikey Kenney and Emily Bledsoe will be looking to repeat last year’s performance against the Cyclones as both finished 4-for-7 at the plate. Kenney also added two RBIs in the series finale, while Bledsoe added two doubles of her own in the series. EFFICIENCY IS TECH’S NAME ON THE BASES The Red Raiders are currently third in the Big 12 for stolen bases as Tech has swiped 57 bases to this point. The more impressive part, however, is that Tech has only been caught stealing six times, a stat that only trails Iowa State for fewest in the league. The Cyclones have been successful in 25 of 30 attempts this year, giving Tech a slight advantage in success percentage. Mikey Kenney is a perfect 12-12 this season to lead the Red Raiders. GENTSCH, TONGATE SWINGING HOT BATS Since Big 12 play began, catchers Holley Gentsch and Randi Tongate have combined to go 7-for-17 (.412 avg.) at the plate as both players have seen action behind the plate. BIG 12 BOASTS EIGHT RANKED SQUADS With eight schools currently ranked in the top 25, the Big 12 might be the toughest conference in the country this season as No. 5 Texas leads the pack followed by No. 11 Nebraska, No. 14 Oklahoma, No. 16 Missouri, No. 17 Baylor, No. 20 Texas A&M, No. 21 Oklahoma State and then No. 24 Texas Tech. BLEDSOE A REGULAR ON THE BASES Through 42 games this season, Emily Bledsoe has reached base in 41 of those outings, including the first 34 games of the year. Bledsoe is second on the team with a .500 on-base percentage, trailing only Cydney Allen’s .556 percentage.

Kenney is also tied for second in the nation for total doubles with Brigete Del Ponte of Arizona. Stanford’s Ashley Hansen has recorded 17 two-baggers to lead the country. WARD MAKES SECOND START OF THE YEAR Freshman Kermitria Ward made only her second start of the year in the circle Wednesday in the series opener against Baylor. The freshman, who boasts Tech’s lowest ERA at 1.62, was playing her hometown team as Ward, along with battery-mate Holley Gentsch, both went to Midway High School in Waco. SARTINI PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Texas Tech head coach promoted assistant coach Aly Sartini to the title of associate head coach on March 31. Sartini, in her second year at Tech, directs the Tech pitching staff and outfielders, while also assisting in the program’s recruiting efforts as well as academic and travel matters. FANS PACK THE ROCK Texas Tech’s 1,248 fans in attendance during the series finale against Missouri easily broke the school record of 853 set on March 28 last year against Iowa State. Three of the five largest crowds in school history have come in Shanon Hays’ two-year tenure and fans are encouraged to once again pack Rocky Johnson Field again this weekend against Oklahoma. RED RAIDER SECOND IN THE NATION IN WINS Heading into to the Baylor series, Tech was second in the nation in total wins, trailing only No. 1 ranked Alabama (37-2). Tech has led the nation up to this week as the Red Raiders were one of the final undefeated teams in the country. REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK Through only 42 games, the 2011 Texas Tech squad has already laid its mark in the school’s record book, setting the single-season records for runs, RBIs, home runs, and games ended via run rule. The Red Raiders have also had two no-hitters this season from freshmen Kermitria Ward and Brittany Talley, while several individuals such as Logan Hall, Cydney Allen, and Sandy James have either broken or matched single-game records already in place. TOUGH STRETCH TO START CONFERENCE PLAY Prior to the season, both Oklahoma and Missouri were picked to finish first and second in the Big 12, respectively. Texas Tech, who was picked to finish seventh, will host both schools to open Big 12 play as the Red Raiders will get an early test to see where it stands in the Big 12 ranks. Not to make things easier, the Red Raiders will then face No. 15 Baylor in a midweek doubleheader on April 6 as Tech will open league play with three-straight series against ranked opponents. RED RAIDERS BOAST BIG 12’s TOP OFFENSE Texas Tech enters this week’s action with the top offense in the Big 12 Conference as the Red Raiders have posted a .368 average so far. The next highest average in the conference is .354 from Texas. BLEDSOE ENDS CAREER HIGH HITTING STREAK Emily Bledsoe snapped her career-long 13 game hitting streak in Tech’s 5-1 victory over Jacksonville. The junior infielder went 0-for-1 at the plate but reached base three times off two walks and a hit by pitch.

RED RAIDERS FACE TOUGH PITCHING IN FLORIDA Heading into the USF The Game Tournament in Florida, one thing head coach Shanon Hays thought might benefit Tech down the road was the improved pitching the Red Raiders would see. Tech for the most part saw each school’s top pitcher, including Jacksonville’s Sarah Sigrest, who one-hit Big 12 foe Texas A&M the day before facing Tech. PATIENCE HELPS TECH SET SCHOOL RECORD In Tech’s first game in Clearwater, Fla., the Red Raiders took advantage of 18 Colorado State walks at the plate, shattering the school record of 11 that was previously set in 2007 against Oklahoma State. TECH KEEPS EARNING WEEKLY ACCOLADES Sandy James became the third-consecutive Texas Tech player to be named the Big 12 Player of the Week last week as the sophomore joined Logan Hall and Cydney Allen as weekly accolade honorees. Prior to this season, only four Tech players had earned Player of the Week honors. James hit .667 during the Masked Rider Invitational with six home runs to go along with 20 RBIs, pacing Tech to a doubleheader sweep of New Mexico and a 7-1 week. WARD’S NO-HITTER TIES SCHOOL RECORD Kermitria Ward tossed her first career no-hitter against Alcorn State on March 13, becoming just the fifth Tech pitcher to ever record the feat. Ward joins freshman teammate Brittany Talley in the no-hit club as the duo tied the school record set in 1999 for most no-hitters in a single season. The freshman was making her first collegiate start against the Braves after coming out of the bullpen for most of the year. DENNIS RELIABLE IN THE CIRCLE During Tech’s 25-game homestand, Kelsey Dennis has found her groove in the circle. The junior allowed only eight earned runs in 40.2 innings of work, while posting a team-high four shutouts during that stretch, including three one-hitters. ONE OF THE FINAL UNBEATENS When Texas Tech’s undefeated streak came to an end on March 11, the Red Raiders were one of only five teams still without a loss. Washington earned the title of the nation’s final undefeated squad before eventually falling to Texas on March 17. NEW MEXICO PROVES TO BE TOUGH TEST Tech’s doubleheader against New Mexico ended up being two of Tech’s closest games this season as the Red Raiders took game one, 9-6, before closing the day with a 5-3 win. Tech had previously played only one game (St. John’s on Feb. 25) since the seasonopening Arizona State Kajikawa Tournament that was decided by three runs or less. JAMES LEAVES HER MARK AGAINST LOBOS Sandy James provided a huge lift to the Tech offense against New Mexico, belting two home runs in the doubleheader while adding eight RBIs. Her four RBIs in each game set a new season high as the sophomore accounted for eight of Tech’s 14 total runs. PITCHING STAFF SETS SCHOOL RECORDS The Texas Tech pitching staff set several school records during the Red Raider Classic, including most shutouts in a row (5), consecutive hitless innings (11.2), and consecutive shutout innings (27.1). Brittany Talley leads the Red Raiders in wins so far with eight on the year.

2011 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL HALL NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK After hitting .583 during the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic, junior infielder Logan Hall was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on March 1. In addition to her 7-for-12 weekend at the plate, Hall added three home runs, two of which were grand slams, and 16 total RBIs to help keep Tech undefeated. AVERAGES SOURING OVER .400 Texas Tech had four to five regular position players with a batting average at .400 or higher early in the year. Cydney Allen led all players with a .460 average followed by Logan Hall, Raven Richardson, and Emily Bledsoe. Mikey Kenney was slightly under the group with a .387 average. TECH A STAPLE ON ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Five Red Raiders along were named to the all-tournament team of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic while Logan Hall was honored as the tournament’s Top Hitter and Brittany Talley was selected as the Top Pitcher. Cydney Allen, Emily Bledsoe, Kelsey Dennis, Mikey Kenney, and Raven Richardson were all honored on the all-tournament team. KENNEY PRODUCING IN LEADOFF SPOT Since moving to the leadoff spot to start the year, Mike Kenney has continued to show she is one of the top power hitters in the Big 12 as the sophomore has been one of the main catalysts for the Tech offense this year with her .500 on-base percentage and .387 batting average. She leads the Big 12 with 13 doubles, four more than her total from the entire 2010 season. DREWRY MATCHES CAREER RBI NUMBERS After only 22 games, Stephanie Drewry is close to matching her RBI total from the previous two seasons combined. The junior currently has 17 RBIs this year, matching her total from the previous two seasons. HALL NAMED STAT STAR ON ESPN.COM Following her performance at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic, Logan Hall was selected as one of ESPN’s “Stat Stars” for the previous week. The website lists the top performers from the previous week each Monday or Tuesday on its College Sports page. JEANNINE MCHANEY MEMORIAL CLASSIC Texas Tech honored the university’s long-considered founder of women’s athletics with the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Red Raiders faced St. John’s, Northern Illinois, and Wichita State in the three-day event that ran Feb. 25-27 at Rocky Johnson Field. McHaney was the first athletics director when the women’s athletics department was formed in 1975 and remained a top member of the athletics department for the next two decades. She passed away in 1994. HALL BOOSTS MIDDLE OF THE ORDER To say Logan Hall had a successful Texas Tech Invitational might be an understatement. The junior infielder hit .611 at the plate (11-for-18) with 11 RBIs, three of which came off a three-run home run against Utah Valley in the weekend finale. Hall leads Tech with 40 RBIs on the year and has recorded a .500 average, the highest on the team. SPEAKING OF HALL... ALLEN MAKES SUCCESSFUL DEBUT After only one weekend in a Red Raider uniform, Cydney Allen proved why she was one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the nation coming out of Salt Lake Community College. TALLEY TALLIES UP THE RESULTS For being only a freshman, Brittany Talley had a lot of responsibility on her left arm in Arizona. The Little Elm, Texas native got the start against both No. 16 BYU and No. 12 Cal, picking up the win against the Golden Bears. Talley was an out away from a complete game win over BYU before the Cougars responded with a game-tying two-run home run. After going 5.1 innings against Cal, Talley returned to the circle later in the night to close the Indiana game, going the final 2.2 innings to earn the save.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT DREWRY With all the individual successes of the Kajikawa Classic, the play of Stephanie Drewry should not be forgotten. The junior outfielder went 2-for-3 at the plate against Appalachian State and drove in a career-high five RBIs while posting a .467 average. KERM PROVING TO BE SOLID RELIEVER Freshman Kermitria Ward proved to be a reliable arm out of the bullpen in Arizona, picking up the win against BYU before earning the save against Cal. The Texas 4A Player of the Year as a high school senior, Ward recorded a 2.74 ERA in 7.2 innings during her collegiate debut. HAYS CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL BIRTHDAY Tech’s wins over No. 12 Cal and Indiana was no ordinary day at the park for head coach Shanon Hays. 2011 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL BIG 12 PROVES TOUGH ONCE AGAIN To say the Big 12 schedule will be a cake-walk for any team would be an exaggeration. Eight of the conference’s 10 schools appeared in one of the two major top 25 polls this season with one more (Kansas) also receiving votes.

Florida for the UCF Tournament. The Red Raiders begin Big 12 play with their first five conference games at home as Missouri, Oklahoma, and Baylor all travel to Lubbock. Tech will also have home series against Kansas and in-state rival Texas. Tech’s 35 home games is the most in school history.

BYU GAME MARKS A FIRST FOR TECH Prior to last weekend, Texas Tech had never gone to extra innings in its season opener. The Red Raiders were an out away from ending the game in the seventh, but instead won, 7-5, in nine innings.

TECH RECEIVES VOTES IN PRESEASON POLL Texas Tech enters the 2011 season earning votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls as the Red Raiders picked up four votes in each poll. “THE ROCK” SEES NEW ADDITION Fans entering Rocky Johnson Field this season will see a new addition just off the warning track - a new outfield wall. A black, padded wall replaced the chain-link fence that had been in place since the park’s opening in 2001. The wall also extends down the outfield foul lines.

EIGHT STARTERS RETURN FROM LAST YEAR With eight starters returning in the field from the 2010 squad that advanced to the NCAA Stanford Regional, the Red Raiders should have a wealth of experience to rely on when Big 12 play begins. NO SENIORS, NO PROBLEM The Red Raiders will have one noticeable difference in their roster than every other school in the Big 12 - Tech has no seniors on its 2011 roster. Instead, second-year head coach Shanon Hays will rely on an experienced group of 11 juniors. HAYS ADDS SIX NEWCOMERS Even with most of his roster from a year ago back, Tech head coach Shanon Hays added seven newcomers this spring, most notably junior college transfers Cydney Allen and Kelsey Dennis and freshman Kermitria Ward. Freshmen Brittany Talley and Taylor Powell along with sophomore transfer Sandy James will add to the list of newcomers. FROM ACROSS THE NATION Nearly half of Texas Tech’s 21 players are originally from a state other than Texas as only 11 players hail from the Lone Star State. All together eight states are represented on this year’s roster, including Alabama Arizona, California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Washington.

RYBA TO REDSHIRT 2011 SEASON Despite appearing on Tech’s roster, junior infielder Melissa Ryba will redshirt the 2011 season in order to comply with NCAA transfer rules. Ryba spent the past two seasons at Northern Colorado. TECH SIGNS FIVE IN FALL PERIOD Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays announced the signing of five future student-athletes to national letters of intent this fall as Hannah Bell, Cara Custer, Chandler Moore, Adriana Perez and Katelyn Williams will all join the program for the 2012 season.

No stranger to building programs, Shanon Hays took over as head coach of the Texas Tech softball team in 2010 and immediately led the Red Raiders back to the NCAA postseason in only his first season, laying the groundwork for a program on the rise. The fifth head coach since the resurrection of the program in 1996, Hays helped guide the Red Raiders to a 23-win improvement last year from the 2009 season, while eventually advancing all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Stanford Regional. Under Hays, all facets of the game improved as the Tech hitters snapped the school record for runs, slugging percentage, and home runs in a season, while the pitching staff boasted its lowest earned-run average since 2001 and the Tech defense committed its fewest errors in school history. Most importantly, Tech’s win-loss record received the biggest improvement under Hays, whose 38-18 record in his first season is the best finish for a first-year head coach in program history. Three Tech players - Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney, were named to the All-Big 12 second team following the regular season. Tech’s transformation should come as little surprise after Hays’ work at Lubbock Christian. Following his appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008. The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugural season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship, earning Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his two-year tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national championship again in 2009. Known as a top-flight recruiter and motivator, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure. Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 1999-2001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s). Prior to accepting the softball position at LCU, Hays was the associate head men’s basketball coach at the University of Houston in 2005-06. Working under head coach Tom Penders, Hays found his knack as a recruiter, helping sign one of the nation’s top 15 recruiting classes in only his first season where the Cougars won 18 games and advanced to a national tournament for the first time in three years. In addition to his time at the Division-I level, Hays has also made stops as the head coach at Frank Phillips College (1995-96), Abilene Christian (1996-99), and Midland College (2002-03), while also serving as the Abilene Christian athletics director from 2001-02. Hays began playing fastpitch softball as a youth, along with baseball and basketball, because his father, the legendary Texas Tech and LCU baseball coach Larry Hays, also played fastpitch softball. Hays, the elder, whose 1,509 wins were good enough for fourth on the all-time collegiate baseball list, retired as Tech’s all-time winningest coach prior to the 2009 season. In a rare twist, Larry Hays succeeded his son at LCU for one season prior to Daren Hays, Shanon’s brother and former Tech assistant baseball coach and director of operations, accepted the position to lead the Lady Chaps beginning with the 2011 season. Shanon Hays began and ended his college career at LCU, graduating with his degree in Education in 1991 after also matriculating at Texas Tech and competing from 1988 - 1990 for his father on the Red Raiders’ baseball team. He competed for LCU prior to that in both baseball and on the basketball teams. He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, his two sons, Hunter, Heath, and his daughter, Hampton.
