FIRST PITCH • No. 10 Texas Tech begins a five-game homestand at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park on Tuesday night when the Red Raiders open a midweek series against Sam Houston State with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. The two-game series concludes with a 2 p.m. start Wednesday afternoon.

• After playing five games on the road last week, all against nationally-ranked opponents, Texas Tech will play eight of its next 10 games at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. The Red Raiders, who are 12-4 at home this season, host both San Diego State and Texas in weekend series over the next two weeks.

• Texas Tech and Sam Houston State met earlier this season as the Red Raiders rallied to top the Bearkats, 11-6, on Feb. 24 in Huntsville. Tech benefited from nine two-out RBI in the win, six of which that came in the third inning and erased an early three-run deficit.

• The victory earlier this season improved the Red Raiders to 3-4 all-time against Sam Houston State, which includes a 1-1 mark in games played in Lubbock. This will be just the second trip ever to Lubbock for the Bearkats as the two teams split a midweek series in 2002.

Michael Davis led all Big 12 players • The Red Raiders are coming off a 4-1 road trip where Texas Tech took victories at both No. 5 last week as the sophomore comto drive in 11 runs against FlorFlorida State and No. 16 Oklahoma State. Tech concluded the week with a three-game sweep of bined ida State and Oklahoma State. the Cowboys, its first ever in a road series against a ranked Big 12 opponent.

• Texas Tech heads into its open week on the Big 12 schedule atop the conference standings as the Red Raiders are 11-1 in league play with wins in each of their last 10 games. It marks the best start to Big 12 play in school history and the best for a conference team since Baylor started the 2012 league slate with 18-consecutive victories.

• The Red Raiders appear in all six of the major collegiate baseball polls this week as Texas Tech is ranked as high as 10th by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Tech also ranks 14th in polls conducted by D1Baseball and Perfect Game, 15th by Baseball America, 21st in the USA Today Coaches’ and 23rd by NCBWA. • In addition, Texas Tech’s road trip to both Florida State and Oklahoma State has moved the Red Raiders to No. 12 in Monday’s release of the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) rankings. The Red Raiders began their road trip at No. 29 in the poll before climbing 17 spots after four wins against nationally-ranked opponents.

INSIDE THE SAM HOUSTON STATE SERIES • Texas Tech and Sam Houston State will meet for the eighth time in program history Tuesday night and the second time already during the 2016 season as the Red Raiders previously topped the Bearkats, 11-6, on Feb. 24 in Huntsville.

• Sam Houston State will be making just its second trip to Lubbock in program history as the two teams previously split a twogame midweek series during the 2002 season.

• The Red Raiders already made their first trip to Huntsville since 1955 earlier this season when Texas Tech used a six-run third inning to overcome an early deficit in its 11-6 victory over the Bearkats. Tech plated nine of its 11 runs with two outs as nine different Red Raiders had at least one RBI in the victory.

• Prior to this season, Texas Tech and Sam Houston State had not met since the 2014 Houston College Classic. Only three current Red Raiders appeared in the 10-6 loss - Ryan Long, Eric Gutierrez and Stephen Smith.

• Texas Tech and Sam Houston State have traditionally scored runs in multitudes against each other as the two schools have combined to average 17.7 runs per game in the previous six meetings.

RED RAIDERS OFF TO BEST START TO BIG 12 PLAY IN SCHOOL HISTORY • Texas Tech’s three-game sweep of Oklahoma State improved the Red Raiders to 11-1 in Big 12 Conference play, marking their best start to league action in school history.

• The Red Raiders’ 11-1 start to Big 12 play marks the best start to league action for a Big 12 team since Baylor won each of its first 18 games in 2012.

• The sweep of Oklahoma State extended Texas Tech’s winning streak in Big 12 play to 10-straight games, its longest in program history. It also matched the fifth-longest winning streak for a conference team in league history.

• Texas Tech has swept each of its last three Big 12 series for the first time in program history (Oklahoma, K-State, Oklahoma State).

• Texas Tech’s series sweep of Oklahoma State marked its first over a ranked opponent since the Red Raiders took all three games from No. 17 Baylor in 2002. It also marked the first road sweep for Tech over a ranked Big 12 opponent in program history.

• Texas Tech had not previously swept a Big 12 opponent on the road since traveling to Kansas on May 1-3, 2004.

• In addition, Texas Tech had not previously swept Oklahoma State at home or on the road in school history.

• Texas Tech enters this week’s five-game homestand ranked 12th nationally in Monday’s RPI rankings, its highest appearance in the poll this season.

• Texas Tech has eight victories already this season against ranked opponents, its most since winning 12 games versus top-25 opponents in 2014.

• Texas Tech leads the Big 12 Conference with eight victories this season against nationally-ranked opponents.

• Texas Tech has 38 victories in Big 12 play since the start of the 2014 season, which ranks second in the conference just three wins back of first-place TCU. • The Red Raiders lead the Big 12 in the following categories heading into the Oklahoma State series: walks (164), double plays (40), double plays per game (1.21) and sacrifice flies (17).

• Texas Tech began both the Baylor and Oklahoma series with 5-0 victories, marking the first time since 2001 where the Red Raiders have tossed back-to-back shutouts in Big 12 series openers.

• Texas Tech connected on six home runs during the K-State series, its most during a conference weekend since the Red Raiders crushed 10 in their 2010 series against Missouri.

• Texas Tech was boosted by a seven-run second inning in the series opener against K-State. The inning featured six-consecutive hits by the Red Raiders, their most in a row since recording eight-straight hits on April 7, 2004, against Howard Payne. That streak also occurred in the second inning.

• Texas Tech scored at least 10 runs over three-straight games against both UNLV (March 29) and Kansas State (April 2). The Red Raiders had not previously 10 or more runs in three-consecutive games since early in the 2010 season (Feb. 21-25) against the likes of Michigan, Jacksonville State and Bethune-Cookman.

• The Red Raiders are among the top teams in the country this season with 40 double plays turned through 33 games. Texas Tech currently ranks third nationally heading into this week’s midweek series against Sam Houston State.

• Texas Tech is a combined 16-2 this season when the Red Raiders hit at least one home run.

• Texas Tech is a perfect 22-0 this season when either leading or tied following the eighth inning.

• Texas Tech has scored 112 of its 244 runs (46 percent) within the first three innings this season.

• Texas Tech currently controls the Big 12 single-game high this season for home runs after hitting five on March 3 against New Mexico State.

TEXAS TECH IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS • For the first time this season, Texas Tech is ranked in all six major collegiate polls. The Red Raiders are ranked as high as No. 10 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll and as low as No. 23 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

Tech is also 14th in both the D1Baseball and Perfect Game rankings as well as 15th in Baseball America and 21st in the USA Today Coaches’ poll.

• This is the first time this season where Texas Tech has appeared in both the NCBWA and USA Today Coaches’ polls.

Kansas State 16 TURN TWO - RED RAIDERS ONCE AGAIN AMONG NATION’S ELITE IN DOUBLE PLAYS Texas Tech has regularly ranked among the top teams in the country in doubles plays turned under head coach Tim Tadlock. The Red Raiders ranked seventh nationally in Tadlock’s first season in 2013. Tech followed by finishing sixth in 2014 and then 14th in 2015.

Just five weeks into the 2016 season and the Red Raiders are on pace to continue that trend as Tech ranks third nationally with 40 double plays turned this season. The Red Raiders turned five double plays on Opening Day alone, their most ever in a season opener dating back to 1987.

Tim Tadlock has led the Red Raiders to a 24-9 start to the 2016 season, including an 11-1 mark in Big 12 play. Texas Tech’s 24-9 start marks its best since the Red Raiders opened the 1999 season with a 25-8 record.

THIS WEEK IN TEXAS TECH BASEBALL

MICHAEL DAVIS NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Texas Tech sophomore infielder Michael Davis was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday after leading all conference players with 11 RBI last week, including seven in the Red Raiders’ 15-5 victory over No. 16 Oklahoma State on Sunday. Davis capped a successful week at the plate with seven RBI on Sunday which marked the most for a Red Raider since Chris Richburg also had seven on May 1, 2007, at Dallas Baptist. It was the most RBI for a Red Raider in a Big 12 contest since Gera Alvarez drove in seven runs against Baylor on May 19, 2002. The Lubbock native began the series with the game-winning RBI in Friday’s 5-1 victory. His RBI single was the second of two hits in the win for Davis, who wrapped the Oklahoma State series with a .500 average (6-for-12) to go along with a team-leading nine RBI. In addition, Davis also knocked in a pair of runs in Tech’s 8-4 victory at No. 5 Florida State on Wednesday as he finished 2-for-5 overall. He recorded the game-winning RBI in three of Tech’s four victories during the week.

TADLOCK MOVES INTO THIRD PLACE FOR CAREER WINS AT TEXAS TECH Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock moved into sole possession of third place on the school’s career wins chart on March 24 with a 5-0 victory over Oklahoma. The victory marked the 116th of Tadlock’s career, moving the fourth-year skipper past Dan Spencer (200912) for third place all-time in program history. Tadlock led the Red Raiders to 26 victories his first season in 2013 (second-most by a Tech head coach in debut season). He followed with 45 wins - the fourth-most in school history - and Tech’s first ever trip to the College World Series in 2014 before finishing with 31 victories a year ago. Tech is coming off consecutive 30-win seasons for just the first time since the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

This is the fourth career Big 12 Player of the Week honor for Gutierrez which breaks the school record that he previously shared with three other Red Raider All-Americans, including Roger Kieschnick (2006-08), Cameron Blair (2004-05) and Josh Bard (1997-99). Gutierrez is just the second player in Big 12 history to claim four or more Player of the Week awards, joining former Nebraska standout Ken Harvey who received the accolade four times during the 1999 season. Gutierrez led all Big 12 players with a .500 average (9-for-18) over Tech’s five games last week against UNLV and K-State. He had at least one hit in all five games as he connected on three doubles and a home run while also driving in seven runs. In addition to leading the league in average last week, Gutierrez also shared the conference high for hits (9) and on-base percentage (.583) and ranked second for RBI (7), total bases (15) and doubles (3).

TEXAS TECH TURNS TO FRESHMEN ON THE MOUND EARLY IN THE SEASON • The Texas Tech rotation has featured a freshman starting pitcher in 13 of the past 17 games.

• Texas Tech has started a freshman on the mound in 20 of its 30 games this season. Ty Harpenau leads the group of freshmen with six starts already this season.

• Four different Red Raider freshmen have started on the mound this season - Steven Gingery, Ty Harpenau, Erikson Lanning and Davis Martin. Martin became the fourth Red Raiders to start on March 12 when he earned the nod against No. 9 California.

• Texas Tech had not previously started three true freshmen within the first five games of a season dating back to the start of the 2001 campaign.

• Texas Tech has used six different freshmen pitchers already this season in Lanning, Harpenau, Gingery, Martin, Ryan Shetter and Jonathan Nicholson.

• Over the first two games of the Baylor series, Martin and Gingery combined to allow just four hits, two each, over 11.0 shutout innings. The duo also combined on 10 strikeouts.

• Martin has already been called on five times out of the bullpen as he is 2-0 with two saves. He is the first Red Raider dating back to 1998 to record a win and two saves through the first six games of a season. Martin moved to the weekend rotation prior to the start of the California series.

• Gingery recorded his most impressive performance so far this season on March 2 as the left-hander struck out 12 hitters in a 14-2 rout of New Mexico State. His 12 strikeouts marked the most by a Tech freshman pitcher since Miles Morgan fanned 15 on March 18, 2006, against Texas. The performance earned Gingery his first career win.

• Harpenau is still looking for his first career win as he has earned six no-decisions despite several quality starts. Harpenau went five complete innings against both Milwaukee and No. 6 Louisiana and left the game with the Red Raiders tied in both outings.

• Lanning began his Red Raider career by tossing six shutout innings against Milwaukee where he allowed just one hit while striking out four in a 12-0 rout. The performance marked the first time a Red Raider freshman had earned the win and combined on a shutout in his career debut since Matt Withrow helped Texas Tech trounce Northern Illinois, 13-0, on Feb. 17, 2013.

• Shetter has already appeared nine times out of the bullpen, compiling a 2-1 record with a 3.57 ERA.

GARDNER, MARTIN COLLECT BIG 12 WEEKLY HONORS • Texas Tech sophomore outfielder Tanner Gardner was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on March 21 while freshman right-handed pitcher Davis Martin collected top newcomer honors.

• The weekly award was the first career accolade for both Gardner and Martin as the duo helped lead the Red Raiders (12-7; 2-1) to a 3-1 record last week, including a series win at Baylor in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

• Gardner led all Big 12 players last week with a .615 average (8-for-13) that included at least two hits in three of four games. The successful week pushed Gardner’s average to a Big 12-leading .467 clip for the season. He is also the conference leader with a .568 on-base percentage and ranks second with 28 hits and fourth with a .600 slugging percentage.

• Gardner closed the series going 3-for-5 on Sunday, marking the fourth time already this season Gardner has recorded three or more hits.

• Martin, meanwhile, became the first Red Raider freshman in school history to earn the win in a Big 12 opener last Friday as he tossed six shutout innings in a 5-0 victory over Baylor. Martin, just the first Tech freshman to start a Big 12 opener since current Miami Marlin closer AJ Ramos in 2006, allowed just two hits and struck out four en route to leading the Red Raiders to their second shutout ever in a Big 12 opener.

• The shutout was also the first for Tech against Baylor since the Red Raiders claimed a 1-0 victory on March 5, 1993, in Lubbock.

Tech had not previously shut out Baylor in Waco since recording a 4-0 victory on April 21, 1989.

MARTIN BECOMES FIRST RED RAIDER FRESHMAN TO START A BIG 12 OPENER SINCE RAMOS Davis Martin became the first Red Raider freshman to start a Big 12 opener since current Miami Marlins closer AJ Ramos earned the nod against Texas in 2006 last Friday against Baylor. Ramos tossed five strong innings against Texas, allowing three runs off five hits and three strikeouts in a no-decision. The Longhorns broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the ninth to secure a 4-3 victory. Martin put together quite the performance of his own as he tossed six shutout innings in a 5-0 victory over the Bears. He is the first Red Raider freshman in school history to earn the win in a Big 12 opener. The shutout was the first for the Red Raiders against Baylor in the Big 12 era. Martin, who is now 2-0 this season, was making just the second start of his career.

STEPHEN SMITH NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Stephen Smith was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Feb. 22 after the junior led the Red Raiders to a series win against Milwaukee. This is the first weekly award for Smith, who hit .571 overall (8-for-14) with seven runs scored, four doubles, five RBI, two stolen bases, a .857 slugging percentage and a .684 on-base percentage. He ended the weekend with at least a share of the Big 12 lead in five categories: hits, runs scored, doubles, total bases and on-base percentage. Smith, who had at least one hit in all four games in the series, is the first Red Raider outfielder to receive Big 12 Player of the Week accolades since Adam Kirsch earned the honor on May 19, 2014.

TEXAS TECH RETURNS BULK OF 2015 LINEUP • Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock boasts one of the most experienced lineups of his tenure this season as the Red Raiders return 12 position players from a year ago, including seven starters. It marks the second time in the past three seasons Tech has returned at least seven position starters as the Red Raiders previously brought back eight starters prior to the 2014 campaign.

• In Texas Tech’s group of seven returning position starters, five are seniors with a combined 539 games played over their career.

Eric Gutierrez, Tyler Neslony and Zach Davis all feature three years of experience in a Red Raider uniform while Tyler Floyd and Cory Raley both transfered to Tech following successful junior-college careers.

• Texas Tech is tied with Oklahoma State and Baylor for the most position starters returning heading into this season.

• Texas Tech’s group of returners accounted for 219 of the 269 RBI in 2015 (81 percent) as well as 33 of 41 home runs on the year (80 percent).

• The Red Raiders return their top four hitters (minimum of 50 at-bats) by average from the 2015 season in Cory Raley (.350), Eric Gutierrez (.315), Stephen Smith (.291) and Tyler Neslony (.286). That group combined for 23 home runs and 134 RBI during the 2015 season alone.

HOTTEST TICKET IN TOWN ... AGAIN After selling out season tickets for the first time in program history prior to 2015 season, Texas Tech fans once again scooped up season tickets in record numbers as Tech sold more than 2,400 season tickets prior to Opening Day. Tech sold out of season tickets just a few weeks later, marking the second-straight year where Red Raider fans have purchased over 2,500 season tickets. Tech has ranked among the top 31 schools in the nation over the past 18 years in average attendance per game. Tech closed the 2015 season averaging 3,665 fans per game, a figure that ranked 13th nationally and the third highest in program history.

Cory Raley has helped lead the Red Raiders over the past five games, hitting .455 overall (10-for-22) with a home run and seven RBI.

The Red Raiders will face No. 6 Louisiana-Lafayette, No. 8 Arkansas and No. 12 Houston next weekend during the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic hosted by the Houston Astros. The nearly $1 million project will provide Tech with one of the largest video boards in college baseball as well as a state-of-the-art playing surface. The screen size on the video board will more than double from 15-by-20 feet on the previous model to 48-by-22 feet. Both projects were funded privately through philanthropic contributions and gifts to The Campaign for Fearless Champions.

FLOYD EARNS HIS TEXAS TECH DEGREE PRIOR TO SENIOR SEASON Tyler Floyd entered his senior season with a degree already in hand as the senior graduated this December with a perfect 4.0 gradepoint average in the Texas Tech exercise sports science program. Floyd, who started in 46 games at catcher in 2015, was recognized as the highest-ranking graduate in the ESS program as part of the commencement ceremonies. Floyd was honored late in the 2015 season on the Academic All-Big 12 first team where he was the only conference student-athlete nominated with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Tim Tadlock, the 2014 College Baseball Hall of Fame National Coach of the Year, enters his fourth season as the head coach at Texas Tech after taking the Red Raiders to the College World Series in just his second season while winning over 100 games in his tenure.

Tadlock was named head coach of his alma mater on June 8, 2012, becoming the ninth head coach in program history. Tadlock will enter his 24th year in collegiate baseball in 2016. He owns a collegiate career record of 561-211 in 12 years as a head coach with nine seasons at Grayson County College (435-127) and three at Texas Tech (126-84).

Tadlock and the Red Raiders completed the biggest turnaround in school history and the second biggest turnaround in Big 12 history, going from 26 wins in 2013 to 45 wins in 2014. The season culminated with Texas Tech’s first trip to the College World Series in Omaha.

Tadlock was named the ABCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year as well as the Skip Bertman National Coach of the Year while guiding the Red Raiders to their best season in school history with a 45-21 overall mark and 14-10 Big 12 record.

Tech finished 31-24 overall in Tadlock’s third season in 2015, marking the first time since 2005-06 where the Red Raiders have posted consecutive 30-win seasons. The Red Raiders completed Big 12 play at 13-11 overall, securing a tie for third place in the conference standings, Tech’s highest finish since the 2004 season. It was also the second-straight season where Tech has finished among the top four in the Big 12 standings, a first for the Red Raiders since the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

Tadlock returned to his alma mater for the 2012 season as the program’s associate head coach and recruiting coordinator following six successful seasons as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma. Tadlock produced several of the nation’s top recruiting classes while at Oklahoma, helping lead the Sooners back to the College World Series in 2010, the Sooners first trip to Omaha since 1995.

After beginning his college coaching career as an assistant at Hill College (1993-96) for four seasons, Tadlock became the head coach at Grayson County Junior College, where he led the Vikings to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association World Series titles in 1999 and 2000. During his nine seasons at Grayson, Tadlock posted a 435-127 (.774) overall record while being named National Coach of the Year following both title runs (1999-2000).

After a prep career at Denton High School and two years at Hill College, Tadlock was a two-year starting shortstop for the Red Raiders where he helped lead Texas Tech to its first-ever 40-win season as a senior in 1991 (42-18). Tadlock graduated with his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Texas Tech in May 1992. He also earned a master’s degree in education in August 1994 from the University of Texas at Tyler.

Tadlock and his wife, Kelly, have two children, daughter, Chloe (14), and son, Benjamin (12).

2016 AT A GLANCE Erikson Lanning will be making his sixth start of the season Tuesday evening against Sam Houston State. The southpaw is currently 1-3 this season with a 7.03 ERA as he has totaled 24.1 innings in his six appearances, one of which that has come from the bullpen. Lanning picked up his first career win in his collegiate debut as he allowed just one hit, a walk and a hit-by-pitch over six shutout innings on Feb. 21 against Milwaukee. Milwaukee finished with just two hits off the Tech pitching staff, marking the second consecutive two-hitter tossed by the Red Raiders. Tech had not previously recorded back-to-back two hit outings against an opponent dating back to the 2001 season. The impressive debut marked the first time a Red Raider had earned the win and combined on a shutout in his first collegiate start since Matt Withrow helped Tech trounce Northern Illinois, 13-0, on Feb. 17, 2013. He has gone at least four innings in each of his four starts since then.

LAST TIME OUT Lanning took the loss at Florida State last Tuesday after allowing four runs (three earned) off six hits, three walks and four strikeouts over his 4.2 innings. Tech managed only one run in an eventual 10-1 setback. The loss marked Lanning’s second this year against nationally-ranked opponents, both of which that have come on the road.

LANNING RETURNS TO TEXAS FOR COLLEGE CAREER Lanning’s selection of Texas Tech as a college destination is a return to the Lone Star State for the left-hander. Lanning, who grew up most of his life in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, moved to Woodstock, Georgia, prior to his junior year of high school. The southpaw was recruited heavily by several east coast schools before ultimately choosing Texas Tech.

LANNING, HARPENAU BECOME FIRST FRESHMEN PAIR TO START OPENING WEEKEND Ty Harpenau and Erikson Lanning became the first pair of freshmen to start in two of the first four games of a season dating back to the 2001 season. Harpenau received the ball in the first game of a Feb. 21 doubleheader against Milwaukee before Lanning closed the four-game set the following day.

LAST TIME OUT Damron earned a no-decision last Wednesday as he tossed 3.1 innings in Texas Tech’s 8-4 victory at No. 5 Florida State. Damron allowed just two runs off three hits and a strikeout during that span before giving way to Robert Damron in the fourth inning.
