Texas Tech opens Big 12 play with the first of sixstraight conference games at Rocky Johnson Field as the 19th-ranked Red Raiders host No. 13 Missouri in a two-game series beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday.

ON DECK The Red Raiders continue their six-game homestand to begin Big 12 play next weekend against the 7thranked Oklahoma Sooners. The two-game series runs April 1-2 at Rocky Johnson Field.

LIVE STREAMING Texas Tech will stream every home game free of charge this season at RaiderVision All-Access on the school’s official website, www.texastech.com. Matt Driskill and Harley Chambliss will call the action from Rocky Johnson Field during every Big 12 Conference game as the online broadcast can be heard through the video stream.

THE SERIES Missouri leads the all-time series against Texas Tech, 24-14, including wins in the last four meetings. The Red Raiders are 4-12 all-time against the Tigers in Lubbock with Tech’s last victory at home coming on April 23, 2000 in a 6-5 win.

ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field opened in 2001, giving Texas Tech one of the newest softball facilities in the country.

In the 10 years since its opening, the complex has gone through several changes, including the addition of the team facility down the left field line which opened in 2010, making “The Rock” one of the finest facilities in the country.

DIRECTIONS TO ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field is located on 10th Street near University Medical Center (UMC). The softball complex is adjacent to the McLeod Tennis Center and can be best reached via Texas Tech Parkway.

FROM THE AIRPORT: Take I-27 South from Regis Street and exit west on the Marsha Sharp Freeway. Take the Texas Tech Parkway exit and turn north (right) for a quarter of a mile until you reach the first stop light (10th Street). A LOOK AT MISSOURI...

Missouri enters this weekend riding a school-record 21 game winning streak after opening Big 12 play Wednesday with a sweep of rival Kansas. Tech and the Tigers have played one common opponent this season, California, who defeated Mizzou, 1-0, on Feb. 20 at the San Diego Classic. The Red Raiders topped Cal, 5-4, on Feb. 12 in the ASU Kajikawa Classic. The Tigers were picked to finish second in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma prior to the season.

TECH AGAINST TOP 25 TEAMS UNDER HAYS The Red Raiders have won more than a handful of games against top 25 opponents under secondyear head coach Shanon Hays. Tech is 8-11 against ranked teams under Hays, including 2-0 so far this season. Saturday’s game will mark the first time Tech has faced a ranked opponent under Hays when the Red Raiders are also among the top 25.

RED RAIDERS BOAST MOST WINS IN THE NATION Texas Tech enters this weekend with the most wins (35) among any Division-1 team in the country as the Red Raiders are one of only four teams with at least 30 wins this season, joining Alabama (30-2), Arizona State (30-2), and Florida (30-1).

DENNIS, TALLEY EXPECTED TO START Head coach Shanon Hays will likely go with lefthanders Kelsey Dennis (10-0) and Brittany Talley (11-1) in both games this weekend as the duo has combined to win 21 games between them. Freshman right-hander Kermitria Ward (5-0; 3 saves) and sophomore righty Ashley Brokeshoulder (7-0) will be two of Tech’s likely options out of the bullpen.

REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK Through only 36 games, the 2011 Texas Tech squad has already laid its mark in the school’s record book, setting the single-season records for runs, RBIs, home runs, and games ended via run rule. The Red Raiders have also had two no-hitters this season from freshmen Kermitria Ward and Brittany Talley, while several individuals such as Logan Hall, Cydney Allen, and Sandy James have either broken or matched single-game records already in place. www.texastech.com

TOUGH STRETCH TO START CONFERENCE PLAY Prior to the season, both Oklahoma and Missouri were picked to finish first and second in the Big 12, respectively. Texas Tech, who was picked to finish seventh, will host both schools to open Big 12 play as the Red Raiders will get an early test to see where it stands in the Big 12 ranks. Not to make things easier, the Red Raiders will then face No. 15 Baylor in a midweek doubleheader on April 6 as Tech will open Big 12 play with three-straight series against ranked opponents.

RED RAIDERS BOAST BIG 12’s TOP OFFENSE Texas Tech enters this week’s action with the top offense in the Big 12 Conference as the Red Raiders have posted a .392 average so far. The next highest average in the conference is .354 from Nebraska.

KENNEY LEADS BIG 12 IN DOUBLES After starting the year with nine doubles in Texas Tech’s first 16 games, Mikey Kenney currently leads the Big 12 in the category as the sophomore outfielder has recorded 13 doubles on the season, three more than the conference’s next highest total.

BLEDSOE ENDS CAREER HIGH HITTING STREAK Emily Bledsoe finally snapped her career-long 13 game hitting streak in Tech’s 5-1 victory over Jacksonville. The junior infielder went 0-for-1 at the plate but reached base three times off two walks and a hit by pitch.

RED RAIDERS FACE TOUGH PITCHING IN FLORIDA Heading into the USF The Game Tournament last week in Florida, one thing head coach Shanon Hays thought might benefit Tech down the road was the improved pitching the Red Raiders would see. Tech for the most part saw each school’s top pitcher, including Jacksonville’s Sarah Sigrest, who one-hit Big 12 foe Texas A&M the day before facing Tech.

TECH KEEPS EARNING WEEKLY ACCOLADES Sandy James became the third-consecutive Texas Tech player to be named the Big 12 Player of the Week last week as the sophomore joined Logan Hall and Cydney Allen as weekly accolade honorees. Prior to this season, only four Tech players had earned Player of the Week honors. James hit .667 during the Masked Rider Invitational with six home runs to go along with 20 RBIs, pacing Tech to a doubleheader sweep of New Mexico and a 7-1 week.

WARD’S NO-HITTER TIES SCHOOL RECORD Kermitria Ward tossed her first career no-hitter against Alcorn State on Sunday, becoming just the fifth Tech pitcher to ever record the feat. Ward joins freshman teammate Brittany Talley in the no-hit club as the duo tied the school record set in 1999 for most no-hitters in a single season. The freshman was making her first collegiate start against the Braves after coming out of the bullpen for most of the year.

DENNIS RELIABLE IN THE CIRCLE During Tech’s 25-game homestand, Kelsey Dennis has found her groove in the circle. The junior allowed only eight earned runs in 40.2 innings of work, while posting a team-high four shutouts during that stretch, including three one-hitters.

ONE OF THE FINAL UNBEATENS When Texas Tech’s undefeated streak finally came to an end, the Red Raiders were one of only five teams still without a loss. Washington earned the title of the nation’s final undefeated squad before eventually falling to Texas on March 17.

NEW MEXICO PROVES TO BE TOUGH TEST Tech’s doubleheader against New Mexico ended up being two of Tech’s closest games this season as the Red Raiders took game one, 9-6, before closing the day with a 5-3 win. Tech had previously played only one game (St. John’s on Feb. 25) since the seasonopening Arizona State Kajikawa Tournament that was decided by three runs or less.

JAMES LEAVES HER MARK AGAINST LOBOS Sandy James provided a huge lift to the Tech offense against New Mexico, belting two home runs in the doubleheader while adding eight RBIs. Her four RBIs in each game set a new season high as the sophomore accounted for eight of Tech’s 14 total runs.

PITCHING STAFF SETS SCHOOL RECORDS The Texas Tech pitching staff set several school records during the Red Raider Classic, including most shutouts in a row (5), consecutive hitless innings (11.2), and consecutive shutout innings (27.1). Brittany Talley leads the Red Raiders in wins so far with eight on the year.

HALL NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK After hitting .583 during the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic, junior infielder Logan Hall was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on March 1. In addition to her 7-for-12 weekend at the plate, Hall added three home runs, two of which were grand slams, and 16 total RBIs to help keep Tech undefeated.

AVERAGES SOURING OVER .400 Texas Tech currently has four regular position players with a batting average at .400 or higher. Cydney Allen leads all players with a .460 average followed

by Logan Hall, Raven Richardson, and Emily Bledsoe.

TECH A STAPLE ON ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Five Red Raiders along were named to the all-tournament team of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic while Logan Hall was honored as the tournament’s Top Hitter and Brittany Talley was selected as the Top Pitcher. Cydney Allen, Emily Bledsoe, Kelsey Dennis, Mikey Kenney, and Raven Richardson were all honored on the all-tournament team.

KENNEY PRODUCING IN LEADOFF SPOT Since moving to the leadoff spot to start the year, Mike Kenney has continued to show she is one of the top power hitters in the Big 12 as the sophomore has been one of the main catalysts for the Tech offense this year with her .500 on-base percentage and .387 batting average. She leads the Big 12 with 13 doubles, four more than her total from the entire 2010 season.

DREWRY MATCHES CAREER RBI NUMBERS After only 22 games, Stephanie Drewry is close to matching her RBI total from the previous two seasons combined. The junior currently has 17 RBIs this year, matching her total from the previous two seasons.

HALL NAMED STAT STAR ON ESPN.COM Following her performance at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic, Logan Hall was selected as one of ESPN’s “Stat Stars” for the previous week.

JEANNINE MCHANEY MEMORIAL CLASSIC Texas Tech honored the university’s long-considered founder of women’s athletics with the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Red Raiders faced St. John’s, Northern Illinois, and Wichita State in the three-day event that ran Feb. 25-27 at Rocky Johnson Field. McHaney was the first athletics director when the women’s athletics department was formed in 1975 and remained a top member of the athletics department for the next two decades. She passed away in 1994.

HALL BOOSTS MIDDLE OF THE ORDER To say Logan Hall had a successful Texas Tech Invitational might be an understatement. The junior infielder hit .611 at the plate (11-for-18) with 11 RBIs, three of which came off a three-run home run against Utah Valley in the weekend finale. Hall leads Tech with 40 RBIs on the year and has recorded a .500 average, the highest on the team.

SPEAKING OF HALL...

Logan Hall began the Texas Tech Invitational with a memorable performance against Utah Valley in the early game on Friday. The junior smashed two triples in the game, tying Denise Jackson for the school record that had not been matched since the 1997 season against New Mexico.

HOME RUN WATCH BEGINS FOR KENNEY Mikey Kenney’s two home run day to close the Texas Tech Invitational moved the sophomore into a tie for fourth on the school’s career homer chart. She is now tied with Jennifer Bowers (2005-08) with 17 career dingers and is three from tying Jennifer Corking (2005-08) for third all-time. After matching the single-season record with 15 home runs as a freshman, it’s not a stretch to think Kenney could some day match Kim Martinez’ school record of 27.

2011 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL RED RAIDERS END LONG HOMESTAND The Red Raiders ended a 25-game homestand on March 13 that began with the Texas Tech Invitational on Feb. 18. Tech played at home for nearly a month, hosting four separate tournaments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before traveling to Florida for the USF The Game Tournament. The homestand was the longest in school history.

ALLEN MAKES SUCCESSFUL DEBUT After only one weekend in a Red Raider uniform, Cydney Allen proved why she was one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the nation coming out of Salt Lake Community College. The junior catcher had a hit in each of Tech’s game at the Kajikawa Classic and had at least two hits in four of five games.

Allen finished with a .556 average off a team-high 10 hits, including a two-run home run against Indiana as part of her five RBIs on the week.

FOX NOT ONLY FAMILY MEMBER IN TOP 25 Texas Tech assistant coach Kristy Fox is not the only member of the Fox family ranked in the top 25. Fox’s younger sister, Kellie Fox, is the starting shortstop for 7th-ranked UCLA as only a freshman.

BLEDSOE DELIVERS TOP-FIVE MOMENT Emily Bledsoe has had many big hits in her Texas Tech career, but few may have been bigger than her two-run walkoff home run against Appalachian State that sent Tech to a 10-9 come-from-behind victory. The junior described the hit as a “top five moment” during the following week’s media session.

TALLEY TALLIES UP THE RESULTS For being only a freshman, Brittany Talley had a lot of responsibility on her left arm in Arizona. The Little Elm, Texas native got the start against both No. 16 BYU and No. 12 Cal, picking up the win against the Golden Bears. Talley was an out away from a complete game win over BYU before the Cougars responded with a game-tying two-run home run.

After going 5.1 innings against Cal, Talley returned to the circle later in the night to close the Indiana game, going the final 2.2 innings to earn the save.

BYU GAME MARKS A FIRST FOR TECH Prior to last weekend, Texas Tech had never gone to extra innings in its season opener. The Red Raiders were an out away from ending the game in the seventh, but instead won, 7-5, in nine innings.

EIGHT STARTERS RETURN FROM LAST YEAR With eight starters returning in the field from the 2010 squad that advanced to the NCAA Stanford Regional, the Red Raiders should have a wealth of experience to rely on when Big 12 play begins. Tech lost Leah Legler, Danielle Matthews, and pitcher Ashly Jacobs from last season’s 38-18 team.

ALL-BIG 12 TRIO RETURNS Tech’s trio of All-Big 12 second team selections from a year ago in Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney all return to the diamond this spring. Bledsoe and Hall will both be juniors, while Kenney will be entering only her sophomore season. The trio combined for 31 home runs and 122 RBI last season, giving Tech three reliable bats in the lineup.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT DREWRY With all the individual successes of the Kajikawa Classic, the play of Stephanie Drewry should not be forgotten. The junior outfielder went 2-for-3 at the plate against Appalachian State and drove in a career-high five RBIs while posting a .467 average.

NO SENIORS, NO PROBLEM The Red Raiders will have one noticeable difference in their roster than every other school in the Big 12 - Tech has no seniors on its 2011 roster. Instead, second-year head coach Shanon Hays will rely on an experienced group of 11 juniors.

KERM PROVING TO BE SOLID RELIEVER Freshman Kermitria Ward proved to be a reliable arm out of the bullpen in Arizona, picking up the win against BYU before earning the save against Cal. The Texas 4A Player of the Year as a high school senior, Ward recorded a 2.74 ERA in 7.2 innings during her collegiate debut.

RED RAIDERS TURN TO NEW ARMS Following the graduation of former standout pitcher Ashly Jacobs, Tech will look at several new faces in the circle, including junior college transfer Kelsey Dennis and freshmen Brittany Talley and Kermitria Ward. Ashley Brokeshoulder and Karli Merlich both return to the circle as well, giving Tech five pitchers for the season. Ward will also split time as an outfielder and will occasionally pinch run.

HAYS CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL BIRTHDAY Tech’s wins over No. 12 Cal and Indiana was no ordinary day at the park for head coach Shanon Hays.

The second-year coach was celebrating his birthday and received a nice gift in Tech’s second victory over a ranked opponent of the weekend.

Tech will host four-straight weekends of round robin tournaments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before completing non-conference play in Florida for the UCF Tournament. “THE ROCK” SEES NEW ADDITION Fans entering Rocky Johnson Field this season will see a new addition just off the warning track - a new outfield wall. A black, padded wall replaced the chain-link fence that had been in place since the park’s opening in 2001. The wall also extends down the outfield foul lines.

RYBA TO REDSHIRT 2011 SEASON Despite appearing on Tech’s roster, junior infielder Melissa Ryba will redshirt the 2011 season in order to comply with NCAA transfer rules. Ryba spent the past two seasons at Northern Colorado.

TECH SIGNS FIVE IN FALL PERIOD Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays announced the signing of five future student-athletes to national letters of intent this fall as Hannah Bell, Cara Custer, Chandler Moore, Adriana Perez and Katelyn Williams will all join the program for the 2012 season.

2010 SEASON IN REVIEW u Texas Tech returned to a NCAA Regional last season for the first time in 10 seasons, eventually falling to Hawaii in the championship game of the regional, held on the Stanford campus in Palo Alto, Calif. HEAD COACH SHANON HAYS • 2nd Season • Lubbock Christian ‘91 No stranger to building programs, Shanon Hays took over as head coach of the Texas Tech softball team in 2010 and immediately led the Red Raiders back to the NCAA postseason in only his first season, laying the groundwork for a program on the rise.

The fifth head coach since the resurrection of the program in 1996, Hays helped guide the Red Raiders to a 23-win improvement last year from the 2009 season, while eventually advancing all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Stanford Regional.

Under Hays, all facets of the game improved as the Tech hitters snapped the school record for runs, slugging percentage, and home runs in a season, while the pitching staff boasted its lowest earnedrun average since 2001 and the Tech defense committed its fewest errors in school history.

Most importantly, Tech’s win-loss record received the biggest improvement under Hays, whose 38-18 record in his first season is the best finish for a firstyear head coach in program history. Three Tech players - Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney, were named to the All-Big 12 second team following the regular season.

appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008.

The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugural season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship, earning Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his two-year tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national championship again in 2009. Known as a top-flight recruiter and motivator, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure.

Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 19992001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s).

Prior to accepting the softball position at LCU, Hays was the associate head men’s basketball coach at the University of Houston in 2005-06. Working under head coach Tom Penders, Hays found his knack as a recruiter, helping sign one of the nation’s top 15 recruiting classes in only his first season where the Cougars won 18 games and advanced to a national tournament for the first time in three years.

Hays began playing fastpitch softball as a youth, along with baseball and basketball, because his father, the legendary Texas Tech and LCU baseball coach Larry Hays, also played fastpitch softball. Hays, the elder, whose 1,509 wins were good enough for fourth on the all-time collegiate baseball list, retired as Tech’s all-time winningest coach prior to the 2009 season.

In a rare twist, Larry Hays succeeded his son at LCU for one season prior to Daren Hays, Shanon’s brother and former Tech assistant baseball coach and director of operations, accepted the position to lead the Lady Chaps beginning with the 2011 season.

Shanon Hays began and ended his college career at LCU, graduating with his degree in Education in 1991 after also matriculating at Texas Tech and competing from 1988 - 1990 for his father on the Red Raiders’ baseball team. He competed for LCU prior to that in both baseball and on the basketball teams.

He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, his two sons, Hunter, Heath, and his daughter, Hampton.

Record at Tech: 73-19 (2nd Season) Career Record: 187-39 (3rd Seasons)

In each coaching stop, Hays left as the winningest head coach in school history according to winning percentage. He ended his collegiate basketball tenure with a 107-42 record as a head coach.
