Following a 12 day break, Texas Tech closes the regular season in College Station, Texas against No. 18 Texas A&M in a two-game series beginning at 6 p.m. Friday evening at the Aggie Softball Complex. ON DECK The Red Raiders will learn their postseason fate Sunday evening as NCAA Regional selections will be announced at 9 p.m. on ESPNU. The regional round runs May 20-22 at various campus sites across the country. LONG BREAK MARKS A FIRST FOR TECH Texas Tech’s 12 day break in between games due to finals matched the school’s longest streak in school history set only a year ago. The one difference, however, is that Tech has always returned from its break at the Big 12 Championship, which will not be played this year for the first time in league history. Tech won its first game back from its break last year, defeating Kansas, 5-3, in Oklahoma City. TECH STILL IN THE TOP 30 OF THE RPI Texas Tech remained in the top 30 of this week’s ratings percentage index (RPI) as the Red Raiders dropped two spots to No. 30 in the rankings. Tech has been in the top 30 each week since the original poll debuted, climbing as high as No. 27 several weeks ago. The Red Raiders have already played 12 teams ranked in the top 50 of the poll, with eight of those being teams in the top 25. Tech went 5-0 against non-conference opponents in the top 50.

ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field opened in 2001, giving Texas Tech one of the newest softball facilities in the country. In the 10 years since its opening, the complex has gone through several changes, including the addition of the team facility down the left field line which opened in 2010, making “The Rock” one of the finest facilities in the country. DIRECTIONS TO ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field is located on 10th Street near University Medical Center (UMC). The softball complex is adjacent to the McLeod Tennis Center and can be best reached via Texas Tech Parkway. FROM THE AIRPORT: Take I-27 South from Regis Street and exit west on the Marsha Sharp Freeway. Take the Texas Tech Parkway exit and turn north (right) for a quarter of a mile until you reach the first stop light (10th Street). Turn back east (right) and Rocky Johnson Field will be on the right side.

A LOOK AT TEXAS A&M Riding a five-game winning streak, Texas A&M enters this weekend’s series in third place of the Big 12 standings, boasting a 39-13 overall record and 11-5 mark during league play. The Aggies have swept Kansas and Oklahoma State in the past two weeks, while adding a midweek win over Texas. A&M is hitting .283 on the year, ninth in the conference, while the pitching staff, led by Melissa Dumezich, has posted a 1.89 earned-run average, fourth in the league. AGGIES BOAST 22-GAME HOME WINNING STREAK Texas Tech will be trying to snap Texas A&M’s 22 game home winning streak this weekend, the second-longest active streak in the country. The Aggies are a perfect 20-0 at home this season, while averaging 845 fans per game. RED RAIDERS BOAST NATION’S TOP AVERAGE Texas Tech continues to boast the nation’s top batting average entering this weekend as the Red Raiders are hitting .355 with two games remaining. Eight of Tech’s nine projected starters are hitting above .300 with the lone exception being Holley Gentsch who is hitting .289 on the year. Tennessee has the next highest average at .352. TALLEY’S SHUTOUT MARKS A FIRST Prior to Texas Tech’s 5-0 victory in the series finale at Nebraska, the Red Raiders had not shutout the Huskers in Lincoln during the 16-game series between the two schools. Brittany Talley surrendered only six hits in the shutout performance, her fifth of the season and second during Big 12 play. The shutout was also only the second all-time in the series, which is set to end this year with Nebraska heading to the Big 10 Conference next season. SHUTOUT ALSO MARKS ANOTHER FIRST Brittany Talley’s shutout of the Huskers gave the Red Raiders 16 on the year, the school’s most since Amanda Renfro single-handily threw 16 on her own in 2001. Renfro help set the school record several years earlier as the Tech pitching staff posted 19 during the 1998 season. www.texastech.com

BLEDSOE SUCCESSFUL IN LEADOFF SPOT Since moving to the leadoff spot prior to the second game against Baylor, Emily Bledsoe has hit .417 with hits in 10 of 11 games. The junior has reached base to start the game in nine of those games as well with seven of them coming from hits and the other two resulting from hit by pitches. TECH POSTS ONLY SECOND 40-WIN SEASON Texas Tech’s 40-12 record entering this weekend marks only the second 40-win season in school history as the 1998 team finished 45-19. The Red Raiders are on pace currently to record the highest winning percentage in school history, which was also set in 1998. TECH ENDS SEASON WITH ATTENDANCE HIGHS Over 1,600 fans crowded Rocky Johnson Field last weekend as the Red Raiders closed its home schedule against 5th-ranked Texas. Tech opened the weekend with 837 fans on Friday night before 861 fans returned the following day for the series finale. It marked the fourth and second largest crowds in school history. JAMES TIES SINGLE-SEASON HOME RUN MARK Sandy James’ fourth inning solo home run in the series opener against Texas gave the sophomore 15 on the season, tying the Tech single-season record currently held by teammate Mikey Kenney (2010) and Kim Martinez (1997). NON-CONFERENCE AND THE RPI Texas Tech played five schools on its non-conference schedule that appear in the top 55 of the RPI. The Arizona State Kajikawa Tournament boasts three teams in that group as Cal is No. 7 nationally in the poll while Indiana is one spot below Tech at No. 29 and BYU is 42nd overall. Jacksonville and Chattanooga, two of Tech’s opponents from the USF The Game Tournament, are 49th and 50th in the poll as well. Tech went 5-0 in those games. SURPASSING LAST SEASON Texas Tech has already surpassed its win total from the 2010 season that ended with a berth to an NCAA

RED RAIDERS SECOND IN THE NATION IN WINS Texas Tech is currently second in the nation in total wins with 39 as No. 3 Alabama is the only squad, through games on Sunday, to reach the 40 win mark. The Crimson Tide is 41-5 on the year.

MIDDLE OF THE ORDER SETS RBI STANDARD Tech’s middle of the lineup consisting of Logan Hall, Sandy James and Cydney Allen are believed to be the first trio of players to all reach 50 RBIs in a single season. James leads the group with a Big 12 leading 56 RBIs, while Hall trails closely behind with 51 of her own. Allen joined the group against Kansas, driving in two runs, her 51st of the year.

UNCOMMON ERRORS PLAGUE TECH Part of Tech’s struggles in its midweek series against Baylor stemmed from miscues in the field as the Red Raiders combined to post five errors. Tech entered the doubleheader without an error in each of its last five games and eight of the last nine games overall.

REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK Through 52 games, the 2011 Texas Tech squad has already laid its mark in the school’s record book, setting the single-season records for runs, RBIs, home runs, and games ended via run rule. The Red Raiders have also had two no-hitters this season from freshmen Kermitria Ward and Brittany Talley, while several individuals such as Logan Hall, Cydney Allen, and Sandy James have either broken or matched single-game records already in place. KANSAS LOSS MARKS A FIRST The Red Raiders were previously 19-0 this season when leading after five innings before Kansas rallied with a seven-run sixth inning Wednesday to take the first game of a doubleheader, 9-5. FIRST INNING SUCCESS The Red Raiders are 27-4 when scoring in the first inning this season and 31-3 when scoring before their opponents. Tech is 8-7 this year when its opponent scores in the first inning. JAMES TIES SINGLE-GAME RBI MARK Sandy James almost single-handily defeated Iowa State in the series finale as the sophomore tied the Tech single-game record with eight RBIs in the game. James broke a 2-2 tie in the second with her second grand slam of the season before coming back to the plate later to deliver a two-run double and a two-run single to continue Tech’s offensive output. OFFENSE COMES TO LIFE AT IOWA STATE The Red Raiders broke the school mark for most runs in Big 12 play in both games against Iowa State, highlighted by a 16-5 victory in the series finale. It marked Tech’s most runs in league play since scoring 13 at Oklahoma State on May 5, 2007. Tech finished with 31 runs in the series, its most in a conference series all-time. PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE The Red Raiders have already broken the school record for single-season walks as Tech has drawn 174 thus far, breaking the previous high of 155 set in 1997. Sandy James leads the team with 31 base on balls taken so far, which marks the most for any Tech player since Elyssa Sigala took a school-record 40 in 2004. PUTTING THE PRESSURE ON Texas Tech swiped six bags at Iowa State, including five in the series finale, matching the season high. Emily Bledsoe and Mikey Kenney both stole two

KENNEY MOVES TO FOURTH ON HOME RUN LIST Mikey Kenney’s seventh inning home run in the series opener against Baylor moved the sophomore into sole possession of fourth on the school’s career chart. Kenney now trails Jennifer Corkin (2005-08) by three homers for third place. Kim Martinez owns the school record with 27 home runs in the 1997 and 1999 seasons, followed by Paula Workman (19972000) with 23 career dingers. HAYS MAKES CHANGES TO THE LINEUP Prior to the Oklahoma series, Mikey Kenney had led off every game for the Red Raider this season, but Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays made his first significant change of the year, inserting Logan Hall into the leadoff spot. The second-year Tech skipper made another change in the second game against Baylor, moving Emily Bledsoe to the top of the lineup. Since the change, Mikey Kenney has moved to the No. 3 hole primarily. EFFICIENCY IS TECH’S NAME ON THE BASES The Red Raiders are currently fourth in the Big 12 for stolen bases as Tech has swiped 64 bases to this point. The more impressive part, however, is that Tech has only been caught stealing six times, a stat that is tied with Iowa State for fewest in the league. The Cyclones have been successful in 26 of 32 attempts this year, giving Tech a slight advantage in success percentage. Mikey Kenney is a perfect 14-14 this season to lead the Red Raiders. GENTSCH, TONGATE SWINGING HOT BATS Since Big 12 play began, catchers Holley Gentsch and Randi Tongate have combined to go 12-for-37 (.324 avg.) at the plate as both players have seen action behind the plate. Gentsch added her first home run of the season last weekend at Iowa State. BIG 12 BOASTS EIGHT RANKED SQUADS With eight schools currently ranked in the top 25, the Big 12 might be the toughest conference in the country this season as No. 3 Texas (NFCA) leads the pack followed by No. 12 Nebraska, No. 14 Missouri, No. 15 Oklahoma, No. 16 Baylor, No. 19 Oklahoma State, No. 22 Texas A&M, and No. 25 Texas Tech. The Big 12 has the most school ranked in the top 25 than any conference in the nation, leading both the SEC and Pac-10 who both have seven. SARTINI PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Texas Tech head coach promoted assistant coach Aly Sartini to the title of associate head coach on March 31. Sartini, in her second year at Tech, directs the Tech pitching staff and outfielders, while also assisting in the program’s recruiting efforts as well as academic and travel matters.

2011 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL FANS PACK THE ROCK Texas Tech’s 1,248 fans in attendance during the series finale against Missouri easily broke the school record of 853 set on March 28 last year against Iowa State. Three of the five largest crowds in school history have come in Shanon Hays’ two-year tenure and fans are encouraged to once again pack Rocky Johnson Field again this weekend against Oklahoma. RED RAIDERS FACE TOUGH PITCHING IN FLORIDA Heading into the USF The Game Tournament in Florida, one thing head coach Shanon Hays thought might benefit Tech down the road was the improved pitching the Red Raiders would see. Tech for the most part saw each school’s top pitcher, including Jacksonville’s Sarah Sigrest, who one-hit Big 12 foe Texas A&M the day before facing Tech. PATIENCE HELPS TECH SET SCHOOL RECORD In Tech’s first game in Clearwater, Fla., the Red Raiders took advantage of 18 Colorado State walks at the plate, shattering the school record of 11 that was previously set in 2007 against Oklahoma State. WARD’S NO-HITTER TIES SCHOOL RECORD Kermitria Ward tossed her first career no-hitter against Alcorn State on March 13, becoming just the fifth Tech pitcher to ever record the feat. Ward joins freshman teammate Brittany Talley in the no-hit club as the duo tied the school record set in 1999 for most no-hitters in a single season. The freshman was making her first collegiate start against the Braves after coming out of the bullpen for most of the year. TECH KEEPS EARNING WEEKLY ACCOLADES Sandy James became the third-consecutive Texas Tech player on March 15 to be named the Big 12 Player of the Week as the sophomore joined Logan Hall and Cydney Allen as weekly accolade honorees. Prior to this season, only four Tech players had earned Player of the Week honors. James hit .667 during the Masked Rider Invitational with six home runs to go along with 20 RBIs, pacing Tech to a doubleheader sweep of New Mexico and a 7-1 week. DENNIS RELIABLE IN THE CIRCLE During Tech’s 25-game homestand, Kelsey Dennis has found her groove in the circle. The junior allowed only eight earned runs in 40.2 innings of work, while posting a team-high four shutouts during that stretch, including three one-hitters. ONE OF THE FINAL UNBEATENS When Texas Tech’s undefeated streak came to an end on March 11, the Red Raiders were one of only five teams still without a loss. Washington earned the title of the nation’s final undefeated squad before eventually falling to Texas on March 17. JAMES LEAVES HER MARK AGAINST LOBOS Sandy James provided a huge lift to the Tech offense against New Mexico, belting two home runs in the doubleheader while adding eight RBIs. Her four RBIs in each game set a new season high as the sophomore accounted for eight of Tech’s 14 total runs. PITCHING STAFF SETS SCHOOL RECORDS The Texas Tech pitching staff set several school records during the Red Raider Classic, including most shutouts in a row (5), consecutive hitless innings (11.2), and consecutive shutout innings (27.1). HALL NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK After hitting .583 during the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic, junior infielder Logan Hall was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on March 1. In addition to her 7-for-12 weekend at the plate, Hall added three home runs, two of which were grand slams, and 16 total RBIs to help keep Tech undefeated. TECH A STAPLE ON ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Five Red Raiders along were named to the all-tournament team of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic while Logan Hall was honored as the tournament’s Top Hitter and Brittany Talley was selected as the Top Pitcher. Cydney Allen, Emily Bledsoe, Kelsey Dennis, Mikey Kenney, and Raven Richardson were all honored on the all-tournament team. DREWRY MATCHES CAREER RBI NUMBERS After only 22 games, Stephanie Drewry is close to matching her RBI total from the previous two seasons combined. The junior currently has 17 RBIs this year, matching her total from the previous two seasons. HALL NAMED STAT STAR ON ESPN.COM Following her performance at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic, Logan Hall was selected as one of ESPN’s “Stat Stars” for the previous week. The website lists the top performers from the previous week each Monday or Tuesday on its College Sports page. HALL BOOSTS MIDDLE OF THE ORDER To say Logan Hall had a successful Texas Tech Invitational might be an understatement. The junior infielder hit .611 at the plate (11-for-18) with 11 RBIs, three of which came off a three-run home run against Utah Valley in the weekend finale. Hall leads Tech with 40 RBIs on the year and has recorded a .500 average, the highest on the team. SPEAKING OF HALL... Logan Hall began the Texas Tech Invitational with a memorable performance against Utah Valley in the early game on Friday. The junior smashed two triples in the game, tying Denise Jackson for the school record that had not been matched since the 1997 season against New Mexico.

ALLEN MAKES SUCCESSFUL DEBUT After only one weekend in a Red Raider uniform, Cydney Allen proved why she was one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the nation coming out of Salt Lake Community College. 2011 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL DON’T FORGET ABOUT DREWRY With all the individual successes of the Kajikawa Classic, the play of Stephanie Drewry should not be forgotten. The junior outfielder went 2-for-3 at the plate against Appalachian State and drove in a career-high five RBIs while posting a .467 average.

HALL RETURNS TO HOME STATE Logan Hall returned to her home state for the Kajikawa Classic. Hall, a native of Tucson, Ariz., played one season at Pima Community College before transferring to Tech for the 2010 season where she was an All-Big 12 second team selection.

KERM PROVING TO BE SOLID RELIEVER Freshman Kermitria Ward proved to be a reliable arm out of the bullpen in Arizona, picking up the win against BYU before earning the save against Cal. The Texas 4A Player of the Year as a high school senior, Ward recorded a 2.74 ERA in 7.2 innings during her collegiate debut.

HOME SWEET HOME The Red Raiders will play 35 of their 54 games at Rocky Johnson Field this season, beginning with the Texas Tech Invitational, Feb. 18-20. Tech will host four-straight weekends of round robin tournaments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before completing non-conference play in Florida for the UCF Tournament. The Red Raiders begin Big 12 play with their first five conference games at home as Missouri, Oklahoma, and Baylor all travel to Lubbock. Tech will also have home series against Kansas and in-state rival Texas. Tech’s 35 home games is the most in school history.

HAYS CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL BIRTHDAY Tech’s wins over No. 12 Cal and Indiana was no ordinary day at the park for head coach Shanon Hays. The second-year coach was celebrating his birthday and received a nice gift in Tech’s second victory over a ranked opponent of the weekend. BYU GAME MARKS A FIRST FOR TECH Prior to last weekend, Texas Tech had never gone to extra innings in its season opener. The Red Raiders were an out away from ending the game in the seventh, but instead won, 7-5, in nine innings. EARLY TEST SHOULD HELP LATE The Red Raiders trip to Arizona should pay dividends when Big 12 play begins as Tech faced two of the top teams in the nation in BYU and Cal. The conference currently has eight schools ranked among the top 25 nationally. ALLEN FACES FORMER SCHOOL Junior catcher Cydney Allen saw a few familiar faces in the opposite dugout during Tech’s season-opener against BYU. Allen appeared in 11 games for the Cougars as a freshman in 2009 before transferring to Salt Lake Community College in 2010. She finished 3-for-5 in the game, while also scoring a run.

HAYS ADDS SIX NEWCOMERS Even with most of his roster from a year ago back, Tech head coach Shanon Hays added seven newcomers this spring, most notably junior college transfers Cydney Allen and Kelsey Dennis and freshman Kermitria Ward. Freshmen Brittany Talley and Taylor Powell along with sophomore transfer Sandy James will add to the list of newcomers. FROM ACROSS THE NATION Nearly half of Texas Tech’s 21 players are originally from a state other than Texas as only 11 players hail from the Lone Star State. RYBA TO REDSHIRT 2011 SEASON Despite appearing on Tech’s roster, junior infielder Melissa Ryba will redshirt the 2011 season in order to comply with NCAA transfer rules. Ryba spent the past two seasons at Northern Colorado. TECH SIGNS FIVE IN FALL PERIOD Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays announced the signing of five future student-athletes to national letters of intent this fall as Hannah Bell, Cara Custer, Chandler Moore, Adriana Perez and Katelyn Williams will all join the program for the 2012 season.

No stranger to building programs, Shanon Hays took over as head coach of the Texas Tech softball team in 2010 and immediately led the Red Raiders back to the NCAA postseason in only his first season, laying the groundwork for a program on the rise. The fifth head coach since the resurrection of the program in 1996, Hays helped guide the Red Raiders to a 23-win improvement last year from the 2009 season, while eventually advancing all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Stanford Regional. Under Hays, all facets of the game improved as the Tech hitters snapped the school record for runs, slugging percentage, and home runs in a season, while the pitching staff boasted its lowest earned-run average since 2001 and the Tech defense committed its fewest errors in school history. Most importantly, Tech’s win-loss record received the biggest improvement under Hays, whose 38-18 record in his first season is the best finish for a first-year head coach in program history. Three Tech players - Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney, were named to the All-Big 12 second team following the regular season. Tech’s transformation should come as little surprise after Hays’ work at Lubbock Christian. Following his appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008. The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugural season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship, earning Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his two-year tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national championship again in 2009. Known as a top-flight recruiter and motivator, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure. Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 1999-2001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s). Prior to accepting the softball position at LCU, Hays was the associate head men’s basketball coach at the University of Houston in 2005-06. Working under head coach Tom Penders, Hays found his knack as a recruiter, helping sign one of the nation’s top 15 recruiting classes in only his first season where the Cougars won 18 games and advanced to a national tournament for the first time in three years. In addition to his time at the Division-I level, Hays has also made stops as the head coach at Frank Phillips College (1995-96), Abilene Christian (1996-99), and Midland College (2002-03), while also serving as the Abilene Christian athletics director from 2001-02. Hays began playing fastpitch softball as a youth, along with baseball and basketball, because his father, the legendary Texas Tech and LCU baseball coach Larry Hays, also played fastpitch softball. Hays, the elder, whose 1,509 wins were good enough for fourth on the all-time collegiate baseball list, retired as Tech’s all-time winningest coach prior to the 2009 season. In a rare twist, Larry Hays succeeded his son at LCU for one season prior to Daren Hays, Shanon’s brother and former Tech assistant baseball coach and director of operations, accepted the position to lead the Lady Chaps beginning with the 2011 season. Shanon Hays began and ended his college career at LCU, graduating with his degree in Education in 1991 after also matriculating at Texas Tech and competing from 1988 - 1990 for his father on the Red Raiders’ baseball team. He competed for LCU prior to that in both baseball and on the basketball teams. He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, his two sons, Hunter, Heath, and his daughter, Hampton.
