SPRING STORYLINES u Texas Tech begins the first step in preparations for the 2017 season Saturday morning when the Red Raiders host their first spring practice inside Jones AT&T Stadium. The Red Raiders will host 12 practices, a pair of open scrimmages and the annual Spring Game between March and April. u

Texas Tech fans throughout the state of Texas will have a chance to see the Red Raiders in action this spring as the program will host open scrimmages in both Midland and Lubbock as well as its Spring Game which will be held April 1 at The Star in Frisco. The Midland scrimmage is slated for March 25 at Grande Communications Stadium while “Saturday Night Lights” in Lubbock is set for April 8 inside Jones AT&T Stadium.

u

Texas Tech will utilize its new playing surface at Jones AT&T Stadium this Saturday as construction crews recently installed a new FieldTurf product. Fans will notice a few slight changes in the new surface as the size of the Double T at midfield will be enlarged to cover the entire distance between the hash marks while the “Texas Tech” and “Red Raiders” painted in the endzones will be in a new vertical font.

u

The phrase “Earn the Double T” will be popular from the Tech coaching staff and players this spring as the iconic logo has been banned from the Football Training Facility. Kliff Kingsbury and his staff stripped the logo from all workout gear and helmets, insisting the Red Raiders earn back the right to wear the Double T after a disappointing 2016 season.

u

The Red Raiders will have over 80 players on the roster participating in spring practices thanks in part to 12 mid-year enrollees. Texas Tech’s group of 12 mid-year enrollees marks the most in the Big 12 and the most in Kliff Kingsbury’s tenure.

u

Texas Tech brings back the bulk of its 2016 roster this spring highlighted by nine starters returning on offense and seven on the defensive side of the ball. In all, Texas Tech returns 79 percent of its overall scoring from a year ago.

u

The Red Raiders’ now sophomore class received quite a bit of experience as freshmen in 2016 as Texas Tech easily led the country with 4,429 snaps played by true freshmen, according to research by Pro Football Focus.

MARCH 25 - MIDLAND

APRIL 1 - THE STAR IN FRISCO

APRIL 8 - LUBBOCK

The Red Raiders will travel to Grande Communications Stadium in Midland for the fifth-consecutive year on March 25. The annual trip to Midland draws thousands of Red Raider fans in the Permian Basin, one of the largest areas of Texas Tech alumni in the state. In addition to the open scrimmage, the Red Raider baseball team will also travel to Midland on April 18 to face New Mexico State at Security Bank Ballpark.

Texas Tech will be the first collegiate football program to host an event at The Star in Frisco on April 1 when the Red Raiders hold their annual Spring Game inside the Ford Center. The state-of-the art complex serves as the world headquarters and practice facility for the Dallas Cowboys. The Spring Game is slated for a 3 p.m. start inside the Ford Center, a 12,000 seat indoor stadium that opened in 2016 as par of The Star headquarters.

“Saturday Night Lights” returns to Jones AT&T Stadium on April 8 as the Red Raiders will close the spring in front of their hometown fans. The scrimmage will be the finale of the best-ofthree series between the offense and defense. The event is free to all fans and will feature an autograph session immediately following the scrimmage. Texas Tech will host a “Pick Your Seat” event prior to the scrimmage as well.
