Texas Tech will open Big 12 Conference play Thursday when the Red Raiders host Kansas inside Jones AT&T Stadium. Justin Kutcher will have the call on FOX Sports 1 while Petros Papadakis will provide the color commentary.

The Red Raiders are coming off a 59-45 victory over Louisiana Tech to close out the non-conference slate. Texas Tech, backed by 470 passing yards from Patrick Mahomes II and 123 yards on the ground from Demarcus Felton, racked up 666 total yards of offense against the Bulldogs en route to improving to 2-0 at home.

Texas Tech has historically dominated the series against Kansas as the Red Raiders are 16-1 all-time against the Jayhawks. Tech enters the Thursday night contest with wins in each of its last nine games against Kansas, including a 30-20 victory last season in Lawrence.

This is the fourth time under Kliff Kingsbury where Texas Tech has played on a Thursday night. The Red Raiders are 17-18 all-time in Thursday games, including a 2-1 mark under Kingsbury. It is the first Thursday night game at home for the Red Raiders since Tech topped No. 24 TCU, 20-10, early in the 2013 campaign.

The Red Raiders are 12-8 all-time in Big 12 openers with wins in three of the last five years. Texas Tech and Kansas last opened conference play against each other in 2011 with the Red Raiders pulling off a 45-34 victory in Lawrence.

Texas Tech is averaging close to 100 passing yards per game more than any other team in the country. Backed by 1,493 yards from Patrick Mahomes II, the national leader in both passing yards per game and total offense per game, the Red Raiders are averaging 547.7 yards per game through the air which is nearly 100 yards more than second-place California (459.3).

Demarcus Felton recorded the first 100-yard rushing performance by a Red Raider this season against Louisiana Tech as he carrried 16 times for 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the 59-45 victory. He is averaging an impressive 7.1 yards per carry through three games this season.

MAHOMES OFF TO MEMORABLE START TO 2016

GILES COMING OFF 186 YARDS AGAINST LA TECH

Patrick Mahomes II enters Thursday night’s Big 12 opener as the nation’s leader in passing yards per game and total offense per game. Mahomes has thrown for 1,493 yards through just three games this season, the most for a quarterback nationally dating back to 2000. Mahomes’ impressive start comes after he played just over one half in Texas Tech’s season opener against Stephen F. Austin.

Jonathan Giles had a breakout game against Louisiana Tech as he finished with six catches for 186 yards and three touchdowns. Each of Giles’ three touchdown receptions, which were the most for a Red Raider since Bradley Marquez against Baylor in 2014, went for at least 30 yards while his 186 yards were the most for a Red Raider since Darrin Moore totaled the same amount against Baylor in 2012.
