RED RAIDERS 1-0 TO OPEN WELLS ERA Texas Tech opened the Matt Wells era in dominating fashion this past weekend after a 45-10 victory over Montana State. It marked the largest margin of victory by a Red Raider head coach making his debut since DeWitt Weaver led Tech to a 46-7 win over West Texas State in 1951. Weaver was only the fifth head coach in program history. n The Red Raiders were impressive in their debut under Wells, racking up 691 yards of total offense while limiting Montana State to only 289 yards of its own. The victory marked the 20th-consecutive year Texas Tech has opened its home slate with a win, the longest such streak in school history. n

GREAT START FOR NEW-LOOK DEFENSE The Red Raider defense made quite the first impression to start the 2019 season as Texas Tech limited Montana State to only 289 yards of total offense, the fewest for an opponent in a season opener since Northwestern State was held to just 84 yards in 2011. n The Red Raiders got off the field quickly to start the game, forcing Montana State into a 3-and-out in each of its first four drives. Texas Tech totaled eight 3-and-outs on the afternoon, which is a key component of defensive coordinator Keith Patterson’s attack. Tech was particularly strong on third downs as Montana State converted only 2-of-16 for first downs. n

Matt Wells entered this season stating the Red Raiders were going to not only throw the ball well as usual but also emphasize the running game. Texas Tech proved that against Montana State as the Red Raiders totaled 255 yards on the ground, their most in a season opener dating back to the start of the 2000 campaign. n Armand Shyne led the way for Texas Tech, rushing for 125 yards and a touchdown in his Red Raider debut. It was Shyne’s third career game with 100 or more rushing yards dating back to his time at Utah. Ta’Zhawn Henry added 55 rushing yards of his own, while SaRodorick Thompson found the end zone twice as part of 30 yards on the ground. n

HONORING DAVE PARKS

Texas Tech lost one of its all-time greats when College Football Hall of Famer and Ring of Honor member Dave Parks passed away Aug. 8 at the age of 77. Tech will wear a special helmet decal throughout the 2019 football season in order to honor the former two-way player under head coach JT King (1961-63). A native of Abilene, Parks was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 and was a charter member of the Texas Tech Ring of Honor in 2012.

WE, US & OUR PROGRAM Since his hire last November, Matt Wells has emphasized that the Red Raider football program will be a “We, Us and Our Program.” “This is a We, Us and Our Program. I’ve said it from day one it’s not about me, it’s not about the starting linebacker, running back or one coordinator or one fan. It’s the power of what we can do together. We’re not an offensive unit. We’re not a defensive unit. We’re a team. We’re Red Raiders. It’s the culture we are creating in this program. We need the passion of Red Raider Nation and make Jones AT&T Stadium the toughest place to play in the Big 12 Conference. We have to do it together.” - Matt Wells #WreckEm
