RED RAIDERS KICK OFF 2014 AT HOME AGAINST UCA Texas Tech kicks off its 90th season of football on Saturday when the Red Raiders play host to Central Arkansas at 6 p.m. in Jones AT&T Stadium. Saturday’s game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports as part of Texas Tech’s third-tier agreement with the cable network. Fans will be able to tune to the radio broadcast from the Texas Tech Sports Network on one of 38 affiliates across the region. Brian Jensen returns to the broadcast booth as the play-by-play announcer for his 15th season and is joined by veteran John Harris who will be in his 32nd year of providing analysis. Chris Level rounds out the crew as the sideline reporter and is in his fifth season.

The Red Raiders enter their second season under head coach Kliff Kingsbury and will look to build upon an 8-5 record from 2013. Texas Tech went just 4-5 in Big 12 play last year but ended the season on a high note with a 37-23 win over No. 16 Arizona State in the National University Holiday Bowl. Texas Tech jumped out to a 7-0 start in 2013 which propelled the Red Raiders all the way up to No. 9 in the USA Today Coaches Poll on Oct. 27. The Red Raiders enter the 2014 season unranked for the sixth consecutive year. TEXAS TECH AND CENTRAL ARKANSAS • Texas Tech and Central Arkansas will be meeting for the first time. Red Raider fans have stepped up in record numbers this season as Texas Tech has sold out of season tickets for the first time in school history. A total of 38,524 fans gobbled up all the season tickets in the stadium and surpassed the previous record of 32,227 sold in Tommy Tuberville’s first season in 2010. With the exception of the Texas game, Texas Tech is currently selling individual game tickets that were unused from the visiting team allotment. Texas Tech will set a new single-season average attendance record at Jones AT&T Stadium for the third consecutive season. Last season, Tech set the record with an average of 57,932. BEST STUDENT BODY IN THE BIG 12 Texas Tech’s student body was tabbed as the best in the Big 12 Conference this spring by ESPN.com. Texas Tech students not only provide a tremendous home field advantage but they are turning out in record setting numbers. Last season, Texas Tech set an average student attendance record of 11,249 and a Jones AT&T Stadium individual game record with 16,092 for the TCU game. 2014 Texas Tech Football Men’s Basketball Single Game Record____ 6,086 (K-State) Big 12 MBB Single Game Record________ 6,086 (K-State) Baseball Single Game Record___________ 1,201 (Texas) FOUR STRAIGHT BOWL WINS Texas Tech’s 37-23 victory over No. 16 Arizona State in the 2013 National University Holiday Bowl gave the Red Raiders their fourth straight bowl victory. Texas Tech now holds the longest active bowl win streak in the Big 12 Conference and the longest in school history. Tech’s streak of bowl wins started in San Antonio with a 41-31 win over Michigan State in the 2009 Alamo Bowl. Texas Tech’s 36 all-time bowl appearances ranks 17th nationally. FIRST TIME SINCE 2009 The turnover at defensive coordinator has mercifully come to an end for Texas Tech as Matt Wallerstedt returns for his second season. This will mark the first time since 2009 that Texas Tech has returned its defensive coordinator from the previous season. The Red Raiders have been under the leadership of five different defensive coordinators since the 2009 season. With Wallerstedt back for the 2014 season, Texas Tech fans are excited to watch the continued improvement of the defensive unit. Overall, the unit returns 88 combined starts and will be led by seniors Sam Eguavoen and Jackson Richards along with juniors Branden Jackson and Pete Robertson. Education is a top priority for Coach Kingsbury as he graduated early and was named the 2002 Academic All-America Player of the Year. Football Graduates Ryan Bustin VJ Fehoko Reshod Fortenberry Kramer Fyfe Brent Mitchum James Polk YOUNG TEAM FULL OF EXPECTATIONS Texas Tech’s 2014 squad will be full of youth as 57.1 percent of the team will be comprised of freshmen and sophomores. The Red Raiders will field 39 freshmen and 21 sophomores. WILLIAMS MAKES THE SWITCH For the first time since the days of Tech greats Donny Anderson and E.J. Holub, will a Red Raider play on both sides of the football. Senior running back Kenny Williams approached the coaching staff in the spring and volunteered for an opportunity to play on both sides of the ball. After a successful spring season and training camp, Williams is expected to start at the RAIDER linebacker position that was vacated with the graduation of Terrance Bullitt. Williams will spend most of his time on the defensive side of the football but you can expect to see him on all three sides of the football - defense, offense and special teams. He was the team’s leading rusher in 2013 with 497 yards and finished sixth on the squad with 264 receiving yards.
WEAPONS RETURNING Most pundits aren’t predicting much from Texas Tech in 2014 which goes to explain a sixth place preseason prediction in the Big 12 Conference race. However, Texas Tech returns its starting quarterback in Davis Webb, 53 percent of its receptions from last season and 77 percent of its rushing yards. With so much returning experience, the Texas Tech offense will look to make major strides in the second year of the Kliff Kingsbury offense. In the Holiday Bowl, Webb set the tone for what could be a sensational career at Texas Tech with a blistering performance against No. 16 Arizona State. He threw for 403 yards and tied a Holiday Bowl record with four touchdown passes as the Red Raiders raced to a 37-23 win. That performance literally transformed a lanky, tentative freshman into a bulky emotional leader that the Red Raiders will rely heavily on in 2014. What’s New With Davis Webb? • Last official weigh-in was 209 but has since weighed in at 217 - dropped to 170 before preseason practice in 2013 due to illness. • Became the youngest counselor in the history of the Elite 11 Quarterback Camp this past summer. A former Elite 11 participant himself, Webb also had the opportunity to tutor incoming quarterback Jarrett Stidham. • Worked with private quarterback coaches George Whitfield and Kevin O’Connell in San Diego in May. • Preseason candidate for the Manning Award, Davey O’Brien Award and the Maxwell Award. GRANT LOOKING FOR BREAKOUT SEASON Ask any member of the Texas Tech Football team and they will tell you that Jakeem Grant is the most explosive player in the Big 12 Conference. HONORS ROLL IN FOR Le’RAVEN CLARK Le’Raven Clark enters the 2014 season as the Red Raider earning the most preseason hype. Clark is a preseason All-Big 12 selection and a second-team All-American by USA Today. Clark, a native of Rockdale, Texas, was an All-Big 12 first team selection by the Associated Press and Athlon Sports as a sophomore after starting all 12 games for the Red Raiders at left tackle. He enters his junior season having started in 26-consecutive games, the longest active streak on the team. Clark was also named to the ESPN Big 12 All-Bowl Team following Tech’s 37-23 victory
over No. 14 Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl. Backed by Clark’s play on the left side, the Red Raider offensive line shut down an explosive Arizona State pass rush that came into the bowl as one of the top defensive fronts in the nation. liff Kingsbury (@TTUKingsbury), Texas Tech’s second all-time leading passer, begins his second season as the head football coach at his alma mater. In his first year as head coach, Kingsbury led the Red Raiders to an 8-5 overall record and a stunning 37-23 win over No. 16 Arizona State in the National University Holiday Bowl. He became just the second coach in school history to win a bowl game in his first season as the Red Raiders dismantled the heavily favored Sun Devils in San Diego. His popularity also helped revitalize the fan base as Texas Tech fans set a new school record for average home attendance (57,933 average per game). Kingsbury returned to his collegiate roots after a one-year stint as offensive coordinator at Texas A&M where he played a huge role in leading freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel to the Heisman Trophy. Under his guidance, the Aggie offense finished third nationally in total offense by averaging 552.33 yards pergame. The Aggies ranked 14th nationally in passing offense and 13th nationally in rushing offense, making Texas A&M one of the most balanced attacks in college football. For the second consecutive year Kingsbury was named the national offensive coordinator of the year. Kliff Kingsbury Kingsbury made the move to Texas A&M from the University of Houston where he played a key role in the Cougars’ record-setting 13-win season in 2011. The Head Coach Cougars finished 2011 with a 13-1 record and posted the program’s highest final BCS finish in school history (No. 19). Kingsbury served as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Cougars, and was named the 2011 Offensive Coordinator of the Year by FootballScoop.com. The Cougars led the nation in total offense, passing offense and scoring in 2011, while record-setting quarterback Case Keenum placed seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting and won the Sammy Baugh Award. With Kingsbury calling the offensive plays, the Cougars averaged 599.1 total yards per game, including 450.1 through the air, while scoring over 49 points per game. The Cougars scored over 70 points in two games in 2011, and finished the season with a 30-14 win over Penn State in the TicketCity Bowl. Kingsbury was instrumental in the continued development of Keenum, who finished his illustrious career as the most prolific passer in NCAA FBS history. In his one season with Kingsbury as his QB coach, Keenum completed 428-of-604 passes for 5,631 yards and 48 touchdowns, all NCAA FBS bests. In his first season as QB coach at Houston in 2010, Kingsbury prepped a true freshman signal caller, David Piland, to an average of 330.1 yards passing per game, which ranked No. 3 nationally. He was named to the Sporting News Freshman All-America team. After a five-year professional football career, Kingsbury entered the coaching ranks in the spring of 2008 when he joined Sumlin’s staff as an offensive quality control assistant. A sixth-round draft pick in 2003 by the New England Patriots, Kingsbury played for five NFL teams and also saw action in the Canadian Football League and the All-American Football League. Kingsbury was drafted by Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots after a record-setting career at Texas Tech. Kingsbury received multiple honors including Associated Press Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year as a quarterback for the Red Raiders. In addition, he set 39 school records, 16 Big 12 marks and 17 NCAA records during his career at Tech (1999-2002). As a senior he was awarded the Sammy Baugh Trophy, presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback. The first in a long line of record-setting Texas Tech quarterbacks under then-head coach Mike Leach, Kingsbury recorded more than 12,000 passing yards and total offense including over 1,000 pass completions making him only the third player in NCAA history to accomplish all three. Kingsbury also excelled in the classroom as he was one of 14 collegiate football players to receive a post-graduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame as he also garnered Academic All-America Player of the Year honors in 2002. A native of New Braunfels, Texas, Kingsbury graduated from Texas Tech in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in management.
