2014 Texas Tech Football ON THIS DATE IN TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL HISTORY SEPTEMBER 13 – (3-3 Overall; 3-2 Home; 0-1 Road) 2008-SMU W 43-7 1997-SW Louisiana W 59-14 1990-#18 Houston L 35-51 1986-at #2 Miami (Fla.) L 11-61 1980-#15 North Carolina L 3-9 1975-Florida State W 31-20 FRESH LEGS WILL BE KEY Keeping fresh legs will be a priority for Texas Tech as they prepare to face the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday. While most of the country was already in bed, Texas Tech and UTEP completed a 3:37 minute game at 1:42 a.m. (CT) on Sunday morning. Following the game, it was learned that a mechanical issue with the team charter would force the team to overnight in El Paso instead of returning home to Lubbock as scheduled. The Red Raiders did not land in Lubbock until 1:21 p.m. (CT) on Sunday afternoon. BIG PLAYS In just two games, Texas Tech has already compiled two plays of 70-plus yards. In the opener against Central Arkansas, Bradley Marquez scored on a 70-yard TD reception in the fourth quarter to help lead Tech to a 42-35 win. At UTEP, freshman Justin Stockton scored the first points of the game for Tech on a 75-yard touchdown run. Prior to this season, Tech had gone three-straight seasons (2011-13) without a single play of 70 or more yards. YOUNG SECONDARY IS OFF TO A GOOD START Despite boasting one of the youngest secondaries in the country, Texas Tech has kept opposing offenses off-balance through the air this season as the Red Raiders rank among the top-25 teams nationally for defensive team passing efficiency (24th). Opposing offenses are only completing 50 percent of their passes (33-for-66) through two games against the Red Raiders, averaging 172 yards-per-game. The Red Raiders held UTEP to just 116 yards through the air this past weekend on just 9-for26 passing (26 percent). The Tech secondary has featured a true freshman (Tevin Madison), two sophomores (Keenon Ward and

Justis Nelson) and a junior (J.J. Gaines) in the starting lineup with another true freshman (Jah’Shawn Johnson), a redshirt freshman (Jalen Barnes), a sophomore (Thierry Nguema) and a junior (Josh Keys) listed in the two-deep. DEFENSE CRUCIAL IN WIN OVER UTEP The Texas Tech defense made the big stop when it needed it the most early Sunday morning at UTEP. The Red Raiders, faced with defending a UTEP offense that was starting its drive at the Tech 33-yardline with just over two minutes remaining, limited the Miners to just four yards in crunch time, protecting a 30-26 lead and giving the ball back to the offense with 1:23 to play. The defensive stand was highlighted by a 4th-and-6 incompletion over the middle that was forced by pressure off the end from Branden Jackson. It was the first defensive stand for the Red Raiders to essentially end a game since Tech topped Kansas, 41-34, in double overtime in 2012. NOTING DAVIS WEBB • Threw three touchdowns in Texas Tech’s 30-26 win over UTEP at the Sun Bowl on Sept. 6. His 31 passing attempts (17-of-31) were the second fewest of his career as the starting quarterback. • Webb has thrown at least one TD pass in the first 12 games of his career and that marks a school record for a Texas Tech quarterback. • Engineered the second game-winning drive of his career on Saturday against UTEP, as he led a 7-play, 75 yard drive late in the fourth quarter that resulted in a 9-yard TD pass to Bradley Marquez. The TD drive gave Texas Tech a 30-26 lead and ultimately the victory over UTEP. • 127 consecutive pass attempts without being sacked. Spans UCA, Arizona State games and final three pass attempts vs. Kansas State last season. • Through two games, he leads the Big 12 Conference in both total offense and passing. His 730 passing yards ranks sixth nationally. • Against Central Arkansas, Webb overcame a sluggish start and threw for 452 yards (39-of-52 passing) and four touchdowns to lead the Red Raiders to a 42-35 win over the Bears. Webb’s performance was the best by a Texas Tech quarterback

MARQUEZ EMERGING AS TOP OFFENSIVE WEAPON Senior receiver Bradley Marquez has emerged as the top offensive weapon for the Red Raiders through the first two games of the season. His five touchdown catches are the reason Texas Tech is 2-0 on the season and are the most TD catches by any receiver in the country. His 15.0 points-per-game average ranks tied for fifth nationally and he is the only player from the Big 12 Conference that ranks in the top 10. • Only 16 FBS football teams have more touchdowns than Bradley Marquez. • Against UTEP, he scored 18 of Texas Tech’s 30 points, including the game winning touchdown catch with 2:33 remaining in the fourth quarter. The nine-yard TD pass from Webb was his second TD catch of the second half. • In the season opener, Marquez compiled 10 receptions for 184 yards, the most by a Red Raider receiver in a season opener since Darrin Moore collected 221 yards in 2011 against Texas State. His 184 yards are also the most for a Red Raider in any game since Moore recorded 186 yards in 2012 against Baylor. Marquez’ big night was boosted by his 70-yard touchdown catch, the longest reception for a Red Raider since Jacoby Franks pulled in a 72-yarder in 2009 against Kansas State. STOCKTON SHINES True freshman running back Justin Stockton has given Red Raider fans plenty to smile about in the first two games of the season. In two games, Stockton has become the team’s top rusher with 173 yards on 14 attempts. Against UTEP, he rushed for 135 yards on 8 carries (16.9 yards/rush) making him the first Red Raider freshman to rush for 100 yards since Taurean Henderson ran for 141 yards on 21 carries during his freshman season in 2002 in a 51-48 overtime loss against NC State in Lubbock on Sept. 21. He scored Texas Tech’s first points of the game with a 75-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter. The touchdown run was the longest for a Tech player since Eric Stephens’ 86-yard TD run against Northwestern in the TicketCity Bowl during the 2010 season. BUSTIN CHASING CAREER FIELD GOALS RECORD Senior placekicker Ryan Bustin is chasing the school record for career field goals. Against UTEP, Bustin moved into a tie for third place with his 41st career field goal and needs just two more field goals to move into sole possession of second place. Career Field Goal Leaders 1. BRIEFLY... • Texas Tech is 59-6 at home against non-ranked opponents since 2000. • Texas Tech has now won 19 consecutive games against nonBig 12 opponents. Tech’s last non-Big 12 loss was at Houston in 2009. • Texas Tech won its 26th consecutive game against a non-conference opponent at Jones AT&T Stadium with the 42-35 win over Central Arkansas in the season opener. Tech’s last home non-conference loss was in 2002 against North Carolina State. • Texas Tech has scored in 209 consecutive games dating back to Oct. 25, 1997. That streak is currently the second longest active streak in the Big 12 (K-State, 218). • Texas Tech has lost the turnover battle in 10 consecutive games dating back to a 42-35 win over Iowa State last season. In that stretch, the Red Raiders are 5-5. • Texas Tech’s 31 pass attempts at UTEP were the fewest for a Texas Tech team since the 2008 season when the Red Raiders attempted just 25 passes in a 37-31 overtime win over Nebraska at Jones AT&T Stadium. • Jakeem Grant had a career night at UTEP with 150 receiving yards on eight receptions. His previous career high was 99 yards last season against Oklahoma. • Senior receiver Bradley Marquez has now caught at least one pass in 31 of 33 career games. • With 87 kickoff return yards against Central Arkansas, Jakeem Grants needs just 67 yards to move past John Norman (199700) into 10th place on the school’s career kickoff return yards list. Grant currently has 724 career return yards on 28 returns (average of 25.9 per return). DEFENSIVE TIDBITS ... • Texas Tech rotated its defensive line in-and-out throughout the UTEP game as a total of eight defensive linemen saw action in the 30-26 victory. The Red Raider defensive line was missing two of its regulars in the game as Jackson Richardson and Rika Levi were both held out of the contest. • Texas Tech’s 116 passing yards allowed to UTEP marked the fewest for an opposing offense with at least 20 attempts since Iowa State totaled only 72 yards through the air on Sept. 29, 2012. • UTEP completed only 26 percent of its passes (9-for-26), the lowest completion percentage for a Texas Tech opponent since holding New Mexico to just 26 percent passing as well on Sept. 17, 2011. • Over half of the Red Raider defensive players (13-of-23) who have recorded a tackle this year are classified as a freshmen, sophomore or a newcomer to the Tech roster. This figure includes senior linebacker Kenny Williams, who moved to the defensive side of the ball last spring. • Among Red Raider defensive players with a tackle this year, three are freshmen, four are sophomores, 12 are juniors and four are seniors. • Texas Tech’s top-three tacklers through two games – Keenon Ward, Tevin Madison, Justis Nelson – all play in the secondary and are classified as either a true freshman in the case of Madison or a sophomore. • Tevin Madison has made a smooth transition to Division-I football as the true freshman is Texas Tech’s second-leading tackler with 11 through the first two games. Madison, who leads Tech with three pass breakups so far, is one of two true freshmen cornerbacks to see action so far for the Red Raiders along with Jah’Shawn Johnson. • Keland McElrath played the majority of snaps for Texas Tech on the defensive line against UTEP. He led the Red Raider defensive front with 5.5 tackles in the game, moving his season

total to 9.5 through two games, fourth-best on the team. • Tevin Madison (Central Arkansas) and Keenon Ward (UTEP) led the Red Raiders in tackles in each of the first two contests of 2014. Dating back to the 2004 season, it is the first time a pair of Texas Tech underclassmen have recorded team-highs in tackles over the first two games of a season. CONSECUTIVE GAMES SCORING STREAK Texas Tech is currently riding a consecutive game scoring streak that spans 209 games dating back to the 1997 season. The streak ranks 13th nationally and is the second longest streak in the Big 12 Conference behind Kansas State. His previous career best was 88 rushing yards in an upset of top-ranked Oklahoma in 2011. He scored the first touchdown of the season for the Red Raiders on their second offensive possession in the first quarter. He is the first 100-yard rusher for Texas Tech since Eric Stephens carried for 118 yards (12 carries) against New Mexico on Sept. 15, 2012. NOTABLE FIRSTS FOR 2014 • Texas Tech scored its first points of the season on the second drive of the UCA game when DeAndre Washington scored on a 1-yard touchdown with 5:13 to go in the first quarter. The drive required a conversion on fourth down early on (Jakeem Grant 11-yard catch on 4th and 7) and covered 43 yards on 10 plays. • Junior defensive lineman Branden Jackson registered the first sack of the season for the Texas Tech defense that forced a Central Arkansas field goal on its second possession of the game. • Junior running back DeAndre Washington scored the first touchdown of the season for the Red Raiders on a 1-yard run with 5:13 remaining in the first quarter. • True freshman Justin Stockton recorded his first career touchdown with a six-yard TD run that gave Tech a 21-16 lead with 3:35 to go in the first half. Representing the offense is sophomore quarterback Davis Webb and senior wide receiver Bradley Marquez. The defense is represented by senior linebackers Kenny Williams and Sam Eguavoen. Williams is a team captain for the second straight season marking a first for a Tech player since Graham Harrell was voted captain consecutively in 2007 and 2008. KINGSBURY RECEIVES CONTRACT EXTENSION Texas Tech made head coach Kliff Kingsbury one of the highest paid coaches in college football on the eve of the 2014 season with the announcement of a three-year contract extension through 2020. Kingsbury’s original contract was a five-year deal signed in February 2013 that would keep him at Texas Tech through 2017. The financial terms of the new contract call for a raise in salary in 2015 to $3.1 million with escalation to $4.1 million in 2020. THE CAMPAIGN FOR FEARLESS CHAMPIONS Texas Tech unveiled the first athletics specific capital campaign in university history in a news conference on Friday, Aug. 29. The Campaign for Fearless Champions is a comprehensive athletics campaign that will significantly impact every student-athlete and all 17 sports. The Campaign for Fearless Champions will: • Enhance athletic facilities • Invest in the athletic scholarship endowment • Grow the Leadership Academy • Provide for the future of Texas Tech Athletics By impacting athletic facilities, scholarship endowments and the Fearless Champions Leadership Academy, The Campaign for Fearless Champions will impact every student-athlete in every sport. The initiative totals $185 million with $75 million already committed from generous Texas Tech friends and donors. Texas Tech’s goal of providing state-of-the-art facilities for its student-athletes is at the forefront of The Campaign for Fearless Champions. Progress towards the facility upgrades/ additions is underway as a total of eight projects have recently been completed or have been funded and are in progress. Those projects include: • United Supermarkets Arena Team Facilities Renovations • Indoor Soccer Facility • Football Video Board • North End Zone Colonnade • United Supermarkets Arena Weight Room Renovation • Baseball Grandstand and Clubhouse Roof • Track and Field Team Building • The Rawls Course Bunker Restoration A total of 25 facility projects are the focus of the campaign and will include the construction of an indoor football training facility, a renovation of the south end zone stadium building and a new indoor track and field complex. FEARLESS FANS LIVE HERE Texas Tech will devote all of its marketing collateral (in all sports) this season to pay tribute to its great fan base. Red Raider fans have stepped up in record numbers this season as Texas Tech has sold out of season tickets for the first time in school history. A total of 38,524 fans gobbled up all the season tickets in the stadium and surpassed the previous record of 32,227 sold in Tommy Tuberville’s first season in 2010. With the exception of the Texas game, Texas Tech is currently selling

individual game tickets that were unused from the visiting team allotment. Texas Tech will set a new single-season average attendance record at Jones AT&T Stadium for the third consecutive season. Last season, Tech set the record with an average of 57,932. BEST STUDENT BODY IN THE BIG 12 Texas Tech’s student body was tabbed as the best in the Big 12 Conference this spring by ESPN.com. Texas Tech students not only provide a tremendous home field advantage but they are turning out in record setting numbers. Last season, Texas Tech set an average student attendance record of 11,249 and a Jones AT&T Stadium individual game record with 16,092 for the TCU game. In an era where student attendance is declining across the country, the opposite is occurring in Lubbock as Tech students not only set facility attendance records at football but also at basketball and baseball. Texas Tech now holds the longest active bowl win streak in the Big 12 Conference and the longest in school history. Tech’s streak of bowl wins started in San Antonio with a 41-31 win over Michigan State in the 2009 Alamo Bowl. Texas Tech’s 36 all-time bowl appearances ranks 17th nationally. FIRST TIME SINCE 2009 The turnover at defensive coordinator has mercifully come to an end for Texas Tech as Matt Wallerstedt returns for his second season. This will mark the first time since 2009 that Texas Tech has returned its defensive coordinator from the previous season. The Red Raiders have been under the leadership of five different defensive coordinators since the 2009 season. With Wallerstedt back for the 2014 season, Texas Tech fans are excited to watch the continued improvement of the defensive unit. Overall, the unit returns 88 combined starts and will be led by seniors Sam Eguavoen and Jackson Richards along with juniors Branden Jackson and Pete Robertson. WILLIAMS MAKES THE SWITCH For the first time since the days of Tech greats Donny Anderson and E.J. Holub, will a Red Raider play on both sides of the football. Senior running back Kenny Williams approached the coaching staff in the spring and volunteered for an opportunity to play on both sides of the ball. After a successful spring season and training camp, Williams is expected to start at the RAIDER linebacker position that was vacated with the graduation of Terrance Bullitt. Williams will spend most of his time on the defensive side of the football but you can expect to see him on all three sides of the football - defense, offense and special teams. He was the team’s leading rusher in 2013 with 497 yards and finished sixth on the squad with 264 receiving yards. WEAPONS RETURNING Most pundits aren’t predicting much from Texas Tech in 2014 which goes to explain a sixth place preseason prediction in the Big 12 Conference race. However, Texas Tech returns its starting quarterback in Davis Webb, 53 percent of its receptions from last season and 77 percent of its rushing yards. With so much returning experience, the Texas Tech offense will look to make major strides in the second year of the Kliff Kingsbury offense. Top Returners For 2014 QB Davis Webb: 2,718 yards/ 20 TDs WR Jakeem Grant: 65 catches/796 yards/7 TDs WR Bradley Marquez: 49 catches/633 yards/6 TDs RB DeAndre Washington: 34 catches/269 receiving yards/107 rushes/450 rushing yards RB Kenny Williams: 30 catches/264 receiving yards/125 rushes/497 rushing yards WEBB MATURES QUICKLY INTO TEAM LEADER After battling for the starting quarterback job most of last season, Davis Webb enters his sophomore season as not only the starter but as a key team leader. In the Holiday Bowl, Webb set the tone for what could be a sensational career at Texas Tech with a blistering performance against No. 16 Arizona State. He threw for 403 yards and tied a Holiday Bowl record with four touchdown passes as the Red Raiders raced to a 37-23 win. That performance literally transformed a lanky, tentative freshman into a bulky emotional leader that the Red Raiders will rely heavily on in 2014. What’s New With Davis Webb? • Last official weigh-in was 209 but has since weighed in at 217 - dropped to 170 before preseason practice in 2013 due to illness. • Became the youngest counselor in the history of the Elite 11 Quarterback Camp this past summer. 2014 Texas Tech Football pant himself, Webb also had the opportunity to tutor incoming quarterback Jarrett Stidham. • Worked with private quarterback coaches George Whitfield and Kevin O’Connell in San Diego in May. • Preseason candidate for the Manning Award, Davey O’Brien Award and the Maxwell Award. GRANT LOOKING FOR BREAKOUT SEASON Ask any member of the Texas Tech Football team and they will tell you that Jakeem Grant is the most explosive player in the Big 12 Conference. His speed and play making ability made him the third leading receiver on the team last season but he certainly has bigger plans for his junior year. His ability was noticed by the committee at the Biletnikoff Award as they placed him on their preseason watch list. • Finished the 2013 season with 65 receptions for 796 yards and seven touchdowns. • As a kick returner he compiled a team-leading 19 returns for 400 yards (21.1 average per return) in 2013. • Compiled 1,273 all-purpose yards in 2013 with an average of 106.1 yards per game. HONORS ROLL IN FOR Le’RAVEN CLARK Le’Raven Clark enters the 2014 season as the Red Raider earning the most preseason hype. Clark is a preseason All-Big 12 selection and a second-team All-American by USA Today. Clark, a native of Rockdale, Texas, was an All-Big 12 first team selection by the Associated Press and Athlon Sports as a sophomore after starting all 12 games for the Red Raiders at left tackle. He enters his junior season having started in 26-consecutive games, the longest active streak on the team. Clark was also named to the ESPN Big 12 All-Bowl Team following Tech’s 37-23 victory over No. 14 Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl. Backed by Clark’s play on the left side, the Red Raider offensive line shut down an explosive Arizona State pass rush that came into the bowl as one of the top defensive fronts in the nation. He is also a candidate for the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award.

2014 Texas Tech Football KLIFF KINGSBURY

K

liff Kingsbury (@TTUKingsbury), Texas Tech’s second all-time leading passer, begins his second season as the head football coach at his alma mater. In his first year as head coach, Kingsbury led the Red Raiders to an 8-5 overall record and a stunning 37-23 win over No. 16 Arizona State in the National University Holiday Bowl. He became just the second coach in school history to win a bowl game in his first season as the Red Raiders dismantled the heavily favored Sun Devils in San Diego. His popularity also helped revitalize the fan base as Texas Tech fans set a new school record for average home attendance (57,933 average per game). Kingsbury returned to his collegiate roots after a one-year stint as offensive coordinator at Texas A&M where he played a huge role in leading freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel to the Heisman Trophy. Under his guidance, the Aggie offense finished third nationally in total offense by averaging 552.33 yards pergame. The Aggies ranked 14th nationally in passing offense and 13th nationally in rushing offense, making Texas A&M one of the most balanced attacks in college football. For the second consecutive year Kingsbury was named the national offensive coordinator of the year. Kliff Kingsbury Kingsbury made the move to Texas A&M from the University of Houston where he played a key role in the Cougars’ record-setting 13-win season in 2011. The Head Coach Cougars finished 2011 with a 13-1 record and posted the program’s highest final BCS finish in school history (No. 19). Kingsbury served as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Cougars, and was named the 2011 Offensive Coordinator of the Year by FootballScoop.com. The Cougars led the nation in total offense, passing offense and scoring in 2011, while record-setting quarterback Case Keenum placed seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting and won the Sammy Baugh Award. With Kingsbury calling the offensive plays, the Cougars averaged 599.1 total yards per game, including 450.1 through the air, while scoring over 49 points per game. The Cougars scored over 70 points in two games in 2011, and finished the season with a 30-14 win over Penn State in the TicketCity Bowl. Kingsbury was instrumental in the continued development of Keenum, who finished his illustrious career as the most prolific passer in NCAA FBS history. In his one season with Kingsbury as his QB coach, Keenum completed 428-of-604 passes for 5,631 yards and 48 touchdowns, all NCAA FBS bests. In his first season as QB coach at Houston in 2010, Kingsbury prepped a true freshman signal caller, David Piland, to an average of 330.1 yards passing per game, which ranked No. 3 nationally. He was named to the Sporting News Freshman All-America team. After a five-year professional football career, Kingsbury entered the coaching ranks in the spring of 2008 when he joined Sumlin’s staff as an offensive quality control assistant. A sixth-round draft pick in 2003 by the New England Patriots, Kingsbury played for five NFL teams and also saw action in the Canadian Football League and the All-American Football League. Kingsbury was drafted by Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots after a record-setting career at Texas Tech. Kingsbury received multiple honors including Associated Press Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year as a quarterback for the Red Raiders. In addition, he set 39 school records, 16 Big 12 marks and 17 NCAA records during his career at Tech (1999-2002). As a senior he was awarded the Sammy Baugh Trophy, presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback. The first in a long line of record-setting Texas Tech quarterbacks under then-head coach Mike Leach, Kingsbury recorded more than 12,000 passing yards and total offense including over 1,000 pass completions making him only the third player in NCAA history to accomplish all three. Kingsbury also excelled in the classroom as he was one of 14 collegiate football players to receive a post-graduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame as he also garnered Academic All-America Player of the Year honors in 2002. A native of New Braunfels, Texas, Kingsbury graduated from Texas Tech in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in management. LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Davis Webb threw for 452 yards and four touchdowns to lead Texas Tech to a 42-35 win over Central Arkansas Saturday night. The sophomore quarterback also had two interceptions, a fifth what he threw all last season. Webb completed 39 of 52 passes and threw TDs of 6, 5 and 70 yards. The 70-yarder early in the fourth quarter was a career high for Webb and receiver Bradley Marquez. Central Arkansas (0-1) of the Football Championship Subdivision was ahead midway through the second quarter. Once Texas Tech led, the Bears pulled within 42-35 late in the game when backup quarterback Ryan Howard threw an 8-yard TD to Damien Watts. Bears starting QB Taylor Reed threw for 140 yards and scored on a 1-yard run. DeAndre Washington of Texas Tech (1-0) rushed for a career-high 104 yards on 20 carries. The team beat last season’s rushing average by 66 yards. Marquez had two touchdown catches, grabbing a 27-yarder from Webb about 7 minutes after the first. The Red Raiders came out after halftime and put together an 11-play scoring drive. Webb found Reginald Davis over the middle on a 5-yard slant to put Texas Tech up 28-16. Webb hit Bradley Marquez on a crossing route and he scampered along the near sideline for a 70-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to put the Red Raiders up 35-21. The Bears kept plugging, scoring after each of the Red Raiders touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Early in the week, Red Raiders coached Kliff Kingsbury said his goals for the game were to reduce penalties and turnovers. Last season the Red Raiders had 18 interceptions (113th in nation) and the team lost 15 fumbles (116th). Webb, who had nine interceptions in 10 games last season, had two before halftime. Both picks seemed to come on plays where Webb forced the pass. Both picks led to scores for the Bears. Texas Tech finished with 114 yards on 15 penalties; last year they averaged eight penalites and 75.2 yards per game. Webb’s first pick came on first down at the Bears 11-yard line. Webb rolled to left and tried to force the ball to Devin Lauderdale, who was being covered by Prince Ene. The ball popped up and was intercepted by Dawson Hadnot. From there, the Bears put together a 12-play drive to go up 10-7. Webb’s second interception came when he tried to hit Jakeem Grant on the far sideline. There wasn’t a lot of space to get it to Grant and the ball was picked off by Artez Williams at Texas Tech’s 40. Williams returned it to the Red Raiders 2-yard line, and Willie Matthews took it in on the first play to put Central Arkansas up 16-7 early in the second half.

Sun Bowl (35,422 Attendance) September 13, 2014

EL PASO Texas (AP) - Davis Webb threw three touchdown passes to Bradley Marquez to help lift Texas Tech to a 30-26 victory over Texas-El Paso Saturday night. UTEP (1-1) led 6-0 early in the game, but the Red Raiders (2-0) fought back for a 16-13 halftime lead. Tech pushed its lead to 23-13 on a 13-yard scoring pass from Webb to Marquez in the third, but the Miners hung tough. UTEP answered with a 24-yard touchdown run from Jeremiah Laufasa that cut Tech’s lead to 23-19 at the end of the third quarter. A 9-yard scoring run by Aaron Jones at 5:05 put UTEP back in front at 26-23. Jones ran for 137 yards. The Red Raiders turned to their passing game and another hookup from Webb to Marquez. This time, the two connected on a 9-yard touchdown and Ryan Bustin’s extra point put Tech ahead to stay at 30-26. The key plays on that drive, which covered 75 yards in seven plays, were carries of 20 and 24 yards by Justin Stockton. Stockton led Tech with 139 yards on just eight carries, including a 75-yarder for a touchdown in the second quarter. Still, UTEP wasn’t done. Autrey Golden of the Miners returned the ensuing kickoff 52 yards. After a 15-yard facemask penalty was tacked on, UTEP had the ball on the Tech 33-yard line with 2:23 still to play. Tech responded though, and this time it was the Raiders’ defense that answered the bell, limiting UTEP to 4 yards on four plays and forcing the Miners to turn the ball over on downs. UTEP’s final play, a fourth-and-6 from the Tech 29-yard line, fell incomplete. From there, Tech kneeled out the final 1:23 to wrap up the victory. UTEP came out strong, holding Tech to a three-and-out on the game’s opening possession and then marching 72 yards in 11 plays to take a 3-0 lead. Mattox converted the field goal from 22 yards out at 9:44. Tech finally got into gear offensively two series later, but after rolling up three consecutive first-down plays DeAndre Washington fumbled at the end of a 9-yard carry. Jameel Irving recovered for UTEP at the Miner 16-yard line.
