RED RAIDERS OPEN BIG 12 PLAY IN STILLWATER Texas Tech opens up Big 12 Conference play on Thursday night in Stillwater as the Red Raiders face No. No. 24 Oklahoma State. Thursday’s game will be nationally televised on ESPN with kickoff slated for 6:30 p.m. Texas Tech will be looking to bounce back from a 49-28 setback at home against Arkansas on Sept. 13. The loss dropped the Red Raiders to 2-1 on the season. Oklahoma State stands at 2-1 on the year after winning its last two games against Missouri State and UTSA. The Cowboys pulled a near upset of top-ranked Florida State in the season opener at AT&T Stadium on Aug. 30.

Brian Jensen returns to the broadcast booth as the play-by-play announcer for his 15th season and is joined by veteran John Harris who will be in his 32nd year of providing analysis. Chris Level rounds out the crew as the sideline reporter and is in his fifth season.

TEXAS TECH IN BIG 12 OPENERS Texas Tech opens Big 12 Conference play on the road for the eighth time in the last 11 years and the 14th time overall. Despite having to start league play on the road nearly every season, Texas Tech has managed a 12-6 record in Big 12 openers. Texas Tech has won three straight Big 12 openers, dating back to a 45-34 win at Kansas on Oct. 1, 2011. Texas Tech defeated No. 24 TCU in the Big 12 opener last season, 20-10.

FLASHBACK Texas Tech and Oklahoma State will kick off Big 12 Conference play for just the second time on Thursday night in Stillwater. The last time Tech and OSU faced off in the conference opener was in Stillwater on Sept. 22, 2007, when Oklahoma State edged the Red Raiders 49-45 in front of 37,850 fans at Boone Pickens Stadium. Texas Tech had a final chance to win but Michael Crabtree, the nation’s leader in receptions and touchdown catches at the time, let a 15-yard pass from Graham Harrell bounce off his hands in the end zone after Oklahoma State cornerback Ricky Price flashed in front of him with 11 seconds remaining.

TEXAS TECH AND OKLAHOMA STATE • Texas Tech and Oklahoma State will be meeting for the 42nd time on Thursday night. The Red Raiders lead the all-time series 21-17-3 but the Cowboys have won the last five games against the Red Raiders dating back to the 2009 season.

• Texas Tech will be in search of its first win in Stillwater since 2001. The Cowboys have posted five consecutive wins against the Red Raiders at Boone Pickens stadium dating back to a 51-49 win on Oct. 18, 2003.

• The last five games in Stillwater between Texas Tech and Oklahoma State have produced a combined 4,958 yards of total offense.

Oklahoma State has the edge with 2,500 yards of total offense compared to 2,458 by Texas Tech. Texas Tech put up 718 yards of total offense in 2007 while Oklahoma State peaked with 673 in 2003.

Texas Tech easily stakes claim to the tag “Wide Receiver U” and has the numbers to prove it. Since 2000, Texas Tech receivers have caught 543 touchdowns passes and hauled in 68,666 passing yards - both of which lead the nation. In addition, the Red Raiders have two Biletnikoff Awards on display in the trophy case and two of the most prolific receivers in the NFL. OFFENSIVE LINE OFF TO A STRONG START This time last season, Texas Tech was dealing with a tremendous amount of inexperience on its offensive line. That’s not the case in 2014 and the unit has quickly become a major strength for the Tech offense. Dating back to the Holiday Bowl win over Arizona State, Texas Tech has not allowed a sack in four consecutive games. In 2013, the Red Raiders allowed 19 sacks in the first 12 games of the season. Tech is currently tied for first nationally in sacks allowed (none) with Baylor and New Mexico State.

Factoid • The last time Texas Tech did not allow a sack in four straight games was in 2008. That offensive line featured two First Team All-Americans.

NOTING DAVIS WEBB • Webb has thrown at least one TD pass in the first 13 games of his career and that marks a school record for a Texas Tech quarterback.

• 203 consecutive pass attempts without being sacked. Spans Arkansas, UTEP, UCA, Arizona State games and final three pass attempts vs. Kansas State last season.

• Threw three touchdown passes and rushed for his first career TD in a 49-28 loss at home against Arkansas on Sept. 13.

• Threw three touchdowns in Texas Tech’s 30-26 win over UTEP at the Sun Bowl on Sept. 6. His 31 passing attempts (17-of-31) were the second fewest of his career as the starting quarterback. Engineered the second game-winning drive of his career against UTEP, as he led a 7-play, 75 yard drive late in the fourth quarter that resulted in a 9-yard TD pass to Bradley Marquez.

The TD drive gave Texas Tech a 30-26 lead and ultimately the victory over UTEP. • Against Central Arkansas, Webb overcame a sluggish start and threw for 452 yards (39-of-52 passing) and four touchdowns to lead the Red Raiders to a 42-35 win over the Bears.

Webb’s performance was the best by a Texas Tech quarterback in a season opener since Graham Harrell threw for 536 yards (43-of-58 passing) against Eastern Washington in 2008.

His five touchdown catches are tied for the second most TD catches by any receiver in the country.

• Against UTEP, he scored 18 of Texas Tech’s 30 points, including the game winning touchdown catch with 2:33 remaining in the fourth quarter. The nine-yard TD pass from Webb was his second TD catch of the second half.

• In the season opener, Marquez compiled 10 receptions for 184 yards, the most by a Red Raider receiver in a season opener since Darrin Moore collected 221 yards in 2011 against Texas State. His 184 yards are also the most for a Red Raider in any game since Moore recorded 186 yards in 2012 against Baylor.

Marquez’ big night was boosted by his 70-yard touchdown catch, the longest reception for a Red Raider since Jacoby Franks pulled in a 72-yarder in 2009 against Kansas State.

• Texas Tech has scored in 210 consecutive games dating back to Oct. 25, 1997. That streak is currently the second longest active streak in the Big 12 (K-State, 218).

• Jakeem Grant has led the Red Raiders in receiving in each of the last two games. He caught six passes for 85 yards and one touchdown in the 49-28 loss to Arkansas. He enjoyed a career night at UTEP with 150 receiving yards on eight receptions. His

DEFENSIVE NOTES • Texas Tech has rotated a total of 10 different defensive linemen so far this season, using eight in each of the last two games against run-heavy offenses in UTEP and Arkansas.

• Texas Tech was boosted along the defensive line against Arkansas with the return of junior Rika Levi, who previously missed the UTEP game. Levi finished with a season-high three tackles on the day, including an assist that went for a loss.

• Keland McElrath posted another strong performance against Arkansas, finishing with seven tackles, one shy of his season high set just a week before at UTEP. McElrath has 19 tackles already this season, the most among Red Raider defensive linemen.

• Texas Tech used two new players on the defensive side of the ball against Arkansas as junior Sam Atoe and redshirt freshman Kris Williams were both inserted in the second half. Atoe had previously played mainly on special teams this year while Williams was making his career debut as a Red Raider.

• Over half of the Red Raider defensive players (17-of-27) who have recorded a tackle this year are classified as a freshman, sophomore or a newcomer to the Tech roster. This figure includes senior linebacker Kenny Williams, who moved to the defensive side of the ball last spring.

• Among Red Raider defensive players with a tackle this year, four are freshmen, five are sophomores, 13 are juniors and five are seniors.

• Texas Tech has not been shy about using youth in the secondary this season with three true freshmen seeing action already this year in Derrick Dixon, Jah’Shawn Johnson and Tevin Madison. Tech could potentially add one more true freshman into the mix against Oklahoma State in Nigel Bethel II. • Texas Tech has used a total of 23 newcomers on both sides of the ball this season, including six true freshmen. Of that group, 16 are listed as defensive players.

• Texas Tech’s 116 passing yards allowed to UTEP marked the fewest for an opposing offense with at least 20 attempts since Iowa State totaled only 72 yards through the air on Sept. 29, 2012.

• UTEP completed only 26 percent of its passes (9-for-26), the lowest completion percentage for a Texas Tech opponent since holding New Mexico to just 26 percent passing as well on Sept.17, 2011.

• Tevin Madison (Central Arkansas) and Keenon Ward (UTEP) led the Red Raiders in tackles in each of the first two contests of 2014. Dating back to the 2004 season, it is the first time a pair of Texas Tech underclassmen have recorded team-highs in tackles over the first two games of a season.

• Through three games, Keenon Ward is tied for the team high in tackles with 21 already this year. He is tied for the team high with junior linebackers Sam Eguavoen and Pete Robertson, who both recorded nine and 10 tackles, respectively, against Arkansas.

The Red Raiders, faced with defending a UTEP offense that was starting its drive at the Tech 33-yardline with just over two minutes remaining, limited the Miners to just four yards in crunch time, protecting a 30-26 lead and giving the ball back to the offense with 1:23 to play. The defensive stand was highlighted by a 4th-and-6 incompletion over the middle that was forced by pressure off the end from Branden Jackson.

It was the first defensive stand for the Red Raiders to essentially end a game since Tech topped Kansas, 41-34, in double overtime in 2012.

CAREER NIGHT FOR WASHINGTON Junior running back DeAndre Washington enjoyed a career night in the season opener as he logged 104 rushing yards on 20 attempts. His previous career best was 88 rushing yards in an upset of top-ranked Oklahoma in 2011. He scored the first touchdown of the season for the Red Raiders on their second offensive possession in the first quarter. He is the first 100-yard rusher for Texas Tech since Eric Stephens carried for 118 yards (12 carries) against New Mexico on Sept. 15, 2012.

NOTABLE FIRSTS FOR 2014 • Texas Tech scored its first points of the season on the second drive of the UCA game when DeAndre Washington scored on a 1-yard touchdown with 5:13 to go in the first quarter. The drive required a conversion on fourth down early on (Jakeem Grant 11-yard catch on 4th and 7) and covered 43 yards on 10 plays.

• Junior defensive lineman Branden Jackson registered the first sack of the season for the Texas Tech defense that forced a Central Arkansas field goal on its second possession of the game.

• Junior running back DeAndre Washington scored the first touchdown of the season for the Red Raiders on a 1-yard run with 5:13 remaining in the first quarter.

• True freshman Justin Stockton recorded his first career touchdown with a six-yard TD run that gave Tech a 21-16 lead with 3:35 to go in the first half. He is the first true freshman running back to score a TD in the season opener since DeAndre Washington did so in 2011 against Texas State.

RECORD TURNOUT FOR SEASON OPENER Texas Tech fans turned out in record numbers for the season opener against Central Arkansas. The sellout crowd of 60,778 marked the largest crowd ever for a season opener, surpassing the previous record of 57,528 for the SMU game in 2010. Addi-

tionally, there were 15,142 students in attendance and that is the second largest student crowd in school history.

CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED Texas Tech named its captains for the 2014 season prior to the opener against Central Arkansas. Representing the offense is sophomore quarterback Davis Webb and senior wide receiver Bradley Marquez. The defense is represented by senior linebackers Kenny Williams and Sam Eguavoen. Williams is a team captain for the second straight season marking a first for a Tech player since Graham Harrell was voted captain consecutively in 2007 and 2008.

KINGSBURY RECEIVES CONTRACT EXTENSION Texas Tech made head coach Kliff Kingsbury one of the highest paid coaches in college football on the eve of the 2014 season with the announcement of a three-year contract extension through 2020. Kingsbury’s original contract was a five-year deal signed in February 2013 that would keep him at Texas Tech through 2017. The financial terms of the new contract call for a raise in salary in 2015 to $3.1 million with escalation to $4.1 million in 2020.

Williams will spend most of his time on the defensive side of the football but you can expect to see him on all three sides of the football - defense, offense and special teams. He was the team’s leading rusher in 2013 with 497 yards and finished sixth on the squad with 264 receiving yards.

WEAPONS RETURNING Most pundits aren’t predicting much from Texas Tech in 2014 which goes to explain a sixth place preseason prediction in the Big 12 Conference race. GRANT LOOKING FOR BREAKOUT SEASON Ask any member of the Texas Tech Football team and they will tell you that Jakeem Grant is the most explosive player in the Big 12 Conference. His speed and play making ability made him the third leading receiver on the team last season but he certainly has bigger plans for his junior year. His ability was noticed by the committee at the Biletnikoff Award as they placed him on their preseason watch list.

KINGSBURY IN ELITE COMPANY Texas Tech Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury is one of just two coaches nationally that finished in the Top 10 in the Heisman Trophy voting and played in the NFL. liff Kingsbury (@TTUKingsbury), Texas Tech’s second all-time leading passer, begins his second season as the head football coach at his alma mater.

In his first year as head coach, Kingsbury led the Red Raiders to an 8-5 overall record and a stunning 37-23 win over No. 16 Arizona State in the National University Holiday Bowl. He became just the second coach in school history to win a bowl game in his first season as the Red Raiders dismantled the heavily favored Sun Devils in San Diego. His popularity also helped revitalize the fan base as Texas Tech fans set a new school record for average home attendance (57,933 average per game).

Kingsbury returned to his collegiate roots after a one-year stint as offensive coordinator at Texas A&M where he played a huge role in leading freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel to the Heisman Trophy. Under his guidance, the Aggie offense finished third nationally in total offense by averaging 552.33 yards pergame. The Aggies ranked 14th nationally in passing offense and 13th nationally in rushing offense, making Texas A&M one of the most balanced attacks in college football. For the second consecutive year Kingsbury was named the national offensive coordinator of the year.

Kliff Kingsbury Kingsbury made the move to Texas A&M from the University of Houston where he played a key role in the Cougars’ record-setting 13-win season in 2011. The Head Coach Cougars finished 2011 with a 13-1 record and posted the program’s highest final BCS finish in school history (No. 19).

Kingsbury served as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Cougars, and was named the 2011 Offensive Coordinator of the Year by FootballScoop.com. The Cougars led the nation in total offense, passing offense and scoring in 2011, while record-setting quarterback Case Keenum placed seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting and won the Sammy Baugh Award.

With Kingsbury calling the offensive plays, the Cougars averaged 599.1 total yards per game, including 450.1 through the air, while scoring over 49 points per game. The Cougars scored over 70 points in two games in 2011, and finished the season with a 30-14 win over Penn State in the TicketCity Bowl.

Kingsbury was instrumental in the continued development of Keenum, who finished his illustrious career as the most prolific passer in NCAA FBS history. In his one season with Kingsbury as his QB coach, Keenum completed 428-of-604 passes for 5,631 yards and 48 touchdowns, all NCAA FBS bests.

In his first season as QB coach at Houston in 2010, Kingsbury prepped a true freshman signal caller, David Piland, to an average of 330.1 yards passing per game, which ranked No. 3 nationally.

He was named to the Sporting News Freshman All-America team.

After a five-year professional football career, Kingsbury entered the coaching ranks in the spring of 2008 when he joined Sumlin’s staff as an offensive quality control assistant. A sixth-round draft pick in 2003 by the New England Patriots, Kingsbury played for five NFL teams and also saw action in the Canadian Football League and the All-American Football League.

Kingsbury was drafted by Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots after a record-setting career at Texas Tech. Kingsbury received multiple honors including Associated Press Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year as a quarterback for the Red Raiders. In addition, he set 39 school records, 16 Big 12 marks and 17 NCAA records during his career at Tech (1999-2002). As a senior he was awarded the Sammy Baugh Trophy, presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback.

The first in a long line of record-setting Texas Tech quarterbacks under then-head coach Mike Leach, Kingsbury recorded more than 12,000 passing yards and total offense including over 1,000 pass completions making him only the third player in NCAA history to accomplish all three. Kingsbury also excelled in the classroom as he was one of 14 collegiate football players to receive a post-graduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame as he also garnered Academic All-America Player of the Year honors in 2002.

A native of New Braunfels, Texas, Kingsbury graduated from Texas Tech in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in management.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Davis Webb threw for 452 yards and four touchdowns to lead Texas Tech to a 42-35 win over Central Arkansas Saturday night.

The sophomore quarterback also had two interceptions, a fifth what he threw all last season.

Webb completed 39 of 52 passes and threw TDs of 6, 5 and 70 yards. The 70-yarder early in the fourth quarter was a career high for Webb and receiver Bradley Marquez.

Central Arkansas (0-1) of the Football Championship Subdivision was ahead midway through the second quarter. Once Texas Tech led, the Bears pulled within 42-35 late in the game when backup quarterback Ryan Howard threw an 8-yard TD to Damien Watts.

Bears starting QB Taylor Reed threw for 140 yards and scored on a 1-yard run.

DeAndre Washington of Texas Tech (1-0) rushed for a career-high 104 yards on 20 carries. The team beat last season’s rushing average by 66 yards.

Marquez had two touchdown catches, grabbing a 27-yarder from Webb about 7 minutes after the first.

The Red Raiders came out after halftime and put together an 11-play scoring drive. Webb found Reginald Davis over the middle on a 5-yard slant to put Texas Tech up 28-16.

Webb hit Bradley Marquez on a crossing route and he scampered along the near sideline for a 70-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to put the Red Raiders up 35-21.

The Bears kept plugging, scoring after each of the Red Raiders touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Early in the week, Red Raiders coached Kliff Kingsbury said his goals for the game were to reduce penalties and turnovers.

Last season the Red Raiders had 18 interceptions (113th in nation) and the team lost 15 fumbles (116th).

Webb, who had nine interceptions in 10 games last season, had two before halftime. Both picks seemed to come on plays where Webb forced the pass. Both picks led to scores for the Bears.

Texas Tech finished with 114 yards on 15 penalties; last year they averaged eight penalites and 75.2 yards per game.

Webb’s first pick came on first down at the Bears 11-yard line. Webb rolled to left and tried to force the ball to Devin Lauderdale, who was being covered by Prince Ene. The ball popped up and was intercepted by Dawson Hadnot.

From there, the Bears put together a 12-play drive to go up 10-7.

Webb’s second interception came when he tried to hit Jakeem Grant on the far sideline. There wasn’t a lot of space to get it to Grant and the ball was picked off by Artez Williams at Texas Tech’s 40. EL PASO Texas (AP) - Davis Webb threw three touchdown passes to Bradley Marquez to help lift Texas Tech to a 30-26 victory over Texas-El Paso Saturday night.

UTEP (1-1) led 6-0 early in the game, but the Red Raiders (2-0) fought back for a 16-13 halftime lead.

Tech pushed its lead to 23-13 on a 13-yard scoring pass from Webb to Marquez in the third, but the Miners hung tough.

UTEP answered with a 24-yard touchdown run from Jeremiah Laufasa that cut Tech’s lead to 23-19 at the end of the third quarter.

A 9-yard scoring run by Aaron Jones at 5:05 put UTEP back in front at 26-23. Jones ran for 137 yards.

The Red Raiders turned to their passing game and another hookup from Webb to Marquez. This time, the two connected on a 9-yard touchdown and Ryan Bustin’s extra point put Tech ahead to stay at 30-26.

The key plays on that drive, which covered 75 yards in seven plays, were carries of 20 and 24 yards by Justin Stockton.

Stockton led Tech with 139 yards on just eight carries, including a 75-yarder for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Still, UTEP wasn’t done. Autrey Golden of the Miners returned the ensuing kickoff 52 yards. After a 15-yard facemask penalty was tacked on, UTEP had the ball on the Tech 33-yard line with 2:23 still to play.

Tech responded though, and this time it was the Raiders’ defense that answered the bell, limiting UTEP to 4 yards on four plays and forcing the Miners to turn the ball over on downs. UTEP’s final play, a fourth-and-6 from the Tech 29-yard line, fell incomplete.

From there, Tech kneeled out the final 1:23 to wrap up the victory.

UTEP came out strong, holding Tech to a three-and-out on the game’s opening possession and then marching 72 yards in 11 plays to take a 3-0 lead. Mattox converted the field goal from 22 yards out at 9:44.

Tech finally got into gear offensively two series later, but after rolling up three consecutive first-down plays DeAndre Washington fumbled at the end of a 9-yard carry. Jameel Irving recovered for UTEP at the Miner 16-yard line.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Jonathan Williams ran for four touchdowns and Alex Collins added two more to lead Arkansas past Texas Tech, 49-28, on Saturday in a matchup of two former Southwest Conference foes.

Williams finished with 145 yards on 22 carries for the Razorbacks (2-1). He scored on rushes of 6, 13, 12 and 6 yards.

Collins finished with a career-high 212 yards on 27 carries, the longest an 84-yard TD in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Arkansas quarterback Brandon Allen also added 5-yard touchdown run.

The win gave the Razorbacks back-to-back wins for the first time in more than a year.

Texas Tech’s Davis Webb completed 27 of 45 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns. He rushed for one TD and threw two interceptions.

Arkansas finished with 438 rushing yards and limited Texas Tech - which came in averaging 365 yards passing - to 252 yards through the air.

Arkansas held the ball (40:39) for more than twice the time the Red Raiders had it (19:21), grinding out 31 first downs.

The Razorbacks chewed up almost half of the third quarter on its first drive. On third-and-goal from the 5, Allen dropped back to pass and was being chased by two Texas Tech defenders. Looking downfield, Allen forced two defensive backs to stay on a receiver as he ran into the end zone, extending Arkansas’ lead to 35-21.

But, true to form, the up-tempo Red Raiders offense struck quickly. Webb threw his final touchdown on a third-and-12 from the Arkansas 39, hitting Jakeem Grant, in stride, over the middle.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Texas Tech got only its second possession of the final half.

Texas Tech struggled against the run last season and Saturday was a repeat of those problems. In the Red Raiders’ fivegame losing streak to close the 2013 regular season, they gave up an average of 294 yards rushing.
