• Texas Tech returns to the road again this weekend, traveling to the UT Arlington Invitational where the Red Raiders will play five games beginning Friday afternoon at newly-renovated Allan Saxe Field.

• The Red Raiders will open the tournament with a Friday doubleheader against DePaul and host UT Arlington before preparing for another twin-bill the following day against UMKC and Prairie View A&M. Texas Tech closes the weekend with its second game of the weekend against DePaul on Sunday morning.

• This is the third of four-straight weekends on the road to start the season for the Red Raiders, who will travel to McNeese State for the Cowgirl Classic held Feb. 27-March 1. The Red Raiders host their home opener March 6 with a doubleheader against Utah Valley and UT Martin.

• Texas Tech will be taking part in the UT Arlington Invitational for a second-straight season as the Red Raiders went 4-1 in the tournament a year ago with wins over UMKC, Illinois, Creighton and the host Mavericks.

• The Red Raiders are coming off a 3-3 performance last weekend at the CenturyLink Classic hosted by Texas State.

Texas Tech downed UTSA twice in the tournament but managed to take only 1-of-3 games against the host Bobcats while also falling to Grand Canyon.

• Texas Tech fans in attendance at Friday’s 7 p.m. first pitch against UT Arlington will recognize a familiar face in Mavericks head coach Kristie Fox, who spent three seasons (201012) as an assistant coach with the Red Raiders before taking over at UTA prior to the 2013 campaign.

• The Red Raiders will face a DePaul program twice this weekend that was ranked 25th in the preseason NFCA/ ESPN.com top-25 poll. The Blue Demons fell out of the poll after a 3-7 start to their season.

DEPAUL Texas Tech and DePaul have become regular non-conference opponents in recent years as Friday’s tournament opener will mark the fourth-straight season the two schools have faced each other on a softball diamond. This will be only the fifth alltime meeting between Texas Tech and DePaul as the series is tied 2-2 entering this weekend. The Red Raiders have won two of the last three meetings with the Blue Demons with a 2-1 victory on Feb. 19, 2012, and then a 6-5 win on March 14 last year. DePaul claimed a 5-3 victory in the first ever meeting between the two schools on March 16, 2002, before defeating Tech, 5-1, on Feb. 10, 2013. All four games have been played at a neutral site, similar to this weekend’s action in Arlington.

Game notes, statistics, lineups, and rosters are provided prior to first pitch. A pregame meal is also served in the press box 45 minutes prior to first pitch.

UT ARLINGTON Texas Tech enters Friday night’s meeting with tournament host UT Arlington looking to extend an eight-game winning streak over the Mavericks. This will be the first of two meetings between Tech and UTA this year as the two schools will also meet in Lubbock on March 8 to close the Texas Tech Invitational. The Red Raiders are 10-4 all-time against a UTA program that has not defeated Tech since scoring a 5-3 victory in the first game of an April 22, 2008, doubleheader in Lubbock. This will be Tech’s fourth trip all-time to Arlington to face UTA as the Red Raiders are 3-1 all-time in those games. The two schools have met a total of seven times since the start of the 2010 season, including twice in 2014 alone. The Red Raiders topped UTA 4-1 in Arlington last season before dowing the Mavericks, 8-1, on March 6 later in the year.

March 6, 2014 Texas Tech 8-1 Lubbock, Texas UMKC UMKC has become a familiar non-conference foe for the Red Raiders in recent years as this will be the 11th time the two schools have faced each other since 2010. The Red Raiders control a commanding 11-1 overall lead in the all-time series with UMKC with the only loss coming in the first ever meeting between the two schools, a 3-2 setback on March 4, 2000. Tech has won 11-straight contests since that lost with six of those ending via run-rule. The Red Raiders are 5-1 all-time against UMKC in neutral-site contests after recording a 13-5 rout of the ‘Roos in the season-opening Lions Classic and then a 5-4 victory in the UTA Hilton Invitational a year ago.

2015 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL RED RAIDERS STAYING AGGRESSIVE ON THE BASE PATHS Since taking over the Texas Tech softball program last summer, Adrian Gregory has insisted she wants the Red Raiders to be aggressive in every aspect of the game - pitching, hitting and on the base paths. Through two weekends, that philosphy can best be seen on the base paths where the Red Raiders have stolen 18 bases, third most currently in the Big 12. Tech leads the conference with 26 stolen base attempts as nine different Red Raiders have swiped a bag this year.

BETTIOL TIED FOR THE BIG 12 LEAD IN HITS AFTER TWO WEEKS Jordan Bettiol’s impact on the Texas Tech lineup has been significant over the first two weeks of the season as the Nebraska transfer is hitting a team-leading .400 overall through 11 games. Bettiol began her Red Raider career with hits in each of Tech’s first nine games of the season where she recorded a team-leading four multiple-hit games. The College Station, Texas native heads to the UT Arlington Invitational this weekend tied for the Big 12 lead with 14 hits this year. She is tied with Brittany Gomez (Iowa State), Lauren Chamberlain (Oklahoma) and Linsey Cargill (Baylor).

WARNECKE PROVIDES POWER IN MIDDLE OF THE LINEUP Brittany Warnecke has pretty much solidified herself in the middle of the Texas Tech lineup through the first two weeks of the season as the sophomore leads the Red Raiders with three home runs and 12 RBI through the first 11 games of the season.

Warnecke connected on two home runs and seven RBI alone last weekend during the CenturyLink Classic as she went deep in both games against UTSA. In addition to her power numbers, Warnecke, who recorded just one home run and three RBI as a freshman in 2014, is hitting .333 for the season which currently ranks second on the team.

RED RAIDERS RECORD 600TH CAREER WIN IN PROGRAM HISTORY OVER MONTANA Texas Tech’s second win of the season - an 8-5 decision over Montana - marked the 600th in program history as the Red Raiders are now 600-652-4 overall. Tech, now in its 24th season of softball, started its program in 1981 before disbanding it following the 1985 season. Softball returned as a sponsored intercollegiate sport in 1996 with the start of the Big 12 Conference.

RED RAIDERS OPEN 2015 WITH COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN OVER NEW MEXICO STATE In just its first game of the 2015 season, Texas Tech proved that no lead was safe, even after six innings. The Red Raiders, facing a 3-2 deficit in the top of the seventh against New Mexico State, used a three-run inning to pull off a 5-3 victory over the Aggies, the first in the career of head coach Adrian Gregory. Devon Thomey highlighted the come-from-behind victory with a two-run double to the wall in center field that scored both Susan Welborn and Kristi Belshe. Tech previously tied the game on a wild pitch that allowed Brooke Scott to scamper home from third base. It marked only the third time since the start of the 2012 season where the Red Raiders have won despite trailing at the start of the seventh inning.

BETTIOL RECORDS ONE OF THE BEST OPENING WEEKENDS IN SCHOOL HISTORY To say Jordan Bettiol made quite the debut as a Red Raider last weekend at the Hotel Encanto Classic might be an understand. Bettiol, a junior transfer from Nebraska, hit a team-leading .563 (9-for-16) over the weekend with three multiple-hit games and at least a hit in each of the five contests. Dating back to the 2003 season, no Red Raider has started a season with a higher batting average than Bettiol through the first five games of the season. Former Red Raider greats Mikey Kenney and Cydney Allen are the only other player during that span to hit over .500 after Kenney totaled a .533 clip (8-for-15) in 2013 while Allen hit .556 overall (10-for-18) in 2011. In addition to her batting average, Bettiol drove in a pair of runs and stole a base from the top of the Tech lineup.

THOMEY TURNS IN MEMORABLE OPENING DAY IN RETURN TO LAS CRUCES Opening Day for Devon Thomey was not just an opportunity for a fresh start with Texas Tech but also a chance to return to New Mexico State where she played her 2014 freshman season. Thomey made the most of her return by going 4-for-7 with six RBI in an Opening Day doubleheader against New Mexico State and Montana. The performance included the game-winning hit against the Aggies as Thomey drilled a double to center field in the seventh inning that scored both Susan Welborn and Kristi Belshe and gave Tech a 5-3 lead it would not relinquish. Thomey followed up by going 3-for-3 with four RBI later that evening against Montana, finishing a double shy of the cycle after a RBI triple in the second and then a two-run homer, the first in her collegiate career in the fourth inning. Her six RBI on the day were one more than her entire total from 2014.

CUSTER MOVES TO SECOND ALL-TIME IN WINS WITH WIN OVER NEW MEXICO STATE All it took was seven innings into the 2015 season for Cara Custer to move into sole possession of second place for wins in the Texas Tech career record book. Custer, a native of Tacoma, Washington, tossed seven strong innings in the season opener against New Mexico State where she picked up career win No. 52 to pass Ashly Jacobs (2007-10) for second all-time in program history. In addition to her rise up the career wins chart, Custer is also chasing several other records as well, including saves, appearances, games started, complete games, ERA and strikeouts.

GREGORY BECOMES FOURTH RED RAIDER HEAD COACH TO WIN DEBUT Adrian Gregory became the fourth head coach in school history to record a victory in their debut leading the Red Raiders last weekend when Texas Tech overcame a seventh inning deficit to top New Mexico State, 5-3. Gregory joins the likes of Bobby Reeves (2001), Amy Suiter (2009) and Shanon Hays (2010) as Texas Tech head coaches to win in their debut. Adrian Gregory 2015 at New Mexico State W, 5-3 GREGORY MAKES DEBUT LEADING THE RED RAIDERS Texas Tech made its official debut under Adrian Gregory on Feb. 5 as the first-year head coach began her tenure with a 5-3 victory over New Mexico State after being hired as the seventh coach in program history this past June. Gregory, a longtime Texas native, arrives at Tech following four seasons as an assistant coach at Sam Houston State. One of the top hitters in Texas A&M history during her collegiate playing career, Gregory has also made coaching stops at Utah and the New England Riptide, formerly of the National Pro Fastpitch League (NPFL).

GREGORY BECOMES FIRST NEW BIG 12 HEAD COACH SINCE 2010 The Big 12 Conference will have a first-year head coach roaming the third base baseline for the time since 2010 this season with new Red Raider skipper Adrian Gregory. The last time the conference had a new head coach making a debut came in 2010 when current Kansas skipper Megan Smith and former Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays joined the league. The conference has not experienced much turnover in the coaching ranks during its existence as Oklahoma’s Patty Gasso and Texas’ Connie Clark have been with both programs since before the league formed in 1996 while Baylor head coach Glenn Moore is entering his 15th season leading the Lady Bears.

RED RAIDERS IMPROVE TO 11-9 ALL-TIME IN SEASON OPENERS Texas Tech bumped its record in season openers to 11-9 all-time last weekend with its 5-3 victory over New Mexico State. The win marked the sixth time in the past seven years where the Red Raiders have opened the season with a victory. The only loss during that span came in 2014 when Tech fell, 4-3, to Akron. Tech had previously won each of its last five season openers, defeating Central Florida in 2009, Wisconsin in 2010, No. 16 BYU in 2011, San Diego State in 2012 and Central Florida in 2013.

The streak of five-consecutive wins in season openers marked the longest in program history.

TEXAS TECH STARTS ITS SEASON ON THE ROAD The Red Raiders will become accustomed to life on the road throughout the month of February as Texas Tech will play its first 21 games of the season away from home. Following its trip this weekend to Las Cruces, N.M., Tech will also travel to tournaments at Texas State, UT Arlington and McNeese State. The Red Raiders open their home slate on March 6 with a doubleheader against Utah Valley and UT Martin to begin the Texas Tech Invitational. The 21-game road trip is the longest Tech has gone to start the year without playing at home since the Red Raiders traveled for the first 22 games of the 2009 season.

RED RAIDERS FIRST BIG 12 PROGRAM TO OPEN 2015 SEASON Texas Tech was the first Big 12 program to open the 2015 season on Feb. 5 as the Red Raiders began their season with a 3 p.m. CT first pitch against New Mexico State. Oklahoma was the only other conference school to play that day as the Sooners faced DePaul in a 7:30 p.m. CT start in Hawaii. Tech closed Opening Day against Montana later that evening.

BETTIOL, THOMEY TRANSFER TO TEXAS TECH Both Devon Thomey and Jordan Bettiol will join the Red Raider program this season after transferring to Texas Tech this past fall. Thomey and Bettiol were two of the first signees Adrian Gregory secured soon after being named Texas Tech’s head coach last June. Thomey played one season at New Mexico State where she hit .309 with five RBI and 14 runs scored in 2014.

Bettiol, meanwhile, sat out the 2014 season after garnering second team All-Big Ten honors in 2013 after hitting .274 for the Huskers, including a team-high .400 clip during conference play alone. Her performance both at the plate and in the outfield helped lead Nebraska to the NCAA Women’s College World Series for the seventh time in program history.

2015 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL MCDONALD, LOCKE JOIN GREGORY AS PART OF INAUGURAL STAFF Soon after her hire last June as the seventh head coach in Texas Tech history, Adrian Gregory first act was to quickly assemble a highly-successful coaching staff around her. She succeeded with the hires of associate head coach Sharonda McDonald and assistant coach Amanda Locke. Two highly successful athletes during their respective playing careers, both McDonald and Locke were hired weeks following Gregory taking the position and immediately hit the ground running on the recruiting trail. McDonald, a former teammate of Gregory at Texas A&M, arrives at Tech after spending the previous two seasons as the volunteer assistant coach at LSU while Locke comes from Northwestern State where she served as pitching coach the past two years.

HOPSON, SCOTT ELECTED CO-CAPTAINS FOR 2015 The Red Raiders elected a pair of team captains prior to the seasons in senior Lea Hopson and junior Brooke Scott. In addition to being named a team captain, the duo will likely former the middle part of Texas Tech’s infield with Scott starting at second while Hopson will move to shortstop after spending the entire 2014 season at second. The two could also switch positions from time-to-time throughout the season as well. The two captains were elected in a vote by their teammates.

MILES LEADS GROUP OF RETURNERS AT THE PLATE Following one of the best freshman seasons in school history, Kierra Miles will be looked upon once again to boost the middle of the Texas Tech lineup after the sophomore hit .310 in 2014 with seven home runs and 36 RBI. The successful rookie campaign marked just the seventh time in program history where a Red Raider freshman has hit .300 or better in her first season. A native of Mustang, Oklahoma, Miles was one of four Tech players to hit above .300 while she finished second overall for RBI and tied for second in home runs. She will more than likely begin the year in the middle of the Tech lineup.

BELSHE MAKES MOVE BEHIND THE PLATE Possibly the biggest change for Texas Tech this season defensively will be seen behind the plate as senior Kristi Belshe added catching responsibilities this past fall. Belshe, who started primarily in left field as a junior, will split duties behind the plate with sophomore Brittany Lee, who similarly will see action at multiple positions across the diamond this season. Belshe arrived at Tech in 2014 after earned NJCAA All-American honors at Lake Land College in Illinois. She is the first Red Raider in program history to hail from the state of Hawaii.

HOPSON RETURNS WITH SPEED ON THE BASE PATHS Lea Hopson’s return for her senior season is plus for the Red Raiders in two ways. It gives Texas Tech a leader in the clubhouse as a team captain and also provides head coach Adrian Gregory some additional speed on the base paths. Hopson, who joined the Tech program last season after transferring from the College of Southern Idaho, finished 21-for-24 in stolen base attempts a year ago, ranking sixth overall in the Big 12. Among conference players returning this season, Hopson ranks third overall in the league only behind Shelby Davis (Oklahoma State) and Brittany Gomez (Iowa State).

Iowa State 0 2 GREGORY COMPILES CHALLENGING NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE In Adrian Gregory’s mind, “to be the best, you have to play the best.” The first-year head coach is going to put that motto to the test this season as Texas Tech significantly bolstered its non-conference schedule with games scheduled against four opponents in the preseason top-25 rankings. The Red Raiders will face No. 18 Nebraska early in the year on Feb. 7 before turning around two weeks later to face No. 25 DePaul twice on Feb. 20-22. Tech will also host No. 21 Tulsa for a pair of games on March 13-14 before closing non-conference play at No. 11 Washington, a NCAA Women’s College World Series participant a year ago. Including Big 12 games, the Red Raiders will face a total of nine opponents this season who advanced to a NCAA Regional a year ago.

RED RAIDERS SELECTED TO FACE TEXAS ON FOX SPORTS NET The April 25 softball game between Texas Tech and Texas at Rocky Johnson Field will air regionally on FOX Sports Net, the Big 12 Conference announced prior to the season. This is believed to be FSN’s first trip to Lubbock for a softball game since the network began covering the sport several years ago. The Red Raiders are no stranger to television coverage, though, with previous appearances on both FSN and ESPN. FSN also announced it will carry the April 18 game between Oklahoma and Baylor in Norman. The rest of the Big 12 television schedule will be announced Tuesday afternoon when ESPN releases its television picks for the entire 2015 season.

SCHWIRTLICH JOINS RED RAIDER ROSTER AT SEMESTER Texas Tech head coach Adrian Gregory announced prior to the season that former All-Southland Conference selection Kirsten Schwirtlich has joined the Red Raider softball program for the start of preseason practices. Schwirtlich, the 2013 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, will be forced to sit out the 2015 season due to NCAA transfer rules after arriving at Tech following a two-year career at Houston Baptist. The Corpus Christi, Texas native earned All-Southland Conference second team honors as a freshman at Houston Baptist in 2013 and then first team accolades the following year. She was also a third-team NFCA All-Region selection as a sophomore as well. Her transfer will give Gregory additional depth in the infield both defensively and at the plate. Schwirtlich hit .366 as a freshman in 2013, connecting on a team-leading 10 home runs while driving in 47 runs. She committed only one defensive error that season in over 80 chances as well. Schwirtlich followed up by compiling an impressive .411 average a year ago that once again featured impressive power numbers with nine home runs, 11 doubles, three triples and 38 RBI. She wrapped the season as the Southland Conference leader in batting average and among the league leaders in almost every other offensive category.
