• Texas Tech will take part in its first midweek series of the season Wednesday as the Red Raiders travel to face UTEP in a 2 p.m. CT doubleheader at Helen of Troy Field in El Paso.

• This will be the first of two midweek trips for the Red Raiders this year as Texas Tech will head to the greater northwest next week to face Seattle on March 18 and then No. 18 Washington the following day.

• Texas Tech will be stepping outside of tournament action for the second-straight year Wednesday as the Red Raiders swept a March 19 doubleheader with North Texas. Tech followed up by sweeping a three-game series with Texas State on March 21-22. All five games were at Rocky Johnson Field.

• Texas Tech will be making its first trip to El Paso since 2009 when the Red Raiders were swept in an April 23 doubleheader. Tech also traveled to UTEP in 2004 where the Red Raiders defeated the Miners, 4-0, on March 16.

• Texas Tech and UTEP met during the fall season with the Red Raiders pulling off a pair of routs, defeating the Miners, 15-2 and then 16-2, in El Paso.

• The UTEP doubleheader begins a busy next eight days for the Red Raiders, who will play nine games during that stretch, four of which that will come this weekend in the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic held at Rocky Johnson Field.

• The Red Raiders head into the doubleheader riding a three-game winning streak that was highlighted by a 13-5 run-rule victory over UT Arlington Sunday afternoon to close out the Texas Tech Invitational.

• The Texas Tech offense enters the UTEP doubleheader averaging just over 11 runs per game over its last three contests. The Red Raiders have combined for 34 runs during that span and 42 runs in the past seven games.

• The Red Raiders have turned into one of the top offenses in the Big 12 this season as Texas Tech currently ranks third with 145 runs scored and fourth in the league with a .308 batting average. Tech is currently on pace to finish with a batting average over .300 for just the third time in school history.

• Texas Tech is on pace to snap its single-season school record for stolen bases for a second-straight year as the Red Raiders have swiped 54 bags through the first 24 games of the season. Tech had only 45 stolen bases at this point a year ago before eventually finishing with 92 overall.

Texas Tech will be making its third trip all-time to El Paso on Wednesday afternoon as the Red Raiders previously traveled to face the Miners during the 2004 and 2009 seasons. Tech leads the all-time series against UTEP with a 6-2 advantage but is just 1-2 against the Miners in El Paso. The Red Raiders shut out UTEP, 4-0, in its first ever meeting in El Paso on March 16, 2004, but was swept, 2-1 and 5-1, in an April 23, 2009, doubleheader during its most-recent visit. The two schools last faced each other in 2012 when the Red Raiders handed UTEP a 5-2 setback during the Texas Shootout tournament held in Waco. This will be the fourth time where the two schools have met in a same-day doubleheader as the two schools also met in 2008 as well with the Red Raiders winning both games in Lubbock.

PLAYER TO WATCH...

Devon Thomey heads into Wednesday’s doubleheader at UTEP having hit safely in nine of her last 12 at-bats. Thomey totaled a .647 batting average (11-for-17) last weekend during the Texas Tech Invitational as she also drove in nine runs, four of which that came off her first career grand slam in Sunday’s run-rule victory over UT Arlington.

2015 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL ON DECK Texas Tech returns to Rocky Johnson Field this weekend for the fifth-annual Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic where the Red Raiders will host both Mississippi Valley State and Tulsa. Tech will face both schools in doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday before returning to the road once again to face both Seattle University and No. 18 Washington on March 18-19.

THOMEY BOASTS STRONG WEEKEND AT THE PLATE TO OPEN HOME SLATE Perhaps no Red Raider had a stronger home opening weekend than Devon Thomey during the Texas Tech Invitational.

Thomey, who was playing at Rocky Johnson Field for the first time as a Red Raider, hit a team-leading .647 (11-for-17) over the weekend to go along with nine RBI, four of whcih that came this past Sunday off her first career grand slam against UT Arlington. Thomey finished with at least two hits in each of Tech’s final three games, beginning with a career-best 4-for-5 performance Saturday afternoon against UT Martin. Her four hits marked a career high and were also matched the most for a Red Raider this season. In addition to posting at least two hits in each of the final three games, Thomey also recorded at least two RBI during that span as well. She enters the UTEP doubleheader having hit safely in nine of her past 12 at-bats.

FULTZ, THOMEY BOTH CONNECT ON GRAND SLAMS AGAINST UT ARLINGTON Texas Tech’s ability to hit the long ball was on full display this past Sunday against UT Arlington as the Red Raiders went deep three times, highlighted by a pair of grand slams by Ashley Fultz and Devon Thomey, the first in each of their careers. Fultz erased an early two-run deficit with her grand slam in the first inning. Thomey, meanwhile, provided the game-winning runs, breaking up a 5-5 tie in the fourth with her grand slam to center field that was part of a nine-run inning for the Red Raiders. It is believed to be the first time in school history where Tech has connected on two grand slams in the same game.

BETTIOL’S IMPRESSIVE START PLACES HER AMONG BIG 12 LEADERS Jordan Bettiol enters this week as the Big 12 leader in hits as she has totaled 35 base knocks already over the first 24 games of the season. Bettiol, who is third currently in the conference with a .461 batting average, leads Tech with 11 multiple-hit games already this year, four of which that have come in the past five games. Like teammate Devon Thomey, Bettiol also recorded a successful weekend during the Texas Tech Invitational, hitting .529 overall (9-for-17) with four RBI and three stolen bases. In addition to leading the conference in hits, Bettiol also ranks among the league leaders in runs scored (21), stolen bases (9), walks (14) and on-base percentage (.544).

MILES RECORDS CAREER-HIGH SIX RBI AGAINST UT MARTIN Kierra Miles recorded her best performance as a Red Raider to date last Saturday in Texas Tech’s 13-9 come-from-behind victory over UT Martin as she finished 4-for-5 against the Skyhawks while driving in a career-high six RBI. Miles, who ended just a home run shy of the cycle, also notched a career high for hits with a two-run triple in the third, a RBI single in the fourth and then a pair of doubles in the sixth and seventh innings. Her big day at the plate pushed Miles to 22 RBI for the season, which is tied for seventh currently in the Big 12. She is second on the team for RBI as Devon Thomey currently ranks third in the conference after driving in 25 runs already this season.

TEXAS TECH OFF TO THE RACES - AGAIN Since taking over the Texas Tech softball program last summer, Adrian Gregory has insisted she wants the Red Raiders to be among the most aggressive teams in the country on the base paths. Through the first four weekends of the season, the first-year head coach has succeeded on that goal as the Red Raiders are currently second in the Big 12 Conference with 54 stolen bases, eight of which that came Feb. 28 against Memphis, tying the Tech single-game record that was previously set on March 17, 2001, against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tech is well on pace to snap the single-season school record for a second-straight year as well as its 54 stolen bases are nine more than the Red Raiders had totaled through 24 games in 2014. Tech has had 12 different players swipe a bag so far this season, led by Brooke Scott who already has a career-high 13 stolen bases.

Through 26 games 51 RED RAIDERS FINDING WAYS TO COME FROM BEHIND Texas Tech has proved no lead is safe this year as the Red Raiders have rallied from deficits to win six times already this year, including three times last weekend alone. Tech trailed by as many as five runs last Saturday in its 13-9 come-from-behind victory over UT Martin. It marked the second time this season where the Red Raiders have overcome a five-run deficit to win as Tech previously trailed UT Arlington by a similar margin on Feb. 20 before pulling off a 10-6 victory. The five-run comeback against UT Arlington marked the largest deficit Tech has overcome in a victory since the Red Raiders rallied from a similar five-run deficit to defeat No. 19 Texas A&M on April 18, 2012.

THOMEY ALREADY APPROACHING SINGLE-SEASON RECORD FOR TRIPLES Through just over the first month of her Red Raider career, Devon Thomey is already on pace to place her name in the Texas Tech record book. Thomey recorded her third triple of the season on Feb. 28 against McNeese State as she gave the Red Raiders a 4-3 lead heading into the seventh. Thomey is the 10th Red Raider in school history to record at least three triples in a season. She is just one shy of the Tech single-season record set by the likes of Leah Legler (2008), Denise Jackson (1997-98) and Kim Martinez (1997).

BETTIOL NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Texas Tech junior Jordan Bettiol was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Feb. 24 after she reached in 13 of 16 plate appearances at the UT Arlington Invitational. Bettiol hit a team-leading .769 (10-for-13) over the course of the weekend, helping lead the Red Raiders (9-6) to a 4-0 showing with wins over the likes of DePaul, a preseason top-25 team, as well as host UT Arlington. The Nebraska transfer recorded at least two hits in three of Tech’s four games with the only exception coming in a 12-0 rout of Prairie View A&M. Bettiol finished 1-for-1 overall against the Panthers with a pair of walks and two stolen bases. Bettiol totaled an impressive .813 on-base percentage to go along with an .846 slugging percentage over the four games. She also stole four bases and drove in four runs, two of which that came in a 9-1 run-rule of DePaul in the tournament opener Friday.

BETTIOL RECORDS IMPRESSIVE AVERAGE TO START THE SEASON Jordan Bettiol made quite the debut over the first 15 games of the season as the junior transfer from Nebraska totaled a team-leading .500 (24-for-48) batting average in that span. Dating back to the 2007 season, her average was the highest for a Red Raider who has played in each of the first 15 games of a season. Bettiol, who is currently hitting .461 for the season, leads all Red Raiders with seven multiple-hit games already this year, three of which that came at the UT Arlington Invitational. The College Station, Texas native enters this weekend second in the Big 12 Conference with 26 base hits. She also ranks among the conference leaders in runs scored, walks and on-base percentage.

WARNECKE PROVIDES POWER IN MIDDLE OF THE LINEUP Brittany Warnecke has pretty much solidified herself in the middle of the Texas Tech lineup through the first five weeks of the season as the sophomore has helped lead the Red Raiders with three home runs and 15 RBI through the first 24 games of the season. Warnecke connected on two home runs and seven RBI alone during the CenturyLink Classic as she went deep in both games against UTSA. In addition to her power numbers, Warnecke, who recorded just one home run and three RBI as a freshman in 2014, is hitting .266 for the season which currently ranks fourth on the team.

THOMEY FINDING THE GAPS EARLY IN THE YEAR Through the first five weeks of the season, there are not many gaps in the outfield that Devon Thomey has not found thus far. Thomey, a sophomore transfer from New Mexico State, leads the Red Raiders with a .734 slugging percentage after recording 11 extra-base hits through the first 24 games. Thomey has powered four home runs already this season to go along with a four doubles and three triples while also stealing 10 bases as Tech’s normal designated player. Her .734 slugging percentage currently ranks fifth in the Big 12 Conference as she is also among the league leaders in triples, RBI, stolen bases, and total bases.

MAISEL RECORDS FIRST CAREER WIN OVER UMKC Texas Tech sophomore Mattison Maisel recorded her first career victory on Feb. 21 in a 9-6 victory over UMKC. Maisel, who is in her first year as part of the main pitching rotation, tossed a career-high 3.1 innings of relief against UMKC where she allowed just one run off four hits. Her 4.20 earned-run average (ERA) is currently the second-lowest on the team.

RED RAIDERS RECORD 600TH CAREER WIN IN PROGRAM HISTORY OVER MONTANA Texas Tech’s second win of the season - an 8-5 decision over Montana - marked the 600th in program history as the Red Raiders are now 600-652-4 overall. Tech, now in its 24th season of softball, started its program in 1981 before disbanding it following the 1985 season. Softball returned as a sponsored intercollegiate sport in 1996 with the start of the Big 12 Conference.

RED RAIDERS OPEN 2015 WITH COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN OVER NEW MEXICO STATE In just its first game of the 2015 season, Texas Tech proved that no lead was safe, even after six innings. The Red Raiders, facing a 3-2 deficit in the top of the seventh against New Mexico State, used a three-run inning to pull off a 5-3 victory over the Aggies, the first in the career of head coach Adrian Gregory. Devon Thomey highlighted the come-from-behind victory with a two-run double to the wall in center field that scored both Susan Welborn and Kristi Belshe. Tech previously tied the game on a wild pitch that allowed Brooke Scott to scamper home from third base. It marked only the third time since the start of the 2012 season where the Red Raiders have won despite trailing at the start of the seventh inning.

THOMEY TURNS IN MEMORABLE OPENING DAY IN RETURN TO LAS CRUCES Opening Day for Devon Thomey was not just an opportunity for a fresh start with Texas Tech but also a chance to return to New Mexico State where she played her 2014 freshman season. Thomey made the most of her return by going 4-for-7 with six RBI in an Opening Day doubleheader against New Mexico State and Montana. The performance included the game-winning hit against the Aggies as Thomey drilled a double to center field in the seventh inning that scored both Susan Welborn and Kristi Belshe and gave Tech a 5-3 lead it would not relinquish. Thomey followed up by going 3-for-3 with four RBI later that evening against Montana, finishing a double shy of the cycle after a RBI triple in the second and then a two-run homer, the first in her collegiate career in the fourth inning. Her six RBI on the day were one more than her entire total from 2014.

CUSTER MOVES TO SECOND ALL-TIME IN WINS WITH WIN OVER NEW MEXICO STATE All it took was seven innings into the 2015 season for Cara Custer to move into sole possession of second place for wins in the Texas Tech career record book. Custer, a native of Tacoma, Washington, tossed seven strong innings in the season opener against New Mexico State where she picked up career win No. 52 to pass Ashly Jacobs (2007-10) for second all-time in program history. In addition to her rise up the career wins chart, Custer is also chasing several other records as well, including saves, appearances, games started, complete games, ERA and strikeouts.

Nebraska was the only team to score off Maisel as the right-hander recorded shutout appearances against both Montana and UTSA. GREGORY BECOMES FOURTH RED RAIDER HEAD COACH TO WIN DEBUT Adrian Gregory became the fourth head coach in school history to record a victory in their debut leading the Red Raiders last weekend when Texas Tech overcame a seventh inning deficit to top New Mexico State, 5-3. Gregory joins the likes of Bobby Reeves (2001), Amy Suiter (2009) and Shanon Hays (2010) as Texas Tech head coaches to win in their debut. Adrian Gregory 2015 at New Mexico State W, 5-3 GREGORY MAKES DEBUT LEADING THE RED RAIDERS Texas Tech made its official debut under Adrian Gregory on Feb. 5 as the first-year head coach began her tenure with a 5-3 victory over New Mexico State after being hired as the seventh coach in program history this past June. Gregory, a longtime Texas native, arrives at Tech following four seasons as an assistant coach at Sam Houston State. One of the top hitters in Texas A&M history during her collegiate playing career, Gregory has also made coaching stops at Utah and the New England Riptide, formerly of the National Pro Fastpitch League (NPFL).

GREGORY BECOMES FIRST NEW BIG 12 HEAD COACH SINCE 2010 The Big 12 Conference will have a first-year head coach roaming the third base baseline for the time since 2010 this season with new Red Raider skipper Adrian Gregory. The last time the conference had a new head coach making a debut came in 2010 when current Kansas skipper Megan Smith and former Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays joined the league. The conference has not experienced much turnover in the coaching ranks during its existence as Oklahoma’s Patty Gasso and Texas’ Connie Clark have been with both programs since before the league formed in 1996 while Baylor head coach Glenn Moore is entering his 15th season leading the Lady Bears.

RED RAIDERS IMPROVE TO 11-9 ALL-TIME IN SEASON OPENERS Texas Tech bumped its record in season openers to 11-9 all-time last weekend with its 5-3 victory over New Mexico State. The win marked the sixth time in the past seven years where the Red Raiders have opened the season with a victory. The only loss during that span came in 2014 when Tech fell, 4-3, to Akron. Tech had previously won each of its last five season openers, defeating Central Florida in 2009, Wisconsin in 2010, No. 16 BYU in 2011, San Diego State in 2012 and Central Florida in 2013.

The streak of five-consecutive wins in season openers marked the longest in program history.

TEXAS TECH STARTS ITS SEASON ON THE ROAD The Red Raiders will become accustomed to life on the road throughout the month of February as Texas Tech will play its first 19 games of the season away from home. Following its trip to Las Cruces, N.M., Tech will also travel to tournaments at Texas State, UT Arlington and McNeese State. The Red Raiders open their home slate on March 6 with a doubleheader against Utah Valley and UT Martin to begin the Texas Tech Invitational. The 19-game road trip is the longest Tech has gone to start the year without playing at home since the Red Raiders traveled for the first 22 games of the 2009 season.

RED RAIDERS FIRST BIG 12 PROGRAM TO OPEN 2015 SEASON Texas Tech was the first Big 12 program to open the 2015 season on Feb. 5 as the Red Raiders began their season with a 3 p.m. CT first pitch against New Mexico State. Oklahoma was the only other conference school to play that day as the Sooners faced DePaul in a 7:30 p.m. CT start in Hawaii. Tech closed Opening Day against Montana later that evening.

BETTIOL, THOMEY TRANSFER TO TEXAS TECH Both Devon Thomey and Jordan Bettiol will join the Red Raider program this season after transferring to Texas Tech this past fall. Thomey and Bettiol were two of the first signees Adrian Gregory secured soon after being named Texas Tech’s head coach last June. Thomey played one season at New Mexico State where she hit .309 with five RBI and 14 runs scored in 2014.

Bettiol, meanwhile, sat out the 2014 season after garnering second team All-Big Ten honors in 2013 after hitting .274 for the Huskers, including a team-high .400 clip during conference play alone. Her performance both at the plate and in the outfield helped lead Nebraska to the NCAA Women’s College World Series for the seventh time in program history.

MCDONALD, LOCKE JOIN GREGORY AS PART OF INAUGURAL STAFF Soon after her hire last June as the seventh head coach in Texas Tech history, Adrian Gregory first act was to quickly assemble a highly-successful coaching staff around her. She succeeded with the hires of associate head coach Sharonda McDonald and assistant coach Amanda Locke. Two highly successful athletes during their respective playing careers, both McDonald and Locke were hired weeks following Gregory taking the position and immediately hit the ground running on the recruiting trail. McDonald, a former teammate of Gregory at Texas A&M, arrives at Tech after spending the previous two seasons as the volunteer assistant coach at LSU while Locke comes from Northwestern State where she served as pitching coach the past two years.

HOPSON, SCOTT ELECTED CO-CAPTAINS FOR 2015 The Red Raiders elected a pair of team captains prior to the seasons in senior Lea Hopson and junior Brooke Scott. In addition to being named a team captain, the duo will likely former the middle part of Texas Tech’s infield with Scott starting at second while Hopson will move to shortstop after spending the entire 2014 season at second. The two could also switch positions from time-to-time throughout the season as well. The two captains were elected in a vote by their teammates.

MILES LEADS GROUP OF RETURNERS AT THE PLATE Following one of the best freshman seasons in school history, Kierra Miles will be looked upon once again to boost the middle of the Texas Tech lineup after the sophomore hit .310 in 2014 with seven home runs and 36 RBI. The successful rookie campaign marked just the seventh time in program history where a Red Raider freshman has hit .300 or better in her first season. A native of Mustang, Oklahoma, Miles was one of four Tech players to hit above .300 while she finished second overall for RBI and tied for second in home runs. She will more than likely begin the year in the middle of the Tech lineup.

BELSHE MAKES MOVE BEHIND THE PLATE Possibly the biggest change for Texas Tech this season defensively will be seen behind the plate as senior Kristi Belshe added catching responsibilities this past fall. Belshe, who started primarily in left field as a junior, will split duties behind the plate with sophomore Brittany Lee, who similarly will see action at multiple positions across the diamond this season. Belshe arrived at Tech in 2014 after earned NJCAA All-American honors at Lake Land College in Illinois. She is the first Red Raider in program history to hail from the state of Hawaii.

HOPSON RETURNS WITH SPEED ON THE BASE PATHS Lea Hopson’s return for her senior season is plus for the Red Raiders in two ways. It gives Texas Tech a leader in the clubhouse as a team captain and also provides head coach Adrian Gregory some additional speed on the base paths. Hopson, who joined the Tech program last season after transferring from the College of Southern Idaho, finished 21-for-24 in stolen base attempts a year ago, ranking sixth overall in the Big 12. Among conference players returning this season, Hopson ranks third overall in the league only behind Shelby Davis (Oklahoma State) and Brittany Gomez (Iowa State).

The Red Raiders, who finished 35-19 a year ago, have posted 30 or more wins in each of the past five years, tying with Oklahoma and Texas for the longest streak currently in the conference.

Iowa State 0 2 GREGORY COMPILES CHALLENGING NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE In Adrian Gregory’s mind, “to be the best, you have to play the best.” The first-year head coach is going to put that motto to the test this season as Texas Tech significantly bolstered its non-conference schedule with games scheduled against four opponents in the preseason top-25 rankings. The Red Raiders will face No. 18 Nebraska early in the year on Feb. 7 before turning around two weeks later to face No. 25 DePaul twice on Feb. 20-22. Tech will also host No. 21 Tulsa for a pair of games on March 13-14 before closing non-conference play at No. 11 Washington, a NCAA Women’s College World Series participant a year ago. Including Big 12 games, the Red Raiders will face a total of nine opponents this season who advanced to a NCAA Regional a year ago.

RED RAIDERS SELECTED TO FACE TEXAS ON FOX SPORTS NET The April 25 softball game between Texas Tech and Texas at Rocky Johnson Field will air regionally on FOX Sports Net, the Big 12 Conference announced prior to the season. This is believed to be FSN’s first trip to Lubbock for a softball game since the network began covering the sport several years ago. The Red Raiders are no stranger to television coverage, though, with previous appearances on both FSN and ESPN. FSN also announced it will carry the April 18 game between Oklahoma and Baylor in Norman. The rest of the Big 12 television schedule will be announced Tuesday afternoon when ESPN releases its television picks for the entire 2015 season.

SCHWIRTLICH JOINS RED RAIDER ROSTER AT SEMESTER Texas Tech head coach Adrian Gregory announced prior to the season that former All-Southland Conference selection Kirsten Schwirtlich has joined the Red Raider softball program for the start of preseason practices. Schwirtlich, the 2013 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, will be forced to sit out the 2015 season due to NCAA transfer rules after arriving at Tech following a two-year career at Houston Baptist. The Corpus Christi, Texas native earned All-Southland Conference second team honors as a freshman at Houston Baptist in 2013 and then first team accolades the following year. She was also a third-team NFCA All-Region selection as a sophomore as well. Her transfer will give Gregory additional depth in the infield both defensively and at the plate. Schwirtlich hit .366 as a freshman in 2013, connecting on a team-leading 10 home runs while driving in 47 runs. She committed only one defensive error that season in over 80 chances as well. Schwirtlich followed up by compiling an impressive .411 average a year ago that once again featured impressive power numbers with nine home runs, 11 doubles, three triples and 38 RBI. She wrapped the season as the Southland Conference leader in batting average and among the league leaders in almost every other offensive category.
