FEATURE
ASAUVAGE by Hope Destyn
How did you make the leap from stylist to designer? While I was personal shopping for women: bringing the product to the clients’ homes instead of them having to travel, liaising with labels and working a lot with the ateliers. Which I did for years. The husbands were signing the cheques and their wives looked really good so they started asking, “What about me?” But none of the ready-to-wear clothes were fitting them and I found that I could actually create something which bridged classic and fashion. I met up with a tailor and fused the Savile Row techniques to fashion. Men don’t change their clothes every six months. I need to make them feel comfortable instead of them seeing something too stylish and thinking, “It’s not really me.” How did the A & Lamb Team begin? Lamb started out as a friendly community project (laughs). We came to know each other, two tall guys across the top of a crowded room. Then one day he said, “What do you do?” and I told him about my personal shopping. This was just before he got into TV. I took him on as was one of my private clients for several years before coming on board as my business partner. I couldn’t ask for a better business partner and friend, it can be somewhat challenging to work with us creative types.

For both of the collections, Captains and Natives and the most recent, Black Volta, you shot the look books yourself. How did that come about? As my silhouette was a similar one across the 11 pieces, I didn’t need to use a model, so I decided to start shooting on real people. The first collection was shot on ‘Captains of industry’, people known in their field, alongside generally unknown characters who were prominent in their community, ‘Natives’. Black Volta was shot with my family and people I met on my recent visit to Ghana, the first time I been there for 11 years. What is the overall ethos behind the label? Adrien Sauvage: It’s the idea of ‘This is not a Suit’. It is a lifestyle, I make clothes for people who don’t necessarily wear suits. By shooting the collection not on models, by creating the short films and the photographic series’, it’s aimed at getting a younger guy and a new community of clients interested in that traditional process. The long-term plan? There still so much to explore, when I feel like I’m at the point where I’m creating a superior product, is when I will jump into that. I’m in a really good, positive place where I can start with suits and say, “OK, I’m going to work on the classic jean.” Take a Levi’s 501 or something like that, sample it and just make one piece that is good and wearable. That’s what I’m all about. I’m not in a rush, I’m not fly-by-night or creating a hype. The long term plan is longevity…

sports a brand new contemporary look that ditches most of the old Parisian brasserie trappings in favour of grey walls hung with examples of in-vogue Brit art and modern cartoons, a lush bar and silver lampshades dangling above the tables.
