PUMP UP THE JAM by Candice Stephens

Colour between the Lines If you are still enjoying playing with colour-blocking, a trend from seasons past, then you are in luck as it seems quite certain to stay for the summer and Autumn. If you have not given this bold trend a try, then we urge you to start with accessories and work your way in as there is nothing more liberating than wearing colour. And to be even more fashion-forward, do bold colourful stripes with it, as seen on the runways at Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Cedric Charlier and Roksanda Ilincic, who has remained loyal to this trend.

We have put together some key pieces that will inspire you to try this hot trend which you will be seeing a lot more of.

COMPテ年ERE MAGAZINE

FEATURE Loren Wohl, a New York based photographer is making quite a name for himself across the pond. With an enigmatic ability to capture crisp, clear imagery, one feels they could reach out and touch his subjects through his lens. Specialising in concert photography and portraiture, he is fast becoming one to watch. He has toured with Skrillex, Dillon Francis, and Flosstradamus, and his work has been published in Billboard, Rolling Stone, SPIN and Time Out New York to name a few. His work has also been featured in Complex, Elite Daily, and he has been interviewed by The Wall Street Journal and The Strobist for his forward-thinking approach to photography.

Wohl As fame beckons, this down to earth maverick indulges us with some cunning tricks he has learnt along the way. Kanye West I was an intern for Fool’s Gold Records and took this during their 2010 CMJ showcase where Kanye was a secret guest. I like this photo for being selfexplanatory. It’s no secret that Kanye has a large personality, and I think this shows that. I find it fascinating that photography can present things for what they are and for what they aren’t. Capturing the same moment from a different angle could communicate

something entirely different. Brooklyn Bowl / October 23rd, 2010. Katy Perry This photo serves as a reminder that you have to break the rules in order to get ahead. Katy Perry’s publicist asked that photographers shoot from the soundboard, at the opposite side of the room. This is very common when photographing big artists in large venues. At the time my longest lens was a 50mm. That didn’t give me much reach, so I had to sneak up front with the tweens and their moms. It was worth it for the shot. This was taken at NYC’s now closed Roseland Ballroom. Roseland Ballroom / November 8th, 2010. Kid Cudi Looking back on this image, I can see myself developing an attraction to back/sidelit imagery that I feel defines my style today. For me, a photo is comprised of what is and isn’t visible. The sense of ambiguity makes musicians look larger than life. Roseland Ballroom / April 22nd, 2011. Danny Brown Sometimes access plays a key factor in the images you’re able to create. As the staff photographer for MoMA PS1, I was able to shoot from behind the stage to put the brick in the background. Music photographers are often restricted to shooting from the photo pit in front of the stage. Altering your perspective will lead to taking images you wouldn’t normally capture. It’s important to constantly put yourself in situations where you feel uncomfortable to improve your craft. MoMA PS1 / August 25th, 2012. Tame Impala This photo is why I’m so drawn to photographing musicians. Capturing images like this requires luck and timing. It’s the perfect storm of edgy lighting, an unforgiving guitar solo from Kevin Parker, and a lens flare to further polish the image. Terminal 5 / February 19th, 2013. COMPÔNERE MAGAZINE

Comedy For Relief By Sarah Knight Saving and altering the qualities of lives forever, we can never underestimate the incredible impact this charity has on lives with less across the UK and Africa. We are delighted to announce that Brit and Grammy award winning superstar Sam Smith will be collaborating with Oscar winner John Legend to record a special version of Sam’s song Lay Me Down, making it the official single for Red Nose Day and Comic Relief. Sam Smith and John Legend will perform the ballad together for the first and only time on Comic Relief – on Friday 13th March on BBC One, where their one-off performance will be broadcast live from the London Palladium. The original song is featured on Sam’s multiplatinum debut album In the Lonely Hour and this new version is being re-released as a oneoff single to raise money for Comic Relief. The track is available from 9th March to download on iTunes and the single is available to buy exclusively in Sainsbury’s. Sam Smith has said: “Lay Me Down holds a very special place in my heart, not only did I perform it at the Brits, I’m now going to perform it live on the Red Nose Day show with the extremely talented John Legend, which is so exciting. I recently visited a Comic Relief funded project in my home town which supports the young LGBT community in London. I’m extremely proud that my single will help raise money for projects like this and many others in the UK and across Africa.” John Legend was equally as excited to collaborate with Sam saying: “Sam is such a talented artist. We’ve been looking forward to working together for a while now. I’m so glad we could collaborate on such a great song and for such a great cause.” Universal will donate 100% of its profits from the sale of the single to Comic Relief. TRAVEL

Essaouira Morocco By Malcolm Davis

Portuguese, French and Moorish architecture frame the maze-like streets of Essaouira, a charming and vibrant port and resort town on the Atlantic Ocean. Couples and families alike stroll the nearby beaches of Cape Sim and Sidi Kaouki, which also attract surfers of all kinds. Relaxation is easy to find here, as is a bus to Marrakech, for those looking for a day to explore more of what this country has to offer. Essaouira has always felt a little exclusive, because of the notion that it is expensive and beyond the reach of most travellers, in fact it’s an extremely laid-back town offering plenty of rich cultural experiences. Until now, it’s been a hassle to get there. British travellers have had to fly to Marrakech or Agadir, before taking a two and-a-halfhour taxi transfer. Now, with Easyjet launching direct flights from Luton in May, this atmospheric Atlantic port is set to be transformed into one of Morocco’s hottest destinations. The souks are relatively hassle-free, the restaurants have fabulous views of the crashing waves and the beaches are vast and aplenty. Stay in the centre of town at Dar Adul, left, (doubles from £43 B&B), or in the countryside, 15 minutes from the city centre at the tranquil Les Jardin des Douars, bottom right, (doubles from £79 B&B) which offers a luxurious stay with very reasonable prices.
