Get off the

rollercoaster

by Anouska Forte

F

or many years fat has been the fall guy for society’s increasing waistline. Whilst consuming too many calories from fat is not a good idea (as it contains more calories per gram than either protein or carbohydrate) the body needs good fats to carry out

vital processes and should not be cut drastically from your diet. No, the real culprit for our increasing girth is refined carbohydrates and sugar. But why? Although not particularly new or ground breaking, many people are unaware of the process that produces fat storage through too much sugar consumption. Adele Wolstenhulme, Nutritional Therapist and Director of Inside Out Nutrition (UK) Ltd explains: “Put very simply, our body and our brain require sugar in the form of glucose for energy. The quantity of glucose in the blood is kept within a tight range via the hormones insulin and glucagon, because when blood sugar gets too high it becomes dangerous for the body and can lead to diabetes, blindness and eventually brain damage. And when it becomes too low we become tired, hungry and have difficulty thinking clearly. “Carbohydrates are the main fuel source for glucose, found in bread, pasta, potatoes and all grains and cereals. Vegetables and fruit generally contain higher levels of the sugar fructose, which is released slowly into the blood. Beans and legumes contain carbohydrates and protein mixed together which allow the glucose to be taken in more slowly. If we have too much glucose entering the blood spiking our blood sugar levels throughout the day, insulin is overworking to transport the sugar into our cells. So what’s the problem with that? “The problem is pretty simple. Most of us are not Olympic athletes and we are simply not burning off all the energy we are consuming when we eat refined and sugary foods. The more frequently our blood sugar is raised the more insulin is produced and the more fat is laid down. So if we eat too many of these foods too often we end up riding the energy rollercoaster.

“I’m sure most people are familiar with that urgent need for a ‘quick fix’ to pick you back up again, and reach for a biscuit or sugary snack to do just that. But then the whole cycle starts again and it won’t be long before we feel tired again and need another biscuit. The effect on our waistlines may be obvious as we notice the inches piling on. But most importantly we are putting ourselves at greater risk for major health problems.” So what to do about it? “The key is to keep insulin under control by choosing foods that don’t ‘spike’ your blood sugar levels. The good news is that there are a few simple things you can do to balance your blood sugar, with the help of your Nutritional Therapist. Here are a few suggestions: Eat breakfast – this maintains blood sugar levels for a long period of time and avoids midmorning cravings. Choose foods that release sugar slowly into the blood. These are called low Glycaemic Index (GI) foods. They include wholegrain bread/pasta, brown or basmati rice, oats, fruit & vegetables, new or sweet potatoes (boiled) and pulses. These foods are also high in fibre, which helps to slow down the uptake of sugar into the blood. Avoid processed “white” foods where the fibre has been stripped out. Eat protein with every meal/snack. Protein slows glucose absorption. Choose chicken, fish, natural yoghurt, cheese, nuts and seeds. Eat 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. Little and often is better than skipping breakfast and eating one large meal per day! Ensure your dinner plate is filled with half vegetables, one-third carbohydrate and one-third lean protein. So, the long and short of it, get off the rollercoaster and reap the benefits! www.inside-outnutrition.com

British Electro Pop Queen by Chloe Davidson

SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 4

COMPテ年ERE MAGAZINE

T

his is a big year of great numbers for Sophie Ellis Bexter, after her successful tenth year as the unrivalled British electro pop queen, Sophie releases her fourth album ‘Straight to the heart’ in July. Her music is a mixture of mainstream pop, disco, nu-disco, and 1980s

electronic influences. It’s patently obvious that her new album is something to get excited about, it’s energetic and unapologetic. She tells us in a no nonsense sort of way, “I have been doing this a while now, so its full steam ahead on artistic freedom”. Perhaps it’s the trust and rapport that grows naturally between the team you work with. Sophie has stuck with her record label Polydor/Fascination and has been fortunate enough to have them stick by her. Its safe to say S-E-B has evolved her sound fantastically well over a glitzy fun speckled decade in the limelight. Firing on all cylinders after baby number two, she has maintained her modelesque figure effortlessly. We eagerly catch up with Sophie Ellis to find out how she manages motherhood with..well, everything. She once warned – “it’s a assorted bag of tricks I have learnt to pull”, juggling young children, with a recording career, international tours and lets not forget her ongoing contract as the face of cosmetics giant Rimmel. She tells us ‘its not without its challenges’. “People always ask how do you mange it all. I have pretty much grown up in an environment where my parents worked unconventional hours. Somehow me and my husband Richard manage to slot it all together too”. I’m having a great time at the moment. “I’m very lucky to still enjoy what I do, there is nothing more unappealing than a jaded pop star” “It’s never been better. My family are the most important thing to me, they make it all worth it.” While this yummy mummy might be the ultimate pop starlet, she’s no pushover– she was heavily involved with all parts of ‘Straight From The Heart’, co-writing much of it and working with ‘the dream team’ of writer/producers that includes Freemasons, Greg Kurstin, Calvin Harris, Cathy Dennis, Metronomy, Richard X and Armin Van Buuren. Freemasons, have two songs on the record. The first, Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer) a floor stomping track that inherently makes you want to shake the proverbial leg! A phenomenal success in the UK, Europe and Stateside. Its seems Sophie remembers her jaunts to Russia most.. all eight of them, in the last year. “I loved it out there” she volunteers, “My Russian fans have been very supportive, the ladies know good fashion its incredible.” COMPÔNERE MAGAZINE

T

he second Freemasons song is her forthcoming single Bittersweet, out 2nd May, set to be a surefire rapturous pop moment of the spring. The last few years have been an incredible journey for Sophie. She

married Richard Jones (The Feeling’s bassist) in 2005 and clearly is as in love today as the day they tied the knot. “I have had baby number two..” Kit is one now and Sonny, six the lord of our manor. He has a real ear for music and can recognize mine and Richards tracks by just hearing the baseline.” Sophie laughs at moments shared with the three, husband Richard, young Sonny and herself dancing about in the living room. Somewhat the musical mad house! It’s clear that a fun and happy home environment is paramount to Sophie, making every effort to spend quality family time with Richard and her young boys. Her experiences of motherhood have put her world into perspective. Having found her inner survival mechanism after both her baby boys where born prematurely, “I have learned that when my kids are alright, everything else in my world is alright.” Since her last album Trip The Light Fantastic in 2007 Sophie hasn’t just been dancing about

her sitting room or purely holed up in the studio creating the pop soundtracks to 2010, she’s been on the road both on her own and performed a staggering 34 dates supporting Take That on their mega sell out Beautiful World tour. She loved this time with them, “they made me feel so comfortable ...they were the perfect hosts.” After her meteoritic rise ten years ago with Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love) with Italian producer Spiller, her debut solo release after her split with rock band The Audience- has recently been awarded the astonishing accolade of ‘the decade’s most played track on radio.’ Surely these are the things that make you feel like an accomplished artist? She replies “That’s so cool, I’m really proud of that.” Having survived a decade that has seen a plethora of pop star fatalities, she can still produce hits that are significant today. To date, Sophie competes with the cream of the crop, her mesmeric beauty proved an unexpected predecessor to Kate Moss as the face of Rimmel 2008 and her contract has been renewed. “ When I was asked to be the face of Rimmel I was chuffed.” Fittingly Sophie loves make up and is quite the vintage fashion queen. I like to think of her as more Audrey Hepburn with her dark hair and her waif like frame. While a total vision of beauty, she reveals, she has had it tough in her days. At school the boys never fancied her and had since received her fair share of ridicule at the way she looked when starting her music career. It seems she had it firmly placed in her mind that she was different. But now having the face of Rimmel under her belt she wants other young girls who never felt the prettiest to know looking different is a good thing. These days she accepts her unique beauty. The future is luminous for Sophie, clearly this electro pop queen still gets the thrills over what she does, she gushes, “I’m still completely excited by what I do.” Bitter Sweet single out 2nd May.

Renovation Man by Zita Savage

Q

What would you recommend to do first in any decorating project?

a

First and most important thing is the de-clutter of your house, There is no point in thinking about colour and style if you don’t know what space you have to work with. Essentially your house needs to be a blank canvas before you can start.

Q What are common mistakes made by homeowners when decorating and what is your advice on how to avoid or correct those mistakes?

a Its quite amazing how people tend to get colour selection wrong, what you have to do when choosing a colour is have a balance between personal taste and what the space needs. If you have a small room there is no point in painting it a dark colour, it is a simple principle of architecture and design but easily forgotten. Small rooms need lighter colours and in bigger spaces you can be more adventurous. Q Can you comment on colour trends and using your own personal style, which do you prefer?

a I love white, that is my own personal taste. I keep everything light and bright and bring interest to the décor through soft furnishings, paintings, picture frames the children’s art work, that type of thing. Q What are the Interior trends for 2010?

a Its interesting because over the last few years people have started to think more about quality, in this ecological age buyers would rather spend more and invest in good quality materials for longevity. Q Where do you like to shop for interior bargains?

a I personally spend way too much money, I love furniture and the authentic design classics. That is why they are not cheap but it is worth splashing out on a good piece of furniture that will never go out of fashion and stand the test of time. I go to shops like Vitra and would invest in a Charles and Ray Eames classic chair, which is absolutely timeless. Q What is your favourite room in your own home?

a My favourite room in my own home is my office, I love my office because it’s very calming and neutral and it’s my place to relax and just hide away and think.

Whether you are using a local builder or a design company, make sure you double check quotes and make a list of what you expect. Make sure everything is included in the price such as carting away rubbish. When selecting products find out how long they will take to deliver. Some pieces such as tap ware and toilets will be in stock, while spas and vanity units are custom made and could take up to a month to receive. If you are thinking about abandoning a shower for the sake of a bath it may jeopardise the re-sale value of your house. Wall mounted over-bath showers are just as good.

Carbon Black Edition at this year’s Geneva Auto Show in March.

Prevailingly sleek and powerful, the new special edition adds a typically understated flair to this acclaimed model. The new V12 Vantage Carbon Black Edition features specially formulated Carbon Black metallic paint; each car enduring 50 man-hours of hand painted works of art. The end result? An accomplished deep rich finishing. The iconic Aston Martin side strake has been fashioned from carbon fiber backed by a black mesh and complimented with black glossed 10 spoke diamond turned alloy wheels. Reaching speeds of 190mph and 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds, every component of the V12 Vantage has been honed for driving enjoyment, employing race-developed mechanisms and lashings of carbon-fibre which assist with a lower weight and aerodynamic speed. It is differentiated from the V8 version appearing wider than its predecessor. Ultimately this version is the definitive performance interpretation of the Vantage range, combining their most agile model with their most powerful engine. It simply represents an exemplary driving package, providing performance to ensure a dynamically thrilling and everyday useable driving experience.

Once inside the winebar, an up-beat dance version of Toni Braxton’s “Un-break My Heart” boomed onto a usually spacious floor and dining area. Tonight it was buzzing. As Andie and Tracy waded their way through the crowded bar area, Tracy spotted Marcus, seated across from him was the guy Andie was going to keep entertained for the evening. Waving, Marcus gestured for Tracy to take the seat across from him. As she walked towards him, their last encounter replayed in her mind. Marcus was a trend savvy architect with an intriguing sense of style. Their introduction had taken place last summer, at her cousin’s wedding. Marcus’s friend Terry, a broad shouldered engineer, relaxed in his seat as he locked eyes with Andie. “Oh my God.” Andie whispered to Tracy, as she tightened her grip around her friends wrist. Jake, was chiselled with a deep tan, subtly complemented by his black hair and piercing brown eyes. Jake got up and pulled out a chair for Andie to sit in. “Jake,” he beamed introducing himself, without missing a beat he glided as he pushed the chair in for her. Still in her trance-like state, she managed “Oh, mine’s Andie.” “Charmed.” Jake responded with a broad smile while sliding back into his seat. Slick, Andie thought to herself. Andie was oblivious to Tracy and Marcus’s attempts to make formal introductions. As the evening wore on, what Andie thought was going to be a long and uneasy night out, turned out to be smashing. After downing her third Mojito, Andie’s mood grew merrier, helplessly bursting into louder chuckles at Terry’s seemingly amusing comments. Bemused, Tracy was in disbelief by Andie’s flirtatious behaviour towards Terry. She was not exactly having a terrible night, but to her disappointment, Marcus hadn’t made quite the impression he did at her cousin’s wedding, probably because at the time the initial introduction was made she was rather tipsy. Just as Tracy was thinking of a way to wind down her very ordinary evening with Marcus, she caught a peripheral glimpse of Terry leaning over the table, whispering in Andie’s ear, as she turned to look fully to make sure her eyes were not deceiving her, Andie snapped her head back and let out a laugh so loud and teasingly seductive it crackled through her ears, reverberating through the space they occupied.

“How did you two

get to know each other then?”

“You two are having a blast of a time, aren’t you?” Tracy said, trying not to sound too irritated. “Well, we’re just trying to make the most of a very pleasant evening.” Terry heartily responded. Andie suddenly blurted out, “So Marcus, I hear you first met Tracy at Cindy’s wedding.”

“Oh yes, that’s right.” he replied. “How did you two get to know each other then?” Andie asked both Marcus and Terry. They initially both attempted to respond, then exchanged glances. Marcus awkwardly gestured to Terry to go ahead, Terry thought better of his answer saying it was a long story. After several trays of Sushi and Californian rolls accompanied by flowing drinks, they were all a little merry. As the night drew to a natural close, Terry felt in control of his faculties offering to drive Andie home. After an initial hesitation she agreed. Tracey turned to Marcus handing him her keys. “You can drive, my car’s new so be gentle with it, alright!” “Don’t worry I’ll be careful.” he replied with a wry smile. After the guys had split the bill the couples said their goodbyes and went their separate ways to what still seemed to be a night that was far from over. To be continued…
