Would you say there is such a thing as the perfect hat? My friends and clients know I rejoice in choosing the perfect hat for them. I get a real joy when I perch the right hat on someone’s head. I know that a single millimetre makes all the difference to the shape of an eyebrow. I am always playing with proportions.
What is it about your hats that set them apart from other milliners’ hats?
Some years later I studied fashion first. I didn’t

When did you first realise you were destined to become a milliner?
So your use of “Feathers” as a feature of your hats can be traced back to your childhood? I first used feathers, shed by my mother’s goose as a child to decorate hats where I grew up in Galway.
When I was a child I always liked making things like

feel like living, breathing material. You are drawing with them rather than just decorating a hat. It took a year for Antony’s Yokohama cockerels to grow their tail feathers long enough for me to painlessly clip them to create hats that were worn by Honor Fraser and Jodie Kidd on the catwalk.
How do you feel hats have changed since the years of old?
In your opinion do women buy hats for occasion or do they buy hats on a whim as they would a pair of shoes? We all need beautiful things that make us feel good and give us pleasure. Whether it’s a flower, a sunrise, or a hat! These things are the spice of

from a bygone era. I thought this was totally ridiculous and simply believed “we all have a head, so everybody has the possibility to wear a hat.” Hat making has been around since the beginning of time; it’s part of every culture. I haven’t invented the hat; I have just sort of made them sexy. I believe in beauty and elegance and communicating thoughts and dreams in a visual way. I love to work with my hands making something from nothing – turning 2 dimensional material into a 3 dimensional object. One of the most exciting aspects of my job is that I have an opportunity to influence how people see hats in the twenty-first century. And that is a very exciting job because I have a worldwide audience

There is that old saying ‘if you look good you feel good’. In your experience do hats really transform the way its wearer feels? There are no rules when it comes to French chic, it’s all about confidence, style, vivid colour and texture. The key to Parisian Panache is to be bold, daring, flamboyant, a little over-thetop and most of all dramatic. Tell your own theatrical story, some homes will embrace this style more than others, high ceilings and period features will be a definite advantage, although high skirting and crowning can be put in for that ultimate period feel. Add at least one or two patterns to your decor, which will add interest, a room done in solid colours, is just too boring. Get the look. Pattern sheer voile curtains £43 www.curtainsdrapesfactory.com

DINING OUT
Crazy Bear Crazy Bear restaurant in London’s Fitzrovia became a local landmark almost as soon as it opened. The madly stylish interior – including its supercool basement bar area – is Art Deco inspired and is one sexy setting for first dates as well as a super spot for groups of friends to gather. The menu seems to cover half of Asia, with sushi, sashimi, dim sum, pad Thai, Thai curries and Chinese stir-fried dishes. Bento boxes are available at lunch beginning in January, as is Sunday night cabaret and burlesque. The tasting menus are a great way for groups to sample the best flavours, or purist diners can stick to a single cuisine. Anything goes here. The atmosphere is ‘party’ and the super and award-winning cocktail menu goes a long way toward lift off. Lots of diners choose to begin and end their evening in the divine bar – this is a great spot to bring out-of-towners too. The dishes devised by a Head Chef Anusak Thepdamrongchaikagul draw on oriental traditions with the emphasis on Thai. The menu is long and enticing, with house specialities including hot and sour soup, veal escalope and slow-roast pork belly. The latter was the highlight of our visit, delightfully chewy and full of flavour, while Thai staples such as green curry and Pad Thai are handled with aplomb. The wine list is extensive and contains a number of gems – our excellent waiter steered us towards a wonderfully crisp Alain Brumont Gascogne 2002. www.crazybeargroup.co.uk

Start your meal in the sumptuous lounge bar for a relaxing drink before moving into Gaucho’s ultrachic dining room. The meat-centric menu at Gaucho also has an excellent range of veggie and seafood dishes. The Argentinean flavours are complimented by a variety of hand-picked boutique wines mainly from Argentina.
