Take with ASUS ASUS Eee Note

Don’t scribble your Christmas list with pen and paper — with the Eee Note, you can write, edit, sync and surf with the tap of a stylus

D

igital trumps analogue in just about every area of information delivery and now it’s set to revolutionise one of the oldest — pen and paper. The new Eee Note combines a whole host of technologies to create a handwriting and note-taking experience that not only mimics traditional tools, but surpasses them with features designed for the information age. The key innovation behind the Eee Note is the screen. Unlike other tablet computers with backlit displays that aren’t so easy on the eyes, the Eee Note uses a non-backlit, greyscale LCD that works just like paper, so you can read it even in bright daylight.

Perfect touch

The ASUS Eee Note’s 8" glass screen has a pressure sensitivity of 256 levels for a pointperfect pen-and-paper experience and can also be connected to a PC for use as an extremely accurate graphics tablet.

Complete digital toolkit

Handwritten notes, voice recording and digital photos are just three of the ASUS Eee Note’s useful tools — there’s also a built-in calculator, dictionary and even an MP3 player.

Christmas 2010

Whip out the supplied stylus and the glass surface feels just like paper too, while the 2,540dpi digitiser accuracy lets you draw with a precision that matches the sharpest pencil. A variety of templates let you quickly create documents to suit whatever task you’re involved in, while the built-in voice recorder and 2-megapixel camera let you capture other kinds of information to complement your notes. With fantastic battery and standby life and enough storage capacity for up to 20,000 documents, along with the ability to read and annotate both ebooks and office documents, the ASUS Eee Note puts the whole world within easy reach.

Cloud syncing

Built-in EverNote support lets you synchronise notes and documents over Wi-Fi to any of your other computers — and vice versa. So everything you create is safely backed up and accessible anywhere.

Long-lasting

Battery life of up to 10 hours of use gives the ASUS Eee Note the stamina for even the longest day, while the four-day standby time means you won’t have to worry about switching off between uses.

ASUS SonicMaster

There’s more to high-quality laptop audio than just an outstanding set of speakers, and ASUS SonicMaster technology defines a completely new standard for portable audio. From professional-grade codecs to sophisticated signal-processing technology and high-power amplifiers, every link in the audio chain is expertly tuned for true-tolife listening perfection. The result is the ASUS NX90 — a laptop that has to be heard to be believed.

L

aptops are a popular choice for people who don’t want a computer to dominate a room, but ASUS approached the design of the new NX90 from a new perspective. Developed together with award-winning designer David Lewis, this stunning home-entertainment laptop has a high-tech allure that will make it the focal point of any living space. It’s a profound style statement for people who like to stand out from the crowd. The beauty of the NX90 is more than skin deep, though — after all, shouldn’t a premium laptop like this sound as good as it looks? Thanks to its collaboration with the audio experts on the Bang &Olufsen ICEpower team, that’s just what ASUS has created. Externally, the largest speakers of any laptop flank the NX90’s screen, while internally, ASUS SonicMaster technology ensures that they’re driven by sound of superlative quality. A perfect blend of style and sonority, the ASUS NX90 not only sets a new standard for laptop audio quality, but for home-entertainment laptop design across the board.

ny laptop can handle multimedia, but how many are designed for it from the start? Not many, but ASUS’ new N Series has been created to excel at entertainment. The N Series packs a number of different technologies that enhance its video, audio and gaming ability. First, ASUS VideoMagic technology ensures the best possible picture quality for movies and video by automatically reducing noise and upscaling the image to suit the display resolution, while ASUS Splendid technology adjusts contrast and colour saturation to suit the material. NVIDIA® CUDA technology offloads work from the CPU to the graphics processor, accelerating everything from HD video playback to audio transcoding. And NVIDIA® Optimus technology boosts battery life by

optimising graphics performance to suit the task and power source. Built-in ASUS SonicMaster technology takes laptop audio to a whole new level. This combination of high-fidelity audio components and professional sound processing delivers a rich, detailed performance for all kinds of listening material. The final ingredient in the N Series recipe for multimedia mastery is USB 3.0. This latest version of the data-transfer standard is not only significantly faster at transferring files than its predecessor, but it reduces the recharge times of portable devices like MP3 players, too. So, if your current laptop’s multimedia prowess is letting you down, the uncompromising performance of the new ASUS N Series with powerful Intel® Core™ processors will open your eyes — and ears — to how it should be done.

With designs inspired by the sleek, angular lines of the F-117 stealth aircraft, both the G53Jw and G73Jw pack an arsenal of clever features beneath their matte black bodywork. Both models have innovative internal layouts that allow cool air to be drawn from below the keyboard and over the components, before being vented through two large exhausts at the rear. This unique approach keeps the palm rest cool too, which means you won’t start to sweat in the heat of the moment. Top-flight specifications include Intel® Core™ processors and NVIDIA® GeForce graphics for silky smooth frame rates, while optional solid-state hybrid hard drives ensure rapid level-load times. Processor socket

More than just a motherboard? This is where the CPU is plugged into the motherboard and secured in place with a locking mechanism.

other components, like the processor, memory and graphics card, all connect. The slots and sockets determine which components a motherboard can use and you’ll need one with a very specific processor socket if you want to use the latest Intel® Core™ processor, for example.

What is a motherboard?

Performance problems

The motherboard plays a large part in determining a computer’s performance and affects its specification. For consumer devices like smartphones, netbooks and notebooks, the motherboard is an integral part of the overall device and the other components are usually permanently attached to it. For desktop PCs, however, the motherboard is just another modular component and it can be easily upgraded to add new features. All desktop PC motherboards share a common set of features, most of which will be familiar to anyone who’s ever peeked inside their PC’s case. The motherboard itself is a large printed circuit board with various slots and sockets into which

Although software is often to blame, a poor-quality motherboard can be the cause of poor PC performance and system instability. This can be a particular problem for PCs that run demanding tasks for long periods, such as gaming or video rendering. Reliability is also a concern for anyone who overclocks their PC, since few motherboards are designed to work normally when pushed beyond their limits.

means that it can develop models that perfectly meet the needs of PC users. High-quality electronic components and innovative designs come as standard, but ASUS goes the extra mile to invent technology to make its motherboards even more capable. The Dual Intelligent Processor technology used by ASUS’ new P7P55D-E motherboard is a perfect example. This uses two dedicated digital controllers to handle two specific motherboard

functions — energy consumption and power supply. The Energy Performance Unit (or EPU) monitors the processor activity and reduces the power supplied to it and other components to cut energy consumption. The TurboV Processing Unit (TPU) provides a safe and stable way to overclock the processor when extra performance is required — overclocking parameters can be adjusted from within Windows and applied without rebooting, for a quick and effective performance gain.

The ASUS RT-N56U Wi-Fi router solves both these problems.
