very computer, from the simplest games console to the most powerful mainframe, has a motherboard at its core. Every PC component connects to and communicates through the motherboard, which makes it a bit like the human nervous system — though it’s much easier to upgrade…

The motherboard plays a large part in determining a computer’s performance and affects its specification. For consumer devices like smartphones, netbooks and notebooks, the motherboard is an integral part of the overall device and the other components are usually permanently attached to it.
