Design Emergency Review

Australian Curriculum: Update After lengthy processes by ACARA, the Board of Studies and the DEC, consultation on the Draft Shape of the Australian Curriculum: Technologies paper has finally closed.
On Tuesday 3 July, the Technologies National Panel convened via teleconference to discuss the consultation feedback and recommendations for revision.
Our consultation clearly showed that teachers in NSW were concerned about the future impact of the Australian Curriculum. We had 195 responses to the survey and ran 4 videoconferences to meet demand.
So where to from here? Editing of the Draft Shape Paper will take place and be presented to the ACARA Board late July in readiness for the writing process early August. ACARA is aiming to publish the finalised curriculum by the end of 2013.

AN ONLINE RESOURCE TO SUPPORT THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT Spacewise is a design project for students in Years 7 and 8 to engage with the built environment. Originally developed in collaboration with the NSW Architect’s Registration Board as a professional learning course for teachers, the new Spacewise resource takes students on a journey through the design process, immersing them in the exploration of their local community and immediate environment to create authentic learning experiences about the interaction of people, places and spaces. Spacewise provides opportunities for creativity and problem solving while recognising the value of projectbased learning. Spacewise encourages connection with the built environment and exploration of the relationships that exist when people interact with their environment. Students identify a public space that needs redesigning. They use feedback from their target market to validate their design ideas or to modify solutions to better meet the needs and wants of users. They develop a range of communication devices to convey their ideas in the form of a proposal pitched to a chosen audience – hopefully those with the power to turn their design solutions into reality. Spacewise will be released in the coming months. Direct links to the resource will be featured on the Technology pages of the Curriculum Support website.

Design Emergency Design Emergency is a program soon to be launched by Object: Australian Centre for Design. The program was recently piloted by Vivid Sydney at the MCA .
Five schools including Randwick Public School, Putney Public School, Daceyville Public School, St Mary’s Public School and Pittwater High School participated in the pilot program. Each school partnered with a professional designer and a design student from Billy Blue Design College. Designers Liane Rossler, Mick Alvisse, Ramin Jahromi, Andrew Simpson and Zoe Barber led the teams through the different phases of the Design Emergency. The challenge given to the schools ‘How can we make our local community a better place for kids?’ was extremely broad, allowing the teachers and students explore relevant local issues. Before attending the day, students investigated an issue affecting their local environment and analysed the status of the issue by undertaking empathetic research. Students were encouraged to communicate their findings through text, photos or storyboards, rather than focus on developing final solutions. By analysing their findings with the de-
