TechMix

Science & Innova

Formulated for Your Herd

Feed consumed by animals varies greatly in nature, and so do their digestive tracts and processes. Ruminant animals like cows, digest feed with a rumen microflora fermentation mechanism of digestion. This is very different from how simple-stomached animals, such as dogs, horses, and swine, which use a pH chemical process of digestion. At TechMix, we create formulas that are specifically designed to help rehydrate animals according to the type of feed they consume and their particular digestion process. All of the products featured in this catalog are developed specifically with dairy cows in mind, ensuring that they will receive optimum nutrition designed to match the way in which they consume and digest. In some cases, we offer multiple administration methods for the same product, allowing the producer to choose the one that best fits the practices at that farm.

Palatability

TechMix products are formulated with special flavors that appeal to individual species. For oral rehydration formulas to be effective in reducing dehydration, they must be highly palatable and readily consumed by the animal. Cattle, horses, swine, and dogs all have different tastes and prefer different flavors and textures of feed. By specifically formulating each product with its own flavor and texture, TechMix enhances the animal’s desire to consume the water and nutrients.

Flexibility

Until the BlueLiteŽ product was developed, the only electrolytes available were in salt and pill form. These were very bitter when added to water, and neither animals nor humans would ingest them. It was found that sucrose (different sources of sugar and carbohydrates) in oral hydration products helps contain and maintain the tissue levels of glucose, carbohydrates, and electrolytes. As a result of the added formulation of carbohydrates, the problems of muscle soreness and stiffness were greatly reduced. Knowing that animals feel better with electrolytes, carbohydrates, and glucose, TechMix developed a rehydration product that would be palatable for animals – if an oral rehydration product is to really work, the animals must drink it! As BlueLite was introduced to the market, we discovered that the method of product administration varies by producer. To provide the flexibility that producers need, whenever possible, we provide multiple forms of administration for each product.

Research

The TechMix structure includes ongoing research through various university animal research centers, co-operative efforts with other companies and suppliers, and our own field trials. Members and technical staff from universities help us develop products and refine ingredients. This combination of science and research help to ensure that TechMix products continue to deliver the right nutrients as they are needed.

Bovine BlueLite has consecutively shown positive results for milk production during heat stress and fresh cow programs. An Italian study helps to illustrate mortality rates of heat stressed cows, while a trial recently conducted in Florida illustrates the impact that Bovine BlueLite can have when used during times of heat stress.

The Relationship Between THI and Mortality

Moravits Dairy, Recent Italian study reported in the Journal of Dairy Science, shows that mortality rates for cows experiencing heat stress trend dramatically upward when the THI reaches 79.6°F. This six year study verifies that when the minimum THI was greater than 70°F, an increase of deaths occurred regardless of the maximum THI – and even THI measurements lower than this resulted in reduced production and performance.

“Make Bovine BlueLite available when your cows need it most. It works!” During heat stress, Kris Moravits offers Bovine BlueLite at the peak of the heat by adding the recommended rate of 2 ounces per head per day to the Total Mixed Ration (TMR). After the hot days, Moravits backs the feed rate down to 1 ounce per head per day. “This year [2012] we dropped 12,000 lbs. of milk during the 2 hottest days of the summer and got all but about 2,000 lbs. back with the help of Bovine BlueLite - it makes the cows come back faster.”

BOVINE

Key Components at Work DFMs (Direct Fed Microbials)

Bovine BlueLite 2Bw contains Direct Fed Microbials that provide a source of live, naturally occurring microorganisms that help maintain a healthy intestinal tract and improve performance. During periods of intestinal challenge brought on by stress events, Bovine BlueLite 2Bw helps to stabilize intestinal health.

Electrolytes

For the dairy cow, total body water content is about 65% of their body weight. Enteric infections can quickly dehydrate the body through fluid loss. Without adequate water and electrolytes, the body cannot maintain proper fluid balance and will dehydrate. Bovine BlueLite 2Bw is a multiple electrolyte formula that helps maintain fluid balance, and was specifically designed to provide rapid absorption of electrolytes. When a cow is stressed, the level of bad bacteria is higher than good bacteria. By introducing DFMs combined with electrolytes, a healthy rumen environment is created where the beneficial bacteria count is higher, and the rumen is better able to absorb nutrients.

Beneficial Bacteria

Bovine BlueLite 2Bw contains two forms of the beneficial bacteria, Bacillus: Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis. Bacillus produces a variety of enzymes, which may help to explain increased feed utilization seen in normally healthy animals fed DFMs. These enzymes break down complex feed molecules into simpler nutrients allowing the cow’s body to more efficiently absorb and help maintain a proper nutrient balance in the gut.

Howe Holsteins , Minnesota

“Bovine BlueLite 2Bw - The extra attention that stressed cows need!” Elmer Howe, Howe Holsteins. “Bovine BlueLite 2Bw is a staple product used in our hospital pen. All cows in there are stressed; either transitioning after freshening, post-surgery, some have mastitis issues, among other problems. These cows need extra attention and Bovine BlueLite 2Bw does just that. We’ve been using BlueLite in our herd for years, and the added benefit of probiotics is key to helping these cows overcome the stresses – this is a great addition to the BlueLite line of products!”

CAPSULES

A source of probiotics for dairy cows. Speed digestive restoration and help encourage increased intake by providing a concentrated form of niacin and a quick boost of DFMs (direct-fed microbials). Rumen Yeast Caps help to restore beneficial bacteria in the rumen and encourage dry matter intake any time that normal digestive health has been interrupted. Each capsule of Rumen Yeast Caps provides 30 Billion CFU’s of live yeast and 6 grams of niacin, both of which are required to restore normal digestive health. Administer any time that dry matter intake drops, following freshening, and after antibiotic treatment. Producers find Rumen Yeast Caps to be a fast and effective solution any time cows are off feed and need to quickly restore healthy digestive system balance. Nutritionists and veterinarians recommend niacin supplementation as an essential nutrient for cows suffering from ketosis.

When to Use:

Heat Stress

In periods of heat stress, cows readily lose water and nutrients required for optimal body function and performance. Hydration is a key component to herd health and performance. By providing the right nutrition at the right time, it is possible to aid recovery from dehydration and help prevent production losses.

Heat Stress Issues that Impair Milk Production Dehydration • 66% of body fluid is contained within cells, 34% • • •

in the soft tissue compartments, digestive, and vascular systems Water is required to carry and distribute nutrients and provide fluid for the fetus Water will be utilized for managing heat stress first, then maintenance systems Dehydration reduces fluids and nutrients transferred to the cells

Circulatory and nutrient disruptions • Blood flow is directed to the surface layers of the • •

body to cool, putting the digestive system at risk of becoming hypoxic (low oxygen) Intestinal toxins can enter circulation and cause inflammation and poor health Cells and tissues are deficient in required nutrients and don’t function properly

Reduced feed intake • Digestion increases body heat so cows will eat less in an attempt to manage body temperature

• Heat stress accounts for a 50% drop in feed intake • •

while decreased feed intake accounts for 50% of the drop in milk yield Bout feeding during cooler periods of the day creates risk of acidosis Low intake of magnesium leaves cow at risk of hypocalcaemia

Reproductive compromises • A nutrition deficit contributes to prolonged

postpartum anestrus and impairs follicular maturity

• Inadequate nutrient intake reduces body condition score and finally cessation of estrus cycles

• Cumulative effects of heat stress events can

compromise the success of gestation year round

h. L ess glucose is available to the mammary gland and thus less milk is synthesized

Bovine BlueLiteŽ has the nutrition to help mitigate these physiological challenges. 1. E lectrolyte balance & betaine: Bovine BlueLite encourages water intake and rehydration—making more water available for the fetus, transporting nutrients, dissipating heat, to compensate water and milk production losses, and avoid immune impairment. Betaine helps to maintain cell volume and fluid balance thereby helping improve protein synthesis, cell division, and maintain gut lining.

Glucose is a limiting factor for milk production. Cows under heat stress consume up to 14 oz. more of glucose because they can’t use fat reserves as an energy source (metabolic inflexibility). 3. V itamins: general functioning of the physiological milk production and reproduction system. Antioxidant vitamins help to combat toxins.

2. E nergy: Bovine BlueLite provides more glucose into the blood flow.

Event

Heat Stress

The economics of heat stressed cows

Total economic loss to the American dairy industry due to heat stress is calculated between $897 million to $1.5 billion. Clearly, heat stress is one of the surest ways for a dairyman to lose milk production and thus profits. Combine milk loss with the detrimental effects on a cow’s health and it’s clear that heat stress is a challenge that needs to be addressed to maintain production and profitability.

Heat and Humidity

Temperature alone is not the determinant for heat stress conditions. Humidity plays a role as well. The Temperature Humidity Index (THI) Chart, can be used as a guide for determining when conditions are right for heat stress events.

Managing for heat stress with proven nutrition solutions is critical, just like ventilation and other equipment solutions. When considering the cost of treatment for a retained placenta at $315 or the treatment costs of some metabolic disorders, doing as much as possible to avoid such expenses makes good economic sense.

Maintaining desired DCAD levels in heat stressed cows

Desired DCAD levels are determined on a cow’s milking status. In an effort to support feed intake and milk production it is ideal to achieve a DCAD level of +35 to +45 meq/100 g of total ration dry matter (TRDM) in just-fresh cows or lactating cows. During times of heat stress, cows tend to reduce feed intake and problems with low blood bicarbonate and rumen acidosis can arise; however, positive DCAD levels may reduce these effects and keep cows eating and producing. Bovine BlueLite® does not affect the DCAD of TDRM. It provides proprietary energy, electrolytes, and vitamins for cattle to bridge a dietary energy gap. Bovine BlueLite can and should be used in addition to DCAD to help maintain body fluid balance during times of heat stress.

In a university experiment on a commercial dairy under mild heat stress conditions, Bovine BlueLite® Pellets were added to feed provided to a group of multiparous and primiparous cows and compared to an untreated control group. The effect of Bovine BlueLite Pellets on body temperature shows an average difference of 0.49°F from peak ambient temperature at hour 13, through hour 16. The point of greatest body temperature difference between groups showed the Bovine BlueLite group 0.6°F cooler. Milk production for this trial showed the Bovine BlueLite treated group averaged 5.56% more during the first 20 days (when ambient temperatures were greatest) than the control group.

Fresh Cow

For the fresh cow, the entire transition period is really a series of one stress event followed by another. From decreased dry matter intake, to challenges with rehydration and re-establishment of feed intake post-freshening, the dairyman needs solutions that encourage a healthy recovery and optimal lactation performance. Many fresh cow challenges can be addressed with proper nutrition delivered at just the right time.

Key challenges facing the fresh cow by phase

PHASE ONE Pre-freshening

Lower Dry Matter Intake

Regardless of the incident, a depressed appetite leads to lower production, increased weight loss, and poor reproduction. Dairy scientists estimate that any incident that decreases milk production by 1 pound at the peak of lactation will decrease milk production by 500-1000 pounds throughout lactation.

PHASE TWO

During Freshening

Hypocalcaemia (low blood calcium)

Producing milk requires significant amounts of calcium which the cow needs to accommodate. Colostrum production alone demands 20-30 grams of calcium in the first day and healthy cows typically have 10-12 grams calcium in their blood. Cows that do not have adequate amounts of calcium can readily be challenged with hypocalcaemia.

Magnesium deficiency

Magnesium is critical in the cow’s ability to metabolize calcium and therefore, critical to helping prevent hypocalcaemia. If there is a drop in dry matter intake, a deficiency can occur due to magnesium levels being dependent on diet alone.

Potassium deficiency

Once cows freshen, the demands of recovery from calving and lactation quickly exhaust their supplies of potassium which can lead to metabolic disorders like ketosis. The absence of adequate amounts of potassium affects smooth muscle contraction which can lead to issues related to retained placentas.

Displaced abomasum (DA)

Post-freshening, there is more room for the abomasum to “move around” due to the available space without the calf. Encouraging immediate water intake helps to “anchor” the rumen in place and reduces this chance of displacement.

Economic impact of fresh cow challenges

PHASE THREE

Milk production is the life blood of the dairy business. For the dairyman, the main focus is on the transition, because any miscalculation can cost thousands in either health related issues or long-term production losses. In fact, 70-80% of veterinary costs are incurred 1-3 weeks post-freshening. However, many of these costs are potentially preventable. With proper understanding of the relationship between fresh cow physiology and proper nutrition, a dairyman can save big on treatment interventions, culling or lost production.

Post-Freshening

Negative energy balance When energy intake is less than energy used for milk production and typical cow maintenance, a cow can fall into a negative energy state. Body fat is mobilized in an effort to balance energy levels but in excess this can lead to fatty liver syndrome, body condition loss, ketosis and other metabolic problems.

Dehydration Cows are immediately dehydrated post-freshening due to: • Feed and water intake decline post-freshening • Fluid and tissue loss during freshening can equal the weight of the calf • The demand to produce milk

Digestive Health

When cows are off feed, helping them return to normal intake levels and profitability quickly is the top priority. Speed digestive restoration and help encourage increased intake by providing a quick boost of DFMs (direct-fed microbials) along with live yeast and a concentrated form of niacin.

Direct-Fed Microbials (DFMs)

A direct-fed microbial is a source of live (viable) naturally occurring microorganisms. All animals have a diverse collection of about 100 trillion microorganisms in their digestive tract. These microorganisms have a significant impact on animal metabolism, physiology and nutrition. Research shows that an animal’s intestinal microflora consists of a balance of potentially pathogenic bacteria and beneficial bacteria. If this balance is disrupted, the number of pathogenic increase while the number of beneficial decrease, the animal’s health, growth and performance can be effected. Antibiotic treatment, ration change, weaning and other stress can upset this balance. Feeding a DFM helps to maintain this balance, allowing optimal health and performance.

DFM Modes of Action • Production of Organic Acids: Inhibits E. coli and other • • • •

pathogens, serves as an energy source. Production of Antimicrobials Inhibits intestinal pathogens Deconjugation of Bile Salts Stimulation of Immune Response: May stimulate antibody production and phagocytic activity against pathogens allowing animals to be more resistant to bacterial infections Enzyme Activity: Enzymes produced by DFM bacteria help break down complex feed molecules into simpler nutrients which are more readily absorbed by the animal. Reduction of Toxic Amines Competitive Exclusion: Beneficial bacteria has been shown to outcompete other bacteria for nutrients in the gut

WHEN TO USE DFMs: • • • •

At birth During weaning or diet change During periods of stress After antibiotic therapy

Live Cell Yeast

Yeasts belong to the plant group fungi and fall under a broader definition of DFMs. Most yeasts contain the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Of the six different dried yeast products defined by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) only two contain live yeast cells capable of fermentation – active dry yeast and yeast culture. Active Dry Yeast is yeast that has been separated from its microbiological culture and has significant fermentation activity along with a high number of live yeast cells. Yeast Culture is yeast and the microbiological culture in which it was grown that has some fermentation capabilities. Yeast culture contains a lower number of viable cells and usually has a high inclusion rate in rations. In order for the yeast to survive in rumen fluid and continue to secrete their beneficial substances, it is essential that the cells are viable and fermentative as such in active dry yeast.

Yeast Modes of Action

Total response depends on: • Type of diet – response is greater when ratio of concentrate to ration is higher • Stage of lactation – greater response is seen during the late-dry or early lactation phase • Anaerobic conditions – yeast scavenges oxygen allowing anaerobic microorganisms, including fiber-digesting and lactate-utilizing bacteria, to grow

Yeast, what’s the difference? Active Dry Yeast • Scavenges Oxygen • Enzyme Producer • Produces B-vitamins • Produces microbial protein and metabolites

• Stimulates feed intake

WHEN TO USE LIVE CELL YEAST: • • • • •

During the dry period During early lactation In high producing cows In high concentrate diets In highly fermentable diets

Yeast Culture • Fermentation metabolites • Feeds rumen microflora • Variable viability

The effect of live yeast or yeast culture on microbial biomass

This graph shows that both a live yeast and a yeast culture could be used to simulate microbial biomass production. Microbial biomass is a major source of protein and amino acids for the ruminant animal with over 40 percent of its requirement coming in this form.

RYC Yeast

The effect of live yeast or yeast culture on redox potential

The data represented in this graph shows that a live yeast is an effective oxygen scavenging yeast. The anaerobic environment is effected by the oxygen scavenging yeast which increases fiber digestion and lactate utilization.

RYC Yeast

The effect of yeast source on total VFA production (0-6 hours) VFA production of live yeast and yeast cultures

Volatile fatty acids (VFA) produced by rumen bacteria are the main energy source of the dairy cow, and are important in influencing the nutrient composition of the milk. The data shows that a live yeast improved the VFA production. The ability to manipulate the VFA profile is essential in allowing individual producers to impact the overall herd production. RYC Yeast
