A conscious and moderate consumption
Irish regulation for “health warnings” in wine labels, Consorzio Vini del Trentino reiterates its opposition
In the aftermath of Ireland’s decision, allowed by the EU, to move forward with draft legislation on so-called “health warnings” - i.e., health warnings that can be placed on wine labels indicating the dangerous nature of the product, similarly to what happens with cigarettes - there have been many reactions against the measure at a national level. In addition to stigmatizing the obvious violation of the principle of equal application to all EU members of the rules of the European single market, guaranteed by the CMO, several parties have pointed out how a product that is historically recognized as an integral part of the Mediterranean diet and a thousand-year tradition is being treated the same way as tobacco, without, moreover, making any distinction between quantities and methods of consumption. Such an ideological approach, aprioristically against consumption, without distinguishing between conscious consumption and abuse, is likely to create a dangerous precedent for one of the products of excellence of Made in Italy, generating a turnover of around 14 billion euros, half of which comes from exports. mediterranea. L’educazione al bere consapevole ed un approccio corretto al consumo sono la strada da percorrere, non certo misure proibizioniste” continua il Presidente.

“It is clear that this distortion of European legislation, which calls into question the principles of the European single market and indiscriminately puts wine on the bench, creates serious problems for the sector,” says Consorzio Vini del Trentino President, Sen. Pietro Patton. “To claim that wine is bad for you in a general way is wrong and misleading, when at the same time nutritionists are in agreement in recommending a conscious and moderate consumption of this beverage as an integral component of a healthy Mediterranean diet. Education on conscious drinking and a correct approach to consumption are the path to take, certainly not prohibitionist measures,” the president continued.
Therefore, Consorzio Vini del Trentino firmly stands against the choice of Ireland and invites all the different stakeholders in the wine world to unite to launch an appeal at all levels, so as to avoid the application of a measure that could irreparably damage Italian and European wine production.
