CURRICULUM VITAE.

ABOUT ME. My passion for design started at a young age. I was forever doodling. Being brought up on a farm I was always curious about how things worked and was forever fixing (breaking) things using whatever materials I could find. As I’ve grown up my interest in design has grown with me as I continue to learn and refine my craft. Besides from design my other interests are sports, music, food and travelling.

CURIOSITY. LEXUS DESIGN AWARDS ‘14

THE CONCEPT. This ‘hamster ball’ camera design was my entry for the “curiosity” brief as part of the 2014 Lexus Design Awards. It enables people to explore their own curiosity by leaving the device to “roam” across landscapes, recording HD footage from a very low perspective. This will allow the user to see the world from views that are rarely viewed by people. It is an ideal tool for filmographers who can use this device to create engaging, captivating footage.

A micro-USB port enables footage to be uploaded from the device with ease. The infrared sensor ensures that the device will change direction when its path is blocked, while the gyroscope balances the camera to create clean, crisp footage.

NORTHUMBRIAN WATER. ‘REFRAIN FROM THE DRAIN’ CAMPAIGN ‘14

THE CAMPAIGN. ‘Refrain from the drain’ is a campaign designed to educate and encourage the public to dispose of fat correctly in a ‘fat box’ rather than putting it down the drain. This campaign is designed to reduce the amount of waste fat and oil that is currently put into the water system; which leads to blockages, flooding and increased water bills.

THE FAT BOX. The ‘Fat box’ is a small crash lock, recycled cardboard box that is lined with foil. It allows users to pour their excess fat from cooking straight into a sealable container that can then be disposed of in the bin. The ‘Fat box’ has a 500ml max capacity. This is large enough to hold the fat from: 5kg Turkey

3.2kg Beef

2.5kg Lamb

3.2kg Pork

4.5kg Chicken

CITY BUS STOP. BUS STOP ‘14

THE CONCEPT. A bus stop inspired by the dissecting skylines of cityscapes. By using intersecting glass and steel components this structure has an open and spacious feel while providing adequate shelter for the public at the same time. The heavy use of glass reduces the confinement that is often felt with bus shelter designs and allows users to interact more with the city and surrounding scenery.

10

This bus shelter is constructed from recycled glass and steel, making it an environmentally friendly choice for city councils. The contemporary design makes it an ideal choice for any urban environment.

MEDICAL BED. LIVING IN COMFORT ‘14

A COMFORTING APPROACH TO MEDICAL DESIGN. To any hospital patient, medical beds can be intimidating and uncomfortable. Metal side rails and fully visible mechanical components are not only ugly but can leave patients feeling imprisoned in their own beds. This medical bed takes a new approach. By replacing side rails with padded side walls and concealing the mechanical components within the base of a bed, the patient can have a more relaxed and comforting stay in hospital.

12

MATERIALS.

FEATURES.

The side wall panels and base of this medical bed are manufactured from Dupont Corian. This material is hygienic, non-porous and stain resistant making it ideally suited for a medical environment. The smooth seamless finish of Corian also allows for a clean, gentle aesthetic while maintaining a medical feel to the design.

This medical bed has all the features of a standard medical bed. The sidewalls can be fully lowered for easy patient access. They can also be locked at 900 for extra space for books/ magazines or for a small child to sit on. The bed can also be raised into a seated position with the sidewalls acting as arm rests.

VAXXINE. RSA STUDENT DESIGN AWARDS ‘16

THE LAST MILE. Distributing vaccinations is a global logistical issue. It is often the last stage of the distribution network that is most dangerous. Vaccination boxes are used to transport the vaccines the last step of the journey however vials are often broken because of difficult terrain and hazardous transportation methods. This can lead to rural communities not receiving the vaccinations that they desperately need.

RETROFITTED DESIGN. The Vaxxine is a retrofitted frame that fits on to vaccination boxes. It enables the cool boxes to be stacked securely and transported by porters and medical professionals to their destination with ease, reducing the risk of broken or damaged vials. The Vaxxine is a cost-effective solution that is designed to fit onto the millions of vaccination boxes that are currently in operation. It features a flat pack design which reduces the distribution costs of the device.

14

FEATURES. The Vaxxine features a flat pack design which makes distributing it cost-effective and efficient. It has a pull lock handle which allows the device to be fitted onto a cool box with ease. The Vaxxine has multiple strap slots which enable a user to carry cool boxes or secure the boxes to a vehicle easily. The Vaxxine’s design also allows it to interlock with other devices which means multiple boxes can be stacked together safely and securely.

15

16

VERSATILITY. The Vaxxine is highly compatible because of key features such as horizontal/vertical stacking and multiple straps slots. This enables the Vaxxine to be used at all stages of transit. It also allows the Vaxxine to transgress easily over different cultures, climates, landscapes and environments.

SAFEGUARD. FINAL MAJOR PROJECT ‘16

SAFEGUARD. Safeguard is a head injury management system consisting of an app and smart mouthguard. It enables users to identify and respond in real time to head impacts suffered by rugby players. It is an active aid in reducing the risk of traumatic brain injuries such as repeat concussion and secondary impact syndrome as well as helping to prevent the onset of neurodegenerative diseases such as CTE.

The Safeguard mouthpiece features integrated technology which detects when a player is at possible risk of a concussion. The system takes advantage of an accelerometer and timer to calculate the force and duration of an impact. The impact is then converted into a Head Injury Criterion which can assess the probability of a severe head injury. This data is then transmitted via bluetooth to the app which can alert the coach to a player suffering a potential head injury. When a player is at risk of a head injury an LED panel on the front of the mouthpiece will be illuminated which will alert the referee to the incident.

19

SAFEGUARD. FINAL MAJOR PROJECT ‘16

THE SAFEGUARD APP. The app allows multiple players to be protected at any one time. Features include player profiles, incident history, team overview and NHS guidelines. These features help the user of the app to keep a detailed account of player injuries and be well informed about how to respond to a high risk incident.
