Teen Advocacy
Written by: Coral Pongsuwan
As we grow up, we can empathize with various worldwide issues, but may not know to help be a part of the change. In this generation, teens' social media benefits are quick, convenient, and easy to express your opinions when used correctly. There are numerous ways to advocate for your personal beliefs. It has never been easier before to make a change and be involved.

This month's issue is all about advocacy, and how we can make our world a better place for everyone. With that in mind, we must also be aware about our planet's wellbeing, since it is the only one we have. So, how can we be responsible caretakers of the Earth? There are so many ways but, by making small changes in our day-to-day life, we can make a huge difference. Here are four ways to become an Eco-Friendly Boss Babe! #1: Shopping LocalMost food items in the United States have to travel over 1,500 miles before it gets to the consumer's home. As you can tell, this creates large quantities of carbon dioxide emissions. When shopping local, your food does not have to be transported, helping decrease air pollution. Another cool plus to shopping local is you are able to support small businesses!

Ways to Be an Eco-Friendly Boss Babe Written by Sofia Caicedo
#2: Using reusable tote bags- Plastic bags are one of the most harmful things to the environment. They pollute the water and the land, they are not degradable, and the list keeps going. By using reusable bags, we could reduce heaps of waste. According to Holden Bags, if one person uses reusable bags for their whole lives, more than 22,000 plastic bags would be removed from the environment. As you can see, we could make a huge change. Additionally, reusable bags look super cute! #3: Using eco-friendly modes of transportation- Transportation contributes a huge amount to the earth's damaging because of the quantity of gases emitted from vehicles. To reduce this effect on the earth, we can take environmentally friendly modes of transportation such as biking, walking and carpooling. When biking and walking, you are also able to get a good exercise while limiting emissions of greenhouse gases! #4: Repurposing old clothes- North Americans send over 10 million tonnes of clothing to landfills each year. Out of all that clothing, 95% could have been reused or recycled. There are so many creative ways to repurpose clothing, from cutting an old tshirt into a crop top to planting flowers in old rain boots. Repurposing clothing is a great way to help the environment and can create unique items! Š TBB2020

When beginning the creative journey, generally, our ideas are set towards a goal. We strive to get ourselves known, increase our engagement with our followers, and become the next boss girl sensation! But, being a girl boss comes with great responsibility. It is most definitely a superpower. Besides being ambitious and outspoken, a real boss babe has the power of effective communication. Meaning that you do not only create and have passion, but you have the ability to take your ideas further and convert them into purpose. So what do you do when you don't have a clear purpose quite yet? The first thing you should consider when bringing your purpose to life is targeting that purpose. As readers, viewers, and listeners, we can quickly tell when a brand doesn’t know where it’s going, and in effect, we drift away from the experience it wants to provide. As businesswomen, we must consider whom we plan to impact our words and actions and what we expect our customers to do. This is called a target audience; it can be an age group, community, or people with specific interests. It can be hard writing down everything you wish to project with your brand, but it is crucial that you ask yourself: why do you produce content, where do you see your business long-term, and what exactly can you do to help your issue of concern.
TBB MAGAZINE
09
Creating With A Purpose Written By Nicole Berjaran For instance, let’s say that as a Latina business owner, your content concerns not only your culture but issues that your country is facing; therefore, you will strive to fight those issues by encouraging your customers to reach out and help. It is important to recall that the issue may not connect to you personally but that you’re open to asking your followers! Ask them what concerns them the most and what they would personally do to help. After narrowing down your purpose, it is crucial that you define your “call to action,” which is the desired outcome of your strategy. Whether it is an increased number of donations, shares, or simply talking about the issue, you determine what you expect from your followers.
The next step into creating purposeful content is combining your audience, desired purpose, and content category. This can be easily achieved by simply putting yourself in the other person’s shoes. What makes you read through a post that’s worth a two-hour history lesson narrowed down in five to ten minutes? What or who keeps you updated on the issue? Many new creators have merged their brand, essence, and purpose, while others have taken on new projects entirely focused on the sole purpose of educating people. Whether you’re one or the other, you know precisely whom you want to reach and what content to create to do so.
© TBB2020
Tee Noir, the Youtuber, is an excellent example of this! Through providing her personal opinion, Tee Noir creates content to educate young viewers on various issues concerning the black community's main women. By addressing different topics in movies, social media, and celebrity lifestyle on no longer than 20-minute videos, Tee Noir shows a clear objective on where she’s headed with her channel and what action she expects to create with her content. It is essential to consider that it is adapted to impact the targeted audience and a different one with any content you have previously made.

Now that you have decided your brand's path will take, it is time to get down to business! Do your well-thought research on your issue of interest and pinpoint where you wish to project it. Whether through podcasts episodes, Instagram stories, videos, or twitter threads, you should determine the best way to engage with your audience. The best thing is that you’re not only able to achieve this through social media, but you can use your products as well. Contact your local social services institutions, and don't be afraid to collaborate with them!
You can come up with many things if your business is directly involved; for instance, if you were to be a glosses small business owner, you can develop a special edition lip gloss whose half earnings would go down to your cause of interest. This is an excellent way of merging originality and purpose altogether. Finally, it is essential to recall that you’re bringing new information to people, and you need to be open to present it and receive further details yourself. As boss women, we must remember to be polite and respect everyone’s opinion; after all, nobody’s perfect, and we are all learning from each other . Creating a purpose is vital to success. It may not be easy initially, but remember, “Queens will always turn pain into power.” Remember, as the future leaders of industries and the world of tomorrow, it is your voice speaking for those who have been silenced. So, take that step you’ve been thinking of and take it with pride. Be the role model you have always wanted.

Over the past few years, we have seen big corporations, YouTubers, and influencers exposed for not being true to their audience or not staying true to what they live by. No one is forcing anyone to tell why they didn't live up to their values or promise, but it does create a dent into the relationship you have worked hard on with your customers or audience. That's why knowing your values and incorporating them into your brand/business can create a much more significant relationship between your audience/customers and you. "It's not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are." Roy Disney quotes, When you are set on your values, you will face obstacles that will make things easier because you know who you are. Building Your Platform On Your Values. Written By Akunna O. Ask yourself questions relating to what your values are. For example, if you have an eco-friendly business, asking yourself why you want to be ecofriendly is very useful when asking why you created an ecofriendly company. Have a defined response, connect with your brand values. They must be valuable to you. Beginning the process down with yourself and ask yourself what things you live by; you may not have discovered your values a that is okay. Determine what is important to you, who do you want to be. Believe that you will find them at your own pace.
If you have your top 2 or 3 values in mind, now is the time to find ways to implement them into your brand, blog, or business. So, suppose that means adding something to your blog, the intro or outro of your youtube video, or even adding something on the card you send to your customers. In that case, it is vital that it all blends, and your audience/customers will know you are genuine when it comes to you want you to believe in and, most importantly, your values. Lastly, stay true to yourself, because sometimes things might get shaky and you will feel confused or sometimes lost but always remind yourself that when you remain true to yourself, it can bring both disadvantages and advantages. What are some things you do, when it comes to fashion, that are sustainable? “Slow Fashion to me is either sharing my clothes with others or just buying second hand. I swap clothes with my friends and family all the time! It’s great, because I don’t really have a set style! I can be girly one day and then totally switch things up and wear an oversized t-shirt and sweatpants. I never boxed myself into a certain style. It’s also all about Thrift Stores! You can find the coolest clothes at thrift stores, from places all over the world! I only shop secondhand now, unless it’s intimates. In that case, I look into brands that have items made from recycled material.” What are some of your favorite sustainable brands or clothing stores? “Although I shop mostly second-hand, I mainly buy from Small Businesses. My blog has allowed me to collaborate with such amazing brands, but I like to pay full-price, or half price, for the items they send. I don’t want to take away from their opportunities, because they are trying to build themselves up. A lot of people, when they start their sustainability blog, they do it for the wrong reasons. I find companies that I continue to buy from to this day. A sustainable brand I love is “Alternative”. I have a sports bra from them and yoga pants that are totally made up of recycled materials. The company is amazing and pays their workers a living wage, and has great working conditions. Another one is “Girlfriend”, good athletic clothes. I was being more wasteful that way, rather than slowly going into this journey. When I first started, I used to have a bunch of plastic in my kitchen. It’s taken me three years, but now I have two plastic cups- one for painting and the other one is just a random cup. It’s a slow journey! Also, go through what you have now. Especially when it comes to clothes! I sit down in my closet and think “If I haven’t worn this, the least I could do is resell it or see if a friend wants it. It frees up space for me to get something else! Try to shop out of seasons. People will clean out their closets at the most random times during the year. You might find some great Christmas decorations in July- vintage, hand-painted, hand-made, etc. If you see a piece of clothing you like, hold it and picture yourself wearing it. Meet Boss Babe Lauren Henry Interview By Muskan Manzoor
This month, I had the chance to chat with a true boss babe Lauren Henry, a youth activist and former Nordstrom Fashion Ambassador, from Houston, TX. Lauren finished her associates degree early while still in high school and went on to pursue a bachelor's degree in Political Science right after graduation. She is currently a senior in college in Austin, Texas. Lauren is extremely passionate about activism and shared that, “My goal is to incorporate pop culture and politics in a way that helps a common person understand what is going on in politics. It is hard to know the decisions that are being made for you when you don’t even know what they are talking about.” When asked about her college experience thus far Lauren stated that it has been “different considering I am at a predominantly white institution that is private and catholic. None of those identify with my identity so it has been a constant battle. However, it has been extremely eye opening.”

While she has always held an interest in politics, a major push towards pursuing activism and speaking out on issues started with a very tragic incident in 2018. Lauren explained how the shooting at MSD High school in Parkland caused her to join the “uproar of kids taking action and marching against the gun violence.” Lauren further explained how things have changed, “Since then I have definitely become more radicalized. I have discontinued my work with March personally but I am continuing to go through more radical routes of activism because it takes a lot. It is not going to be an easy fight to get justice and equality and create a safer world for our future.” Upon asking Lauren about advocacy and what that means for her she stated.
“Advocacy means checking off all boxes as in making sure we are inclusive enough to hold each of our identities to a high regard in the capacity that we are being mindful of the things we say. You can’t be for one thing and not for another when it comes to justice. Be one for all.”
An advice Lauren shared for other teen boss babes on getting involved in the political scene even if they can’t vote: “Get real. We have this superficial dynamic of trying to make everything pretty and aesthetic and just trying to appeal to the masses. We really have to sit down and get real.” Lauren believes that teens can make a difference even if they aren’t eligible or unable to vote by “showing up to meetings and getting educated, passing on the knowledge to family members, paying attention to what is going on, and speaking up.” Where can our TBB Magazine readers find you? A Historic Fashion Month Written By: Jill LaPine Fashion Month looked a bit different than the years prior with designers finding unique ways to showcase their Spring and Summer collections for 2021. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic hitting the fashion world hard, these designers brought hope and joy through their work. The new and meaningful trends were impeccable to say the least. In terms of shows, the crowds were limited, and virtual shows became much more popular due to the fact that many were not able to travel due to International border restrictions. For those who did attend in person, designers were intentional with separated seating to enhance social distancing. Even the models were positioned in new ways so they would not walk past each other, a good example of this was the staggered positionings of the Chanel show. To reach a broader audience this year, TikTok hosted its own digital online Fashion Month, which had access to certain shows and even some style capsules from brands that worked with TikTok specifically. The New York Fashion Week was also shortened to four days this year, instead of the usual six. The designers were not stopped, however, when it came to outstanding designs, tailoring, and inspiration. Some could argue that this year brought them more inspiration than ever before, as the pandemic gave opportunity for greater creative thinking.

Like most Fashion Weeks, there were some consistent themes throughout in terms of styles and upcoming trends. Bright colors were all over the runway and patterns were extremely prevalent as seen in the Valentino show and the Tom Ford look book. Pleated pants seemed to make a comeback in shows like Channel, as well as two-toned pants. Some designers took inspiration from the time of quarantine to bring their shows to life, such as Fendi using elements from being at home (being with family and lying in bed) to reflect the past six months.

One of the most prominent designers who had the most influential show in terms of bringing diversity to Fashion Week is the one and only Rihanna. The Savage X Fenty Show, Vol. 2 was so incredibly powerful, it truly proved that any and every body is beyond beautiful. The singer’s lingerie line featured striking black designs with fabric designed to move with you and make your form look as stunning as possible. Another show to highlight is Fendi. This brand had an immense variety of models. Every body type was represented in this show, and so elegantly at that. The models ranged in skin color, size, height, and even age. There was no “standard” for Fendi, which helps to push the point that high fashion is for everyone! The fashion world has slowly been making improvements as they have given representation to more models of color, shape, size, and gender, and this season was no different. The shows this season were more diverse than ever before, proving that the fashion world has heard the cries for change, and has responded in a positive way.
The models ranged in skin color, size, height, and even age. There was no “standard” for Fendi, which helps to push the point that high fashion is for everyone! The show was so fun to watch because of how well people from all walks of life were represented. Other brands that participated in this type of show were Christian Siriano, Etro, and Versace to name a few. To further promote diversity, Harlem’s Fashion Row also started during New York Fashion Week, a creative company with the mission to promote designers of color. This platform made waves this Fashion Month as many black designers had a better opportunity to promote and show off their work. With more platforms and designers like this gaining popularity, the tragic stigma that the fashion world is exclusive will slowly but surely start to fade away . It was unsure of whether the SS21 Fashion month would happen with everything going on in the world today, but thankfully with proper regulation, planning and creativity, the shows were impressively done and Fashion Month was made possible. With more diversity upon the runways, this season truly stood out and can be inspirational to all the fashion lovers around the world.

sustainable & ethical fashion brands
Sustainability is becoming more and more critical in the world of fashion. For reasons like ethical issues, human rights, and protecting the earth, both designers and buyers prioritize sustainability more than ever before. The fashion industry is currently the world's second-largest polluter. Fast fashion brands like Forever 21 and Fashion Nova utilize cheap fabrics, cheap labor, and therefore have abnormally low prices. Unfortunately, this has become the standard for companies, and a reasonably priced sustainable fashion is easily overlooked. Naturally, sustainable brands will have a higher price tag simply because of the production process and the materials used. Often, the clothing is hand produced by the designer or produced in a more expensive, ethical factory. Meaning, employees are paid a liveable wage. This bumps up the price, and the higher quality and often recycled fabrics are used in the production process. Being a sustainable brand isn't as hard as it seems; it's just a decision a company needs to become committed to, and it can feel hard to shop sustainable, but if you do a little digging, you'll find what you need. Finding a brand with prices that don't break the bank and meets the mark on ethical production and ecological matters can be found in a simple google search. Listed here are a few possible brands you can shop from to make your closet more sustainable.
The Levi's Well Thread Collection This collection by the classic denim brand that everyone knows and loves makes every material designed to be recycled. The jeans and t-shirts look just like the original classic Levi's collection and are great basics to have in your wardrobe. On top of that, the price is only $50-$100, about the same as a regular pair of Levi's.
The Girlfriend Collective This brand is a small business that makes super cute and comfortable athletic wear. They use packaging that is 100% recyclable. They also use post-consumer bottles in some of their fabrics to recycle waste. Prices range from $40-$80, which is even cheaper than most popular athletic brands and is improving the environment at the same time. Alternative Apparel This is a brand focusing on sustainable comfort wear. They have basic t-shirts, sweats and hoodies, loungewear made from recycled cotton and hemp blend jersey. It's the comfortable, sustainable loungewear you've been looking for. Their prices are also affordable, only $10-$40

Instagram Reselling, Depop, Poshmark, and Mercari. This can also be called the online thrift store. Someone does all the work for you, curates high-quality items from local thrift shops, and they sell the clothing right from their Instagram page or through a reselling app. Accounts like @sagespecialties and @shopgratefulthreadst resell thrift clothing and clothes from their closets; these resellers take the time to find high-quality items, not perfect as close to perfect as used clothing can be. Shopping other people's closets or thrift stores is one of the best ways to reduce fashion waste, and these accounts make it so much easier. Prices range from $10 $50+ depending on the seller and the product. Everlane This brand sells everything from cotton t-shirts to cashmere sweaters. They use recycled materials and source all their wool from ethically raised farms. Prices range from $18-$150, depending on the material used. Investing in ethically made, sustainable, and sometimes used clothing makes such a difference in eliminating waste. Expanding the lifetime of a garment means it won't be discarded. Sustainable fashion is attainable. All you need to do is look.

Ethical Beauty Brands to Know Written by Jillian Lenae

To look good and feel good are always at the forefront of our minds when someone says beauty, skincare, or cosmetics, our minds should also add to do good to that list. We want to do good for our furry friends and the environment when we consider our beauty purchases. Think about what brands boast cruelty-free ethical products that are beautiful, practical, and affordable for a boss babe to use. You may be scratching your head asking, what does "cruelty-free" mean? Cruelty-free is a label that beauty brands use to state that they do not test their finished products, formulas, or any chemicals on animals. And they also do not sell their products in countries where animal testing is required by law. Investing in ethical beauty brands is another way to be an advocate for what you believe in. While a large portion of beauty brands tout their cruelty-free and ethical label, here are four that stand out!
JOSIE MARAN Josie Maran, a skincare powerhouse, touts their renowned skincare products for being both all-natural and cruelty-free. While this brand is not entirely vegan, they do have a good selection of vegan products to choose from. Personally, my go-to product from their line is the Argan Daily Moisturizer Mineral SPF 47; this SPF-infused moisturizer is a staple in my morning routine. This product leaves otherwise dry and flaky skin feeling plump and moisturized without that oily residue feeling. While Josie Maran products range from $30 - $80, it is possible to find these products at a discounted rate at stores like T.J. Maxx and Nordstrom Rack. KAT VON D While this brand has been at the forefront of controversy in the past, following a rebranding and implementing new leadership, this vegan and the cruelty-free brand continues to deliver high-quality products. At the same time, they are staying true to keeping all products cruelty-free and vegan. The most popular items from Kat Von D are eyeliners that truly stay flawless all day, and high quality pigmented contour palettes. Kat Von D also delivers full coverage concealer and foundation. Also, the Alchemist Palette [Pictured] is a fun twist adding a holographic highlighter array to your collection. Prices range from $25 $70, but the products are an excellent investment as they will last a long time.
LIVING PROOF Now it's about time we covered hair care; my go-to for styling products for a little over a year has been the brand Living Proof. This cruelty-free haircare brand is also making moves to promote sustainability. According to their website, they have partnered with TerraCycle to provide a service to recycle all living proof packaging free of charge. Their overall goal is by 2025 to have 100% recyclable packaging worldwide. Now the products, I have somewhat damaged hair, from the middle school choppy bleached highlights to the senior year perm that took five hours to achieve, my hair has (unfortunately) seen it all. That's why investing in a brand such as living proof is essential to my routine. Instead of using heat on my hair when I want natural waves, I reach for three products. T.B.D. Multitasking Styler for the initial scrunch gives my hair some initial volume (it also smells lovely). Next is my Style Lab Texture Mist; I add this in when my hair is still damp. After it finishes drying, I add a light layer of my Control Hairspray. These products are overall a great long-term investment and never disappoint. Prices range from $25 - $70

MARC JACOBS BEAUTY A well rounded cosmetic, fragrance, and skincare beauty brand? That would be Marc Jacobs Beauty, this brand, while it can be at the higher end of your price point, is always worth the splurge. This brand proudly touts its cruelty-free label and is not sold in a country where animal testing is required. From fragrances like Daisy Dream, Dot, and Decadance, amazing moisturizers, and a makeup line that in and of itself is a force to be reckoned with. This beauty line features high pigmented eyeshadows, illuminating primers, full-coverage foundations, and lipsticks to die for.
Apart from these four brands, there are numerous other options for cruelty-free beauty brands. Purchasing from and supporting brands with sustainable goals, advocating for particular groups, and donating portions of their earnings are excellent ways to advocate through your purchases. By purchasing from ethical brands, you are supporting production practices that coincide with your values. This allows you to look good, feel good , and do good.
