DIFFERENT LEARNING STYLES

IN AN ONLINE ENVIRONMENT BY KANIKA THAKRAN

ust like in the classroom, a student's experience in an online learning environment can vary drastically depending on their preferred learning style. But whether a student is online for the full school year, taking a few extra classes over Zoom, or receiving online tutoring, all online learning environments should be developed with the understanding that, even if everyone is in front of their computer, different learning styles still exist in the online learning space. Put simply: different students will respond to different modes of teaching, and understanding this is the only way to enable satisfying learning outcomes for all those involved.

4 | ONLINE LEARNING SUMMER 2022

It's no secret that students learn differently from one another. Some kids read a lot, while others may fall off to sleep as soon as they open a novel. And in the world of books, the only option used to be to read it or not to read it. Now however, books or similar narratives are available in the form of audio recordings, movies, games and more. In the same way, the world of online learning, vastly expanded these last two years by the effects of the pandemic, offers dozens of new ways for students to learn. The way of learning that existed before the pandemic is turning more and more obsolete every day, and there is no going back to a 100% in-person learning environment from here.

But while a balance between offline and online learning is often discussed in this new normal, what also needs attention is the balance between various learning styles in online education models. While almost all online learning can still be broken down into four primary categories (visual, auditory, reading and kinesthetic), the opportunities that online learning and online tutoring environments offer are new, exciting and wide-reaching. Whether you're online or not, everyone deserves to learn in a style that suits them best and helps them absorb better, and understanding the type of learner you are will help students in school and beyond.

HOW HAS ONLINE EDUCATION CHANGED LEARNING STYLES? The VARK framework of learning styles was first identified by professor Neil Fleming in 1987, and, since then, educators all around the world have been helping students find out which of the styles (visual, auditory, reading or kinesthetic) works best for them. Of course, no student should learn through just one method, but identifying which learning styles work for you and which ones don't can be critical in achieving the education outcomes you're looking for. Let's look at how each of the four different learning styles is reshaped in the online learning space:

VISUAL If you learn most comfortably by watching, your learning style is visual. When learning goes online, a visual learner can benefit from a significant increase in the use of visual features. Tools like digital whiteboards and recorded lectures are some of the best aspects of online education for these learners.

AUDITORY Some people learn best through listening. We all know of friends who may get bored at the sight of a video but will remain glued to content delivered with good audio quality or provided as a podcast. In an online learning environment, auditory students are likely to enjoy oneon-one discussions where they ask their questions and have them addressed directly. Auditory learners will also likely benefit from recorded lectures, as they can focus on a teacher or professor's words without having to keep their eyes on the speaker.

READING For better or worse, this is the primary mode of learning in much of the education world. Traditional pedagogy was based on learning by reading and writing, and many schools today still focus the bulk of their curriculum on reading comprehension and writing assignments. And though many students tend not to be good readers and must supplement their learning elsewhere, a large section still do love reading and learn through this method best. In an online learning environment, a student who prefers reading will not experience much of a shift. Handouts and reading materials are still the best options for these students, though in an online learning environment they can be delivered quickly and efficiently though the internet.

KINESTHETIC The final learning method is learning by doing, in what is called kinesthetic learning. In the offline world, before the pandemic, it was often thought that we needed to go to a school or extracurricular location to learn by doing. But to the delight of students whose learning style is kinesthetic, many online environments offer a wide range of kinesthetic learning options that can guide one on how to ensure excellent learning outcomes through several tactile methods. These include artistic projects and solving real-life problems by scenario and role-play-based learning.

IN CONCLUSION . . . Understanding how your student learns can be critical in making sure they receive the education they need. To achieve the preferred learning outcomes, identifying whether you're a visual, auditory, reading or kinesthetic learner can be vital. And while many schools and educators have understood this for decades, the online learning environments brought about by the pandemic offer a number of new and exciting learning opportunities for learners of all different styles. Understanding your preferred learning styles and forming a study plan based on the right mix can forever change the way study, learn and view education at large. ONLINE LEARNING SUMMER 2022

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

IF YOU’RE LEARNING ONLINE BY ULRICH BOSER

he debate over the benefits and limitations of online vs in-person learning has raged for decades. Past research has found that online learning can be just as effective as traditional classroom learning. Still, for some students, online classes are the last resort. For others, online learning offers exactly the type of flexible and self-guided learning they prefer. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual classes became the norm for many students. Whatever side of the online vs offline learning debate you land on, the reality is that many of the skills and tools that help students succeed in face-to-face classes are equally useful online. 6 | ONLINE LEARNING SUMMER 2022

With discipline and preparation, even the most anti-online students can develop a learning process that is key to successfully learning online. Here are three key tips to make learning online a rewarding and engaging experience. With practice, you might even find that you prefer it to in-person learning!

1. SET ATTAINABLE GOALS This might seem obvious but without the structure of in-person classes, it can be easy to let assignments and studying from online classes pile up. Setting clear, attainable goals before and during a course is absolutely vital to succeed when learning

online (and in general). Start each online course knowing what you want to get out of it--and what you need to invest in it: » What do you need to learn from this class? » What is this class preparing you for? » How do you hope to perform in this class? » What is your plan if you fall behind? In addition to your learning and performance goals, throughout the course you should be setting measurable goals, such as “I will review course texts for X hours this week” or “I will come to class with 2 questions for the instructor.” And, importantly, you have to hold yourself accountable for meeting your goals. Use of a calendar or projectmanaging application can help keep you on track. Make sure to write things down and don’t rely too heavily on technology. Keep frustrations and emotional reasoning in check. It’s normal. After all, education technology can hinder learning without appropriate limitations. Similarly, try to limit distractions like cell phones especially for children, and social media which is similarly intrusive. Students with individual education plans might have specific needs that are difficult to accommodate in online classrooms. Fortunately, the rapid increase in distance learning in the Spring semester corresponded with increased recognition of the need for virtual special accommodations.

2. MAKE LEARNING ACTIVE Online learning might seem unengaging at times because we often think of it as staring at a screen while someone talks at us. Studies show that passive learning like listening to long lectures doesn’t have as positive an effect on learning as active learning techniques like quizzes and simulations. This holds true whether you’re face-to-face or online. Fortunately, many online learning spaces are interactive and offer opportunities for students to participate and learn actively. Whether your online classroom is an active or passive learning space, you can also use these and other active learning strategies like retrieval practice to help keep yourself actively engaged and learning:

» Take time to think about how you think. Engaging in this type of metacognition improves learning. » Participate in all class activities and ask questions. » Use elaboration, or self-explaining, techniques to better understand new ideas and connect them to other concepts. » Write summaries of concepts and lessons. Writing to learn is a highly effective learning strategy. » Draw concept maps or flow charts to visualize what you’re learning.

3. MAKE LEARNING SOCIAL Possibly the biggest difference between learning online and in a traditional classroom is the social aspect. Not surprisingly, socialization is an important component of learning. Previous studies have found that students have better outcomes in online courses that offer a social component and, in fact, blended online/in-person learning was found to have the most positive student outcome, when compared to in-person learning. When it comes to online learning, remember that you’re not in it alone. Millions of students are taking online classes this semester, many for the first time. There are many ways to connect to other students and improve the social aspects of online learning, including: » Keep the camera on during class. It’s much easier to be social when you can see your instructor and classmates’ faces and they can see yours. » Use the tools like groups that are available on the learning platform to interact with other students, the instructors, and teaching assistants. » Make your learning experience social by sharing it with others. Social commitments are particularly useful. So for instance announce on social media that you’re going to take a French class or that you plan to get a data science certificate. » Consider using online tutors. Virtual tutoring is a great way to meet learning goals while also maintaining the social aspects of in-person learning and meeting the needs of diverse learners. ONLINE LEARNING SUMMER 2022

IN MY OWN WORDS

By ALASTAIR FISCHER World Scholars Academy

Why did you choose to participate in a summer program? After twelve months of hearing the terms ‘inflation’, ‘volatility’ and ‘federal financial assistance’ in a COVID plagued 2020, I began to take a real interest in business and economics. I was also interested in understanding where studying economics and business could take you in terms of career opportunities. I had so many unanswered questions and I thought a summer program would help me find the answers I was looking for. I wanted to explore my passion for the broad area of business with like-minded individuals and learn about the concepts and fundamentals of the subject from an expert in the field. How did you decide which program was right for you? By researching intensive online pre-college introductory business programs and through reading and listening to student testimonials I discovered the WSA Business Academy program. I chose to participate in this specific program because its curriculum incorporated all the core elements I wanted to learn whilst also being set in a collaborative discussion-based environment online with an excellent instructor with experience in the field. What was a typical day in your summer program? A typical day would begin by the group discussing the assigned material from the previous lesson with some challenging conversations and insights from our instructor, Dr Dericks. Then we would move onto learning about an assigned fundamental business concept for the day’s program. Many of these concepts, such as microeconomic price theory and game-theory were concepts that were relatively 8 | ONLINE LEARNING SUMMER 2022

new to the whole group. Dr Dericks would present a thorough and in-depth presentation, supported by real-life business case studies and lively peer discussions to make the concept relevant and understandable. Then we were assigned take-home assignments to reinforce the key learnings from the day. I was amazed that I was able to learn countless complicated business concepts in only two weeks with the help of my instructor and peers. What was the most memorable moment of your summer? My most memorable moment of the program was when we learnt about competitive strategy and Porter’s Five Forces and then utilised these skills in an entrepreneurial challenge. In a Shark Tank like environment, in pairs, we created a product with a scalability and exit goal. We then presented our product to our peer group for feedback and discussion. This exercise was engaging and allowed us to be innovative and put the theory we had learnt into practice. Overall it was both a fun and rewarding experience that has cemented my desire to pursue further study and a career in business. What advice do you have for teens looking at summer programs? Summer programs are a great investment in your future. I would say make sure that you look at programs that specialise in areas you are genuinely curious and passionate. You should do extensive research to ensure that the program’s curriculum is the right one for you and ticks all of your boxes. Make sure that the program will teach you new skills or concepts so that you would have used the opportunity of time to have grown and developed over the holidays.
