he short answer? Yes. A computer science degree teaches you how computers work and how to design and code software to solve real-world problems. In your classes, you’ll learn practical skills like:

What makes this major exciting today is the number of cuttingedge topics available to study, like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain. Most colleges let you focus on areas that interest you, whether you’re into robots, cybersecurity and digital forensics, or video game creation. Many college programs allow you to chart a course to gain the knowledge and experience you need for your target industry.
The skills you learn include more than technical knowledge. You’ll develop problem-solving and creative thinking abilities to help you approach challenges from multiple angles. With a computer science (CS) degree, you might become a software developer, data analyst, system designer, or database administrator. As technology evolves and remains an important part of our lives, understanding how it works gives you a significant advantage, regardless of your ultimate career path.
BUT WHAT ABOUT AI?
While artificial intelligence (AI) has become quite a disrupter in the STEM space, it won’t render CS careers obsolete. AI is becoming a powerful collaborative tool, with computer scientists using it to handle repetitive coding tasks while they design architectures, ensure data security, and find innovative solutions to difficult problems AI can’t solve alone.
AI programming assistants are impressive but still relatively new. They can sometimes produce code that looks correct at first glance but contains subtle logical errors or security vulnerabilities. These mistakes might only become apparent when a program crashes or customer data is compromised.
A CS education teaches you how computers work at their core. You learn how to organize information efficiently using
data structures like arrays, linked lists, and trees. Modern AI tools can generate basic code snippets, but they lack the deeper understanding human programmers develop through comprehensive education.

ake a look at any list of the hardest college majors, and you’ll see plenty of STEM degrees. From computer science and environmental science to chemistry and nuclear engineering, STEM degrees are some of the most challenging to earn. Tackling one of these demanding majors is a big commitment on its own, but some ambitious students decide to pursue not one but two majors.
While earning two degrees sounds like a cool idea, double majoring isn’t for everyone. It requires a whole lot of dedication and a commitment to time management and perseverance. About 20% of all college students choose to double major. Some are passionate about two different fields. Others want to maximize their return on investment.
According to U.S. News, double majoring nearly always predicts higher earning potential — especially when one of your degrees is STEM-related. In addition to your STEM expertise, you’ll develop a wide skill set, increasing your versatility and
marketability. Plus, taking advanced courses in topics outside your primary major helps you expand your perspective on complex issues.

You may have heard that STEM and the humanities are opposites, but that’s exactly why they work so well together. Studying the humanities helps improve your logical and creative thinking abilities while boosting reading comprehension and writing skills.
Communications: Pairing STEM with communications can help you translate complex technical information and concepts into clear, digestible content. Building communication skills is especially useful for sharing your ideas with non-STEM individuals, such as project managers, C-suite executives, and the general public.
Political Science: Dream of working for the EPA, DoD, NSA, or another government agency? Consider adding a political science major or concentration. Understanding government processes, laws, and ethics can prepare you for a career working in public service or with companies that contract with the U.S. government.
Anthropology: This field often straddles the line between humanities and STEM, making it a perfect complement to a STEM degree. Understanding what makes us human can spark innovations for a better world.
If you want a second major to boost your employability, you can’t go wrong with a business degree. Many businesses want (or need) to hire STEM professionals; understanding how businesses operate can open doors at top companies set you up for future leadership roles.
Business: A business program helps you build confidence in non-STEM areas like budgeting, strategic planning, marketing, and operations. If you’re trying to build the next big tech company, studying entrepreneurship and management will teach you how to take your ideas and turn them into a growing, thriving business.
Economics: If you like math, statistics, or data science, economics allows you to apply your technical skills to real-world challenges, such as tackling income inequality or analyzing the effects of government policy on consumers. STEM majors who study economics are well prepared for careers in finance, investment, and economic policy-making.
Finance: Adding finance can lead to more lucrative roles in quantitative analysis or risk management. A finance degree sharpens your math and stats skills as you learn about corporate finance, banking, accounting, trading, and risk management — which is often taught with a STEM-designated curriculum.
Many of healthcare’s incredible advancements were made possible because of the integration of STEM-related fields, especially technology. If you want to improve healthcare systems and patient outcomes, consider pairing your STEM degree with a health-related major.
Public Health: This major explores the factors behind healthrelated problems facing communities worldwide. Combining it with a STEM degree can prepare you for careers in epidemiology, public health engineering, and biostatistics, for example.
Health Sciences: This interdisciplinary degree provides a broad foundation, introducing you to healthcare systems, medical ethics, and health policy. It’s an excellent stepping stone to a future in healthcare, from medical school to research. For instance, this degree might help a future biomedical engineer develop a deeper understanding of how the work they do integrates in the patient experience.
Pharmaceutical Sciences: If you like chemistry, biology, or engineering, pharmaceutical sciences could be a natural fit. You learn about the science of compounds, studying how they’re designed and how they affect the human body, setting you up for a career in drug discovery and development.
Finally, you may also decide to combine two STEM fields. But is double majoring in STEM really worth the inevitable frustration? The answer depends on your career goals and your primary field of study. Pairing computer and data science might feel redundant, yet pairing computer science with chemical engineering might be the perfect combo. If you want to stay focused on STEM, consider these three options.
Computer Science: As one of the most widely employable STEM majors, computer science complements many other majors for those interested in computer-related careers. If you’re leaning towards electrical engineering, for example, a CS degree could open doors in chip design, firmware, and other hybrid disciplines.
Statistics: Since most fields use statistics, it’s a very practical STEM double major, as statistical models improve outcomes in nearly all STEM disciplines. For example, engineering relies on stats to optimize production processes. Physics uses stats to analyze experimental data.
Data Science: This major integrates principles of mathematics, statistics, and computer science, teaching you how to collect, understand, and analyze data. Many programs also cover AI and machine learning — perfect if you’re eyeing careers in these rapidly growing industries.
A caveat: Not all schools make it easy to pursue a double major, and some may have strict restrictions for STEM majors. For example, neither the University of Michigan nor UC Riverside allows students to double major in computer science and data science. If you want to earn two STEM degrees, explore dual degree programs, review the college’s policies, and meet with your academic advisor once on campus to discuss your options.

hinking about a career in a STEM field? Lots of students believe getting into a top STEM program means focusing on challenging classes and earning the highest possible grades, but that’s not the whole story.
STEM education is a big deal today, not just because we need experts who understand science, technology, engineering, and math. STEM also teaches valuable skills useful in any career (and in life, too), including teamwork, problem-solving, and creative thinking. Here’s the good news: You can start building those skills in high school.
Want to explore your interest in STEM and see if a future STEM career is right for you? Try any (or all) of these steps.
High school classes can give you a head-start for a solid math and science foundation. If your school offers
honors or AP versions, consider taking them. Note that this list isn’t exhaustive, and your school may offer other relevant classes, so check with your counselor (or the course catalog). Start with these basics:
• Math: Algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, statistics
• Science: biology, chemistry, physics
Did you know: Colleges have begun classifying “economics” as a STEM rather than a social science field, as it relies heavily on math — especially at the graduate level. Some engineering programs also require you to take a course in engineering economics, which uses economic principles to evaluate engineering projects.
Many high schools now offer career and technology education (CTE) programs or tracks. While these classes might not have the same prestige as AP classes, they’re valuable for aspiring STEM students, especially if you’re interested in engineering. College engineering courses often focus on theory, but CTE courses invite you to experience
real-world applications, giving you a better understanding of what engineers do. In some cases, you can even earn certifications after taking classes like:
• Architectural design and drafting
• Automotive technology
• Information technology
• Manufacturing (carpentry, electrical wiring, metalworking)
• Welding
A third option for high schoolers? Engineering prep courses that aren’t necessarily part of a CTE program. These classes require you to learn and apply math and science to actual engineering problems while you learn about design, construction, operation, maintenance, and manufacturing. Course options might include:
• Introduction to engineering design/ engineering design and development
• Principles of applied engineering
• Robotics
• Computer science
• Digital electronics
STEM careers require more than hard skills like science and math. You need strong soft skills, which are essential abilities that help you communicate and collaborate effectively.
• Communication: You’ll need to explain complex ideas clearly and concisely. Believe it or not, reading and analyzing literature boosts your critical thinking and ability to understand others’ perspectives.
• Creativity and the arts: Art makes you a better STEM professional because it helps you see things differently, visualize complex objects, and communicate more effectively. Engineering, for example, relies on creativity to design innovative solutions. Even a drawing class can improve your ability to represent 3D objects in 2D, a skill engineers use constantly.
• Critical thinking: Curiosity, a knack for analyzing things, and a drive to understand how things work are key to succeeding in school (and beyond). Looking at information from different angles and using logic and reasoning to solve problems is a skill that will help you in any subject, and it’s crucial for STEM. One Pearson survey found that over 80% of companies value critical thinking abilities when they’re vetting potential new hires.
• Foreign language: Learning another language can enhance your future. Research shows that bilingual people are often better at multitasking. Plus, speaking another language opens doors to different cultures, which is valuable in today’s diverse STEM workplaces.
• Networking and teamwork: All careers rely on networking, often in less traditional settings, like a golf course. Fun fact: according to Syracuse University, 90% of Fortune 500 CEOs hit the links, and 54% see the sport as perfect for networking. So join your school’s golf team to start! Other team sports, like basketball, baseball or softball, or clubs like chess, teach you the importance of teamwork, persistence, and patience — essential qualities for STEM professionals working in collaborative environments.
• Perseverance: Sticking with something, even when it’s tough, is necessary in challenging subjects. Your teachers play a role in helping you develop these qualities. And if you believe you can learn, you’re more likely to keep trying even when things get hard. Set realistic goals, track your progress, and celebrate the effort (not just the correct answer).
• Public speaking: Classes like speech, debate, and theater can help build the confidence and persuasiveness you’ll need to present your research to a room of experts or investors.
STEM clubs are great for deepening your interests and boosting future prospects. See what your school offers, like subject-specific clubs for math or science. Professional organizations like the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) have programs for younger students. Other options include the Technology Student Association (TSA), a national group for students interested in STEM fields.
Other clubs your school might offer include:
• Computer science or coding
• Robotics (BEST Robotics, FIRST Robotics Challenge, FIRST Tech Challenge, NASA Robotics, VEX Robotics)
• Engineering
• Science Olympiad
• Girls Who Code
• National Science Bowl
• HOSA - Future Health Professionals
Participating in these clubs has great perks. You might get to attend summer camps, compete in quiz bowls, get newsletters, or connect with mentors and find scholarship opportunities. If you become an officer, you’ll gain leadership skills, too.
Academic competitions are great for challenging yourself and working with a team. There are tons of options, too,
like science fairs. The International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is the “world championship” of science fairs. Another option is the National Science Bowl hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy. See whether your school participates in science olympiads like the Chemistry Olympiad or Biolympiad. 6.FIND A MAKERSPACE AT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY OR COMMUNITY COLLEGE
If your high school doesn’t have many options or you’re looking for STEM experiences outside of school, see if your area has any makerspaces. These are community workshops where people with shared interests in making, learning, and exploring come together. Whether you’re into art, computers, machining, science, or technology, you may find something that sparks your interest.
Check your local library, community college, or community center. Makerspaces offer tools and resources to bring your projects to life. While tools vary, you may find equipment like 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines. It’s a great way to access tools and learn new skills you might not otherwise have a chance to explore.
The cool thing about developing STEM skills even if you choose a different profession? They’re universal and will give you a solid foundation for college, career, and beyond.

While the earning potential is definitely higher, so is the cost of living — expenses like rent and car insurance can really eat into your net income. If the lower range of STEM salaries feels discouraging, remember they’re still higher than the average non-STEM salary. Plus, when you factor in the cost of living, a smaller salary in the right place can stretch much further than you might think.
Organizations like Robert Half make it easy to find average salaries for all STEM fields, from AI and machine learning to IT and cybersecurity. You can also filter by location to get a sense of what people earn depending on where they live.
Overall, it’s clear that STEM fields pay well. However, as with any career, a bachelor’s degree doesn’t automatically guarantee a high salary. Some industries are more lucrative, and job location has an influence, too.
