You Might Not Imagine
BY BARBRA WEIDLEIN lthough many musicians perform, most don’t rely only on performance to meet their financial and career needs. Making it in classical ensemble or musical theater, as a singer/songwriter or with a band can be a slow and uneven journey – even when it works! And not every musician wants to perform. So what else can you do with your life if you really want to major in music? Here are some options.
1. MUSIC TECHNOLOGY If you’re passionate about music and consider yourself a computer nerd, music technology may be a good fit. Many music schools offer majors in recording, production and/or acoustical engineering. Each school labels its program differently and provides its own mix of training and experience. One warning: Music technology is a rapidly changing field. Professionals must keep up with the latest advances in order to remain employable.
2. MUSIC INDUSTRY Careers in the music industry include artist management, concert promotion, music publishing, tour management, business management, music
instrument manufacturing and distribution, and working behind the scenes to support live and recorded music. Like music technology, the field is constantly changing. Internships are extremely important in the world of the music industry. The more skills and hands-on experience you gain before you launch your career, the more options you’ll have for employment.
3. MUSIC THERAPY Music therapists use music to address physical, emotional, cognitive or social/behavioral problems. They work in hospitals and in private practice. Clients may include children and adults on the autism spectrum, infants in neonatal intensive care, elders with Alzheimer’s disease or veterans. The American Music Therapy Association dictates a curriculum that includes the study of music and psychology, along with biology, social and behavioral sciences and a lengthy internship.
4. ARTS MANAGEMENT Most people in the arts mangement field have a degree in the arts, such as music, and get a master’s degree in arts management to expand their skill set. The work is often in the nonprofit sector and may include finding and cultivating »

donors; fundraising; developing and strengthening the board of directors; managing events or an arts center; or creating and managing an ensemble. It’s good to have strong marketing, accounting and leadership skills.
Some undergraduate music education programs lead directly to accreditation in the state where the undergrad program is earned. Others don't, in which case students may need another year to get the accreditation.
5. MUSIC EDUCATION
Teaching on the college level requires at least a master’s degree and more often a doctorate.
Proficient musicians who are passionate about sharing their love and understanding of music will find teaching students on the K-12 level a very fulfilling career. The good news is that many college-level music programs boast a 100 percent employment rate for students graduating in music education. The not-so-good news is that K-12 music programs are constantly on the chopping block. Jobs may be jeopardized. Teachers may need to travel to more than one school to teach classes and may be responsible for teaching both instrumental and vocal music.
6. MUSICOLOGY If you’re fascinated by the history of music or love studying the music of other cultures, a career in musicology/ethnomusicology (the lines between these two have blurred) may be worth exploring. This is an academic field of music that incorporates extensive research, writing, getting published and presenting at conferences all over the world. Graduate training is essential, as is the study of foreign languages.

hat do “Finding Nemo” and a radio ad for a small-town pizza parlor have in common? Both rely on the vocal talents of people you probably never see. Big-budget animated movies provide high-paying speaking roles for movie stars, but you don’t need to be famous to find performing arts opportunities in voice-over. For example, while some audiobooks are read by celebrities like Claire Danes, who narrated Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” most are read by people like Elizabeth Wiley, associate professor of theater at the College of William & Mary in Virginia. (She was named a finalist in the Audie Awards, the industry’s equivalent of the Oscars, for reading “And Then There Were Nuns,” a memoir by Jane Christmas.) “Voice-over acting is anywhere you hear a voice and don’t see a face, whether it’s on radio or television commercials, or the station IDs, or animation and video games, which is the really fun stuff,” Heather Vergo, director of development at the Los Angelesbased Atlas Talent Agency, said. “Some actors wind up doing every piece of that.” A few high-demand voice-over artists work full time
in the industry. More often, someone fits it into a career that mixes other creative pursuits. For example, Jessica Schechter is a New York City-based actress and the director of education at the Voice Shop at CMD, a Manhattan-based voice-over studio that has a roster of more than 1,000 voice actors and hires for jobs in 80 different languages. “It’s so thrilling to tell a story,” she said. “Even if it’s four words of a commercial voice-over and you’re saying 'Toyota, let’s go places,' there is so much you’re communicating. I’m envisioning the kind of people who are going on an adventure. I love to tell those stories and help products reach the audience and have my voice be the vehicle to make that happen.” Schechter started doing voice-overs when she was in middle school, when a teacher had her record vocals for a video presentation at a school assembly. She went on to earn a bachelor’s in educational theater at New York University and an MFA in directing at Pace University. Her voice-over work included providing the voices for two characters for an animated TV series, “Realabilities.” The first step in a voice-over career is to get trained in a range of acting skills. “Any avenue of acting you go down has its foundations to be able to do it well,” Vergo said. »

Improv and stand-up comedy classes can be helpful, she said, but eventually you need to take some classes focusing on voice-over techniques. “There are classes in every aspect,” Vergo said. “If you want to do animation or games, take a class in that. I recommend people take a commercial class first. That tends to be a voice-over artist’s bread and butter. It’s what they make the most money in, and it’s easier to get into.” The next step is making a demo recording. While it’s possible to do that at home with some recording software and a high-quality mike, Vergo recommends a professionally made demo. “Once you make a demo for each category you want to work in, then you can pitch yourself to agents and see if they’re interested in what you have to offer and if they need someone like you on their roster,” she said. “The reality is it’s a hard field to get into, but if you
really want to do it and you work your butt off, lots of people succeed, and it’s a really rewarding career.” Audiobooks also require good acting, said Wiley, who teaches acting, voice and dialects at William & Mary. “Even if you’re doing a work of nonfiction, talking about, say, the history of immigration at the turn of the 20th century, you still have to know how to best communicate the thought-line of the author’s intent or the character’s thought.” Actors enjoy the freedom and playfulness often found in voice-over work as well as the chance to use many of the acting skills they’ve learned, Vergo said. “It’s such a rush when you’re on the mike,” Schechter said. “I love picking out new personas and having that captured and matching it to images. There’s something so harmonious about the process.”

Why did you pick AMDA? When I decided I wanted to become an actor, I knew I needed to get the best performing arts education possible. I started researching and auditioning for potential performing arts programs. My mom actually introduced me to AMDA after she found the website in a Google search. I auditioned and decided to go visit AMDA to see what it was all about. I feel in love with AMDA the moment I walked on campus.

American Musical and Dramatic Academy How did you discover your passion for performing? My mom put me in dance and singing lessons at age 3 and I feel in love. I loved to be in front of an audience and have all the attention on me. Before I stepped out on stage, I anticipated hearing the crowd murmur in their seats before the curtain rose and getting that rush of adrenaline before the lights go on. So I always knew I wanted to be a part of the arts. At age 10, I entered and won a singing competition. What’s your favorite part about performing? The process: Picking up a script, memorizing it, creating a character, and getting to portray someone else’s story. I love every aspect of creating. What’s the hardest part for you about performing? Learning not to take things personally, especially at auditions. If you don’t book the job, it’s not because you're not good enough, it’s just that you're not what they're looking for at this moment.
The teachers, faculty members and staff were so kind and created a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone could explore their craft in a safe space. The faculty is all working professionals. You learn from the best of the best and make amazing connections. The connections you make at school with peers and faculty lead to new opportunities outside of school. The school itself is such an inspiring place to be. Your peers push you to work harder for what you want so you can achieve your goals in school and later outside of school. AMDA is supporting you from Day 1 until after graduation and beyond. To me, AMDA just felt just like home. What has been your favorite part of this program? My favorite part about AMDA is there are so many diverse training opportunities. You are trained in more than just your discipline of choice. I had acting, singing and dance training but also voiceover, film production, on-camera classes, voiceover and speech, accents and dialects, health and fitness classes. Plus, all of your academic classes pertain to the arts. Instead of general English and science classes, at AMDA they offer screenwriting, playwriting, kinesiology and vocal anatomy classes. How do you think this program will help in what you want to do next? One of the requirements at AMDA is to learn how to audition. I have auditioned so many times in school that I am now ready to take on auditions outside of school. I feel comfortable walking into an audition room and reassured that I will succeed as I have practiced so many times. Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years? My goal is to perform in a musical on Broadway or be a film producer in Hollywood.

The University of Arizona College of Fine Arts How did you discover your passion for percussion performance? My father, the only other musician in my family, was a singer, songwriter and keyboardist. However, my father never had the financial means to pursue an education in music. It was not until a month after my father passed away, when I was 10, that I discovered my passion for music. I began private percussion lessons with Brian J. Harris in Tucson, Arizona, with the initial grandiose dream of becoming a famous rock drummer. But, everyone always asks about the spark that first caused the fire. Lately, I have found more significance in reminding myself of why I am continuing to
Today, for example, I continue to perform because the pursuit of music constantly challenges me and inspires me. I continue to perform because it connects me to the memory of my father as I fulfill this dream for the both of us. I continue to perform because I cannot fathom a life without music. Having personally experienced the transformative and healing effects of music, I believe my social responsibility, as a musician, is to use music to inspire, empower and positively affect others. How do you think your undergraduate studies at The University of Arizona College of Fine Arts will help in what you want to do next? I never expected to stay in Arizona for my undergraduate career. However, looking back now, I have no doubt that I made the right decision. I am fortunate that The University of Arizona provided me with the opportunities to perform as a musician around the world, from guest timpanist with the Moscow Symphony in Russia to a marimba soloist in British Columbia. The members of the Tucson community helped support my career with their genuine love and appreciation of the arts. The University of Arizona afforded me the unique flexibility to shape my own education and pave my own path, while the faculty worked one-on-one with me to develop my technical foundation and my “brand” as a musician. I begin my graduate studies next semester at The University of Georgia, on a full assistantship. I take this next step in my education with the confidence that my lasting network back at The U of A has equipped me with a solid foundation on which to continue to grow as a musician and to eventually achieve my dream career of performing with a major symphony orchestra.

mart phones and YouTube have opened the door for thousands of aspiring filmmakers to record their stories. And the idea that your video could go viral, rack up lots of “likes” and lead to you being discovered is certainly tantalizing. But, if you expect your short film to make it to the finals of a major film festival, land you a production deal and launch your career … well, that’s another story. I’m not trying to squash your dreams of film school and a career. I just want to alert you that those stars in your eyes can be blinding. If your goal is to tell your story in the way you want to tell it, you can, and you should. Invest the time to learn all you can about what it takes to get a project off the ground. By almost any measure, Nathan Silver is a very successful independent filmmaker. A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of Arts, Silver has written and directed five short films and seven feature films. His films have played at festivals and venues around the world, including the New
York Film Festival, Locarno, Tribeca, Rotterdam, Mar Del Plata, Viennale and MoMA. But Silver will be the first to tell you that if you’re looking for a steady income, independent filmmaking may not be for you. “If movies are your life, you build your life around them, but movies don't pay the bills,” he says. “You might have to work less-than-desirable jobs, live in a shoebox and not be able to enjoy a day off. ... If you're crazy enough to want to make movies, the fact that you're making them will make it all feel like it's worth it.” So far, his success and commitment to his craft have led him to pursue a career path that moves from project to project. He offers this advice for starting out: “Make your first movies for as little money as possible with family and friends. You'll have plenty of time to work with strangers and, perhaps, with larger budgets down the line. It's important to see what you can do with as little as possible, to see how you fail and let your failures shape your future attempts.” »

Like many young filmmakers, Silver turned to crowdfunding to help finance his earlier projects. However, the competition is fierce, and the success rate for films funded this way is declining. KickStarter, one of the most popular sites, has helped launch close to 48,000 film and video projects since 2009 with an average success rate of 43 percent. But that rate is dropping, according to Stephen Follows, a film producer, writer and consultant who studies film industry data. And, there is a huge difference between raising money for an independent film and being able to support oneself in the production industry. If you’re serious about a career in production, you may have to lower your sights a bit. No one starts at the top. Most important is to understand the scope of the production business. The key word in that last sentence is business. Film and video production is a business or often a function of a larger business.
Content, audience and budgets may vary, but the production skills needed to develop and complete a project from beginning to end are basically the same. Larger productions often require more specialized skills, but the experience you acquire working on a project of any size is generally transferable or can be built upon. Gaining actual experience working on a production, being able to observe and participate on a working set or location, seeing how a budget is created and following a project through planning to post-production is invaluable. As in any business, what you do when given an opportunity, what you learn on the job and how you continue to invest in yourself will help propel your career. And remember, in every business someone with a financial responsibility has to make a judgment that your work is worth their time and investment as well. So take advantage of every situation to learn something new that will expand your knowledge. It will pay off in the long run.

STAGE PARENT BY BILL O’NEILL hen it comes to the acting world, Lou Ursone says he’s seen it all and done it all. A professional actor, he's appeared in commercials, feature films and TV shows like “Law & Order” and had a recurring role on the daytime drama “Loving.” He’s also chief executive officer and artistic director of Curtain Call, a nonprofit community theater in Stamford, Conn. That’s the same theater where he caught the acting bug as a child. Based on all that experience, he has some thoughts about what stage parents can do to help (or harm) a teen’s performing arts future. “The No. 1 rule would be never, never, never ever criticize your child’s director,” he says. After a brief pause, just to be sure he’s clear, he adds, “Don’t!” Criticizing the director for any reason – whether it’s the casting decisions or the staging of the show – “undermines everything,” he says. “You shouldn’t be bashing the coach who didn’t put your kid in a soccer or Little League game, either, but some parents do it.” Here are some more of his do’s and don’ts for stage parents: Do encourage your child to give theater a try. “Theater is self-esteem-building. They always say the No. 1 fear for people is public speaking. If you
develop a comfort with being in front of people at an early age, it doesn’t matter what you do, you’re going to have that skill. ... It’s just as much a collaboration as baseball or soccer.” Do find ways to get involved. “Any community theater is going to welcome a parent volunteer on any number of levels. We’ll have a Saturday morning where we’ll have the cast and crew together building scenery, painting scenery or cleaning the stage area to get ready for a show. It’s a great way for the parents to get to know us a little better.” Do help with home rehearsals. “Learning lines is a muscle-memory thing. It takes time. One of the best ways is to have someone do the scenes with you. But don’t give your child ideas on line readings or inflections. Just being there to read the scene back and forth with them is a great way to do it.” Do encourage your child to try new things. “Don’t get involved with one community theater and just stay there because it’s comfortable. If there’s another community theater in your area and they’re doing a show that you think might be a better learning experience, encourage (your child) to go there.” Do stay positive. “Never review your child or critique them after a performance other than in an encouraging way. »

Let kids make their own choices, and encourage them as much as you can.” Do help young performers deal with rejection. “Theater’s a rotten business, as far as emotions. Rejection is hard, whether you’re trying out for Little League or auditioning for a show. Rejection is awful, but it’s the nature of what we do in creating theater. “Sometimes there’s no other answer than, ‘It just didn’t work out. You couldn’t have sung it better. You couldn’t have danced it better. You did a great job. It just didn’t work out.’ And you have to be able to deal with that part of the process.” Don’t try to be the director. “Don’t give the child direction, unless you happen to be a professional director yourself – and then you would know better. ...
“If the director or musical director has told you to work on your role and gives you the direction and develops the performance in a certain way, then that is who you need to follow. If your mother thinks you should have been singing louder or any number of things, it doesn’t matter.” Don’t hover. “The best parents are the ones who drop them off and let the kids have … a personal experience. You can’t ride your kid’s school bus every day, and you shouldn’t get involved or be on-site during a rehearsal." Don’t try to live your dreams through your kids. “Just because you didn’t make it as a Rockette, don’t force your kid to be a dancer. Be sure you have a realistic view of their skills. Everyone thinks their little Johnny and Mary are the best dancers out there, but it doesn’t always happen.”

Portfolio preparation is an art form in itself. But you can learn to refine it at one of more than three dozen National Portfolio Day events, held annually in the United States, Canada and overseas.

These college fair-style events, held in conjunction with the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (www.portfolioday.net), bring together many college representatives in one venue to provide one-on-one critiques before art students actually apply to colleges.
"The mistake that a lot of students make is standing in line for three hours to speak to someone from RISD for 10 minutes. … There are many other top art schools that will have shorter lines and will provide excellent feedback," says Carl Lopes, a Cape Cod studio artist who, for 20 years, was visual arts director for the Art and Applied Technology Department at Barnstable High School in Hyannis, Mass.
The best time to attend a portfolio day is during junior year, before you begin the college application process, says Barry Beach, an arts-school admissions adviser based in San Rafael, Calif.
Up to 60 schools can be represented at a portfolio day, so students need a strategy, he says. He advises arriving early and knowing exactly what schools you want to target.
“These professionals want to see who (the students) are, what their future college plans are, and what their fears and concerns are,” he says. “They also want to review a student's work and show them how they can make it better.”
He also advises students that college representatives want to gain a sense of who the student is as a person.
That’s the point of attending junior year: having time to incorporate feedback into your artwork or to develop a missing skill before your portfolio is submitted with a college application. Beach, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R.I., says that portfolios should include the best of your most recent work, but not too much. It is better to go with

Anna Pating, 19, a student at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., was nervous when she showed her portfolio to college admissions representatives, but they provided her with a solid outline of what they wanted to see during the application process. »

"Each school wanted to see a variety of raw artwork, but they were really different when it came to things like creative work,” she says. “Some schools, like RISD, wanted to see things set up very traditionally, and they had little interest in creative pieces, while Pratt representatives were happy to see a variety of creative pieces.” Pating, from San Francisco, was the first in her family to attend art school and worked with Beach during her senior year. Having an expert to guide her through the art-school application process was important, she says, since her family was unfamiliar with the process. "It can be really overwhelming when you are applying to a bunch of schools that all want different things, and it can be really stressful," Pating says.
PORTFOLIO DAY TIPS 1. Include 12 to 15 quality pieces of work. 2. Be open to a variety of colleges. 3. Get feedback from different kinds of programs, such as fine arts and animation. 4. Take notes. 5. Attend in your junior year. 6. Talk to representatives from digital programs. 7. Save all your artwork from freshman through junior year. 8. Include pieces based on your own initiative. 9. Include pieces stemming from visual discoveries – a drawing, for example, of that old sneaker in a corner of your messy room. 10. Get feedback from teachers before portfolio day. 11. Be open to criticism.

How did you discover your passion for graphic design? Starting as a kid, I was always interested in art, design and technology. My dad and uncle gave me the original egg shaped ‘90s iMac when I was young and the exposure to technology and graphic-design software made me interested in seeing what I could create. After high school, I had the chance to mix art, typography and digital graphics to create an ad and it all came together for me.
How do you think LCAD will help in what you want to do next? LCAD professors have industry experience and prepare us to know what will be expected of us as designers once we're out in the field. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I see myself designing, possibly managing brand identities and working across multiple mediums. I would also love taking everything I learn while working and passing it on to design students.

senior year of high school, I attended their threeweek high school musical theater camp. I had the chance to live on campus, work directly with the faculty in a variety of master classes, and perform a full-length production in the historic Kirkpatrick Auditorium. After the camp ended, I knew this university would forever have my heart. What is your favorite part about attending OKCU? My favorite thing about OKCU is the camaraderie of the students. Every day when walking to classes I always must leave a few minutes early because I know that I will stop and talk to someone or receive a hug from a fellow student. Everyone knows each other by name. The friendships that I have formed here with not only students, but faculty as well, will truly last a lifetime. How do you think attending OKCU will help your career?

When looking back on my incredible four years here at OKCU, it is hard to narrow it down to one thing that has helped me further my career, but I will list a few that have opened so many doors for me. First, I had the privilege of performing on Broadway alongside Kristin Chenoweth in her one-woman show, “My Love Letter To Broadway.” I also had the honor of interning with New York City’s top casting agency, Telsey + Company. And finally, I have been able to participate in 11 major productions here on campus in addition to being involved with over 10 organizations. Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years? With graduation rapidly approaching, I am so excited to see what the future holds for me. In 10 years, I hope to be working for a major casting agency in New York City as either a casting assistant or fulltime casting director. OKCU has laid an incredible foundation for me and I am so grateful to have spent my time at this amazing university. I am so excited to continue to be an ambassador for OKCU when I leave and cannot wait to see its incredible legacy live on with the next generation

Be Brave: GO FOR THE
MUSIC MAJOR! BY BARBRA WEIDLEIN
re you apprehensive about majoring in music? Are your parents worried about a performing arts degree or trying to convince you to go in another direction? Here are the top five concerns music students have shared with me as they approach their college applications. Addressing them directly will help you get to a place of making better choices and decisions that will serve you well in college and beyond. Some of these questions are applicable to any performing or visual arts student who is trying to decide on a major. Remember: It’s easier to opt out of music if you find it really doesn’t work for you than to switch to music or try to add it later in your college career.
1. WHAT IF I’M NOT A PRODIGY? Most musicians who’ve done well in their careers were not prodigies, either. They learned early on to practice effectively and work hard to become successful. While you’re in high school, find a good teacher to help you develop your technical skills, your artistry and a basic foundation in music theory. Develop an efficient practice schedule that improves your technique. Learn ways of preventing performance-related pain and injury. And look to summer music programs to take your music to the next level and help you see whether music is really the right path to pursue in college.
2. AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR MAJORING IN MUSIC? Are you passionate about music? Are you already somewhat proficient on an instrument or as a singer? Does recording or producing music fire you up? If you can’t imagine spending your time in college focusing on anything other than music, then majoring in music is definitely worth exploring. You don’t have to limit yourself to just music. An increasing number of students double major in music and science, math, engineering, psychology or other nonmusical subjects. Others pick up a minor or two. Sure, it’s more work. But the good news is that the broader your knowledge base and skill set, the more options you’ll have when you graduate.
3. HOW WILL I EARN A LIVING? In the 21st century, musicians have to be able to do more than excel on their instruments in order to pay rent and put food on the table. If you major in music with the intention of building a career in music, be sure to learn some relevant business and communication skills while you’re still in school. Get some basic entrepreneurship training as well. It will prove to be useful regardless of your instrument, genre or focus. Seek opportunities for practical experiences in goalsetting, networking, organizing gigs and collaborating with other artists while the safety net of college is still available. »

4. WILL I BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE COMPETITION? The competition in music can be pretty fierce. So you’ll want to do everything possible to face it head on. What’s the hardest part for you about performing? Basically the other side of that same coin. Putting yourself out there completely and intently is not only extremely exhausting in some cases, but also very intimidating. I’ve had to go through some pretty extreme events on stage, including killing myself, and things like that require a lot of vulnerability for me to truly allow myself to feel what the character is feeling in those moments. The initial feelings of producing the truth in it are more intimidating than doing it in front of an audience after rehearsing it forever, in my opinion. Why did you pick Cleveland State?
SARAH BLUBAUGH
I felt really motivated by the city lifestyle surrounding Cleveland State University. There’s something about being surrounded by people that you don’t know, all on their way to achieve their own goals, that really motivates me to work hard on mine. I also couldn’t compare going to school within the second largest theater district outside of New York City to any opportunities at another school. We are literally surrounded every day by professionals doing what we hope to do, and that daily reminder to work for my goals is all I could really hope a college could do for me.
How did you discover your passion for theater?
What has been your favorite part of attending Cleveland State?

In high school I always had a hard time finding a group of people to join, and one day I went to see my high school performance of “The Diary of Anne Frank.” They all looked like they truly enjoyed being on stage together. I joined the spring musical and somehow along the way of searching for friends I found my passion for the actual art of theater and I never looked back. I’ve got a few things I like to dabble in, mostly guitar and photography. I also play a mean game of volleyball when I can actually convince my friends to take me on. What’s your favorite part about performing? The opportunity to impact the audience. I think a lot of what media perceives as art is self-expression in a sense of serving yourself, but for me, having a public form of self-expression allows me to be myself, while still allowing the audience to cultivate empathy for those around us. It allows me to learn about myself through the experiences of others.
The opportunities I’ve had. I’ve been really fortunate to have had a lot of time to experience the stage while being here and I’d have to say most of my hardest lessons I’ve had to learn in college were all learned through time in a production. That real world experience while in college is vital to being a performer as a profession, and I’ve been so lucky to have had so many different opportunities to have that. How do you think this program will help in what you want to do next? A lot of this field is about who you know, and that is something that CSU has a lot to offer students. It is often overlooked but it’s not only about knowing the professors so that they can connect you with jobs, but it’s also about how they see you work while you are in their classes and around the department. So this program has really helped me with honing my work ethic and professionalism to continue making connections and showing people that I am someone that people hopefully want to work with in the future.

What’s the hardest part of performing for you? I sometimes find it difficult to clear my mind. Particularly when singing in a new place or in front of new people, the mind can race and distract me from being in the moment. Why did you pick Seton Hill? I visited Seton Hill University as a courtesy to my cousin, who lived in Greensburg (Pa.) at the time. After falling in love with the main campus, I fell in love all over again with the new Performing Arts Center. I was also fortunate to be given an impromptu voice lesson from the choir director. The small-school environment and compassionate faculty and staff balanced with a successful music reputation were the points that sold me.

Seton Hill University School of Visual & Performing Arts How did you discover your passion for music and theater? I have two older cousins and an older sister. I grew up attending their choir concerts, musical theater performances and marching band competitions. So, I naturally took the earliest opportunities to sing in the choir and play in the band. When the time came to pursue a college education, there was absolutely no doubt that music was my lifelong passion and my calling. What’s your favorite part of performing? I enjoy the opportunities to portray vastly different people. Characters written with vibrant, fantastic personalities create an entirely separate world from the sometimes dull “real world.” Performing is a form of escape for me in this way.
What has been your favorite part of the Visual and Performing Arts experience at Seton Hill? At the risk of sounding selfish, I will honestly say that my solo performances have been the highlight of my time at Seton Hill. I have been fortunate enough to sing standards with our jazz combo, participate as a guest in numerous recitals as well as perform my own, and portray several roles in musical theater. How do you think this program will help in what you want to do next? My professors and voice teachers are constantly performing, and the fact that they are still active in their fields is quite promising. I have already been put in touch with professionals everywhere from the cruise-line industry to professional theater companies. I have recently secured a position as a church music director, and this was only made possible through the connections of faculty and alumni. Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years? In 10 years, I hope to continue to direct church music as well as choirs at the collegiate level. I will also have built up a private studio and a performing career. Though I will be extremely busy, I will be pursuing what I love and will be able to comfortably support my family.

How to find your Audience on
SOCIAL MEDIA BY BARBRA WEIDLEIN
ou may have forgotten there was ever a time when you weren’t connecting with friends, family and total strangers on Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Google+, Tumblr, YouTube, Vine or Twitter; through online pinboards like Pinterest; and on texting and messaging apps like Kik or WhatsApp. Social media channels provide fast and easy ways to stay in touch with whomever and whatever you’re interested in, no matter where you are. As you grow your art form, you’ll probably join other artists in using social media to announce upcoming performances and shows, connect with fans, share music or videos, raise money for your projects and even impress performing and visual arts summer programs and colleges. Perhaps you’re already doing this. By taking the following ideas to heart, you’ll be able to use social media effectively and without regret.
1. SOCIAL MEDIA IS ONLY ONE OF MANY WAYS TO CONNECT. It’s easy to fall for the illusion that if you post every day or even several times a day on Facebook or Instagram or on any other social media platform, people will flock to your performance. Limiting yourself to social media to fill the seats at your concert or event will likely lead to disappointment. While that may work for seasoned
artists with huge followings, it’s essential to learn additional ways to promote your creative work. Social media alone is not likely to make you a star. And make sure you understands all the safety risks of Facebook and other platforms.
2. YOUR PROFICIENCY LEVEL IS MOST IMPORTANT. As a performing or visual artist, the quality of your work needs to be high enough to draw and sustain interest. Social media is a way to communicate about your performing and visual arts achievements, not a substitute for proficiency.
3. TO BE EFFECTIVE, CONSISTENCY IS ESSENTIAL. Creating a following through social media requires consistency and frequency. Your followers will expect a certain kind of presence from you, and if you let them down, they’ll go away. This requires a daily investment of time in order to consider what and when to post, and then to actually post it. Don’t bore your followers by repeating the same thing over and over again or by posting irrelevant status updates. Figuring out what to post and how often is not easy. You can spend big bucks to hire a social media guru to guide you, but more than likely, you’re going to have to learn what works through trial and error. »

4. ONLY POST WHAT YOU WANT ANYONE – AND EVERYONE – TO SEE. A rule of thumb, before posting, ask yourself whether you’d want your parents, grandparents, younger sister or brother, teachers, college decision-makers or current/future employers to see it. And on that last point, remember that visual arts college admissions officers, members of your audition committee and/or future employers may be rummaging through social media to learn more about you.
5. ASSUME THAT ANYTHING YOU POST WILL NOT GO AWAY. Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and all the others are moneymaking ventures for their billionaire founders who are constantly looking for new ways to grow their businesses. Remember that privacy issues are common. When you use
social media, your information may be viewed by people you would never have imagined. It may also be stored and shared to grow the business model.
6. REMEMBER THAT SOCIAL MEDIA IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING. Just when you get comfortable with your favorite social media platform, you’ll find that it has changed. That’s the nature of social media. It never stays the same. So you’ve got to find a way to keep up with what really works for you. Social media is all about connecting people and ideas. By keeping your posts authentic and in response to the aspects of your work that followers are most interested in, you’re more likely to build your social media presence in a way that supports your mission as an artist in any field. And by recognizing the limits of social media tools and respecting your own privacy, you’re unlikely to wake up regretting something you posted.
