‘A Christmas Story’ opens Nov. 22 at the Beekay Theatre BY MONICA NADON CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Tehachapi Community Theatre’s production of "A Christmas Story" opens this Friday, Nov. 22, at the beautiful Beekay Theatre. The play, written by Philip Grecian, is based on the well-known movie of the same name, which in turn is based on the memoirs of humorist Jean Shepherd of growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s. The story follows 9-yearold Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder 200-Shot Carbine Action Range Model Air Rifle for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself with the oft repeated response being: "You’ll shoot your eye out." The play closely follows the beloved motion picture including such scenes as the family’s temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the Little Orphan

A focal point of the story is a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg which Ralpie’s father wins in a contest. A replica of the famous lamp was purchased to use as a prop in the play. Drawing tickets may be purchased during the show’s intermissions for a chance to win the lamp after the final performance. This family-friendly play runs the weekend of Thanksgiving, which makes a great outing for family and friends visiting from out of town. Don’t wait, get your tickets early as those performances fill up fast. Performance dates are

Friday and Saturday nights, Nov. 22, 23, 29, 30, Dec. 6, 7, 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees are Dec. 1, 8 and 15 at 2 p.m. Performances are held at the BeeKay Theatre located at 110 S. ‘Festival of Lights’ Hanukkah menorah lighting on Dec. 2 BY ROGER PERLMAN CONTRIBUTING WRITER

A public menorah lighting will take place on the sixth night of Hanukkah, Monday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m, in front of Moses Master Carpet, 110 E. Tehachapi Blvd., opposite the water tower. The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, or the "Feast of Lights," will be celebrated this year beginning the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 27, (which includes the rare 'ThanksChanukahgiving') and continues for eight days through sundown Thursday, Dec. 5th. The public is invited to attend this community lighting event." Refreshments will include Suf-

ganiyot, the deep-fried jelly doughnuts associated with Hanukkah. Lighting this menorah is sponsored by Moses Master Carpet of Tehachapi and Chabad of Bakersfield, with Rabbi Shmuel Schlanger, the Chabad Rabbi of Bakersfield, presiding over the Lighting.

A brief story of Hanukkah Hanukkah commemorates the heroic resistance of the Jewish nation over the vastly superior armies of Antiochus Epiphanes, King of the Seleucid (Greco-Syrian) Empire. The Greeks had invaded the autonomous kingdom of Judea, despoiled and

defiled the Holy Temple of Jerusalem, and attempted to extinguish the Jewish religion. When the Jewish masses rose in indignation, Mattathias, patriarch of the priestly Hasmonai family, aided by his five sons—among whom the famous Judah Maccabee ("the Hammer")—led them to an astonishing and decisive victory. On the 25th day of Kislev the enemy withdrew. The Temple was reconsecrated (Hanukkas haBayis) and the Menorah—the golden seven-branched Temple lamp—was rekindled with the one surviving cruse of holy oil. The miraculous component of the victory was underscored when that

one-day's supply of oil lasted for eight days— until a fresh supply of oil could be prepared! Accordingly, the following year, in commemoration of these miracles, the Sages of the Sanhedrin decreed the 25th day of Kislev to be the commencement of the eightday annual festival of Hanukkah ("Consecration"). Significantly, the word "Hanukkah" can also be translated as "They rested on the 25th!" Understanding the 'Kiddie Tax' Reform Act of 1986 BY JASON ALDERMAN CONTRIBUTING WRITER

For something whose nickname sounds so innocent, the "kiddie tax" certainly can wreak havoc on unprepared taxpayers' yearly returns. Congress first introduced the kiddie tax as part of the Tax Reform Act of 1986 to discourage wealthy parents from sheltering their investment income in accounts under their children's names, thereby avoiding paying taxes on the amounts. The rules have been tweaked periodically ever since. Although the kiddie tax once applied only to the unearned income of children under 14 (hence the nickname), it now impacts

all children under age 19 (as well as full-time students under 24), provided their earned income does not exceed half of the annual expenses for their support. Moreover, the kiddie tax is not just a wealthy person's problem: Any outright gifts parents or grandparents bestow on young children, whether to avoid triggering the gift tax or simply out of generosity, could actually be generate investment earnings that would be subject to the kiddie tax if they exceed a threshold amount. Here's a primer on how the kiddie tax works and whom it impacts: As it does with adults, the IRS differentiates between

income children earn (paper routes, summer jobs, etc.) and unearned investment income they receive such as interest, dividends and capital gains – usually by way of accounts opened in their names by parents. Taxation of the first $1,000 of a child's unearned income is generally offset by the $1,000 standard tax deduction for dependents and thus won't be taxed; the next $1,000 is taxed at the child's own income-tax rate (e.g., it's 10 percent for taxable income up to $8,925). However, all unearned income over $2,000 is taxed at the parent's marginal tax rate, which can be as high as 39.6 percent for married

couples with taxable income over $450,000. There are two ways to report your child's investment income to the IRS: File a separate return for your child using IRS Form 8615; or include it on your own tax return, using IRS Form 8814 – the latter only works if they had no earned income to report. The tax owed will be the same either way. Important note: Although including your children's investment income on your return may be more convenient, doing so could increase your adjusted gross income so much that you become subject to the alternative minimum tax or ineligible for certain income-based

deductions and credits. For example, eligibility for the American Opportunity Tax Credit begins phasing out for individuals whose modified adjusted gross income exceeds $80,000 ($160,000 for married couples). Other kiddie tax rules: • To be considered fulltime students, children must attend school full time during at least five months of the year. • The kiddie tax does not apply to children who: are 19 to 23 and not full-time students; provide more than half of their own support from earned income; are over 24 and still dependents of their parents; or under 24 but married and file a joint tax return. These children are

all taxed like adults at their own tax rate. Remember, gifts themselves are never taxable to the recipient. If a gift generates unearned investment income, however, that's when taxation comes into play. Also, any gifts over $14,000 per individual, per year, will trigger the gift tax – although most of us will never come close to the $5.25 million lifetime gift exemption. For more details on tax filing requirements for children, see IRS Publication 929, "Tax Rules for Children and Dependents.". Jason Alderman directs Visa's financial education programs.
