Coming to Tehachapi: The Polar Express Tehachapi Dance Theatre is excited to present Tehachapi’s premiere of the “The Polar Express,” on Friday, Dec. 13, at 6 p.m. This show is based on the story written by Chris Van Allsburg, The dance/musical is an original adaptation conceived by Kathy Murray, the director of Tehachapi Dance Theatre. More than 100 cast members of all ages and dance levels will perform, bringing the plot magically alive. The

story begins late one Christmas Eve after the town has gone to sleep. Children board a mysterious train and are entertained by “hip hoppin” waiters on their way to the North Pole. Through an eerie forest where wolves and the northern lights illuminate the dark, the children reach their destination. Upon arrival, the children receive a “rockette welcome.” Dancing elves, toymakers, rockin reindeer and crazy candy makers delight

the children with the magic of Christmas. Santa chooses a child to receive the first gift of Christmas, a bell that can only be heard by those who believe in the spirit of Christmas. This performance will be in the Jacobsen Middle School gym. Tickets are $5.00 Available at Tehachapi Dance Theatre, Lee’s House of Music, or The Mix, all located at 20407 Brian Way in Old Town Call for more information 823-0320.

TEHACHAPI NEWS In 1863, during the midst of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that a national day of "Thanksgiving and praise" should be observed on the last Thursday of each November. In a proclamation dated Oct. 3, 1863, Lincoln pronounced that as the year drew to a close, it had been filled with "the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies," and that "It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people." While Lincoln may have made the day official, the idea of Thanksgiving was already something of a 200year-old tradition, dating back to the year after the colonists who crossed the Atlantic on the Mayflower settled at Plymouth Rock. The first year of settlement in the New World had taken a cruel and brutal toll on the 102 settlers who settled the Plymouth Colony in 1620. By the fall of 1621, only 55 of the original colonists had survived, aided by Native Americans who

taught them how to cultivate corn, which grew well in the region. According to historian James Baker, to celebrate the colony's first successful harvest, Governor William Bradford called for a three-day celebration, and invited the local Wampanoag indians, who had been so instrumental in the colony's survival. According to colonist Edward Winslow's journals, Bradford sent for men to hunt fowl for the feast, and the Wampanoag arrived bearing five deer. The rest of the menu most likely consisted of corn and nativeprepared squashes. Two years later, in 1623, Bradford called for another day of religious fasting to celebrate the end of a prolonged drought that had threatened the colony and the practice of having days of "Thanksgiving" became a somewhat common practice. President George Washington, in 1789, proclaimed a single national day of Thanksgiving “... to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all

unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks for his kind care and protection of the people of this country.” Among other things he encouraged the country to celebrate the ratification of the new constitution. In 1817, New York became the first state to recognize an official Thanksgiving holiday, and over the next several years other states followed suit, all choosing differing dates. It took a 36-year campaign by author Sarah Josepha Hale, who also penned “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” to convince President Lincoln to make the day, the last Thursday of November, a national holiday. Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated around the globe, in many forms, but with one common theme. It has become a day of coming together with friends and family, to reflect upon the blessings of the previous year, and celebrate the hopes of the upcoming one, and as Lincoln expressed, a time for the nation to come together “consistent with the Divine purpose, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.”

Serve up ‘A Christmas Story’ for Thanksgiving weekend After filling the tummy’s with turkey and giving thanks, extend the Thanksgiving cheer at the beautiful BeeKay Theater by seeing the heart-warming play, “A Christmas Story.” The play, written by Philip Grecian, is based on the well-known movie of the same name. The story follows 9-year old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder 200-Shot Carbine Action Range Model Air Rifle for Christmas. Directors Heather Ringle and David Reed head up this production with a talented cast of actors. New to the TCT talent pool and the BeeKay stage is Jamie Uhtof, who plays Ralphie’s mother. She is a teacher who recently moved to Tehachapi from the Lancaster/Palmdale area. A few years ago, Ms. Uhtof went to see one of her students perform in a musical and was bitten by the acting bug herself. She has performed in six musicals since 2011. This is her first lead role and her first “straight” play (non-musical).

Four dishes that add up to a no-stress brunch buffet:

The Old Man (Michael Gruett), and Mother (Jamie Uhtof) discover numerous ads for the Red Ryder 200-Shot Carbine Action Range Model Air Rifle in their mail. “This has been a wonderful experience,” said Jamie. “Everyone is very supportive. It’s like a family. It’s a very collaborative effort. I really appreciate that the directors ask my opinion.” This family-friendly play runs the weekend of Thanksgiving, which also makes it great outing for family and friends visiting from out of town. Performance dates are Friday and Saturday nights, November 29, 30, December

6, 7, 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees are December 1, 8 and 15 at 2:00 p.m. The BeeKay Theater is located at 110 S. Green Street. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased on-line at www.tctonstage.com or Picture Perfect-Stamps of Approval, Tehachapi Furniture or Johnny’s Take n’ Bake. For more information please visit TCT’s web-site at www.tctonstage.com or call the TCT message line at 8224037.

Tickets are now available for the Dec. 7 Summit Singers concert. They can be purchased from any Summit Singers member, or from the following businesses: Apple Shed, Books & Crannies, Mountain Music, and Tehachapi Furniture. Kick off your Christmas season with a great night of

music, enjoyable for every age. The program will be at the First Baptist Church, at 1049 South Curry. It will begin at 7:30, which will allow you to enjoy the downtown Christmas parade prior to the concert. The Summit Singers are a local choral group, formed about 14 years ago and open to all singers in the community. The organiza-

tion has received a small grant this year from the Arts Council of Kern, which has assisted in keeping the admission prices at the same low rates enjoyed in years past. • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

• A frittata with the deeply savory flavors of Prosciutto di Parma and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. It's equally delicious warm or at room temperature, whichever is more convenient. • Thumbprint biscuits featuring melted Montasio cheese in the indentations on top - a clever touch for biscuits made with ready-made dough. • Another brilliant two-ingredient recipe consists of eggs baked in Prosciutto di San Daniele "cups." They are crisp, creamy and irresistible. • Festive garnishes for a salad of deep green kale leaves, tossed with orange vinaigrette, include Grana Padano shards, pears and pine nuts. For more information on the PDO system and holiday recipes using these legendary cheeses and hams, visit www.legendsfromeurope.com.

Remove ribs from kale and cut into 1inch ribbons; place in a large salad bowl. Add pear, cheese and nuts. Whisk together orange juice, vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper. Pour over salad and toss.

Montasio Cheese Thumbprint Biscuits Yield: 8 biscuits

• 1 package store bought ready-made biscuit dough • 1 cup coarsely grated Montasio cheese Preheat oven to 400°F. Separate biscuits onto a parchment lined or lightly greased baking sheet. With your thumb, press into center of each biscuit to form a small well. Fill each well with 2 tablespoons of the grated Montasio. Bake until tops are golden, about 8 minutes. Serve immediately.

Eggs Baked in Prosciutto di San Daniele Cups

Prosciutto di Parma and Parmigiano Reggiano Frittata

Yield: 12 portions

• 12 slices Prosciutto di San Daniele • 12 large eggs

Yield: 4 to 6 portions

Preheat oven to 400°F. Fold one slice of Prosciutto di San Daniele in half crosswise to make a rectangle. Fit into a muffin cup. Crack egg into lined cup. Repeat with remaining ham and eggs. Bake 10 to 12 minutes to desired doneness.

• 8 large eggs • 1/2 cup whole milk • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper • 3 ounces thinly sliced Prosciutto di Parma, torn into 1-inch pieces • 6 scallions, thinly sliced • 1/2 cup (2 ounces) coarsely grated Parmigiano Reggiano • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

Kale Salad with Grana Padano and Citrus Dressing

Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, beat eggs and milk with an electric beater until frothy; add pepper. Stir in the Prosciutto di Parma, scallions and cheese. Heat oil in an 8inch oven proof skillet; add egg mixture and cook over medium heat until edges are set, about 8 to 10 minutes. Place in oven and bake until firm, 15 to 20 minutes. Source: Legends from Europe

Yield: 5 cups

• 1/2 pound kale • 1 large Anjou or Bartlett pear, sliced • 1/2 cup Grana Padano cheese shards • 1/4 cup pine nuts or sliced almonds, toasted • 2 tablespoons orange juice • 2 tablespoons white wine or balsamic vinegar

Practical Money Matters

Don't let cyber grinches ruin your holidays BY JASON ALDERMAN CONTRIBUTING WRITER

I'm usually in too much of a Thanksgiving food coma to hit the sales on Black Friday, but millions of other Americans somehow find the energy. Last year, 89 million people took advantage of Black Friday sales (57 million of them online), while an estimated 247 million shopped throughout the four-day weekend, as stores increasingly have opened their doors on Thanksgiving itself. In addition, millions of bargain hunters spent another $2 billion on Cyber Monday, so it's clear that online holiday shopping is here to stay. Unfortunately, cyber criminals have

zeroed in on this trend and are redoubling their efforts to separate shoppers from their hard-earned cash. Whether you're shopping online by computer, smartphone or tablet, here are some common cyber scams to watch out for and security precautions to take: Tips for buying gift cards: • Only buy from secure websites of trusted retailers (look for an "s" in the "https://" web address and a lock symbol). • At walk-in stores, only purchase cards from employees who have them locked up. Avoid cards at unattended display racks, since thieves can scan the card's unique serial number; then, after you've

loaded it with cash, drain its value with online purchases before the recipient has a chance to use it. • Never purchase deeply discounted cards or event tickets from online marketplaces like eBay or Craigslist – chances are good that the cards are counterfeit or were stolen. Most retailers offer holiday sales as a way to boost their year-end bottom line. If you've "liked" a product or store on Facebook or Twitter, or have signed up to receive their emails, you may well get genuine offers for steep discounts or lastminute sales. But beware of bogus offers from sites that mimic those of legitimate retailers.

They could be: • Trying to harvest your credit card number and other personal information to make illegitimate charges to your account or open new accounts in your name. • Attempting to sell you counterfeit or stolen goods. • Trying to gain access to your social media profile to log into other accounts tied to it, or to post illegitimate offers purportedly endorsed by you to lure in your friends. Another common scam is to send an email claiming a courier is trying to deliver a package or there's a problem with your order. You'll be told to click on a link to get details and will likely be asked to reveal account or other personal

information to verify. Unless you previously provided them your email address, this is probably bogus. A few additional holidayrelated security tips: • When shopping online, avoid pop-up ads touting incredible deals. If you think it might be real, log into the retailer's website yourself to see whether the deal is posted. • Hackers create realisticlooking web addresses that, when clicked, take you to a bogus site that can infect your device with malware or install a Trojan Horse program to steal your personal information. To be safe, let your cursor hover over web addresses you didn't type in yourself and

look for misspelled or weird-looking sequences of characters. • Before completing an online order, visit the site's "Contact Us" and "Terms and Conditions" pages for their phone number, mailing address, return policies, etc. Phony sites often either don't have such pages or they're filled with easy-tospot errors. Don't let the prospect of getting a great deal on Black Friday allow you to drop your guard against scammers who would love to fill your stocking with coal.
