Editorial God Bless everyone and welcome to the May Edition of Tekoa Gospel Music News. I know the issue is late.. but I'm just glad that it's here! We have established a format and decided that this magazine will become an "Entertainment Weekly" style magazine for the gospel music industry. This month I am excited to share interviews from the press room as welll as the red carpet from the 43rd Annual Dove Awards. I had a lot of fun, but I was extremely tired. The pushing and shoving was just too much. It got humid very fast and some media outlets were very (hmmmm how can I say this).. Mean.. I did my best to follow the request of the publicists and only ask one quesiton per artist. I want to say a special thank you to Candace Hight of Atlanta Georgia for being the photographer for that day. She was a trooper and we had fun capturing the moments. If you need an event photographer or just a photographer, please look her up on her website at http:// photographybycandace.net. There is alot of good music coming out this summer and we have some of the best CDs here in this issue. We are looking forward to: Shawna Harris, Claude Deuce, Tamela Mann, Cheneta Jones, Regina Belle, Kathy Taylor, and Angela Spivey. just to name a few.
Yes! I am talking about Shawn Bigby! He's is so personable and funny. He's just a real person. I hope you enjoy what he has to say about his journey this far and his plans for the future. Pick up his single "Your Way is Better" on I-Tunes and if you are in the Charlotte area, go experience his ministry at New Llife. It will do you good! Enjoy this issue and keep us in your prayers.

Sean C Johnson and Jekalyn Carr Sean C. Johnson's music is wonderfully smooth, relaxing but at the same time keeps your head bobbing with its neosoul appeal reminiscent of John Legend with God conscious lyrics. The entire CD can be played from the beginning and the titles of the tracks are intriguing enough to keep the first time listener engaged to see how he'll bring God into the picture. For example, he has a bonus track entitled "Oatmeal and Spaghetti" in which he is challenging himself to keep pushing towards his dream. Sean also has a song entitled "Molasses" that admonishes believers to take their time in this walk with God allowing him to work on us in the storm. He tells us to keep walking "slow like molasses" and those of us from the country understand how long it takes the good molasses to emerge from the jar. When it does, it's delicious! My favorite track on the CD is "Who" which is a neo-soul styled anthem that celebrates the diety of our God Jehovah! Another song of note on the project "Pass Me Not", is a new take on an old hymn in which Sean asks God "If you really don't mind never leave my side". The track "Dear Me" is an insightful letter to self that reminds believers that we are nothing without God and that we need him to help us become who he called us to be. Sean keeps it real with the lyrics when he says "I make me sick" and "I know what you're going to say. You want your own way". Sean also provides some hard driving hip hop tracks in "Stop and Think", "MLMX" and "Gonna Be". Sean's music has a relaxing quality that permits reflection, repentance, and thankfulness. Make sure you pick up the new CD "Surrender All: Simply a Vessel Volume 3" by Sean C. Johnson
Fifteen-year-old gospel powerhouse Jekalyn Carr is taking the gospel industry by storm with her dynamic ministry and powerful voice. anita wilson - Worship soul CD Review
by Bianca Woodard
Anita Wilson released her new cd, "Worship Soul" to rave reviews and great anticipation in the gospel community and it was well deserved. Anita's unique singing style, heart wrenching ballads and funky up tempo tunes make her stand out in the midst of all the others. Her voice reminds me of a blend of Lisa Page Brooks, Maurette Brown Clark and Tonya Baker, but make no mistake- Anita has her own style. All of the aforementioned ladies are some of my favorite singers, so this CD is right up my alley. When I listen, I can't help but think- if the pioneer contemporary female gospel group Witness was born in 2012, this is what they would sound like. Anita is unmistakably gospel, fresh, and anointed.
Anita gives us a taste of some gospel funk when we listen to one of my favorite "Jesus Will". This song was on REPEAT in my car for about a week. Complete with modulations, head bobbing musical breaks, and easy lyrics, listeners will enjoy every moment of it. The party doesn't stop either because she brings it back in with a slower reprise of the song at the end. Listeners get the same feeling from "Keep On Praisin" and "He Shows Out". Anita Wilson's CD is well worth the purchase and will become one that is a MUST HAVE for years to come. She's cemented her place in gospel music and did so without a lot of riffs and runs. It can be done! Well done Anita! FIVE MICS!!

encounter this song. This ballad is beautiful and she follows up later in the CD with another ballad, "Perfect Love Song", that is intertwined with some of our favorite worship songs and send you into an intimate place when you listen. You'll find yourself slipping up your hand.

Claude Deuce Independent gospel artist, Claude Deuce, has been gracious to us all for about a year by offering FREE music. First, he put out the "Wanna Be Winans" Mix-tape that made several top pick lists for 2011 and now he's working on an EP for 2012. He's back with a follow up single entitled "Analog" that compares "Analog to living for Christ". Claude is a clever songwriter and displays his songwriting prowess in the lyrics of this song as he has in the past with songs such as "Math" from his "The Young Elder" CD where he compared a relationship with God to what he called "simple math". He Facebooked a date June 12th for the EP release so go right now to Bandcamp to download this latest single by clicking HERE!!! .
Nicois Nicois is a gifted singer-songwriter and it's clear on Un-di-ni-a-bel that she's no novice. During the 11-track project, it's apparent that Nicois is in her element. With the makings of a Top Ten hit, the lead single, "Undeniable" (Track Four), has quickly become Nicois' signature song. Penned by Kurtis Parks, Jemia Ellis and Joel Buckner, the song speaks of the awesomeness of God. With a slight rock edge, "Undeniable" showcases the artist in a moving vocal performance of an outstanding song. Those needing a boost of spiritual energy will find it with "Revive Us" (Track Five) and listeners will be enraptured with the mesmerizing track, "Take Everything" (Track Ten). Reminding us of the eternal love of God, the danceable, electronica feel of "Day One" warms the heart and is a true highlight of the CD.
Patrick Dopson “I’m excited about the upcoming release of my new CD, Open The Heavens,” said Dopson. “With the songs ‘Keep Me’ climbing into Billboard's top 30 and ‘Open The Heavens’ being selected by Maranatha! Music for the Top 25 Gospel Praise & Worship Songs 2012 Edition CD, it's overwhelming to see how God is using the music. It's an eight year vision that has been both trying and rewarding." David and Tamela Mann David Mann hosted the Dove Awards with Chondra Pierce and he did an excellent job. Tamela Mann was absolutely stunning in a cherry red gown at the Dove Awards backstage as she spoke about her experience with Whitney Houston in the upcoming moving "Sparkle" in which she has the role of Whitney's best friend. Tamela also has a CD coming out on June 5th, 2012 entitled "Best Days". Enjoy what Tamela had to say backstage. What do you all enjoy cooking together? Tamela: My favorite dish that I cook for them is Meatloaf David: Meatloaf and her momma's yams Photo By Candace Hight
Tamela went on to tell us that David barbeques at times and she does the side dishes. They are currently shopping their cooking show "Hanging with the Manns" to different networks and they hoped to have a home for it by the end of this year. They stated that they consider cooking an adventure and I'm sure that this will come through on the show. David mentioned a time where Tamela wanted to go to a ranch in 120 degree weather to ride horses and after that they made homemade chilli. They also went to the Bahamas and cooked authentic food while there so their show is not just cooking. They like to have fun. Tamela and David are an awesome couple! The Manns are celebrating 24 years of marriage in 2012 and she showed off her ring and gave relationship advice that basically told the ladies to wait on God to send their husband. David added that one should spend more time getting to know the person and less time planning the wedding.

Can you talk a little bit about your role in Sparkle. Tamela: I am in Sparkle. Hallelujah! It was really really wonderful to work with Whitney. I was really hurt when all that happened. She was such a sweet lady and she really loved the Lord. No joke. All of my scenes are with her as her best friend. It was such a joy and a great experience. It's going to be a great movie and she's going to be singing in the movie. So it is going to be something to see and hear. Be on the look out for the Cooking Show and Tamela's new CD this year! "Let It Go" by TD Jakes - Book Review Bishop TD Jakes’ new book “Let It Go: Forgive So You Can Be Forgiven” is a God send! It reminds us of the power of forgiveness in the life of the believer or just in general. He provides the reader with several golden nuggets to exercise forgiveness so they can be freed up for future endeavors and relationships. Bishop Jakes took his time to open the scriptures for practical application so that the reader can be freed from past hurts from family, church family, work, and any human relationship. He clearly states “If you want to go for it as an eagle, you must let go of the chicken’s perspective”. Bishop Jakes points out that forgiveness “requires daily practice” which is a challenge for most because we tend to relive hurts which can leave to a “cancer in our soul” if we don’t keep it in check. When we forgive we release ourselves for the abundance that God has for us. We can harbor un-forgiveness for years and it develops into a bitter root. We have to learn how to forgive people even in the midst of what they are doing just as Jesus did with the thieves on the cross. What a great example in our savior. God wants us to be free and we should want nothing between our soul and our savior. Bishop Jakes’ “Let It Go” is a must read for every believer no matter the age or denomination. He pours out God’s thoughts on forgiveness and teaches readers how to live free from bondage! The trials that Bishop Trotter faced helped him to make wiser decisions for his life holistically. The father, son, husband and Pastor, Bishop Larry D. Trotter shares more of the public image that was created and shattered in the new book “Living Above See Level”. It is the true story of struggle, stress, success and never losing faith in God and His promises. Bishop Trotter learned some very valuable lessons and wants to provide each reader the tools to live above what they SEE no matter how bad or good the situation seems! “There is no need for you to make the same mistakes that I’ve had to manage” –Bishop Larry Trotter bwoodard@tekoagospelmusicnews.com

Shawn Bigby
Shawn Bigby has a wide smile and a warm heart. He is the worship leader at New Life in Charlotte NC where John P. Kee is Pastor. He is also a recording artist recently named one to watch in the bible for the gospel music industry, The Gospel Round Up. We sat down with Shawn to catch up with what was going on with him and to find out his future endeavors. We’re Facebook friends and I read your updates from time to time. I hear you got some good news from Gospel Round Up. Yes. I was actually put in an article for being one of the top ten artists to look out for in the year 2012 so I am floored and blown away by that whole thing. That was something unexpected. We weren’t even looking for it. Neither Alpheaus nor I knew that it had happened. I woke up and got a couple of tweets on that morning and they were like “hey congratulations on being in gospel roundup”. I was like “uhhhh.. say what?”. We went and checked it out and it’s amazing. It’s just amazing that God is doing such great and crazy things even behind our backs when we don’t even know it. Well Congratulations! That’s some good news. I was thinking “he’s floored right now. I can tell”. When you grow up watching and looking in Gospel Industry Round up, you think “Maybe one day I’ll be able to have a picture or something in here”. To not even expect it at this stage of your life and it happens, it’s just kind of crazy! I owe all praise to God. What I love about it Bianca and I’m going to be really honest and really transparent. I love the fact that a lot of the things that are happening to us as a unit (Music to Change U and Pure N Heart) is stuff that we’re not seeking out. We’re just doing what we do. We just do the ministry. We do that work and opportunities just throw themselves at us. It’s literally God fulfilling the scripture of
Page 18
www.tekoagospelmusicnews.com
you use your gift and I’ll get you in the presence of mighty men. It keeps making room over and over again. So people have given you so many accolades. How does that make you feel that so many artists of this caliber have such great things to say about your ministry? It makes me feel really humble because I have such great respect for those people who actually chime in and give me support. One thing I love about where I am in life is that God has surrounded me with people that I look up to and that I can glean information from. I believe in having a strong support circle. A strong circle that even when I get way out there will say “hey Shawn guess what? You’re way out there. Come on back. You went somewhere you shouldn’t have gone. Come on back and let’s discuss this and get you back on track. ”. Blanche is a sister of mine and when we connected the very first time, we’ve just been connected at the hip. Anytime I’m in Columbia or she’s around we get up and we talk. We talk way past the business so for her to share and express her concern and for her to express her thoughts on the ministry is just huge to me. Darius, another good friend of mine, we actually got robbed on the same night. It was crazy. We were in Atlanta and we went and celebrated at Pappadeux’s that we didn’t get killed. He’s a brother of mine and he’s coming up in the ranks. So I have sincere relationship with people outside of what the music dictates. It’s really easy to mix with people when you have the music in common, but I love the fact that I have relationships with these people and I respect them past the music. I know their families. We get to interact and talk about stuff that’s non music, non industry. We can talk about the game. We talk about life in general and so I just love that and appreciate it. For them to humble themselves and leave a comment and say “your music is relevant”. That is so humbling to me because they don’t have to. Your friends are the ones that you value the most.
bwoodard@tekoagospelmusicnews.com
What do you want the world to know about you Shawn and your ministry? The one thing I want the world to know about me is I love God with all of my heart. I want anytime that you experience my ministry, I want you to experience a real for real relationship with God. Whether that’s in teaching, or in my songs or in my singing, I want you to be able to look and say wow that’s a brother who loves God and is completely sold out… he has an everyday tangible relationship with God and I can do the same thing. I don’t want it to ever seem like I have this monopoly on God like he speaks to me and nobody else. I need you to understand I’m a normal ole cat from Anderson, the home of Radio. I’m just a normal old dude from Anderson South Carolina who just loves Jesus and I just listen to him. He really guides my life and my life is lived by faith. It’s easy for anybody to do. You have a single out called “Your Way is Better. Can you tell us about the song. It’s really a testimonial of the ending of one of the darkest seasons in my life so far. I was dating a young girl and we had been dating for some years. The relationship fell apart and I really thought we were going to get married. I was on the verge of proposing and all that stuff. I believed God to restore the relationship and really believing God to bring that whole thing all the way back around. I was hold on to it and believing. I got to a point where I was reading my word and I was like “God you know at this point whatever you want to do, I’m fine with it”. The bible says in Proverbs a man thinks his life is supposed to go one way but he doesn’t understand that it leads to destruction and I love that scripture. I love that area just because we have these thoughts for our lives where we think that it’s got to go this way or this is the way, but the end of it will lead me to my death. I’m not saying that she was going to kill me or anything but I’m saying that it might have been the best thing for me. Obviously it

Shawn Bigby wasn’t because God didn’t allow it to be so. When we live this surrendered life to Christ, no longer do we get to make the choices or decisions for our lives. It is him who comes alive in us and makes those decisions. I got to a place where I said God your way is better. You know what tomorrow looks like and I’m just dealing with today. That is just awesome to me that he maps out my life years ahead. I can only deal with today and yesterday. I don’t know what tomorrow’s going to bring. I have to rely on someone who has the Photo by designbyfrederickgiles.com insight into what’s going on in my life. That’s where the lyrics came from: I’ll be like “ooo I want that to be on the record” but I haven’t finished my very first record yet You know what’s best for me/When my eyes can’t which has a bunch of songs on it. So I just want to see/ the plan you have for me/ On this one thing record again. We keep going through this process I can agree/ Your way is better and I will trust you of I like this one or this one seems very relevant Lord for now or this one is a great song for this season. Right now, we’re working on that EP Whatever it is you want to do. Whatever it is you want to say. It’s got to be the best way for me. It’s which will have “Your Way is Better” on there. It will have a cover of “How Great Is Our God” on got to be the absolute end all be all. The best there that we do at our church. It will have a decision I can ever make. Just trust you and let couple of other tunes on there and people will be you live your life through me. able to get it really soon. The whole project will When should we expect a complete solo be out next year so I’m really excited and looking project from you? forward to it. The whole project will be done next year. We’ll be releasing an EP this year on some songs that I’ve already recorded. I don’t know if any other writers or singers are like me but I’ve got so many songs that are bits and pieces that sometimes come together so I’ll got to Alphaeus and we’ll start singing and start putting the music together and

How did you get involved with doing praise and worship at New Life with John P Kee? Israel Houghton says this quote and I use it and love it. He said “Life moves at the speed of relationship”. Everything that we ever accomplish or that we do in life often time happens because

of relationship and not just because of your skill or your qualifications. He said some of the best business deals are made on the golf course and not actually in the conference room and I love that thought. It’s my opener in telling you about how I got hooked up at New Life. Miranda and I (Miranda was the praise and worship leader before me) have known each other for years. I met her at an event in Atlanta Georgia about 7 or 8 years ago. I got the chance to hear her before she was even at New Life. We linked up again in Columbia and exchanged phone numbers. She just became my sister and it was one of those things where we had a relationship. I knew she was at New Life but I never said “Miranda hey you need to get me on at New Life”. It was always a thing of how can I encourage you and how could she encourage me. We would get together and hang out or go get something to eat and just talk about life. She got engaged and was going to get married. She was doing her live session. Her husband to be was living in Atlanta and she was in Charlotte so she was going to move to Atlanta. She was doing her live recording session there at New Life and she invited me to come and lead worship. Little did I know she had a plan going. Pastor Kee heard me that night and within the next two weeks he contacted me about coming to lead worship and taking over for Miranda after she left. It all moved along at the speed of the

relationship. That’s how I got linked up with Pastor Kee. Do you play any instruments and if so what? No I wish I did, but I play a mean air guitar. When I tell you I’m a beast on that air guitar! I do know theory. I studied it in college. It’s funny. Just being at New Life, my ear has opened back up as far as my theory capacity is concerned. I know how to communicate what I want to the musicians, but as far as me sitting down and playing something- it never goes that way. How important is it that artists remain connected and accountable to a local ministry? That ‘s really important because we go and we give out. The bible is very clear when it talks about lineage or legacy. In the Old Testament, you couldn’t go before certain groups of people without having someone who represented or went before you. They might not have been related to you, but they knew the God that you served. Often times they would say “we serve the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”. Not that they had so close of a relationship with God, but they knew Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. That established a legacy. If you don’t have so kind of connection to a covering, as far as a local assembly is concerned, how do we know that you’re being taught. How do we know that you have some kind of relationship? I believe that everyone has to fall under the authority of somebody. We have a whole bunch of people out her just doing what they want to do and have no authority. I believe that’s how a lot of people get jacked up or doing all kinds of crazy stuff as far as the industry is concerned. They don’t have any sort of spiritual authority. There’s no one pouring into them. There’s no one holding them accountable. There’s no one to pull them

Shawn Bigby Who are some of your favorite singers right now Oh that’s an extensive list. At the top of that list is Kim Burrell. She’s just prolific to me. Jason Nelson who is a good friend of mine and someone that I kind of pattern myself after vocally… Fred Hammond, Pastor Kee. I’m a huge John P. Kee fan! When I tell you every Sunday is like Fan boy Sunday for me. When he comes out, it’s kinda of like he’s here again… it’s him. I’m a huge John P Kee fan.

I am a huge fan too. I was in heaven at the Choir Fest during Stellar Award weekend. I felt like I was 19 again when you all were singing “Clap Your Hands”. I would pay you to take me to a concert if he was near when I was in college. His music changed my life. The first song I ever did in church that I actually enjoyed was “He’ll Welcome Me”. It was one of the first songs I sang in church that I didn’t think was so corny and I was like who is this guy? I began to look up the music and he literally changed the game throughout the 80’s and 90’s. I think he is one of the most underrated vocalists out there to be honest with you. I don’t he ever really gets the props that he deserves. Well he gets them from me. I love John P. Kee and when I was in college I backslid, but I would get up every morning and listen to John P. Kee’s “Wait on Him” tape. One morning “He Will Never Leave You Alone” came on and I was like “I can’t live like this anymore”, but this is your interview. Donnie McClurkin is another one of my favorites. The integrity and the amount of integrity Donnie McClurkin has off the stage is off the charts and I fell in love

Featured guests on the project include The First Lady of Praise and Worship and President of the COGIC International Music Department Dr. Judith McAllister who wrote and provides lead vocals on "Arise", a vibrant anthem the choir delivers with a melodious thundering sound of triumph. Chicago’s Evangelist Lemmie Battles offers her signature energetic delivery on the churchy, foot stomping song "Victory". The project musically reflects the diversity of The Mount’s ministry by incorporating traditional gospel, contemporary worship, acapella choral arrangements, jazz-flavored tunes and stand out songs by Awardwinning Contemporary Christian songwriter Tifani Wilson who penned “Praise Awaits” and the sweet worship ballad “Most Holy Lord”. Minister Earl Bynum also provided his songwriting talents on the project and takes the vocal lead on the choir's first radio single “Bless The Name Of The Lord”, which is being added immediately into radio rotations. "This song is an anthem that will resonate in churches and with believers across the country,” states Gerard Bonner, Program Director - Bonnerfide Radio. “Earl Bynum and The Mount Unity Choir have a hit on their hands!"

Congratulations on your new CD and nominiation. Where do you get your inspiration? I get my inspiration from bible stories. I read the scriptures and I see the reality in them. It inspires me because God is using people that are messed up and he takes them and makes a masterpiece out of them. I read those things and I go to him in prayer. I'm encouraged to know that the same God that did that then can do it today.
Ruben Studdard Ruben was present for the Dove Awards this year. He was nominated for a project entitled "Medicine: Live At The Black Academy of Arts & Letters and he was a performer for the evening with the American Idol crew. We had the opportunity to speak to him on the red carpet Do you happen to have a gospel album in the pipeline? I have one already it's called "I Need an Angel". Do you plan on doing another one? Hopefully in the next couple of years I'll do another one. Well I wish Ruben would hurry up and do one. He's a talented brother.

Inspired People and EMI/Christian Music Group recently signed an exclusive worldwide distribution agreement. Jenkins, the senior pastor of the legendary Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, continues a long musical tradition at Fellowship, which released 25 albums under the leadership of Jenkins’ predecessor, Reverend Clay Evans. Jenkins believes that music can be the basis of an urban Christian movement that attracts people in ways that many traditional mediums cannot. “There are opportunities to create amazing music and to create a meaningful movement around that music,” he says. “For us, this is not just a CD; it is a movement for God.”
