A garden hedge with a contemporary twist makes a versatile party design.

The hedge of myrtle, exposed Aquatubes, curving Glitter Stems, and striking color scheme all contribute to a distinctive composition that would make a fabulous buffettable or other party design.

1. Fill the Urban Earth container with Aquafoam, ensuring that the foam comes right to the inner edge.

Insert stems of myrtle to create a solid square hedge. For this type of design, make sure all stems are placed straight down in the foam.

2. Trim any excess myrtle from the hedge. Add Glitter Stems to the base and wind them up the entire hedge, attaching them to myrtle stems at the top with a simple bend in the wired stem.

3. Cut roses about nine inches long and insert them into crystal Aquatubes. Insert the tubed roses inside the Glitter Stems.

4. Complete the design by adding a border of carnations around the entire hedge.

While chrysanthemums are often associated with fall (they are the birth flower for the month of November), cut mums are available year-round and come in such a wide range of colors—including spring pastels and summer brights—that they can no longer be considered a seasonal flower.

Cultivated in China since the 15th century B.C.E., chrysanthemums have a particular cultural resonance in the Far East, where they are thought to symbolize happiness, nobility, love and longevity. The flowers are used to flavor wine and to make a sweet medicinal tea, rich in minerals and with antibacterial properties, useful in fighting infections. The leaves can be steamed or boiled for eating. (We don’t suggest, however, that you recommend this to your customers, unless your chrysanthemums are grown organically.)

While Proflora 2015 was originally scheduled for Medellin, at the center of Colombia’s secondlargest flower-growing area, the event has been moved back to the Corferias convention center in Bogotá, where it has enjoyed success for so many years. The location places the show within reach of the many flower farms located in the surrounding savannah—and as in the past, the show itself will be preceded by flower farm visits for international buyers.

How to wire and tape the stems of gerbera daisies This technique is not recommended as a way to prevent or correct “bent neck” syndrome in gerberas. But sometimes healthy gerberas come in with the flower heads tilting on top of the stem, so that they look like they’re wilting, even though they’re not. Also, wiring and taping correctly allows you to create an airy arrangement with the flowers facing just the way you want them to.

1. Use a short piece of wire, just enough to control the crooked part of the stem.

You don’t want the tape to go below the water level, or the wet tape may come loose. Lay the wire next to the stem and insert it into the calyx, just barely piercing it.

Don’t wrap the wire around the stem, or it will leave spiral marks. Next, choose floral tape in whatever color best matches the natural stem.

To begin taping, wrap the tape around the very top of the stem, pull tight, and start slowly twirling the stem. Spiral the tape down, holding it very taut and overlapping the edges. If you do this carefully you won’t see the edges of the tape. Be sure to stretch it evenly: stretching changes the color, making it a lighter green, and you want the color to be even.

2. At the bottom, where your tape ends, press it with your thumb to finish it off so it won’t unravel easily. b

From prairie girl to fairy princess, lisianthus steps up.

I

t wasn’t that long ago that lisianthus was practically a country bumpkin: a wildflower with a single row of petals opening into a wide trumpet, accompanied by a slender bud—pretty enough on the prairie, but hardly a candidate for the parlor or boudoir. OK, it was 30 years ago that lisianthus was first introduced to the cutflower market—but in flower time, it’s still a newcomer.

How quickly the arriviste has gained sophistication, all the while retaining a certain country charm! Today’s double and quadruple lisianthus look more than ever like roses, but last longer and offer great value, since the individual stems are much less expensive than roses and typically bear two or three flowers each.

Production of lisianthus has expanded dramatically in recent years, thanks in good part to the introduction of new cultivars, especially from Japanese breeders. The result is not just that lisianthus comes in new colors and flower forms, but also that seasonal availability is extended.

BUDS AND BLOOMS The pointed, light green buds of lisianthus give the flower considerable charm and a “garden” feel that has never been more in vogue. Featured here is Corelli Light Pink, in the double-flowered Corelli series from Japanese breeder Takii Seed, distinguished by large, firm petals with a very good shelf life. Also available in the series are Corelli Blue (really a deep purple) and Corelli Apricot.

ETERNAL SUMMER In nature, lisianthus is a summer flower that loves light and warmth— which is why, for example, lisianthus from Sun Valley Floral Farms thrives in hoop houses at the company’s Southern California location in Oxnard. In the past, the peak season for lisianthus (primarily from California) was limited to April or May through October or November. Off-season lisianthus was available from Holland or Israel, but in limited quantities and at a higher price.

With the flower’s rising popularity, however, it makes sense for growers to invest in providing it year-round. “Lisianthus is a crop with potential that hasn’t been unlocked because of its seasonality,” says Ralph DeBoer of Ontario grower Rosa Flora—which inaugurated year-round production of lisianthus in March 2015. “A lot of our customers have standing orders and respond well to an offering that’s available 12 months of the year.”

To succeed in the bridal market—a natural for lisianthus, with its blush colors and romantic look—it helps when a florist can tell a customer, “This flower is available year-round.”

“In the past lisianthus was very much a summer crop,” Ralph continues. “But at Rosa Flora all of our cut-flower programs use supplemental lighting—and now breeders have come up with lisianthus varieties for every season.”

Refinements in greenhouse technique are also providing more consistent lisianthus quality than in the past, says Ralph: “Lisianthus responds well to things like different night and daytime temperature control. It has very precise fertilization requirements. As a grower, there are some tricks to learn, and we’ve definitely made significant advances.”

High-quality winter lisianthus is now available also from Japan. Japanese growers ship lisianthus to North American markets year-round, but the peak season is November through June. As with many other Japanese exports, lisianthus from Japan is on the expensive side, but the vase life is exceptional, and the varieties are distinctive, with profuse, wavy petals and subtle, high-fashion hues.

MORE AND BETTER Following a disastrous fire last summer, some of the greenhouses at Rosa Flora had to be rebuilt.

That’s when the Canadian growers, who supply wholesale florists all over the Northeast, saw an opportunity to expand their lisianthus program. “We doubled the square footage and made some custom adjustments to the greenhouse structure,” says Rosa Flora’s Arielle DeBoer. “The most exciting part is, we can now offer greenhouse-grown lisianthus year-round.”

Cut flowers from Rosa Flora are delivered in buckets, continuously hydrated, to the wholesaler—and while any flower can benefit from that treatment, it’s especially helpful to lisianthus, since the geotropic stems can bend upward if they are shipped horizontal in a box. Among the characteristics touted for Rosa Flora lisianthus are impressive stem length (30 inches is typical) and a vase life of 10 to 14 days. www.rosaflora.com

COLORS AND CARE TIPS Lisianthus comes in a range of blush and pastel colors—white, cream, pink, peach, and lavender—but also in a rich purple, the most popular color with Sun Valley customers. Bicolors are also available. Stem lengths of two feet are common but can reach up to 30 inches and more.

A typical vase life is 10 to 14 days. Note that lisianthus are vulnerable to botrytis mold and to premature wilting from exposure to ethylene gas; the usual measures against these threats are in order. To discourage botrytis, flowers should not be crowded in a bucket.

They should also be stored in buckets tall enough to support the stems upright, as they are geotropic and will bend upward again if allowed to tilt. b BOUTIQUE QUALITY Fat, petal-rich blooms on sturdy stems are standard for the lisianthus varieties grown in Japan and exported year-round, but with peak supply November through June. At Tosakami Tokusan Center, a farm in the Kochi flower-growing area of Japan, grower Isao Shimanouchi aims for the bridal market, carefully pruning away inferior buds that might take energy away from the final product: a perfectly balanced stem with at least two flowers open at the same time and a bud that will also open.

Foliage must be likewise exemplary and unblemished. Like Russian-cut roses from Ecuador, these lisianthus develop slowly and are left on the plant a little longer than others—typically five months from planting to harvest, versus three months from other sources. Even though they are cut at a relatively open stage, the petals are still strong enough to resist damage during shipping. White and cream are always popular (as seen at center left in buckets of freshly harvested lisianthus)—but some of Tosakami Tokusan Center’s newest, experimental varieties include a deep wine color (close to Pantone’s Marsala), a light green with purple edges, and a distinctive shade of peachy coral. red hot What says “party time� better than accents of shiny red? Here, the sparkle heats up an already sizzling,

ton-sur-ton palette of red and hot pink, with touches of deep lavender. Massed flowers, set off with energetic lines, stand out all the better elevated on clear glass containers accented with jewels. To create the design at left, Gerry panglued three upright bricks of floral foam (while they were still dry) to three six-inch, clear plastic Lomey Designer Dishes. He soaked the foam, wrapped wide diamond ribbon around the center of each brick, and added flowers to the top and bottom. Then he secured a second Lomey dish with UGlu to each of the three tall glass rectangles, so that the glass and the flowered tops could be transported separately. On site, the top Lomey dish is nestled into the lower one, which cups it securely.

The glittered rods are secured to the foam with greening pins, to the glass with UGlu (place a small piece of clear adhesive tape on the glass first).

HANG IT UP A succulent rosette in a hanging terrarium makes an attractive gift all by itself—but here the presentation adds so much more, with flax rosettes filling additional terrariums and tucked into the design below. Dahlias on one side are nicely balanced with pincushions on the other; with red hypericum on the dahlia side, the design will remain attractive even when the dahlias, first to fade, are removed. More succulents, brunia, and plucked sunflowers add long-lasting texture.

DO THE TWIST Above, wired wool, twisted together with green decorative wire, adds a bold dash of magenta fuzz to an already bold combination of flowers and foliage: pink Ballet and orange Tropical Amazone roses, plus brilliant chartreuse hypericum, criss-crossed with orbiting loops of lily grass.

BOUQUETS TO GO In their color and form and their resemblance to natural tulip foliage, variegated flax leaves make the perfect accent for elegant, long-stemmed Maureen tulips in a footed glass bowl. The tulips and flax rise up from a rectangle of floral foam, which is wrapped in more flax leaves and nestles in a base of gold crushed glass. Surrounding the stand of tulips are little hand-tied bouquets of white spray roses, brunia, and looped lily grass, each with a stem bundle banded with gold flat wire—which, if this is a party design or centerpiece, could be takeaway gifts for guests.

MORE FOR THE MONEY While red ti leaves might be a little more expensive than ordinary foliage, in the design at upper right they offer cost-effective value both as an accent and as an intriguing material in their own right. Roses and lisianthus blooms, grouped for impact, can be expected to last longer than otherwise because of their short stems.

The long-lasting ornamental kale harmonizes nicely with its surrounding frame of ti leaves. Gilded salal adds a subtle richness to the palette.

SHORT AND STYLISH Anthuriums, succulents, spray mums, and Green Trick are all exceptionally hardy materials.

Add lotus pods sprayed light green and a loop of braided lily grass, and you have a long-lasting, affordable design with plenty of premium style. Taped wire inside the lily-grass braid creates an armature firm enough to support the two longest tulip anthuriums, which are secured to the braid with UGlu. 52 www.flowersandmagazine.com

THEME WITH VARIATIONS At left, a versatile concept that can be taught to a beginning designer and used to rescue flowers with stems broken near the top. The Lid vase (a flipped terrarium lid, deliberately designed to double as an intriguing small vase) elevates the design and creates its own interest. Here it’s filled with a cylinder of foam, wrapped with a striped calathea leaf. A vertical axis is established with equisetum (flax leaves or other verticals could be substituted) and the base filled in with pincushions and hypericum; any compatible flowers and filler would do nicely.

GILDED CRESCENT The graceful curve at the center of the design at right was made by allowing foam to rise above the lip of the container and inserting calla blooms on one side, calla stems on the other, with elegant white lilies and gilded foliage in the center. Flax leaves are bent and secured to each other at the top with UGlu to form arches; gilded ruscus, monstera and salal leaves lend a subtle gleam.

BUNDLED UP Adding flowers in monofloral bundles makes for efficient use of labor time, but also creates pleasing effects, especially with tulips, which have a tendency to turn in the same direction after they are placed in the design. Here, hydrangea was added first to the bed of pink crushed glass, to help control later placements, then the flower bundles, banded with flat wire in strong pink. Calla bundles cross over each other; loops of midollino arch over all.

THE WALL A backdrop of trimmed and tiered flax leaves lends drama and volume to the peach gerberas that pop out against it, rising from a bed of fluffy white ornamental kale, rolled ti leaves, Green Trick, and green spray mums.

The ceramic planter, with its square shape, rounded edges, and light green color, makes a perfect match.

UP AND AROUND Clever foliage treatments add artistry and craftsmanship to a study in blue and orange: The fronds on a tall stem of cycas palm are looped, gathered, and cinched to the stem with purple orchid clips, creating tiered, heart-shaped leaf clusters.
