THE PEASANT FARMER
The performance of the adaptation of JeanBaptiste Poquelin (aka Molière)'s comedy 'L'Avare, ou 'L'École du Mensonge' (The Miser, or the School for Lies) went down successfully at the CASIK-Kenya supported performance space at Kisumu's Dunga Hill Camp yesterday
On the commemoration of Molière's 400th birthday for the whole of 2022, the Alliance Française Nairobi commissioned the rendition of The Miser, localised as 'Mstinji', a Sheng equivalent to the French and English Title. First performed in 1668, the Kisumu show was the next of a series of performances that have so far been done In Nairobi and Nakuru, and should be on the road to the Coast.
ADAPTATION
Nothing brought home the relevance of the play to the audience than the adaptation of the script to the general realities and experiences of the Kenyan audience. It successfully blended in political, social and economical events of Kenya's recent past, skillfully weaving these in without losing Molière's intrinsic comedy. Those who have read/watched 'Minister Karibu' and/or 'Role Play' by John Sibi-Okumu wsuspect that this adaptation must have been the TOR/SOW of his being taken in as a 'Production Consultant' in this project. Hii ni mkono yake kabisa! Done well.
DIRECTION AND ACTING
Nothing is as challenging for actors as performing on a space that is mostly native for open-air concerts, acrobatics and dance etc. This wasn't a stage designed for 'stage plays' and the audience was mixed, including a large group of revellers whose primary entertainment is the nursing of frothy things to the background/foreground of live band music.
The actors therefore did absolutely well to perform in such an atmosphere I should congratulate the calm team (Dave Otieno and Jagpal Sandhu maybe?) for rigging the sound system to capture and convey actors voices.
The experiment did work, and the actors ought to be given a thumbs up for their efforts. I have tried to share action photos (taken by my amateur self) to communicate the cast in action. Enjoy and kudos to the actors Cast including Sam Psenjen, Sandra Wambui, Dadson Gakenga, Suzanne Karani, Kelvin Jeff and others.
The problem I think with most hype is to increase expectations and nearly eliminate the expectation of failure in a production. The hype in this play was based on some kind of experience of 'Sarafina' and 'I will marry when I want' productions.
The directing of 'Mstinji' seemed to still struggle in the director's challenge of overcoming a few of the following: acting in a line (msururu wa waigizaji), temporary loss of character when one has no lines to say essentially not building into actors the collective and continuous responsibility to be aware and conscious that any time they are on stage they contribute to the reality/credibility of colleague actors actions/words, and infusing effective stage business to enable continuity. The director seemed to have tried to overcome this through type-casting, which only could provider so much cover.
OTHER INTERESTING MANENOS
1. The postcolonial competition by the major/dominant colonisers of Africa (France and Britain) was cunningly evident in the play - at some point there is the suggestion that Molière was a greater artist than Shakespeare. The disgust in articulating that British writer was an occasion for laughter But look, how come this was being fought by natives, acting in their own land? These wars will never end! (I wonder if the British Council will just rudisha mkono and sponsor a George Benard Shaw play in revenge )
2. I think the inclusion of local actor Asante Kwach Rading (I think in Nakuru they brought in Barbushe Maina Joseph) as guest starring is an interesting experiment at improvisation. It has its tricky moments, and Kwach did well to gel in.
3. Overall production (wardrobe, props, lighting) was great.
4. The challenge provided here is: to what extent can Kenyan embassies support Kenyan plays to be run in the cities and capitals of France? England? Msumbiji? Peru?
Overall great performance and an evening well spent.
