A REVIEW OF I AM FROM

" Have you ever thought of your roots? Do you embrace your culture, heritage and ancestry?/ Are you on a road to discover where you are from? Well, a man has

I am From , a poem by Teddy Warria is a pleasingly fascinating composition of a young man's journey in appreciating Africanacity, culture and relations. This a journey from the Estates of Buruburu, to cities like Kisumu, countries like South Africa and The USA.

The language blending and grasp is excellent ,spiced harmoniously with Dholuo dialect.

I am From not only brings a vivid lineage of the Warria family but also the historical journey and settlement of the Luo speaking people of East Africa into Got Ramogi.

The cultural heritage is well displayed as he appreciates the music, the food and the ways of the Luo community Being a son of the soil, Wuod Luo , he celebrates musical legends like D.O Misiani's Benga prowess. The ilk of Suzanna Owiyo, Geoffrey Oriema and Ayub Ogada of the famous Koth Biro, meaning, the rain is coming.

The author, Teddy, has rubbed shoulders with big names in the world and gets to appreciate each of their contributions to his journey where notably, in great admiration, not one is more superior to the other

I am From tells of the author's several achievements in relation to making his homeland a better place. As in Earth's Call; Africa's Call; Humanity's Call etcetera

The book is highly recommended for all readers and would especially speak to one who seeks their identity and in for mentorship.

Take a bold step to knowing who you are, just like the African Warrior. Teddy Warria.

The peasant farmer

A decade and a half ago, an upcoming artist won a festival and with it, got his break - which break he boldly grabbed, nurtured, exploited - and is today a central part of Kenya’s popular art.

Eric Omondi does his thing today, in his style and for his admittedly sizeable catchment - in-country and abroad. That break 15yrs ago was courtesy of the creative work of Yours Truly…that’s why whenever you and your children read my IN THE LAND OF THE KITCHEN, you will always find the nexus that connects the two of us.

It is still fresh in mind that excited voice that called me to say, ‘nimeshinda storytelling na ‘Land of the Kitchen…!’

Today? Today I art chini ya maji moving spaces discreetly as I watch the Omondis rule their roost.

I’ve always thought I’ll get to adapt to the Kisumu weather, it never gets easy early in the year, and as a starter pack: a pair of sunglasses, a vest, a pair of shorts, some nice Birkenstock open sandals, a bottle of water and some sunscreen-is all you need cause it gets hot.

My first acquaintance with Kisumu was probably some few years back and I was introduced to “Mama Hassan”-the Holy Grail. We could grab a couple of plates of bhajias and pilau before heading to the united mall to admire the window displays Much has not changed just a little addition of spots to my wanderlist.

Long live the culture! Three of my friends and I ,”club four” as we always pride ourselves, never fail an adventure therapy and specifically a cityscape in the blue city. We’ve always fancied West End Mallthe Masai market in its environs, the Java-Henny wing, the marble-like floors and the fountain. Mega Plaza has always been like a Kisumu lighthouse to us with partial views of the lake and the port, you can’t miss the ecstatic general view of the city from its huge windows. Hats off to the city’s streets because the heights of cleanliness are way up in scale. An additional KFC would ease that buying traffic which is sometimes hectic.

Do you get pissed when the weather changes abruptly and what you’re wearing turns to a living hell? That’s Maseno weather in a nutshell, guess that’s the equator life!

In my new reality, Maseno is fairly cool and most of all is the landscape. ‘The New Zen,’ what I like to call it-a quiet and serene environment with tall grasses and tall-texturized trees next to the Kisumu-Busia highway. It is part of VET Farm and extends up to KEFRI Maseno and a gem for meditations, soul searching and reflecting. In my opinion, it’d make a nice yoga place but the fencing which is accessible to all makes security a real concern.

POST FROM

Benji’s restaurant few meters down the Maseno market off-road serves a range of platters for your tummy cravings from snacks to full-course meals. Décored with soft lights and nice interior to royal the customers, it’s no doubt a nice spot to chill, have a burger, do a class assignment or personal projects or just listen to some Lamu Night by Octopizzo.

“Good thing about Maseno is - there’s a mosque” Abdi says delightfully and adds that even though not big in size, it holds and water runs freely. The accommodation of various people from his origin in the streets of Kisumu in spaces of trade and worship and even recreation is something Abdi appreciates because somebody can relate to his needs.

When you take a look at the Luo people today, you’d not believe their history. It is one of greatness and adventure but of course, like many other tribes of east Africa, they came from faraway lands to occupy the lands they call home today, this means that they carried with them a culture that had survived for thousands of years, however, these conquests would not be possible without a leadership structure and at the heart of it all was a powerful military and the Onagi nation as they were called, had an elaborate army with sophisticated war equipment.

One gear that stood out was the warrior’s shield called Okumba. This shield was fairly large and wide and had an almost 3d perspective. It was designed in such a way that the holder of the shield could cover themselves on the front and sides as well. This was because the shield, oval in shape, had seemingly been carefully folded in half to give it the triangular shape when viewed from the sides.

THE MYSTERY OF LUO SHIELDS.

This aerodynamic design meant that they could attack with speed unlike other tribal shields that were flat in design These shields were made from various hides like hippopotamus skin or buffalo skin which made them impenetrable. The most iconic and noticeable features of all Luo shields were the symbolism and the art on their front cover. Each shield somehow did bear an engraved and painted geometric pattern print that made it unique to its owner.

Careful observation would also reveal that the shield's design made it possible for the warriors to carry them on bulls' backs, thus easy transportation of the warrior to the battlefield. It still remains a mystery what the symbols on the Luo shields mean and that area of study is a black hole since there seems nobody alive today to explain this genius masterpiece war device, This is evident in the fact that in a recent funeral attended by the Luo political leader Raila Amollo Odinga and other Luo spiritual leaders, there were seen elders carrying shields that were definitely not from the Luo tribe but from the Maasai people, this fall from grace and glory is the reason why the question of the true Luo identity needs to be answered rather than ignored.

If you have any information about these Luo shields kindly get in touch or simply start a conversation about them on the Tembea Kisumu page on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, and let's share knowledge about it.

AKINYI AWORA

My fellow women and all those who believe in the power of dreams, today I want to speak to you about a remarkable woman who embodies the spirit of never giving up on your dreams. Her name is Akinyi Awora.

Akinyi's commitment to growth and her belief in the power of continuous improvement to drive development solutions, such as the stellar Ted X Kisumu coming up in August 2023 is truly inspiring. She is a relentless advocate for equality and her life's work is dedicated to designing solutions that disrupt the way we think about development. She has made it her mission to organize young people to be the deciding difference in creating smart and sustainable development, and her work has been recognized globally, earning her several prestigious awards and titles.

As a design thinking consultant, Akinyi has helped businesses, civil societies, and public servants design products and programs built for impact. She is a Mandela Washington Fellow, an Ashoka Young Changemaker, and an Africa Youth for SDGs Champion, just to name a few of her many accomplishments. Her work with women in driving economic development is especially commendable, and it's no surprise that she has earned the Women of Heart Golden Award from the Women of Heart Foundation in London, UK.

But what truly sets Akinyi apart is her philosophy of "Lead with Love." Her unwavering commitment to infusing every solution with the inherent belief that all human beings deserve to live with dignity above all else is the driving force behind her campaign to end poverty. She is a true force to be reckoned with, a leader who inspires others to follow in her footsteps and make a positive impact in the world.

So, my dear sisters, let us take inspiration from Akinyi's example and never give up on our dreams. Let us commit ourselves to growth, continuous improvement, and designing solutions that disrupt the status quo. Let us lead with love, and let us never forget that our dreams are valid. Thank you.

Africa should cherish her ‘Fertile’ Daughter!

I write this as a son of Africa, probably not known to him. If I must introduce myself; my mother’s hut is positioned to the East touching the tears of the skies. The house of Pride, bordering the house of Pearl, and just like any household, we have our share of good and bad tidings.

Africa my father has taught me to talk in black and white and also colour my speech, and as of today, I will have to be more poetic lest I risk my patrimony as the son of the soil.

This great land has lost its maidenhood, having been ploughed by the greedy neighbours who tented as visitors and relatives but we must rush and beg our mothers go against odd and let the daughters lead this orison to regain fertility of the land.

Traditionally speaking that is an interdict, assuming am being poetic, which river will you rather wade?

Women are considered the eye between God and man, therefore men must fetch ‘wood’ since this ladder is of essence to elevate women to mend wrecked walls of Africa. It is godly to say that a woman was made as a helper, the state of traditional discomfiture has made it uneasy to ask for help!

I write this letter imploring clan of men that we need to seed more of the ‘fertile’ daughters to decode the inheritance of the 54 children. We must be proud of the ‘fertile’ daughter of Africa for her to help us out in addressing myriad challenges we are facing. Time to seed and read of her story!

Grace Monica Akech Onyango, also known as Nya'Bungu. Born in 1924, Nya'Bungu broke down cultural barriers and shattered the glass ceiling in Kenyan politics. She made history as the first woman to climb the ranks of the political system, becoming the first Kenyan female mayor in 1965. She also became the first female member of Parliament in post-independence Kenya, representing Kisumu Town Constituency in 1969.

But her achievements didn't stop there. In Parliament, she was the first woman to sit on the speaker's chair as a temporary deputy speaker, serving as Deputy Speaker from 1979 to 1984. Her legacy lives on as an inspiration to women all over the world. Nya'Bungu, we celebrate you and the trailblazing path you paved for generations to come. The Kisumu County Government and Hon. Dr. Amina Mohammed rightly honored Mama Grace Onyango by having the Kisumu social center named after her. A powerful first of many women who weren't afraid to counter and challenge stereotypes. In a world that often fails to recognize the contributions of women, Nya'Bungu stood tall as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Her unwavering commitment to breaking down cultural barriers and shattering the glass ceiling in Kenyan politics was truly remarkable.

As we mourn her passing, let us also celebrate the life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind. May her trailblazing spirit continue to inspire generations to come, and may her memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved her.

BODA BODA BAN

A call to the importance of public participation.

The recent call to ban boda bodas has raised concerns about the importance of public participation in decision-making processes. As a resident of Milimani, I spoke with several boda boda operators in the area and was surprised to learn that most of them were unaware of the ban.

It is crucial to consider the possible consequences of the ban and explore alternative solutions through dialogue The hospitality sector in Milimani has a significant impact on the economy, with numerous independent family-run establishments contributing to the government's revenue through various permits and licenses. These establishments also inject foreign capital into the local economy, and many of them rely on boda bodas to transport their guests to other recreational and entertainment facilities in Kisumu.

While the county government has good intentions to replace boda bodas with online ride-hailing services, it is essential to assess whether this model is feasible. Currently, there are only a few ridehailing services operating in Kisumu that one would confidently recommend to family and friends. Additionally, the ride-hailing model may not fit the needs of boda bodas, as it requires significant investment in intangible assets that may not yield returns

Moreover, boda bodas typically have a daily quota to meet to pay for their motorcycles, and they may not be willing to give away 15% of their gross to an online company for a service that they can handle through good positioning. Positioning away from customer base may also result in increased fuel costs for boda bodas, which could be passed on to the user, ultimately impacting the hospitality sector's growth.

If the ban is deemed necessary, it is crucial to enhance non-motorized transportation facilities such as footpaths and pedestrian crossings. For instance, Awuor Otieno Rd, which has the highest foot traffic in Milimani, lacks a footpath, and some hedges and bushes are overgrown providing good hiding spots for potential criminals. Addressing such issues can contribute to improving security within and outside Milimani.

It is vital to engage all stakeholders in a constructive dialogue to find a sustainable solution that benefits everyone in the community Security remains an issue within and outside Milimani, coordinated efforts are needed to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all residents within Kisumu County #KisumuMyPride
