Carl Caylor “Artistic Portraiture, Monday, May 4, 2:00pm - 5:00pm
"If beauty was only skin-deep, every photograph would reveal the same personality. We create portraits. An artistic expression that goes past the outer layer, beyond first impressions, and into the abyss of one's defining essence." - Carl Caylor Carl is a Kodak Mentor and has been involved with photography for over 25 years. He started his photographic career in the darkroom as a custom printer and technician. He is PPA Certified, a Master Photographer, a Craftsman with Professional Photographers of America and an International Judge. He has won numerous national awards for his photography, including 18 PPA Loan Collections and several Kodak Gallery and Fuji Masterpiece Awards. Having begun his teaching career in 1996, Carl has gained national credibility and is now a favorite instructor at photographic seminars and schools world wide. Carl prides himself on giving a program that contains useful information rather than just a "show and tell" session. You will be inspired. You will be reminded of things you already know. Most importantly, you will learn new, useful ideas that will make you a better artist and a more salable photographer. Carl is a natural light photographer. In this program you will learn how he finds light and how he paints with the light to match the expression and emotion of the subject. He will share insights of the psychology of a photograph. He will show the importance of color harmony, contrast, print quality, print presentation and composition. Carl will take you on a journey to find and use new backgrounds that will help create depth in your images. Finally, Carl will help define why one image is more powerful than another. The way we all see an image and perceive the elements within an image will create interest and power. This is important not only for how we as artists see our work, but more so in how our viewing audience will comprehend our work. Carl will explain what viewers see in images and how we can use that information to create more powerful, salable portraits. The program is heavy towards the Senior market... but don't be fooled: This information will work in all aspects of photography.
Thom Rouse “Fine Art & Fashion, Monday, May 4, 2:00pm - 5:00pm
Just like fashion designers, photographers have to get their best and most creative pieces out on the runway, even if what they sell is a more modest version of readyto-wear. Blending concepts from both fashion and fine art will inspire creativity, innovation and success in your photography. The time you spend expanding your skills and talents through creating personal fine art will ultimately pay off in your business success.
Joel Grimes “Behind the Shutter”, Tuesday, 9:00am - 2:00pm
It all comes down to the fact I have a passion to create. It is all consuming. Having access to tools like a camera and programs like Photoshop give me options that if I lived ten lifetimes I would never run out of ideas to create. I like making people look larger than life. I want to pull out something out of my subjects that not only reveal something about themselves, but also something about me the artist. I also pay a lot of attention to how light strikes a face. One of the biggest challenges for me is to set enough time aside to do self assignments. This is how I grow and stay current. I try and do fifty self assignments a year, so that is basically one a week. With the pre-planning, the actual shooting and the retouching, this is a huge commitment. I have had the ability to brand myself to the point where my images are identifiable to me the artist. It takes a lot of time and energy to stick with a look or subject matter that I can repeat over and over to the point of building a body of work. It takes about two to three years to build enough images to create a successful brand. With each day, I have new opportunities to explore my craft. Most people I meet are not willing to put in the time it take to be successful in this industry and coupled with the inability to brand themselves and stick with one look long enough to see that brand weave it’s way into the market place. It takes a lot of nerve to stick with one look. Somehow we feel that if we do everything or chase after the someone else’s vision or look that we are safe. Playing it safe will not get you to the top. Just being alive is enough inspiration to keep me going. Just take a walk and look around and you will be inspired. At least I am. I used to play the guitar and write a lot music and lyrics. It is a process of creating and is no different than what I am doing now, but just a different set of tools. When I was around 22 years old I had to make a choice between music and photography and as we all know, photography won out.
