Dear SEPPA Community, I am sincerely humbled and honored to be your new SEPPA President. We all owe a deep debt of gratitude to Doug Peninger for his leadership during the last two years. Early in his tenure on the SEPPA Executive Board Doug stepped in and assumed the role of Southern Exposure editor, transforming it into an award winning online magazine. Most recently, his superb leadership helped us to successfully traverse a potentially devastating situation and deliver the association to a stable point as the Executive Board transitioned into new roles and responsibilities. Doug takes on the role of Board Chair, I will start a two year term as President, Kevin Jiminez is 1st Vice President, and we welcome Janet Boschker to the Executive Board as Secretary/Treasurer. We will soon appoint someone to the vacant position of 2nd Vice President, and Jessica Vogel will continue as Photographic Exhibit Chair. Although this was done previously, please permit me to also welcome Victoria Kelly as the new editor of Southern Exposure. She is committed to continuing the tradition of excellence for the magazine vand has already published three exceptional issues of Southern Exposure. We are so excited about the future of SEPPA. A highly energized Kevin Jiminez has already begun laying the foundation for the 2015 SEPPA Convention. We strive to serve our Affiliates and are looking for ways to strengthen our Affiliate relationships.

SEPPA State of Mind

This month we’ve got Georgia on our mind--we’re still down south and in the mood for peaches...so put some Ray Charles on your playlist and let’s head to the home of PPA in Atlanta, the Georgia state capital. Georgia is also home to the 39th president of our country, James Earl Carter, Jr. who hails from Plains, Georgia, and you should know that it’s the 10th most populous state in the US. The state was named to honor King George II of England. Georgia, known to many as the “peach state”, was the 4th state admitted into the USA in 1788.

In Gainesville, Georgia, the chicken capital of the world, it’s illegal to eat chicken with a fork. And did you know that vidalia onions, dubbed the sweetest in the world, can only be grown in the fields around Vidalia and Glennville? Georgia is also the nations top producer of the 3 Ps: peanuts, pecans and peaches. Coca-Cola was invented in May 1886 by Dr. John S. Pemberton in Atlanta. The name was suggested by Dr. Pemberton’s bookkeeper, Frank Robinson, who penned the name in the flowing script that we all recognize today. The popular theme part, Six Flags over Georgia, was actually named for the six flags that have flown over

“Georgia is also home to the world famous Louis Tonsmeire, former PPA President, who operates his studio in Cartersville.”

Georgia: England, Spain, Liberty, Georgia, Confederate States of America and the USA. And, last but certainly not least, Athens is the location of the first university chartered and supported by state funds. We checked in with Kamilah Lewis from PPA and got the following photographic statistics for Georgia: the state is home to 25 Masters, 36 Craftsmen, 3 MEIs and 38 CPPs.

And, of course, no list of notable Georgia photographers would be complete without Louis Tonsmeire, former president of PPA who operates his studio in Cartersville. Other Georgia photographers you’re probably familiar with are Lori Grice and Jeff Gulle, just to name a couple. So...fire up your iPod, it’s time once again to head for home. We’ll see you in August on another road trip!

Georgia is also home to Georgia School, one of the 4 PPA affiliate schools located in the SEPPA district that thrives under the expert direction of Kevin Jiminez. If you’re thinking that name sounds familiar--you’re correct. Kevin is the consummate multi-tasker serving as 1st Vice President on the SEPPA board and Executive Director for the Georgia state PPA association that’s currently headed by Spencer Smith.

“ The Dury’s staff consists of actual photographers... ” Ever since I bought my first item from Dury’s almost 4 years ago, I have trusted no one else with all of my equipment needs. The Dury’s staff consists of actual photographers with a vast array of technical as well as performance knowledge and they are quick to help me find the right solutions for all of my shooting needs. A few months ago, it was time for me to upgrade cameras and the staff at Dury’s showed me the new Canon 5D Mark III. Simply put, the new Canon 5D Mark III is the best camera that I have shot with to date. I now have the capability to shoot at extremely high ISO’s with little or no noise as well as up to 6 frames per second with a very quiet shutter. Not to mention, the new autofocus system works flawlessly even in the most trying situations! This camera will make even the most discerning photographer very happy as the files that come out of the camera are simply breathtaking.
