Doug Peninger: SEPPA President ncdoug01@triadbiz.rr.com
First Day 2013 With great joy, Southern Exposure magazine is proud to present the First Day images created on January 1 of this year. There is a little something for everyone. When the image on the cover came in, I knew it had to be the cover. It just took my breath away. The story is that the trees that were ruined in Hurricane Katrina have now become works of art. All I can say is wow. Some of the images are titled, some are not. You will see the makers’ name and title, if provided. As you look through the February issue, you will also see all of the seminars being offered on Monday at the SEPPA convention. To review all of the courses being offered, please refer to the October 2012 issue. There are no articles from our talented team of writers. Instead, I hope you will use this month to learn simply by viewing the images. What about it them may inspire you? What about them may influence your style of photography? On a completely different note, be sure to register for the SEPPA convention which is quickly coming. All of the registration is online at www.4seppa.com. Also, be sure to make your hotel reservation at the Hotel Indigo. Our convention chair, George Singleton has so much in store for all of us from education to trade show and socials. See you in Athens,
Doug Peninger SEPPA President Editor

The SEPPA Board of Governors, at the 2010 meeting in Franklin, TN, approved the all new SEPPA Degree Program. The Southeastern Photographic Fellowship is now a reality! You can earn your new SPF Degree in two categories. The orange ribbon is earned with a concentration in print credits, the purple ribbon with a concentration in service to the organzation. The requirements for both options are completed with education and/or service credits. You may also achieve both Degrees, signafied by a purple and orange ribbon. SEPPA will post the Credit Chart and submission forms at a later date. Be sure to check back. All events, beginning April 1, 2010 will be eligible to submit for credit.

The Subtle Art of Persuasion This fresh and exciting program is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Through an understanding of human behavior, we will transform “selling” into an art form. Simple concepts and easy-to-use techniques allow you to optimize your sales and client satisfaction through “relationship selling”. By unleashing your power of communication, you will dramatically increase your effectiveness in business and life. This abbreviated program will focus on • • •
Identify and sell to each lifestyle demographic -- (make money easily – Targeted Selling) Identify and relate to each of the three human modalities -- (speak their language – Sensory Selling) Understand and apply the three forms of human influence -- (communicate more easily and effectively)
Ponder this – “What you don’t even know that you don’t know, can cost you a fortune.”

Weddings It’s Time for a Reality Check! According to the U.S Census, in 2009 the United States had the lowest number of weddings since 1968. A 40 year low in weddings along with a surge in the number of photographers willing to photograph them meant the game was changing and the rules we used to play by were now out the window. Now the brides are returning to the market in 2011 and they are spending on average $5K more per wedding than they did in 2008. So with brides coming back and spending more money, now is the time for photographers to get a reality check and learn everything they need to know on how to get those big budget weddings to book with you. Brides are more savvy now and know the difference between the photographer that is using Photoshop to fix photos and the ones that use it to enhance them, they are more willing to pay for quality . Brides have the world at their finger tips as a resource to find the perfect photographer for them, the World Wide Web has grown. They also now expect more for their money when they book a photographer for their wedding day. What that means for photographers is, WE HAVE TO BE BETTER! We have to take better photos, be aware of all of the places brides are looking, know about the latest trends in our industry, and we have to be able to quickly adapt. It is no longer ok to sit back and wait for the phone to ring, now you have to be aggressive and and market yourself unlike ever before. Come sit in with Pete Wright as he speaks about the changing wedding photo industry. He will reveal the things you need to do to improve as a photographer, the things that brides now expect, the best places to be found by brides, and the things you need to do to make sure that you stand out in a very crowded market. It’s time to upgrade your business and do a complete reboot so that you are doing all of the things that the modern bride expects to see from their wedding photographer!
